The grand finale of this year’s NFF-TINGO Federation Cup men and women competitions will take place at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba on Wednesday, and the Delta State capital is already on tenterhooks for the two big encounters.
The last time they were here for the Federation Cup finale, Rivers Angels emerged victorious. That was in 2018. The girls from Port Harcourt are riding on confidence from that history and are walking a few inches taller on the Asaba roads.
Their opponents are Bayelsa Queens, who also have history and confidence of their own. The last time there was a Federation Cup grand finale, Bayelsa Queens defeated FC Robo Queens of Lagos at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City to emerge champions.
In fact, that day belonged to Bayelsa State. Bayelsa United triumphed in the men’s final against Nasarawa United, winning 4-3 on penalties after the game was locked at 2-2 at the end of regulation time. That was in 2021.
Today, the best women teams in Nigeria will slug it out to decide the best of the best in an ambience guaranteed to be enthralling and captivating. Bayelsa Queens and Rivers Angels are the teams that have represented Nigeria in the relatively-new CAF Women’s Champions League competition, as a measure of their strength. The women’s final match will commence at 2pm.
In the men’s final, multi-titlists Rangers International of Enugu will take on Bendel Insurance of Benin from 5pm.
Bendel Insurance and Rangers International clashed in the final of the competition in 1978 and 1981, with a win for each team.
Insurance will rather remember the 1978 final, which stunned fans who trooped to the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos that afternoon. Insurance’s only win in the competition previously was in 1972, when they needed a replay to defeat Sam Garba Okoye-inspired Mighty Jets to claim the title.
Rangers were the ‘happening team’ of the mid-70s in Nigeria, winning the oldest and most glamorous football championship consecutively in 1974, 1975 and 1976. In 1977, Rangers International won the Africa Cup Winners Cup. So, it was a team riding on high waves.
Though they could not defend their title in 1977, losing to IICC Shooting Stars, the ‘Flying Antelopes’ were back in the final in 1978.
Clear favourites to reclaim the trophy, the Coal City giants were poleaxed 3-0, with Peter Egharevba scoring the first goal from a long-range free-kick.
They got their revenge in 1981, also at the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos. Okuchukwu Obiora and Ifeanyi Onyedika, a member of the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations-winning Green Eagles, scored to hand the ‘Benin Arsenal’ a 2-0 defeat and return the trophy back to Enugu.
Today in Asaba, Insurance will have the services of midfielder Divine Nwachukwu – one of only two outfield players from the NPFL who were part of the Super Eagles’ qualification for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations with a 3-2 of Sierra Leone in Liberia on Sunday.
Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, who is celebrating his diamond jubilee anniversary (60th birthday), is expected at the arena alongside a number of commissioners and heads of parastatals and agencies, to add pomp to the finale of the biggest and oldest football championship in the land.
President of Nigeria Football Federation, Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau, NFF Board Members, the Executive Chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission, Chief Tonobok Okowa, NFF General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi and chieftains of TINGO will lead other dignitaries.

AC Milan renew interest in Chukwueze
AC Milan has affirmed their renewed interest in signing Samuel Chukwueze and the words of the Villarreal president’s son have boosted their pursuit, a report claims.
La Gazzetta dello Sport yesterday recalled the comments from Fernando Roig Negueroles – the son of the President of Villarreal and member of the board of directors – who spoke to AS about the winger.
“Samuel Chukwueze is an amazing guy who has been with us for many years. It is true that he hopes to play for a big club in Europe or the Premier League, and if that option were to arise, we would sit down and negotiate,” he said.
“But it will be necessary to see if there will be any advantageous offers for the three parties. No offers have arrived yet and Samuel still has one year left on his contract. What we are clear about is that if a good proposal does not arrive, he will continue with us.”
Villarreal are willing to sell Chukwueze whose contract expires in June 2024 but they expect fair value for his talent, which is around €25m. It is a high figure for a player who could be available for nothing next summer, but an auction could get underway given Real Madrid are also interested.
At the moment Chukwueze is preferred to Christian Pulisic by Milan.
The Nigeria international is coming off a season in which he scored 13 goals and provided 11 assists across all competitions, and the management hope he could form a rapid attacking trident with Rafael Leao and Marcus Thuram.
Milan had meetings with his entourage last week and other meetings will follow.
The big threat for the Rossoneri could come from the Premier League, where practically any club can fork out €25m for a player. -

Transfers: Napoli president now ready to sell Osimhen
Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has insisted that he is open to selling Victor Osimhen this summer.
The forward has just played a key role in guiding Napoli to their first Serie A title for more than three decades, contributing 26 goals and four assists from his 32 appearances.
With the Naples-based outfit keen to build on that success during 2023-24, they naturally want to retain the services of the Nigeria international for as long as possible.
However, at a time when Osimhen has just over two years remaining on his contract, there are an increasingly amount of admirers who are keen on signing the 24-year-old.
On Monday, Napoli officially unveiled Rudi Garcia as their new boss, a result of Luciano Spalletti opting to take a sabbatical, and that topic of Osimhen’s future came up during the media briefing.
Speaking to reporters, De Laurentiis said: “We already talked to Osimhen before the Scudetto celebration, so we already have a basic agreement on a two-year extension of his contract
“I have said for a while that Osimhen has to stay. Then, if an offer came in that I could not refuse for the good of Napoli, then we would consider it, as is only natural.”
Osimhen, who has spent three years at Napoli, has already recently acknowledged that his ‘dream’ is to eventually play in the Premier League.
Manchester United and Bayern Munich are allegedly both contemplating an approach for Osimhen, Chelsea potentially less so now that they are bidding to sign Villarreal’s Nicolas Jackson.
Although Real Madrid may still be toying with an approach for the player, Los Blancos have just signed Joselu and continue to be linked with Paris Saint-Germain’s Kylian Mbappe.
If PSG are able to generate their desired fee for Mbappe, the Ligue 1 champions would also be in the market for a new frontman with Osimhen an obvious possibility.
Napoli will look to recoup at least £100m for their most prized asset, a consequence of the striker costing in the region of €80m back in 2020.
With Man United looking increasingly likely to miss out on Tottenham Hotspur forward Harry Kane, the Red Devils may consider meeting such a valuation with Wout Weghorst returning to Burnley and Anthony Martial expected to be on the way out of Old Trafford -
