  • ‘90% of market crisis caused by govt functionaries’

‘90% of market crisis caused by govt functionaries’

The Onitsha Bridgehead Market Caretaker Committee, Anambra State, has alleged that 90 per cent of the crisis in the market was caused by government functionaries for their selfish interests.

A member of the committee, Chief Bonaventure Ucheagwu, yesterday insisted that until power was wrestled from certain individuals in government and transferred to the transition committee chairmen in the 21 local government areas, the government would continue to lose money.

Ucheagwu, who addressed reporters in Onitsha, said council chairmen were familiar with all markets, number of shops and money expected from each of the markets.

He said: “Those in Awka are only interested in what they will benefit from markets, and that is the major market problem. They don’t know anything about market affairs. The local government chairmen are close to the grassroots and know every market and number of shops in them, and amount to generate from each.

“If the chairmen are responsible for appointing those who will work in the markets, the state’s revenue base will increase because they know everything about the markets. Many shops were approved by these functionaries without knowing even their location and quality of materials used because they are based in Awka, but the man at the local government is with the traders and can easily detect inferior materials and unapproved shops.”

Ucheagwu, who claimed to have been in the market for over 30 years, regretted that “government money goes to private purse because those appointed to oversee market affairs are not only selfish, but do not know anything about market affairs.”

    • Oluomo re-elected Speaker
    • Abiodun pledges open-door policy

AbdulRasheed Kashamu, 26-year-old son of the late Senator Buruji Kashamu, and 25 other lawmakers have been inaugurated into the 10th Ogun State House of Assembly.

The young Kashamu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) represents Ijebu North I. He took his oath of office with the others yesterday.

Former Speaker Kunle Oluomo, of the All Progressives Congress (APC), was also re-elected Speaker unopposed. Oluomo, who represents Ifo I, was nominated by Lamidi Olatunji (Ado/Odo-Ota II), and seconded by Owodeh Waliu (PDP – Ijebu East).

His re-election ends the tension that had risen over the seat as vested interests emerged.

While some maintained that Oluomo, who was backed by Governor Dapo Abiodun, must return in the interest of continuity, some others rooted for a former deputy Speaker, Oludaisi Elemide (APC Odeda.

The 26-member House comprises 17 APC lawmakers and nine PDP lawmakers.

Lateefat Ajayi (Yewa South) emerged Deputy Speaker, following her nomination by Mrs. Oluwayemisi Bakare (APC – Ijebu Ode) and seconded by Olusegun Kaka (APC – Ijebu North II).

Oluomo, in his acceptance speech, pledged to discharge his duty without fear or favour to the benefit of Ogun people.

He promised that the 10th Assembly would work for the peace and progress of the state, and hailed Governor Dapo Abiodun’s efforts in ensuring the success of the inauguration.

Governor Dapo Abiodun yesterday met with the newly inaugurated lawmakers, with a promise to operate an open-door policy to all regardless of party affiliations, religion or tribe.

He reminded them that politics is over, ‘hence the need for all elective officials to join hands to serve the people’.

The governor appreciated the lawmakers for being orderly during their proclamation and inauguration, saying it showed the state is peopled by those who know how to resolve their differences amicably.

“This is how we like to be defined as a state -a state that upholds the tenets of democracy, a state that knows how to resolve its problems, a state that resolves its differences peacefully.

“By your acts today, you have enshrined your names in the history book and your footprints in the sand of time. Ogun State is not crisis riddled and that is how we like to be defined,” Abiodun said.

The governor hoped that the 10th Assembly would build on the foundation of the Ninth Assembly by legislating on issues that affect the people positively.

“I promise I will be the governor of all. Elections have been keenly contested and some of us have emerged winners; others were not so lucky but the state remains. We are all here to remain the winner. There is no winner and there is no vanquished. We are all here to represent the people of. So politics is now behind us, campaigns are now behind us.

“I am pledging that I will be the governor of all. I will maintain an open door policy to everyone regardless of party affiliations, religion and tribe. I promise to continue to be fair, just and equitable. I promise to support you in the discharge of your legislative duties, which are to pass laws and provide oversights for different sectors of the State,” he added.
