Navy, Army bigwigs masterminding oil theft in Niger Delta – Dokubo

    • We are not involved in economic sabotage says Nigerian Army

Forces within the Niger Delta region have vowed to work with President Bola Tinubu to reduce attacks on the oil-rich region to zero level.

This assurance was given on Friday by the leader of the Niger Delta Volunteer Force (NDVF), Alhaji Asari Dokubo, who met with President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Dokubo, who was a staunch supporter of the President all through the presidential campaigns and post-election period, said he visited to discuss issues bordering on security and the fight against oil theft in the Niger Delta.

Dokubo refuted claims that people from the oil-rich region were those involved in oil theft and pipeline vandalism and accused the armed forces personnel, especially those in the Navy and the Army as the kingpins behind the massive crime going on in the region.

Dokubo argued that the ordinary Niger Delta citizenry who are often blamed for these criminal activities are not responsible as they do not have the wherewithal to steal, saying there are ‘notorious’ Army and Naval oil kingpins that have engaged in an unprecedented crude oil theft in the last eight years.

According to him, the way the oil thieves have gone about their criminal activities has stripped the people of the Niger Delta of their livelihood, noting that it is a crime against humanity.

“The president is a fatherly figure to me. Our relationship spans over 30 years. I came here today to give words of encouragement to the President for the actions and policies so far made in this less than three weeks of governing a very difficult country like Nigeria.

“We discussed on a wide range of issues, especially on security and oil thieves in the Niger Delta. Myself and my brothers have assured the President that there would be zero oil theft and vandalization in the Niger Delta. We’re going to work with an NNPC, PCN and the IOCs to make sure that oil theft is brought to zero.

“The President has promised to take decisive action to make sure that this does not continue. It is very shameful. So I volunteered to help,” he said.

In a swift reaction to Dokubo’s allegation, the Nigerian Army has said it has zero tolerance for any compromise on the part of its troops and will not condone such acts of economic sabotage.

It also said that no black sheep within its rank and file would be spared if identified in engaging in such act.

Army’s spokesperson, Brig.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, said this while reacting to Dokubo.

General Nwachukwu said through a WhatsApp message to The Nation that “the Nigerian has been vigorously engaged in the fight against illegal oil bunkering, oil theft, illegal oil refining and other sundry crimes in the Niger Delta and this has yielded positive results as evident in the increase in daily oil production per barrel from an abysmally dwindling output in the past.”

The Nigerian Navy, however, described as spurious the allegations by Dokubo that some cabals in the military are involved in oil theft in the region.

Director of Naval Information, Commodore Adedotun Ayo-Vaughan, challenged Dokubo to name those involved in such an act, claiming that the Niger Delta leader is only trying to court the favour of President Tinubu with such allegations.

“If Asari Dokubo is seeking some form of relevance and alleges that there is a cabal of military people that are involved in crude oil theft, let him bring the names. Nobody is afraid of getting the names of those involved in crude oil theft,” the naval spokesman told Channels Television on the phone.

According to him, the Nigerian Navy has through its Operation Dakata da Barawo recorded tremendous successes in the fight against oil theft in the Niger Delta region.

He cited the recent arrest of a ship, Heroic Edun, that entered Nigeria illegally and the court fines imposed on the owners of the ship as evidence of the Nigerian Navy’s desire to combat crude oil theft.

“The Nigerian Navy is actively involved in the fight against crude oil theft and the resources in the Niger Delta. So, for anybody to say that there is a cabal of military officers, the only simple thing is to bring the evidence, bring the names. I rest my case,” Ayo-Vaughan maintained.

  • Raphinha to commit future to Barcelona

Raphinha to commit future to Barcelona

Raphinha has committed his long-term future to Barcelona, ending speculation that the Brazilian winger will leave the club this summer.

The 26-year-old joined Barcelona from Leeds United last year for £50m, and played 50 games for the Catalan giants in his first 12 months as a Barca player.

It was previously reported that Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel was keen to sign Raphinha, declaring the winger to be a ‘dream player’. It would also have been a potential financial benefit to the LaLiga winners, as they seek to balance the books.

But in an interview with Mundo Deportivo, the Brazilian said he would be at Barcelona next season – and beyond.

Raphinha said: “I will continue at Barca next season and the one that comes, and the one that comes, I have many years of contract and I hope to fulfill those years and many more.”

The winger has served one year of his five-year contract, and is tied to Barca until 2027. He is earning around £10.7m per year, which could be used elsewhere if the club were able to get rid of him.

Liverpool confirm release of Olufunwa, six others

Liverpool confirmed their retained list and departures yesterday, releasing 11 players and making a big call on the future of Adrian. Alongside Roberto Firmino, Naby Keita, James Milner, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, whose releases were already announced, seven academy players are being let go.

Midfielder Jack Bearne (aged 21), goalkeeper Liam Hughes (21), defender Charlie Hayes-Green (18), goalkeeper Oscar Kelly (20), forward Fidel O’Rourke (21), defender Oludare Olufunwa (21), and forward Iwan Roberts (18) have been let go.

Experienced goalkeeper Adrian, described by the club as a ‘vital member of the goalkeeping group’, has been offered a new contract.

The Seville-born custodian has only made two appearances in the last two seasons.

The contract extension could be seen as a safe bet in the event Caoimhin Kelleher departs the club for more minutes elsewhere. Jurgen Klopp is keen to keep hold of his No 2 and the club would demand around £20million from anybody aiming to sign him.

Losing Firmino, Keita, Milner, and Oxlade-Chamberlain will tug the heartstrings of many a Liverpool fan.

Between them, the four have played 969 games for the Reds and have helped elevate the status of the club with seven trophies in recent campaigns.

While injury issues have been a problem, particularly for Keita and Oxlade-Chamberlain, the quartet will need replacing and Liverpool have already brought in Alexis Mac Allister to freshen up the midfield.

  • Mbappe reaffirms commitment to PSG

    Mbappe reaffirms commitment to PSG

Paris Saint-Germain attacker Kylian Mbappe has affirmed that his “only option” is to stay with the French champions despite his refusal to extend his contract.

The 24-year-old memorably snubbed a move to Real Madrid last year in order to commit his future to Les Parisiens, signing a two-year renewal with an option to extend until 2025.

Mbappe’s 12-month option has not been triggered, though, and the France international recently sent a letter to PSG confirming that he has no plans to take up the extra year in his deal.

PSG are believed to have been left furious with Mbappe’s decision, and they will therefore try to sell him this summer before he leaves on a free transfer in the summer of 2024.

However, the attacker recently announced his desire to stay at PSG for the final year of his contract, and he was unsurprisingly quizzed on the matter during a press conference ahead of France’s Euro 2024 qualifier with Gibraltar on Friday.

Addressing reporters alongside Bleus head coach Didier Deschamps, Mbappe refused to explain the reasons for his decision not to renew with PSG but once again insisted that he plans to continue with the capital giants for the upcoming campaign.

“Am I going to leave PSG? I’ve already answered, I said my objective was to stay at PSG, it’s my only option at the moment, I’m ready to come back when it resumes,” Mbappe explained, as quoted by RMC Sport.

“The letter was not sent during the rally, it was sent before. There is not much that shocks me anymore. I didn’t think a letter killed anyone or offended anyone, you can’t control reactions but I don’t care.

  • Pochettino eyes two Onana for Chelsea

Pochettino eyes two Onana for Chelsea

Amadou Onana is on Chelsea’s radar for potential midfield options under Mauricio Pochettino, following a strong debut season at Everton. The Belgian international, 21, joined the Toffees last summer from Lille, making 35 appearances for the side in his first season after a £34m move.

But Everton are under significant financial pressure which may force them into selling him on after just one season on Merseyside.

Now The Guardian believe that Chelsea are targeting Onana, and view the midfielder as a natural long-term replacement for N’Golo Kante.

Kante is leaving Chelsea after seven years of service to the Blues, with a move to Saudi Arabian side Al-Ittihad thought to be imminent.

Chelsea will be keen to fill the 32-year-old’s place with Pochettino stepping into the managerial hotseat from the beginning of July.

It is not the first Onana that Chelsea have been connected with in the transfer window, with the Blues also scouting the possibility of signing goalkeeper Andre Onana from Inter Milan.

The 27-year-old Cameroonian goalkeeper, who served a nine-month drug ban in 2021, has become one of Europe’s most desired shot-stoppers following his Champions League performances this season, as Inter reached the final.

The Blues are seeking to improve on their 12th-place finish in this Premier League season, as they were helmed by three managers and another interim gaffer.

Pochettino is set to take charge from the start of next month, and will have to overhaul the playing personnel significantly.

Everton are in special measures with the Premier League after losses exceeding £370m over three years.

  • Manchester United, De Gea open new contract talks

Manchester United, De Gea open new contract talks

David De Gea has been left off Manchester United’s official retained list with talks over a new contract still ongoing. United have sent their to the Premier League and De Gea was the notable absentee.

“In terms of the goalkeeping department, discussions remain open with David De Gea over a potential new contract, while Tom Heaton and Nathan Bishop have had extensions triggered on their deals,” United wrote in their announcement.

De Gea has agreed a new contract with the Red Devils but it is still to be signed off by the club’s hierarchy.

The proposed new deal would reduce his current £375,000-a-week salary and it remains to be seen if united will still look to bring in a new No 1 if he does stay.

The 32-year-old Spanish goalkeeper has been at United since 2011, but he will be a free agent on June 30.

He is coming off the back of a season where he won the Golden Glove for the most Premier League clean sheets but his campaign was marred by more costly individual errors.

Speaking last month manager Erik ten Hag said: “I think we want him to stay and he wants to stay, so I think we will find each other. “I never give a comment about how negotiations are going.”

  • Barca table improved deal for Gundogan

Barca table improved deal for Gundogan

Barcelona are yet to make any significant move in the market as we approach the summer transfer window.

After missing out on Lionel Messi, the club are focusing on the pursuit of Ilkay Gundogan. After leading the English champions to a historic treble this season, the Manchester City star has become a wanted prospect in the market.

According to The Athletic, Barcelona have stepped up their pursuit of Gundogan, knowing he might be one of the few top-quality players the club could realistically sign this summer, especially after missing out on Messi.

As per the report, Barça have improved their three-year offer for Gundogan. The La Liga champions had offered the German a three-year deal worth around €27 million and are now understood to have improved their proposal.

It must be noted that the Catalans are facing stiff competition from Manchester City in the race to sign the German international.

  • Beckham’s son won’t play with Messi at Inter

Beckham’s son won’t play with Messi at Inter

David Beckham has reportedly sanctioned Romeo Beckham’s permanent transfer away from Inter Miami, meaning he won’t play with Lionel Messi.

The 20-year-old moved away from the Major League Soccer side in an attempt to get some game time under his belt.

He joined Premier League club Brentford in January from Inter Miami, who are owned by the former Manchester United legend. The budding starlet scored his first goal for the club in February, bagging a dramatic 93rd minute winner.

He seems to have impressed staff at Brentford, who have agreed to sign him on a one-year deal.

The Bees will pay a nominal fee to seal his services from Inter Miami. His father has allowed him to leave the Miami-based club, meaning Romeo won’t have the chance to play with Messi.

The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner has decided to join the MLS team after opting to leave Paris Saint-Germain.

Romeo, meanwhile, garnered high praise from Brentford B boss Neil MacFarlane, who hailed the player’s technical ability.

“We’ve been absolutely delighted with Romeo since he arrived with us,” he told the club’s website. “He came to us from Inter Miami with the aim of working with us during their close season. Romeo has applied himself unbelievably well, he’s really bought into the culture and the group which he has become a big part of.”
