Chibok schoolgirls: Parents beg Tinubu to facilitate release of 92 pupils in captivity

Concerned parents of Chibok schoolgirls have appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to help facilitate the release of 92 abducted girls still in Boko Haram’s captivity.

The parents made the appeal in a letter they jointly issued yesterday through Yana Galang (mother to Rifkatu Galang still in captivity) and Zanna Lawan (father to Aisha Lawan still in captivity).

They also congratulated President Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima on their assumption of office on May 29.

The concerned parents begged the President to help in releasing the remaining schoolgirls still in captivity.

“Mr. President, as you are well aware, our predicament started in 2014 when 276 of our daughters from Chibok Government Secondary School were abducted.

“It has been years of pain and agony for us and we are disheartened that nine years later and a few months before the end of the immediate past administration, 92 of these girls remain in Boko Haram captivity, subjected to unimaginable ordeal and abuse at the hands of their captors,” the parents said.

In the letter, the parents acknowledged that President Tinubu in his inaugural speech, despite not making a direct pledge particularly regarding their plight in Chibok, pledged to make security a top priority.

They urged the President to beam a searchlight to the recovery of the remaining 92 of the kidnapped girls.

According to the parents, former President Muhammadu Buhari, in his inaugural speech on May 29, 2015, said his administration could not claim to have defeated Boko Haram without rescuing Chibok girls.

They added that on April 14, 2021, a statement, titled: Chibok Girls Still On Our Minds, was released to further remind them of the former President’s promise and reassured them that all their girls would be rescued and reintegrated into their communities.

“With the baton changing under the same political party now in 2023, history will no doubt be kind to you, your family, your government and your party if these statements from your predecessor are achieved under you, more so, with our son, Vice President Shettima.

“Mr. President, we ask you to be the light that will illuminate our darkness, end our writhing pains, dry our tears and free us from the shackles of sadness, sorrow, and anguish this trajectory has brought into our existence.

“When we marked the ninth year remembrance of the abduction this year, we didn’t think we would hold any more commemoration. The truth is that we don’t want to. But regrettably, so it seems. Except you come to our rescue and give us succour, another sober commemoration knocks.

“We wait patiently for this succour as our acceptable alternative,” the parents said.

    • Pro-democracy activist: it’s time to unite, heal country
    • Kokori to Nigerians: President won’t fail us

Former Leader of Niger Delta Peoples Volunteer Force, Asari Dokubo, yesterday recounted the contributions of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the struggle for the restoration of democracy in the country, following the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election.

Dokubo, with notable June 12 activists, like a former Secretary General of the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), Chief Frank Kokori; pro-democracy activist Awa Bamiji, among others, recalled how Tinubu joined other June 12 activists in the struggle to fight for the de-annulment of the mandate given to the late business mogul, Bashorun Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola.

Addressing a world media briefing to mark this year’s Democracy Day organised by a pro-democracy group, Coalition for A Better Nigeria, Dokubo said he was happy that the struggle for June 12 had been fulfilled with the victory of Tinubu as President in the February 25 general election.

He said it was a pity that those who did not know how the struggle for the restoration of democracy was fought were busy “claiming their mandates were stolen”.

The erstwhile militant leader criticised former President Olusegun Obasanjo for allegedly laying the foundation for Nigeria’s problems.

Dokubo said the ex-President was imposed by the military to “reap where he didn’t sow”.

He said: “Tinubu fought with us from the trenches during June 12 struggle. That is why I supported him. I will continue to support President Tinubu because of what he stands for, because of what he did during June 12 struggle. If Tinubu fails as president, hold me responsible.”

Kokori was hopeful that President Tinubu would not fail.

The former labour leader said June 12 activists believe that the President would turn round the nation’s fortunes for the benefit of the people.

He said: “We have so much belief that Asiwaju will turn round this country. The other fellows who have taken power for the past 24 years didn’t understand democracy.

“People like Abiola will be happy in his grave today that at least those who were in the trenches, who fought for his freedom and democracy; at last one of them has taken power. That is why we don’t joke with democracy.”

To Bamiji, it is time to unite the country and heal the wounds of June 12.

He said: “Today, we are happy that a big figure from the struggle of June 12, in the person of Tinubu, has become our President. It is an opportunity for us to start rebuilding the nation, to start reconciliation, where it is necessary.

“Let us forget the past and move forward. We have seen the best atonement in the person of President Bola Tinubu. Let us forget the past and start uniting the nation.”

Lagos sensitises residents on gas pipeline project

Lagos State has assured residents of Lagos Island, Iru/Victoria Island, Ibeju-Lekki, Eti-Osa Local Government Areas that their safety will not be compromised despite the proposed gas pipeline coming to their communities.

Permanent Secretary (Environmental Services), Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, Tajudeen Gaji, gave the assurance at an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) meeting on a proposed 71km natural gas distribution pipeline. The pipeline will run across four local government areas – Lagos Island, Eti-Osa, Iru/Victoria Island and Ibeju-Lekki. The EIA meeting held at Iru/Victoria Island Local Council Development Area.

Gaji, who was represented by Director (Environmental Assessment), Olasunkanmi Sojunu, said the EIA was to educate residents who are most likely to be affected by the project, on the modalities and functionalities.

According to him, safety measures have been put in place to ensure accidents do not happen.

He said: “The EIA is not intended to stop the project, but make it more sustainable. We are here to sensitise the people on the proposed gas line that will run through their communities. It is a private initiative by Gaslink, but this stakeholder engagement is necessary to reassure the people of their safety. We want them to raise questions and concerns so they can be addressed because their safety and security remains paramount to us.

“We also want the concerned people to go through the draft copy of the report and raise their observations, which can either be sent to the Federal Ministry of Environment, State Ministry of Environment or their local government secretariats, and they will be taken up by the regulators and project proponent during implementation.

“We however urge the people to support the project because it will enhance economic activities in the immedite communities, create jobs, and bring development to Lagos.”

Executive Secretary of Victoria Island/Ikoyi Residents Association, Abdulateef Muse, said concerned residents should be enlightened the more to ensure they grasp the full intent of the project.

He said: “I have raised the concerns of anybody who does not understand the nature of gas. It is important that the project sponsors educate the public as intensively as possible for mutual protection, and to avoid undue stress on the people so they can rest assured that this type of natural gas is not as flammable as others, and won’t give then any level of concern.

“We also want this stakeholder engagement to continue until the implementation stage so that everyone is aware and then we can avoid hearsays. It is better for the project initiators to keep at this until the concerned communities, who are more of the unlearned, fully understand the full gravity of the project.”

Don’t destroy Ganduje’s legacy, movement tells governor

A pro-All Progressives Congress group, Progressive Foundational Movement (PFM), has called on National leader of New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Musa Kwankwaso to call Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, to order.

The group asked the NNPP Presidential candidate to caution the governor from wiping out achievements of former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje-led administration

It condemned demolition of some buildings by the administration in Kano in less than a week, complaining if the trend is not stopped, it would erase legacies of the past administration, and economic development.

A statement by spokesman, Jamilu Sani, in Abuja, frowned at the brazen way the government is going about destruction of public property without due process.

Of interest was demolition of Daula Hotel which, according to Sani, was a Public Private Partnership (PPP) between the state and a private company, noting such action will send a wrong signal to investors.

The statement said at a time the state needs investors to boost its internally generated revenue, instead of wooing investors, the government is undermining the investment drive of the former government of Ganduje.

The statement reads: “We are taken aback by the reckless demolition exercise ongoing in Kano state, it’s worrisome to see how people are losing their business in the name of demolition. How will you put people, your subjects, into this kind of misery because you hate your processor Ganduje?

“Ganduje as the architect of modern Kano has done his best for the state. We are, however, calling on the elders of the state, particularly Governor Yusuf’s political leader and boss former governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso to call the Governor to order before it’s too late.

“We want to appeal to Governor Yusuf to focus on his mandate instead of embarking on the mission to destroy Ganduje’s huge footprint in Kano state.”

A private firm, Lamash Property Limited, had threatened to sue the Kano state government demanding N10bn compensation over the demolition of the Daula Hotel.

The Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN) yesterday came alive in wild celebration and testimonies, as members, led by Joshua’s widow and overseer of the church, Pastor Evelyn Joshua, gathered to celebrate the late founder’s 60th posthumous birthday.

Members from different countries – United States of America, South Africa, Zambia, Malawi, Ghana, Poland, Namibia, Lesotho, Mozambique and many more – gave goodwill messages and testimonies.

One of the high moments was when a Russian member said she was representing Russia, the Ukraine and Germany. This drew huge applause, as it underlined the love the late founder preached.

Guests were treated to classical and traditional gospel music and drama performances, alongside children choreography and cutting of the posthumous birthday cake.

Founder and Senior Pastor of Champion Royal Assembly, Prophet Joshua Iginla, said the late TB Joshua was a gift to mankind and humanity. He described him as ‘firstborn among the prophets who took the bullet for so many of us’.

Iginla noted that although he was tried and persecuted, the late Joshua remained focused and displayed maturity in the way he comported himself. ‘He was a man worthy of emulating’, Iginla added.

Founder of Temple of Light and Miracles Ministries, Pastor Isaiah Ogedegbe, eulogised the life of TB Joshua, saying ‘in charity, he had no classmate and I believe in the grace of God upon his life’.

On his part, Tee Mac Omatshola Iseli, a flutist, said TB Joshua ‘taught me to stay humble, give and believe in God and in the Lord Jesus. He was a wonder to many. TB Joshua still blesses us from heaven. He is part of our lives and we all miss him every day’.
