  • French Open: Alcaraz, Djokovic set for battle of generations

French Open: Alcaraz, Djokovic set for battle of generations

It’s the hotly-anticipated clash everyone wants to see as world No 1 Carlos Alcaraz meets Grand Slam record-chasing Novak Djokovic in the French Open semi-finals.

It is a fascinating battle of the generations, with 36-year-old Djokovic chasing a record-breaking 23rd Grand Slam title and Alcaraz, 16 years his junior, a second.

Djokovic and Alcaraz met for the first – and only – time in Madrid last year, when the young Spaniard served notice that he was the present as well as the future of tennis by beating Rafael Nadal and Djokovic back to back.

Since then they have frustratingly missed each other, with Djokovic unable to play in the US Open, where Alcaraz won his first Grand Slam title, because of his vaccination status, while the 20-year-old was kept out of the Australian Open by injury.

They both reached the semi-finals dropping only one set but Alcaraz has been the more impressive, spending three-and-a-half hours less on court than Djokovic in his five matches so far.

The Serbian looked in trouble for a while against Karen Khachanov before playing a flawless second-set tie-break.

Djokovic’s ability to lock in at the most important moments is one of his greatest strengths while his extraordinary precision in the placement of his shots is unmatched.

If Djokovic is the old master, Alcaraz is the young impressionist, using the clay canvas to show off his talent and exuberance.

The top seed has dismantled Italian talent Lorenzo Musetti and hopeful Stefanos Tsitsipas on his way to the last four, playing at a rarely-seen level against the Greek.

Alcaraz called the masterclass ‘one of the best’ matches of his career and he will need another against Djokovic, who will not let any lapse in concentration go unpunished.

Alcaraz is relishing the chance to take on Djokovic, according to his coach Juan Carlos Ferrero.

Ferrero knows what it takes to win on the Parisian clay having lifted the title in 2003 and he feels his man is ready to topple Djokovic.

“I think both players are maybe the best in the world right now,” said the Spaniard. “Novak has the experience to play these kinds of matches more than Carlos, of course, but, at the same time, Carlos really wants to play that match. He was really looking forward to that match from the beginning.

“Of course, he had to play match by match and we were very patient about it. But I think he is ready.

“He practised for these kinds of matches. He practises for these kinds of moments to be there and try to make history step by step.

“He wants to do it but of course we really know that Novak is going to give absolutely his best. I think he is going to fight until the last ball and he is going to prepare for the match as well as we can.

“So we expect a really tough and close match. Carlos believes a lot in himself and he believes that he can beat Novak.”

NPFL Super 6 Playoffs: Rivers United ready to halt Insurance’s unbeaten record

The NPFL Super 6 is in its penultimate round with another three matches lined up at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos today, writes TUNDE LIADI

The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Championship Playoffs will enter Matchday Four today with nothing much to separate between current league leaders, Enyimba (five points) and bottom side Lobi Stars (two points).

All the three Matchday 3 games ended in stalemates on Wednesday.

The NPFL Super 6 has been characterized by many draws with seven of the nine fixtures already decided ending in draws while only two have produced wins.

Enyimba, one of the two teams that have managed to win a game were held to a draw by ambitious Bendel Insurance. The latter held on to their unbeaten record which now stood at 21 games. They have drawn 11 of the last 12 league games they have played.

Remo Stars scored early in the second game of the day against Sunshine Stars but the Owena Whales pegged them back early in the second half while Lobi Stars got a draw against Rivers United in the night game.

Today, Rivers United will go in search of their second win when they tackle Bendel Insurance. The Pride of Rivers pinned Sunshine Stars by a lone goal but they got only draws against Remo Stars and Lobi Stars. Knowing that no team is certain of anything yet after three games anything other than the maximum points may hinder them from defending the title they won last season.

Rivers United are second on the table with five points while Insurance who have turned drawn specialists are fourth with three points. The Benin Arsenals are unbeaten in all competitions but it will be of no relevance if they end the season without continental ticket.

In the second game of the day, Lobi Stars will slug it out with Remo Stars. Both teams will go at daggers drawn knowing that only a win will brighten their continental chances. The Sky Blue Stars were favoured to beat Sunshine Stars on Wednesday but they were unable to protect their lead and had to settle for their third of the Super 6.

Lobi Stars have disappointed in their initial two games but they managed to repel Rivers United on Wednesday in a game they were expected to lose. The Pride of Benue have two points out of possible nine and anything other than a win against Remo Stars could end their continental ambition.

Enyimba are up against Sunshine Stars in the third game of the day. The People’s Elephant temporarily hold the top spot with five points but they will put themselves in a promising position with a win against the Owena Whales who are fifth with two points from three games.

Sunshine Stars were the dark horse before the start of the NPFL Championship Playoffs but they have proved bookmakers wrong with their modest performances. They were unlucky to lose to Rivers United in the first game and could have won against Remo Stars had their legitimate penalty appeal not been snubbed by the match officials on Wednesday.

Will the Owena Whales produce another surprising result against Enyimba?

N120b USSD debt: Big banks not paying, say telcos

Telecom operators have accused big deposit money banks (DMBs) of owing the huge percentage of the N120 billion debts that arose from the use of Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD). They also accused the big DMBs of intransigence in paying the debt.

Acting under the aegis of Association of Licensed Telecoms Companies of Nigeria (ALTON), the operators also said they were yet to feel the impact of the intervention of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Godwin Emefiele in resolving the impasse as it has not translated to the payment of the debt by the big banks.

UUSD is a Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) protocol that is used to send text messages. USSD is similar to Short Message Service (SMS); it uses codes made up of the characters that are available on a mobile phone.

Chairman of ALTON, Gbenga Adebayo, in a telephone interview, said the smaller operators have been responsive and alive to their corporate responsibilities by paying their debts to the operators, adding that the same story could not be told of the big banks that have refused to defray their debts.

According to him, the impact of the debt burden is huge because of the caliber of banks owing.

Adebayo said the CBN governor’s intervention has not resulted into the payment of the debt, meaning such an intervention remained useless at best, adding that the process of final disconnection has started.

He said: “We are now commencing the implementation of the terms of the agreement by sending them notice which will expire after the notice depending on the agreement and once the service notice expires, we will begin to withdraw the service. I must say that some banks are paying. Unfortunately the ones that are not paying are the big banks debtors. I don’t want to mention their names. They are the big ones and that is why it has such a huge impact on the industry. So the smaller ones that are not owing much are paying; some were paying before, we don’t know what happened and they stopped paying, allowing the debts to pile up.”

He said initially when the notice was served, the DMBs agreed but only to turn around to talk about the billing system. He asked rhetorically: “How can billing be the problem after the service has been provided?”

On the CBN’s intervention, he said: “We will begin to see the intervention when the DMBs start paying. We don’t know what intervention they are doing with the banking system but we will see the impact when we start seeing money being paid by the DMBs. So far, we have not seen anything. We are a highly responsible corporate organisation. We are not going to yank off the plug without following due process; all we are doing now is to enforce the terms of the commercial agreement and when the day comes when the notice will expire, we will rightly disconnect.”

  • Aiyenugba reveals secrets of goalkeeping longevity

Aiyenugba reveals secrets of goalkeeping longevity

Although Dele Aiyenugba is 39, the former Super Eagles goalkeeper is not ready to pull off his gloves just yet and retire from football. The double CAF Champions League winner with Enyimba believes he still has a lot to offer in the game by his return to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) after 13 seasons in Israel . Now attached with Kwara United, Aiyenugba reminisced on his experience playing abroad even as he relished the joy of still being active on the Nigerian domestic scene, OLALEKAN OKUSAN writes

His ambition in football was to be one of the greatest goal poachers the game had ever seen but providence made Dele Aiyenugba a goalkeeper.

Indeed destiny installed Aiyenugba between the sticks and today he is famed as one of Nigeria’s best goalies.

“I did not start with goalkeeping in the game; like many of my peers, I played street football as a teenager,” Aiyenugba recalled with boyish smiles. “In one of our matches against another street, our goalkeeper failed to show up and that was how I was called up to cover up for him.

“After the match, a lot of people hailed me for my performance; some even rewarded me with money for it and that experience made me realise how much I love to dive.

“In football, goalkeepers dive a lot to catch or parry shots. So, from there I decided to be a goalkeeper.”

If Aiyenugba had any doubt about the switch of position on the field of play, it was soon erased from his mind by the huge support he received from his football-loving father who kept the young lad on his toes and urged him to be the best shot stopper ever.

“When I decided to take to goalkeeping, my father really inspired me,” the former Nigeria International said.“ He really urged me on and told me to have fun playing football as a goalkeeper.

“This really motivated me a lot whenever I was in goal for my team in those days and helped me to keep a clean sheet in many matches.”

Before moving abroad, Aiyenugba started professional football with his boyhood club, Kwara United – then known as Kwara Stars – where he played between 1998 and 2000.

In 2021, Aiyenugba joined Enyimba International Football Club of Aba and played for the then league champion until 2007 before teaming up with Bnei Yehuda in Israel.

Aiyenugba spent over 10 years in the Israeli league where he recorded 294 appearances across four teams.

At Enyimba, Aiyenugba won several laurels including the prestigious CAF Champions League twice, which aided his invitation to the national team.

He recalled how his success with Enyimba lifted his career: “Winning the CAF Champions League really impacted positively on my career because it helped me to get a call-up to the national team where I featured for the Super Eagles.

“Enyimba put Nigeria on the continental and world football maps. I had several memorable moments playing for Enyimba. My most memorable moment was when I replaced Vincent Enyeama toward the end of the CAF Champions League semi-final and final matches, which went into penalty shootout.

“I really thank God for giving me the grace and the support of my teammates, most especially the legendary Vincent Enyeama, during my days in Enyimba,” Aiyenugba added.

After his long sojourn abroad, Aiyenugba decided to return to where it all started – the NPFL.

“I decided to return to the NPFL because of my family and most importantly my son, Daniel Aiyenugba, who is also a goalkeeper,” he explained.“ Also, I am back home to impart knowledge on younger goalkeepers.

“Our goalkeepers are improving. They can do more by believing in themselves and doing more personal training to keep improving.”

Yet Aiyenugba has lamented the low patronage of the league in recent times compared to the heady days when he was with Enyimba.

He said: “There is a big difference between now and when I was at Enyimba. In our days, fans used to besiege the Aba Stadium just to watch us train. On match day, by 2pm, the stadium was already filled, and players were ready to reward the fans’ support with good performance and victory.

“But nowadays, there are a lot of challenges, most especially on the part of the players. The players need to be paid very well to perform well. How do you expect a player that is not paid to play well on the field? So there is a need to improve the players’ welfare in the NPFL.

“Also, most teams are now turning their pitch to Astro turf which prevents free flowing football. We need good pitches, not Astro turf,” he said.

Aiyenugba attributed his longevity in the game to divine blessing: “My longevity is the grace of God. I take care of my body by sleeping well, by always thinking positively, by always willing to put a smile on the faces of people around me.”

Football has taught Aiyenugba a lot of life lessons which continue to help him: “I have gained a lot of lessons by playing football and by putting God first in whatever I do in life.

“Football has taught me humility, diligence and determination. I really thank God for the talent God gave me. Football has given me everything I desire in life and I want to really appreciate God for this.”

Retirement is far from Aiyenugba’s mind as he eyes the record of the longest playing goalkeeper in Nigeria and indeed at the global level.

“I don’t know when I will retire. I want to break the record for the longest playing goalkeeper as long as God still gives me the grace to continue playing,” he disclosed but ruled out a possible return to the national team, saying: “No I am not planning to return to the national team because we have a lot of young goalkeepers in local and foreign leagues, and they are all doing great.”

Nevertheless, Aiyenugba desired to see more local players called up to the Super Eagles and lamented their current shut-out from the national team.

“The decision by the national handlers not to consider the local players when selecting the team is not a good one. We have a lot of foreign-based players who started from the local league. We need to put our league on TV for these national team handlers to see the quality of the players in the domestic league,” he stressed.
