Oshoala set to clinch second European crown with Barca

Super Eagles forward Asisat Oshoala’s Barcelona will lock horns with Wolfsburg in the final of the 2022-23 UEFA Women’s Champions League final at Philips Stadion in Eindhoven tonight.

The Catalan club are hoping that the record five-time African Women’s Footballer of the Year can shake off a hamstring complaint to take her place in the forward line.

The Nigerian international, who is Barca’s lead goalscorer with 21 goals in 28 games, is eyeing a second European triumph with Blaugrana but Spanish champions must negotiate their way past the Germans, who are looking for a third Champions League trophy.

Barcelona have enjoyed another successful season, winning the league title for the fourth consecutive campaign and lifting their third Spanish Super Cup.

The Catalan giants will attempt to add another piece of silverware to their bursting trophy cabinet when they make their fourth Champions League final appearance in five years.

While they were successful in 2021, Barcelona lost out in the final to record winners Lyon in 2019 and 2022, with last year’s contest ending in a 3-1 defeat.

Jonatan Giraldez’s side suffered a disappointing result in their most recent outing, falling to a 2-1 defeat against Madrid CFF, bringing an end to their 64-game unbeaten league run.

They will be hoping to experience better fortunes when they face Wolfsburg tonight and they will be able to take confidence from the fact that they claimed a 5-3 aggregate victory over Die Wölfinnen in last season’s semi-finals.

After being crowned European champions in 2013 and 2014, Wolfsburg have fallen short in their last three final appearances, finishing runners-up to Lyon in 2016, 2018 and 2020.

The German side are unbeaten in 11 Champions League matches since suffering a heavy 5-1 defeat to Barcelona at Camp Nou in April 2022.

Although they lost last year’s semi-final tie, Wolfsburg boast an impressive head-to-head record against Barcelona, winning four of their five meetings in the Champions League and with eight European goals to her name, Ewa Pajor is the leading scorer in the Champions League this season, and she will be looking to add to her tally when she leads the line for the Germans tonight.

Smiling Leao signs new Milan contract

Rafael Leao is ‘very happy’ after signing a new contract with Milan, insisting it was ‘something I wanted to do,’ and is open to changing his jersey to a more iconic number.

The Portugal international put pen to paper on the preliminary documents three weeks ago, but had the official signing and announcement of a new contract to June 2028 yesterday.

“I am very happy. It’s something I wanted to do and now it is done,” Leao told reporters as he drove away from the club headquarters. “We hope to do great things together in future. We reached an agreement and I am very happy. Now our focus goes to the Verona game and then next season when we want to win many important things.”

There have been reports in La Gazzetta dello Sport today that Leao is ready to change his jersey to the iconic Number 10 from next season.

“We’ll see. The 17 is a special number for me, but then we’ll see.”

The Portugal international has been at the club since 2019, notching up 41 goals and 29 assists in 162 competitive appearances.

Although the official statement does not include the details, multiple sources are confident it is worth €5m per season with a series of performance-related bonuses of up to €2m.

  • Man United may offer Maguire to snare Mount from Chelsea

Man United may offer Maguire to snare Mount from Chelsea

Harry Maguire could form part of Manchester United’s package to land Chelsea’s Mason Mount.

United are hopeful of securing Mount but they are some distance away from agreeing a fee with Chelsea wanting around £70million.

But Old Trafford skipper Maguire, 30, who looks certain to leave the club, is valued at about £30m and could be offered by United.

Manager Erik ten Hag has claimed that Maguire, who joined United for £85million in 2019, “has a decision to make” in terms of his future.

However, the pair have yet to stage any talks.

With the FA Cup final against Manchester City tomorrow, they are due to meet next week, although ten Hag looks certain to open the door for the player’s exit.

New Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino tried to sign Maguire when he was at Hull but the offer from Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy was not good enough, so the defender signed for Leicester instead.

Equally, Chelsea do have a number of central defenders, and Kalidou Koulibaly and Trevoh Chalobah would have to be offloaded first.

United, meanwhile, are desperate to sign Mount and look set to beat Liverpool in the race for the England midfielder.

Maguire had already suffered a dip in form before the arrival of Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford last summer.

His struggles continued at the start of this season, and now he has found himself regularly warming the bench.

It has been previously reported that United are so keen to get him off the books that they have considered paying off the remainder of his contract.

It is claimed that he pockets around £190,000-a-week at Old Trafford.

And he could only expect to earn around half of that figure at any potential new club.

  • Happy Ronaldo wants more top players to join Saudi league

Happy Ronaldo wants more top players to join Saudi league

Christiano Ronaldo concedes he did not expect to finish the season empty-handed at Al Nassr but the Portuguese forward says he is happy in Saudi Arabia and hopes other big-name players will follow him to the league for the next campaign.

Ronaldo signed a two-and-half year contract estimated by media to be worth more than 200 million euros ($220.16 million) with Al Nassr, making his debut in January.

He scored 14 goals in 16 games but it was not enough to help his side win the Saudi Pro League (SPL) title, with Al Nassr finishing second behind Al Ittihad.

The 38-year-old, who missed the final Matchday due to injury, said the league was very competitive but that there were many opportunities to grow.

“We have very good teams, very good Arab players, but the infrastructure – they need to improve a little bit more. Even the referees, the VAR system, should be a little quicker,” he said in an SPL interview.

“But I’m happy here, I want to continue here, I will continue here.”

Ronaldo said he had adapted to life at the club, though there were many differences from his time at Europe where he played for elite teams such as Manchester United, Juventus and Real Madrid.

“In Europe we train more in the morning and here we train in the afternoon, or night. When you start Ramadan, we train at 10 o’clock in the night. It was so strange,” he added.

Since Ronaldo’s arrival, several other top players have been linked with a move to the Saudi league, with Lionel Messi receiving a formal offer to join Al-Hilal next season.

Ronaldo’s former team mate and Ballon d’Or winner Karim Benzema has reportedly received an offer worth more than 100 million euros from Al Ittihad.

  • Messi will decide his future next week, says Xavi

Messi will decide his future next week, says Xavi

Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez has revealed that Lionel Messi will decide where he plays next week, amid reports that he wants to settle his future sooner rather than later.

It was confirmed by Paris Saint-Germain that Messi would play his last game in the French capital on Sunday. With the Argentine out of contract in the summer, he has interest from Barcelona, Saudi Arabia and Inter Miami.

Speaking to MD, Xavi reiterated that Messi would be welcome back at Barcelona.

“No, I see it the same as I always have. I have already said many times, he has the doors open to him here, I am the coach and I know that he will help us if he decides to come, but in the end I think we have to leave him a little alone.”

“He is finishing the season there, he has a lot of respect for Paris Saint-Germain, he wants to finish in the best way, his contract ends and then he has earned all the right in the world to say where to go, where to end his career. I think that he has football to continue at a high level and that if he comes to Barca, which most or all of the Catalans want, especially the coach, the doors are open, I am convinced that it will go well.”

  • Nottingham Forest axe under-performing Lingard

    Nottingham Forest axe under-performing Lingard

Jesse Lingard has been released by Nottingham Forest after just one season at the City Ground.

The 30-year-old joined the Reds on a free transfer last summer, but failed to impress as he quickly fell down the pecking order under Steve Cooper.

Lingard failed to chip with a single goal or assist in his 17 Premier League outings – and now becomes a free agent once again.

His last appearance for the club came in the 2-0 defeat against former employers Manchester United on April 16, where he played just two minutes.

In total, Lingard played just three top-flights matches in 2023.

He scored his only two goals for the club in the Carabao Cup in the third and fourth round wins over Tottenham and Blackburn.

The club also announced they have released Andre Ayew, Cafu, Jack Colback, Jordan Smith and Lyle Taylor.

  • Allardyce, Leeds part ways after relegation

Allardyce, Leeds part ways after relegation

Leeds United announced the departure of manager Sam Allardyce by mutual agreement yesterday after the club’s relegation from the Premier League.

Allardyce, 68, was parachuted in to rescue the club in May with only four games remaining but Leeds finished second from bottom, five points adrift of the safety zone and six above Southampton.

He lost three and drew one of his matches in charge after replacing Javi Gracia.

Leeds said an announcement on the former England manager’s replacement would be made in the coming weeks.

“It has been an honour to manage Leeds United, a great club with an incredible fan base, who deserve to be in the Premier League,” said Allardyce in a statement on the club website.

“At this stage in my career I am not sure taking on this challenge, which is potentially a long-term project, is something I could commit to,” he added. “But I wish the club every success for the future and hope the club returns to the Premier League, where they belong.”

Leeds United chief executive Angus Kinnear thanked Allardyce “for being brave enough to step in and do all he could to save us”.

  • Mourinho charged over Europa League final

Mourinho charged over Europa League final

UEFA began disciplinary proceedings yesterday against AS Roma coach Jose Mourinho for using insulting and abusive language against the referee in the Europa League final against Sevilla.

Mourinho was filmed repeatedly calling English referee Anthony Taylor a “disgrace” in a profanity-laced tirade in the stadium car park in Budapest after Wednesday’s final, which Roma lost in a penalty shootout.

Roma will also be charged after their supporters threw objects and lit fireworks and caused crowd disturbances. Sevilla were charged with similar infractions.

Taylor booked 13 players, seven of them Roma players, while the bad-tempered game was littered with delays due to the unusually high number of fouls.

The English referee was then targeted by angry Roma supporters at Budapest Airport.

Referees’ body PGMOL said: “We are appalled at the unjustified and abhorrent abuse directed at Anthony and his family as he tries to make his way home from refereeing the UEFA Europa League final.”

  • Historic Manchester Derby

    Historic Manchester Derby

The 142nd FA Cup final will see a Manchester derby take centre stage for the first time beneath the famous arch of Wembley Stadium as treble-chasing Manchester City lock horns with bitter rivals and EFL Cup winners Manchester United this afternoon.

While the Citizens are seeking to lift England’s oldest trophy for the seventh time in their history, the Red Devils are hoping to get their hands on the prestigious prize for a 13th time.

Four years on from winning the first-ever domestic quadruple in English football, history beckons once again for Man City as they endeavour to become the first English team since rivals Man United in 1998-99 to win the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League in the same season.

The Citizens already have one trophy in the bag after clinching the top-flight title for a third successive year and for a fifth time in six seasons, with Pep Guardiola’s side ending the Premier League campaign five points clear of their nearest challengers Arsenal.

With one eye on their pursuit of the treble, a much-rotated City side were beaten 1-0 at Brentford in their final league fixture of the season last Sunday, a result that ended their exceptional 25-game unbeaten run in all competitions.

Nevertheless, Guardiola has wisely managed the minutes of his first-team stars over the last two weeks and hopes they have taken his advice on briefly ‘disconnecting’ from the rigours of their hectic schedule in preparation for today’s behemoth battle with their bitter rivals.

A journey to Istanbul for a Champions League showpiece event with Inter Milan awaits in a weeks’ time, but Man City’s focus is now on the FA Cup and their 12th final in the competition. The Citizens have won six and lost five of their previous 11 FA Cup finals, most recently romping to a remarkable 6-0 victory over Watford in 2019 – the joint-largest winning margin in cup final history.

Man City have seen off Chelsea, Arsenal, Bristol City, Burnley and Sheffield United – beating the latter 3-0 in the semi-finals courtesy of a Riyad Mahrez hat-trick – to book their Wembley appearance, with Guardiola’s side yet to concede in this year’s competition; only Preston North End in 1889 and Bury in 1903 have ever won the FA Cup without conceding a single goal.

The Citizens, who are also the highest scorers in this season’s FA Cup with 17 goals, have a perfect record in major domestic cup finals under Guardiola – winning five in total since his arrival in 2016 – although they have lost four of their last six visits to Wembley and have failed to score in three of those.

The carrot of FA Cup glory against Man United to boost their treble hopes is certainly alluring, but Man City will not take their opponents lightly today after losing 2-1 at Old Trafford in the most recent derby showdown in January.

Indeed, Man United enter their 21st FA Cup final – the joint-most of any team in the competition’s history along with Arsenal – in buoyant mood after winning their last four Premier League matches to secure third place and Champions League football for next season, albeit finishing 14 points behind champions Man City.

The Red Devils followed up an emphatic 4-1 home victory over Chelsea a week last Thursday with a 2-1 final-day win against Fulham last Sunday, with goals from Jadon Sancho and Bruno Fernandes turning the game on its head after Kenny Tete had opened the scoring.

After beginning the 2022-23 campaign with harrowing losses to Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford back in August, few would have envisaged Man United bouncing back in such impressive fashion, and after guaranteeing a top-four finish, Erik ten Hag is seeking to steer the club to their first-ever domestic cup double.

The Dutchman ended United’s six-year trophy drought by guiding his team to EFL Cup glory at the end of February, beating Newcastle United 2-0 at Wembley, and the Red Devils will certainly take great pleasure in halting Man City’s pursuit of the treble by winning the FA Cup today.

Man United are competing in their first FA Cup final for five years after successfully navigating their way past Everton, Reading, West Ham United, Fulham and Brighton, winning their first four ties by a 3-1 scoreline before eliminating the Seagulls in a nerve-racking penalty shootout following a goalless semi-final draw after 120 minutes.

The Red Devils last had their hands on the FA Cup in 2015-16 when they required extra time and a late Jesse Lingard winner to beat Crystal Palace 2-1, two years before losing 1-0 to Chelsea in their most recent final in the competition.

Only Arsenal (14) have ever won the FA Cup on more occasions than Man United (12), although the latter do hold an unwanted record for the joint-most defeats (eight) in the competition’s showpiece event along with both Chelsea and Everton.

Man United will, on this rare occasion, head into Saturday’s final as slight underdogs having lost three of their last four derby clashes with Man City by an aggregate score of 12-4, including a heavy 6-3 Premier League defeat earlier this season.

However, they can take some inspiration from their FA Cup head-to-head record with the Citizens as they have won five of the last six meetings with their noisy neighbours, most recently winning 3-2 away from home in January 2012 – the only exception being a 1-0 semi-final loss at Wembley in 2010-11.

    FA CUP FACT BOOK

    Who gets what?

Whoever wins the showdown between City and United will earn £2million. With that being said, it isn’t all doom and gloom for the runners-up, who will pocket £1m.Both City and United have already earned well over £1m in the lead-up to this weekend’s final. In winning their semi-final games alone, both teams earned £1m.

When is the FA Cup final?

This year’s FA Cup final between City and United will take place on Saturday, June 3, with kick-off at 3pm (4:00pm Nigerian time).  The final between the two teams is set to be played at Wembley Stadium.

Manchester City fans may be confident heading into the game. The side have won three of the last five meetings with United. Erik ten Hag’s side won the last encounter back in January, with Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford scoring in a 2-1 win.

    BLUE CORNER

Haaland wants nothing but Man City’s treble

Manchester City striker Erling Haaland has said he “will do everything” to help the club to a historic Treble.

City have won this season’s Premier League and can add to that if they beat Manchester United in the FA Cup final this afternoon  and Inter Milan in the Champions League final on 10 June.

United won each of those trophies in 1999 and are the only English club to have done such a Treble.

“It would be unreal to make this history,” said 22-year-old Haaland.

Despite City’s domestic dominance, they are yet to win the Champions League and Haaland hopes he can be the missing piece to secure success in European football’s biggest tournament.

“This is why they bought me of course, to get this, we don’t have to hide that,” Haaland told BBC sports editor Dan Roan.

“It would mean everything. I will do everything I possibly can to try to make it happen. It’s my biggest dream and hopefully dreams do come true.”

He added: “But as well it’s not easy – it’s two finals against two good teams that will do everything they can to try to destroy that.

“They will be motivated, they will be ready and we have to play at our best, because if we play at our best we have a really good chance of achieving exactly that.”

City overtook Arsenal this season to win a third Premier League title in a row under manager Pep Guardiola.

“We’ve been chasing the whole season so when we won the Premier League it was a big relief,” said Haaland, who scored 36 top-flight goals this season.

“Now we’ve got two finals left and now the only thing we can focus on is these two finals before the vacation.”

Haaland has had a stunning first season in English football since joining City from Borussia Dortmund last summer.

    RED CORNER

Fernandes tips United to stop City’s quest for treble

Erik Ten Hag has set high standards at Manchester United this season, but Bruno Fernandes might be even more demanding.

After watching his team beat Chelsea 4-1 to add a top-four finish to the Carabao Cup, Ten Hag declared his first year at Old Trafford as a success. Fernandes, though, disagrees. And he won’t change his mind even if United beat Manchester City at Wembley today and lift the FA Cup.

“For this club, a successful season is winning the league, winning the Champions League, winning big trophies because the past of this club, the history of this club, is big,” said Fernandes in an interview with ESPN. “The big target in the league is winning it.

“It was a good season but not a successful one because success is winning. We are now building something we see can be special in the future.”

The target, ultimately, is City. They have won the Premier League title in five of the last six years and reached two of the last three Champions League finals. It’s a level of dominance United used to enjoy under Sir Alex Ferguson and hope, one day, to achieve again. There are some at Old Trafford who choose to shy away from the comparisons with their city rivals, but not Fernandes. “We want to win the league and that’s what they did this season,” he said.

“City has done this so, yeah, they are the team to beat, we can say that because they won. City are probably the team that is playing the best football for so many years. They’ve been consistent with that and they deserve to be in this place because they’ve been really good.”

This season, City have been too good. The title is already in the bag and if they win against United in the FA Cup and then Inter Milan in the Champions League, they will complete the treble — a feat only achieved once before in English football by Ferguson’s United in 1999.

Ahead of the FA Cup final, United fans are split on the biggest motivation for winning the game. Is it simply to win the trophy, or would there be more joy in stopping City from winning it and, with it, ruining any chance of the treble?

  • Ravaging effects of noodles on consumers’ health sparks concerns

Ravaging effects of noodles on consumers’ health sparks concerns

    • Consuming two or more packs goes beyond recommended daily sodium intake – Experts
    • High blood pressure, other health challenges associated with product – Nutritionists
    • studies reveal harmful preservatives

Noodles business appears to be expanding continuously and consistently with different brands flooding the market almost on a daily basis. For many households, noodles has become the staple food with some consuming it more than once in 24 hours. According to data from the World Instant Noodles Association (WINA), Nigeria is currently among the largest consumers of instant noodles with 1.92 million servings as of May 2020. While the boom may be good for the economy, experts say consumers may be doing a lot of damage to their bodies without knowing it. Findings revealed that noodles contain harmful preservatives and eating more than one pack with the sauce, as many people do, amounts to consuming more than daily sodium intake recommended by the World Health Organisation. INNOCENT DURU writes on the need for regulatory authorities to draw the attention of the consuming public to the other side of the popular delicacy, just like tobacco companies are advised to do to their customers.

Suzan, a mother of two, has a very tight schedule because of the nature of her job. She leaves home very early and returns quite late in the evening. To save her kids from hunger, she frequently prepares noodles for them, sometimes adding  sardines, egg or chicken to the delicacy in order to make them enjoy it.

“My children like noodles a lot and I don’t hesitate to cook it for them. As a very busy person, it saves me a lot of time as it can be ready within minutes.

“In fact, there is hardly a day that they don’t eat it, because they find it very enjoyable as it is garnished with a lot of things that make it attractive,” she said, oblivious of the fact that addiction to noodles, according to experts, could pose serious health challenges to the children in the long run.

And Suzan is not alone in her ignorance as to the long-term damage addiction to noodles could have on the consumers. Wumi, an undergraduate, is also incurably addicted to it and goes to school with at least two cartons of it every semester.

She said: “It is my regular food in school. I go to school with two cartons of my brand, and if it finishes, I buy more.

“I eat it a lot because I find it difficult to cook before going for early morning lectures. When I come back late in the evening, noodles are also the way out for me.

“It appears cheap in the long run because two packs cost just about N300.  Even if I don’t have money to buy eggs, fish or meat, I can just enjoy my noodles like that.”

Wumi said as a young lady, she likes her meals to be tasty, hence she uses the sauce that accompanies the delicacy generously.

“I don’t enjoy it if it is not tasty. The sauce is actually the thing in eating noodles,” she said.

The growing number of vendors who make noodles at strategic spots has also influenced the decision of many people to make it a daily meal.

Emeka, a bachelor, says he patronises the vendors because it saves him the stress of cooking.

“I don’t have the time to cook. My pots are  hardly dirty. Whenever I  am hungry, I just call on the woman that makes noodles around me. She does two or three packs and fries egg with it,” he said.

Emeka he never sensed danger in his habit. “It is just the easy way out,” he said.

Ebenezer is another regular consumer of noodles, especially at night.

“I get home very late at night and I always ask for noodles for dinner,” he said.

Explaining why he opts for noodles at night, he said: “I eat it because I feel it is light and will more easily digest than heavy foods like eba, fufu or pounded yam.

“It actually digests in no time. At times, you get up to urinate at night and you find that your stomach is empty.

“That is why I eat it at night so that it can easily digest.

“It is really my ideal food and I have always told my friends who also get home late  from work to resort to noodles instead of swallows.”

How noodles consumers overshoot quantity of daily sodium recommended by WHO

While many of the above named consumers would not see anything wrong with their addiction to noodles, experts have raised the alarm about  the long term effects of living on the product.

A nutritionist, Obembe Seun, said the sodium content of noodles is very high.

He said: “We all know what sodium is all about. It triggers high blood pressure.

“Deficiency of sodium causes muscle cramps, so we cannot ask people not to take sodium. But it should be minimal.

“Excessive intake of sodium is what triggers high blood pressure because it is classified as micro nutrient; not macro.”

Noodles, he further said, are not healthy. “What are the nutritional benefits and values  of noodles? It constitutes a nuisance and  very detrimental to the body.

“That is why we have all these brain lapses, fatigue and other issues.  How many people  did you see taking noodles that are really okay? It vanishes from the stomach almost as soon as you eat it.

“There is something we call food psychology. If you tell somebody not to eat something, you should be able to give them alternatives.

“There is spaghetti. Is it not the same thing  as noodles? They should substitute and just forget about noodles.

“The only nutrient in noodles is the egg, maybe the vegetables or the carrots too.”

Another nutritionist, Ruth Onokudikoghene, told our correspondent that the medium pack of noodles has the sodium content that makes up a daily sodium recommendation.

She said: “If you are eating one medium pack, it means you are already taking the quantity of salt that the World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends for a full day.

“But that won’t be the only food you eat for that day. You have to prepare other meals.

“If you take two or three packs, it means you have gone beyond your sodium recommendation for that day.”

She advised individuals who have underlying conditions like hypertension to go for alternatives.

“When  people know that they are at risk, it is better they go for healthier options because of the sodium content in some seasonings.

“They should alternate it with more of our local foods, which you know are not prepared with preservatives.”

For children, she said, it is not about having an underlying condition. “You know food itself is a habit. It is preferable to start up by letting children get used to local food like  rice. Even sweet potatoes are easy to prepare.

“For food, it is a deliberate action to make sure you are healthy. Mothers should go the extra mile to make sure that their children learn healthy food habits so that when they grow up, they can actually stay healthy without having to be prone to non-communicable diseases.

“It is a graduation to ensure that a child stays healthy through the life cycle.”

Decrying the effects of noodles and many other packaged foods on children in particular, Ruth said: “Many children suffer poor development eating all this.

“I even encountered a child today. He is underweight. His teeth are just coming out at age one and he could barely walk. Teething should start at six months.

“At times, you see some low income earners not giving healthy food to their children. You will see them getting soft drinks and pastries. That is why Nigeria is the number one malnourished country in Africa.

“Anemia is another problem. A four or five-year-old had hemorrhage because the child was not given sufficient vegetables.

“You even hear some mothers saying that their children don’t eat our local food because of the early introduction of food that has added sugar.”

Nutritionist excludes noodles from meal plans

Asked if she would in any way include noodles in a meal plan for a client, Ruth said: “I will not add noodles to a meal plan if somebody asks me to prepare one, because a meal plan means that you are ready to make a decision to make a healthy food selection.  Accompanying meal plans will come with enlightenment, with education.

“Enlightenment will now ensure such an individual can be able to understand how to make food selections that the individual can be able to be aware of. ‘Oh, this food is locally available. This food is beneficial for me in the long term and not just in the short term’.

“I  get them more enlightened so that they can understand that whatever meal guide that I am going to place them on should be something that would be sustainable throughout their lifetime.”

Noodles contain harmful preservatives – Studies

Aside from the concerns raised by nutritionists in the country, foreign studies have also revealed that some noodles contain harmful preservatives

One of the studies obtained from thehealthsite.com said that butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and tertiary-butyl hydroquinone (TBHQ) – a chemical preservative derived from the petroleum industry – are usually added in instantnoodles to keep them usable longer. Regular intake of these chemicals can cause severe health issues.

“A 2005 study published in Drug Metabolism and Disposition warned that long-term constant exposure to TBHQ may prove carcinogenic. It can also cause asthma, anxiety, diarrhea and adversely affect the liver and the reproductive organs.

BHA is included in the list of chemicals with possible endocrine-disrupting effects. Disruption in the endocrine system may lead to several adverse developmental, immune, neurological and reproductive effects.”

They are made of maida (white flour)

Studies from the website further said: “Most instant noodles are made of maida or refined wheat flour. Because maida is highly processed, it is devoid of any nutrition but has plenty of calories.

“Excessive or regular consumption of white flour has been linked to increased risk of weight gain, obesity, type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance and elevated cholesterol.

“A South Korean study also concluded that excessive instant noodle consumption can trigger obesity and metabolic ailments like diabetes, high blood pressure, hypertension, and heart problems.”

They are loaded with bad fats

Since instant noodles are fried in palm oil, lard or butter before packaging, they are usually high in saturated fats. The seasoning may also contain oils high in saturated fats. Saturated fats, if consumed excessively or regularly, can raise the level of low-density lipoprotein (LDL, or the “bad” cholesterol) in the blood. High cholesterol increases the risk of heart disease as well as type 2 diabetes.

    They are high in sodium

Corroborating  local nutritionists’ position, the report said: “Sodium is essential for the proper functioning of your body, but too much isn’t good for your health. Excess sodium intake may lead to high blood pressure (hypertension), which, in turn, increases the risk of heart disease, heart failure and strokes.”

    They may also contain MSG

Some instant noodle brands add Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) as an ingredient in flavor packets that accompany instant noodles. This flavor enhancer is popularly used in Chinese, Japanese and Korean cuisines. Research has linked high MSG consumption over the years to excess weight gain. Consumption of this preservative may also cause symptoms like headaches, nausea, high blood pressure, weakness, muscle tightness and flushing of the skin in some people.”

Experts react to methylene oxide scare and NAFDAC response

Two months ago, April to be precise, the health department in Taipei, Taiwan’s capital, detected ethylene oxide in two types of instant noodles, including the Indomie chicken flavour, following random inspections.

It said the detection of ethylene oxide in the product did not comply with standards.

“The Taipei City Health Bureau reminds food industry that our country has not approved the use of ethylene oxide as a pesticide, nor has it approved the use of ethylene oxide gas as a disinfectant,” the department said in a statement.

“The industry is sure to implement autonomous management and confirm that the raw materials and products should comply with food safety and health management.”

Following this development, the health ministry in Malaysia examined 36 samples of instant noodles from different brands since 2022 and found that 11 samples contained ethylene oxide.

Ethylene oxide is a colourless, odourless gas that is used to sterilize medical devices and spices and has been described as a cancer-causing chemical.

Shortly after the news broke, National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC ) Director General, Professor Mojisola Adeyeye,  said that beginning from Tuesday, 2 May, the agency would commence processes to test randomly selected products to ascertain the claims before reaching out to the public.

Not long after, the agency, while announcing that it had banned the importation of the controversial brand, assured Nigerians of their safety consuming the locally produced Indomie Instant Noodles.

She said: “We use this medium to assure the public that a thorough investigation of the products will be conducted both at the factory and market levels and our findings will be communicated.

The public is also hereby informed that the implicated Indomie Instant Noodles ‘Special Chicken Flavour’ is not registered by NAFDAC for sale in Nigeria.

Commenting on the safety of noodles produced in the country, one of the above nutritionists, Obembe Seun, challenged NAFDAC and individual nutritionists to conduct separate tests on the product and determine their safety.

His words: “NAFDAC have their own lab; let them do their research and let other people do theirs and let everybody submit their papers.  They should just put the nutritionists at the frontline because these are the people that can detect the truth.

“Let them bring the microbiologists, the biochemists to the forefront. Let them discuss and debate on it. The superior argument gets the win.”

He added: “In nutrition, there is what we call capacity strengthening, knowledge upgrade and research and development. Let them look into this aspect. Nutritionists should come up and speak out on what they know about all these.”

Obembe advised NAFDAC to make use of nutritionists  to tackle importation of unhealthy food into the country through the porous borders. “This is an opportunity for them to create jobs for the nutritionists at the borders, airport and boundaries so that nutrition too can come in instead of narcotics.  If they can employ nutritionists in all these areas, they will do a better job.

“Nutritionists will be able to go into supermarkets and check for expiry dates or adulterated products. It will be a very good opportunity for the nutritionists if they can create jobs for them in that area.”

Also speaking, Ruth said: Banning importation is not just the solution.  Before I heard the news about the use of methylene Oxide in noodles, I had a session with an audience talking about hypertension on Tuesday. And even before then, I usually tell my audience to try to make moderate consumption of packaged food because we understand the role of preservatives, and salt and sugar are major preservatives in food. That is one of the reasons why we enlighten individuals to get used to the local food.

“Even for children, when I do nutrition education for the mothers at immunization centers, I make them to understand that once you are introducing other food to your children, get used to the local food because when a child is trained to eat more of our local food, the child grows up with that habit. It would enable that person to minimise consumption of other foods that appear their peers are taking. They won’t take such food as much because they have been trained.”

She added: ”There was even a research to the effect that mothers that start introducing vegetables to their children, overtime, the child gets used to eating vegetables.

“Food is a habit and as such a poor habit should be avoided. This thing is not just about noodles; it is about other easily available food.”
