Super Falcons in tough qualifying section for Paris 2024

    • May face Ghana, Cameroon

The road to next year’s Women’s Olympic Football Tournament for nine-time African champions Nigeria is haunted by Ghana and Cameroon, following the draw conducted in Cairo yesterday.

After a probable meeting with Ethiopia in the second round of the campaign in October this year, the Falcons will have to confront the winner of the ties Uganda/Rwanda and Cameroon.

Once they cross the Cameroonian hurdle, the Nigerian girls will be up against the winner of the Guinea Bissau/Benin Republic against Guinea/Ghana.

Cameroon stopped Nigeria from qualifying for the London 2012 Olympics, when they edged a two-leg encounter on penalties in Yaounde.

Equatorial Guinea stopped the Super Falcons in the race to Rio 2016 Olympics while Cote d’Ivoire proved the stumbling block to the last Games held in Tokyo.

However, the Super Falcons have severally stopped the Indomitable Lionesses from reaching the FIFA World Cup, including beating them in the Women AFCON quarter-finals in Morocco last year to deny the Lionesses a spot in this year’s finals in Australia and New Zealand.

The Falcons equally defeated Cameroon right in front of their home fans in the Final of the 2016 Women Africa Cup of Nations.

The Falcons stopped Ghana from reaching the Women AFCON in Morocco last year, and have also severally been the pain in the neck of Ghana’s Black Maidens as far as FIFA World Cup berths are concerned.

  • Mourinho targets 6th European cup as Roma battle Sevilla

Mourinho targets 6th European cup as Roma battle Sevilla

Roma manager Jose Mourinho has never lost a European final while Sevilla are six from six in Europa League finals. Something has to give in Budapest tonight.

Portugal’s Mourinho has five major continental titles to his name – two Champions League wins, two Europa League trophies and last year’s triumph in the inaugural Europa Conference League with the Italian side.

The 60-year-old announced himself on the big stage in 2003 when he led Porto to the UEFA Cup, the Europa League’s precursor, and the following year he won the Champions League.

Inter Milan became champions of Europe on his watch for the first time in 45 years in 2010 and he celebrated his fourth continental trophy during his spell at Manchester United in 2017, winning the Europa League.

Twenty years on he is defying the naysayers who said his career was on the wane after a disappointing spell at Tottenham.

If Roma lift the trophy in Hungary, Mourinho will pull clear of Giovanni Trapattoni, who also won five major European trophies in his coaching career.

The much-travelled Mourinho is in no doubt he is improving with age and experience.

“Better coach, better person, same DNA,” said the Portuguese. “The DNA is motivation, is happiness. Desire for these big moments, and these are the feelings that I try to pass to the boys.

“I think you can be better and better with your experiences. I think your brain becomes sharper and the accumulation of knowledge is better with the years.

“I think you stop when you lose motivation. My motivation grows up every day. I think I am better now.”

Roma, who edged past Bayer Leverkusen in the semi-finals, finished sixth in Serie A but victory against their Spanish opponents this week would be a passport into the Champions League.

Mourinho’s future beyond this season is uncertain but he says for now his only focus is on today’s match at the Puskas Arena.

In order to achieve his target, Mourinho must get past Sevilla, who are kings of Europe’s second-tier competition – their tally of six wins is double that of Inter Milan, Liverpool, Juventus and Atletico Madrid.

They are 11th in La Liga but have turned on the style in Europe, coming from 2-0 down at one stage in the first leg against Manchester United to see off the English giants before beating Juventus in the semis.

It is a remarkable end to the season for the club, who flirted with relegation for much of the campaign, sacking Julen Lopetegui and then Jorge Sampaoli, before Jose Luis Mendilibar steadied the ship.

Veteran wing-back Jesus Navas is aiming to win the Europa League for the fourth time, just two months after Mendilibar took charge.

“We transform (on Europa League nights) and it’s incredible how we come out in every match,” said the former Manchester City player.

“It’s a competition that has given us a lot, and the joy it provides us every time we take part in it drives us to go as far as possible.

“What Jose Luis has done with us has been fundamental. He has brought the best out of us, and when you look at the teams we have eliminated, it’s something to be very proud of. He deserves to stay with us for a long time.

“He’s a coach who always pushes us, and who has that work ethic to train hard and get the best out of us. His arrival has coincided with an incredible turnaround in our season.”

U20 World Cup: Don’t underrate Flying Eagles against Argentina, says Bosso

Flying Eagles’ Head Coach Ladan Bosso believed his wards is capable of upstaging the applecart when they face much-fancied hosts and six-time champions Argentina tonight in their FIFA U20 World Cup Round of 16 duel in San Juan .

Bosso said matter-of-factly that his team will not be intimidated by the physicality of the opponents and the capacity crowd expected at the venue.

The indigenes of the Land of Pampas barnstormed through their group stage, winning all their three matches against Uzbekistan, Guatemala and New Zealand, scoring 10 goals and conceding only one. They are already among the favourites for the title, by both pedigree and current form.

Despite winning their first two matches, including beating early rave makers Italy in commanding fashion, the Flying Eagles lost to Brazil 2-0 in La Plata on Saturday and some bookmakers think they stand no chance against the pumped-up home team.

“This is the World Cup and it is wrong to under-rate any team,” Bosso said as his boys prepared for their official training session at match time (6pm Argentine time and 10pm Nigeria) , adding his Africa Cup of Nations bronze medallists will be ready to give as much as they receive in Wednesday’s encounter.“ We won two of our three matches and had the same number of points in our group as Brazil and Italy. We are no pushovers in this campaign.

“It is going to be an interesting game. We want the quarter-final ticket and the Argentines also want the quarter-final ticket.

“We will go in there and dig our feet into the ground, ” he said.

Meanwhile, USA became the first team to secure their spot in the quarter finals after a blistering 4-0 win against New Zealand in Mendoza last night.

  • Today is ‘World No Tobacco Day’

Today is ‘World No Tobacco Day’

Sir: World No Tobacco Day is observed on May 31 annually with the goal to combat the increasing prevalence of tobacco consumption all over the world owing to its hazardous effects on smokers and those exposed to second-hand smoke.  The theme of this year is “We need food, not tobacco”

It has been estimated that there are more than 1.3 billion tobacco users worldwide. Over 80% of these tobacco smokers are mostly residing in low- and middle-income countries of Latin America, Africa and Asia.

In Nigeria, the WHO has estimated that over 30,000 Nigerians die yearly as a result of tobacco-related diseases. The Nigeria Tobacco Control Alliance (NTCA) has also said that 246 men die weekly from tobacco-related illnesses in the country.

According to cardiologists, the nicotine contained in tobacco is a very dangerous addictive chemical and a disease-carrying ingredient which damages the entire vital organs and blood vessels of smokers and those exposed to second-hand smoke by speeding up the flow of blood to their hearts that breeds high blood pressure, accelerate their heart rate and narrows their arteries. This circumstance can often lead to heart attack and death.

Some neurologists have raised the alarm that cigarette smokers can experience Erectile Dysfunction (ED) also known as impotence because of how smoking restricts blood flow to their penis.

Epidemiologists have also warned that harvesters of tobacco crops are at risk of being infected by a disease from nicotine poisoning known as “the Green Tobacco Sickness”. Its symptoms include nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness, breathing and sleeping difficulty, chills, increased heart rate, abdominal cramps, diarrhoea, pallor, excessive sweating and weakness.

The Six MPOWER measures, ratified by the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control in 2008 designed to assist countries to halt to the rising prevalence of tobacco products has not yielded the desired result. Instead of decreasing, the number of tobacco smokers is increasing like wildfire. It is flabbergasting how obstinate individuals turn their eyes to the product’s packaging warning messages on the dangers of tobacco use. Most painful is how children and teenager are embracing the tobacco smoking culture from parents and films.

An African proverb says, “When the rhythm of the drum beat changes, the dance step must adapt”. Since the six MPOWER strategies of the WHO did not provide the desired result in low- and middle-income countries of Africa, Latin America and Asia, governments should do their utmost to propose a new approach and strategy for fighting against the rising prevalence by banning its cultivation and assisting its farmers to embrace the cultivation of the nutritional crops in order to distance millions of people from severe hunger. The huge funds that are squandered annually for sponsoring and subsidizing production of this disease-causing crop must be brought to an end.

Here is sounding the alarm for African leaders to wake up from their deep slumber and address the genesis of food insecurity of the continent by converting millions of tobacco crop farmers into nutritional food farmers.  A 2022 report of the Food and Agricultural Organisation of the UN estimated that 828 million people regularly go to their beds with hungry stomachs worldwide.

Cigarette smokers should be reminded that their good health is the greatest wealth for themselves and their families. They should enjoy and appreciate this pre-eminent asset before it is snatched by some of the tobacco-related illnesses by quitting smoking.
