Obasanjo endorses Akpabio, Abbas as Senate President, Speaker

A chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) Hon. Olujonwo Obasanjo has thrown his weight behind the consensus candidates for the leadership of the 10th National Assembly, describing their choice as the best.

Obasanjo endorsed Godswill Akpabio as the Senate President and Abbas Tajudeen as Speaker.

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the party on Monday announced the consensus zoning arrangement and nominated preferred candidates for the leadership positions of the National Assembly.

Though some aspirants in the two Chambers have called for immediate review of the arrangement, APC National Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu appealed for calm from the aggrieved lawmakers.

He promised that the NWC will look into the zoning arrangement after consultation with the President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed when he returned from his working tour of Europe.

Addressing newsmen in Abuja on Saturday, Obasanjo, a son of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, appealed to all the elected members of the 10th National Assembly to support the decision of the party and rally around the consensus candidates for the good of democracy and the incoming administration.

Admitting the principle of separation of powers among the three arms of government, he however argued that it was a fallacy that such separation is absolute.

He described the decision of the NWC as thoughtful, stressing the consensus arrangement is also for the good of the nation if they find ways of working as harmoniously as possible” with the other arms of government.

Eulogsing the choice of Akpabio as Senate President, Obasanjo said the former two-term Governor of Akwa Ibom has distinguished himself as a governor and Minister.

He also recalled his exploits as a Senator during the 8th National Assembly. Obasanjo noted that when, “He (Akpabio) became a Senator and as a minority leader, he stood against Saraki’s high handedness as the Senate President to join the ruling party to add value and political strength in the Assembly.

“Senator Akpabio obtained APC’s presidential nomination form but on the night of the primary, he was the first aspirant to step down for the now president-elect, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“Senator Akpabio has earned the respect and trust of the leadership of the party and the president-elect and all other stakeholders. Therefore, his nomination as the next president of the Senate is very welcome.”

On the Speakership, Obasanjo said: “Hon. Tajudeen Abass’s exceptional contribution to law-making alone is enough to secure him the office of the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

“This unassuming gentleman from the famous Zazzau royal family is a trailblazer in the aspect of lawmaking that he alone has sponsored 74 bills and 21 of them have been signed into law by the President.

“Hon Abass is so loved and trusted by his constituents that he has been returned to represent them for the third term in the House.

“Hon Abass’s constituency projects are well on the ground in every part of the constituency and of the 114 bills signed into law between 2019 and now, he single-handedly has 21 in a House of 360 members.”

Appealing for the support of all elected lawmakers, the APC leader prayed, “If we crave competence not only in the executive but the legislature too, Akpabio as President of the Senate and Abass as Speaker of the House of Representatives should be supported by the incoming lawmakers.”

EPL: Southampton record loss against Fulham, relegation confirmed

Southampton’s 11-year stay in the Premier League ended in tame fashion as their relegation was confirmed with defeat at home by Fulham.

Aleksandar Mitrovic, making his return from an eight-game ban for pushing referee Chris Kavanagh, sealed Saints’ fate with a stooping header after Carlos Vinicius’ opener.

The hosts could have few complaints about the outcome after producing a muted performance despite knowing they had to win to have any chance of pulling off an unlikely survival mission.

They did have a Carlos Alcaraz strike disallowed for a marginal offside just before Vinicius broke the deadlock but the confident Cottagers were comfortably the better side.

Willian’s first-half volley was cleared off the line by fellow Brazilian Lyanco, who had earlier been fortunate to escape a video assistant referee’s penalty check for handball.

But Vinicius tucked home after Lyanco’s clearance ricocheted to him kindly off Harrison Reed and Mitrovic nodded in his 12th league goal of the season from Harry Wilson’s cross.

Southampton, lethargic throughout, had no response after falling behind and will be playing Championship football next season for the first time since 2012.

EPL: Aston Villa defeat Tottenham at Villa Park

Aston Villa’s transformation from relegation strugglers to European contenders continued with victory over Tottenham, whose hopes of securing a Champions League place ended at Villa Park.

Jacob Ramsey’s tidy eighth-minute finish was followed by Douglas Luiz’s free-kick to earn Unai Emery’s side a sixth successive home win.

Spurs, who have been in the top four for the majority of the season, were flat and uninspiring, although Harry Kane did score a consolation from the penalty spot after he was fouled by goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.

Tottenham failed to register a single attempt on goal in the first half as Villa completed the double over their opponents for the first time since the 1995-96 season.

Villa, who were 19th in the table after losing four of their first five Premier League games of the season, are seventh, level on 57 points with sixth-placed Spurs, who can finish no higher than fifth.

Villa have taken 45 points out of 69 since Spaniard Emery officially took charge on 1 November, when the club was one point above the relegation zone after Steven Gerrard’s sacking.

EPL: Chelsea yet to secure home win in seven games, draw against Nottingham Forest

Taiwo Awoniyi scored twice as Nottingham Forest claimed a valuable point against Chelsea in their fight against Premier League relegation in a match that came alive in the second half.

Forest took an early lead when Awoniyi, who scored twice in Monday’s 4-3 win against Southampton, got in front of recalled Blues goalkeeper Edouard Mendy to head in the opener from Renan Lodi’s cross.

Raheem Sterling equalised after the break when he swept home Trevoh Chalobah’s cross and the England winger then turned inside Felipe before curling the ball beyond Keylor Navas seven minutes later.

But Frank Lampard’s side led for just four minutes at Stamford Bridge as Awoniyi flicked home Orel Mangala’s delicate lob into the six-yard box to secure a draw for the visitors.

It ended a run of seven successive league away defeats for Steve Cooper’s men and leaves them three points above third-bottom Leeds United with two games remaining.

Forest, who had taken just six points from a possible 51 away from home this season before the game, face Arsenal at home next Saturday and travel to Crystal Palace on the final day of the campaign.

Chelsea, who are now winless in seven home games in all competitions, stay 11th and face three of the top four within a week – Manchester City, Manchester United and Newcastle United – to end their miserable season.

EPL: Man United secures three points at Old Trafford, revives top four hope

Manchester United bounced back from consecutive Premier League defeats by beating Wolverhampton Wanderers at Old Trafford to strengthen their bid for a top-four finish.

Erik ten Hag’s side had lost to Brighton and West Ham to give Liverpool – who were one point behind in fourth at the start of the day – hope of snatching a Champions League spot at their expense.

But Anthony Martial opened the scoring in the first half before Alejandro Garnacho added a second in stoppage time to secure a win that moved Manchester United four points clear of the Reds with three games remaining.

With Marcus Rashford out through injury, it looked like being a difficult day in front of goal for the hosts as they missed a number of decent chances, particularly through Antony.

The winger curled an effort just wide after racing into space before sending a header over from close range when unmarked.

But Antony provided the assist for the first-half breakthrough when he was played in by Bruno Fernandes and he unselfishly squared to Martial for the tap-in.

Antony had another opportunity to get on the scoresheet in the second half but he drove a shot just wide of the post after being set up by a Fernandes backheel.

However, substitute Garnacho finally got Manchester United’s second when he raced through in the fifth minute of stoppage time before firing past Dan Bentley in the Wolves goal.

The visitors rarely threatened as they finished the game without a shot on target.

Manchester United remain fourth but are level on 66 points with Newcastle in third. Wolves, meanwhile, are 13th.

  • EPL: Eze secures three points for Crystal Palace

EPL: Eze secures three points for Crystal Palace

Two fine strikes by Eberechi Eze earned Crystal Palace a Premier League victory over Bournemouth at Selhurst Park.

Eze slammed home from six yards shortly before half time, before curling into the top corner following Michael Olise’s fine pass as the Palace number 10 made it 10 league goals this season.

Bournemouth offered little in a match between two sides safe from the prospect of relegation.

Palace remain 12th in the table, now four points above Bournemouth in 14th.

Victory ensured Palace completed the league double over Bournemouth, having won 2-0 at Vitality Stadium on 31 December.

That proved to be their final win under Patrick Vieira, who was dismissed after they failed to win any of their subsequent 12 top-flight matches.

It was a run which threatened the Eagles’ Premier League status, however their descent was halted by the appointment of Roy Hodgson and five wins from the last eight games.

The question is now whether the 75-year-old, contracted to the end of the season, will extend his second spell at Selhurst Park.

EPL : Leeds United secure late draw at Elland Road stadium

Leeds United’s Premier League survival hopes received a late lift as they came from behind to earn a battling point against Newcastle United at Elland Road – in a match with three penalties and a red card.

Interim manager Sam Allardyce will be delighted by the spirit shown by Leeds as it looked like they would suffer a damaging defeat despite taking the lead through Luke Ayling’s early goal.

In a thunderous atmosphere, the game appeared to have turned when Patrick Bamford’s penalty on the half-hour was saved by Newcastle keeper Nick Pope, the disappointment deepening when Callum Wilson restored equality for the visitors from the spot moments later.

Wilson put Newcastle, who are looking to confirm a place in the top four, ahead with another penalty after 69 minutes when the video assistant referee ruled Junior Firpo had handled.

Leeds looked beaten but staged a rally and equalised when Rasmus Kristensen’s shot deflected in off Kieran Trippier’s head 11 minutes from time.

They had to hold on for the final minutes as Firpo was second off for a second bookable offence as he brought down Anthony Gordon.

There was an incident on the touchline towards the end too, as Newcastle boss Eddie Howe was shoved by a spectator who got into the manager’s technical area from the home end before being dragged away by security staff.

Allardyce’s team remain in the bottom three a point behind Everton but he may yet come to see this as a valuable result.

  • Milan sweat on Leao for UCL reverse against Inter

Milan sweat on Leao for UCL reverse against Inter

Milan coach Stefano Pioli has revealed that there is a ‘good chance’ that Rafael Leao should be fit enough to return to action against Inter in the second leg of the Champions League semi-final on Tuesday evening.

The Portuguese international hobbled off after just 11 minutes of the Rossoneri’s most recent Serie A fixture with Lazio last Saturday, just days before the first leg of the European derby.

Whilst there had been much speculation over his availability in the build-up to the Champions League clash, Leao was ruled out on Tuesday afternoon after undergoing last-minute fitness assessments at Milanello.

Leao will also be unavailable for Milan’s upcoming game against Spezia this  evening, but Pioli revealed in an interview with Milan TV on Friday afternoon that the 23-year-old could mark his return in the second leg of the semi-final tie.

The coach told Milan’s internal media channels: “We have some minor problems, such as Rafa’s unavailability tomorrow, but there is a good chance he will be able to train on Sunday and be fit for Tuesday.”

“Zlatan and Florenzi are still out though and Krunic and Messias will also be unavailable tomorrow.”

Ismael Bennacer also suffered a serious injury during the first leg against Inter and requires surgery to repair the cartilage in his knee, which rules him out at least for the remainder of the season.

“With all our heart and affection, for the stage of the season we are at and the seriousness of the injury, this setback was unfortunate,” Pioli added. “But they are part and parcel of the risks attached to our job
