  • Tinubu should review APC’s National Assembly zoning arrangement, says Gagdi

Tinubu should review APC’s National Assembly zoning arrangement, says Gagdi

President-elect Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been urged to review the zoning arrangement of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the presiding officers of the 10th National Assembly.

One of the strong contenders for the office of the House of Representatives Speaker, Yusuf Gagdi, made the call on Wednesday while featuring on Channels Television Politics Today programme.

“I believe the President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu is a democrat and most of these decisions were taken without his inputs.

“I am looking forward to the time that the President-elect will sit down with some of us.

“I am very optimistic that Tinubu will sit down with us and ensure proper consultation for fair, just and collective decisions that will be taken,” Gagdi said.

The legislator said the review was necessary to ensure that the Northcentral zone is factored into the equation.

The ruling party on Monday unveiled the proposed zoning arrangement.

According to the Publicity Secretary of the party, Felix Morka, the ruling party had zoned the Senate Presidency to the South-South, Senate Deputy President, zoned to the Northwest.

The party, according to Morka, also zoned the office of the Speaker to Northwest, while the office of the Deputy Speaker went to the Southeast.

This proposed arrangement has been generating controversy within the party.

Some aspirants on Wednesday visited the national secretariat of the party and urged the leadership of the party to review the decision.

Reacting on the issue on national television, Gagdi said the arrangement lacked fairness and equity.

Gadgi, who criticized the party for not consulting with the aspirants, urged Tinubu to intervene with a view to review the arrangement.

“I can tell you for free that there was no consultation whatsoever with us and that is why you saw that contestation. We are not aware of anything.

“Where is the justice, intention for peace and unity? How will two presiding officers of the National Assembly be zoned to a geo-political zone?

“Among the three zones in the North, the zone that gets the predominant number of Christians is Northcentral and yet, it is the same Northcentral that has a mixture of religion that delivered better to the APC.

“In the presidential election, the Northcentral donated four out of six states. The Northwest donated two states out of six or seven.

“Again, we are not saying that the party should not zone positions, but that it should be done for equity, fairness and justice.

“In the spirit of fairness, one of the presiding officers should be in the Northwest and the other one should be in the Northcentral.”

Confronted by the fact that the National chairman of the party, Senator Abdullahi Adamu already represents the Northcentral, Gagdi said: “Our National Chairman can only speak on our party issues and he cannot represent the interest of the NNPP or PDP mem
