Gbenga popularly known as Pablo died of suspected food poisoning.

The deceased was said to be waiting for the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) call-up letter.

Sources said he and his girlfriend were hospitalised after taking a meal eaten from an undisclosed restaurant in Akungba.

The sources said the deceased and his girlfriend were treated and discharged at Aduloju Hospital, Iwaro.

Another source said the deceased and his girlfriend were treated for typhoid.

It was learnt that Gbenga was found dead inside his room after neighbours broke into his room when he was not seen the next day.

“The moment we noticed he was not responding to calls and knocks on his door, we barged into his room through his window around 11am, when we noticed he did not open his door.

“He is a lovely and entertaining person. Yesterday, we were made to understand that his girlfriend’s health was critical, and was just discharged.”

A source who pleaded anonymity, disclosed that Gbenga was not the first person to complain about food poisoning, adding that few weeks ago, it took God’s intervention to save a student who ate poison in an undisclosed restaurant.

Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Olusegun Akanbi, who confirmed Gbenga’s death, said he died Sunday Morning.

He said: “The Head of the Department of Philosophy just called me and it was discovered that he passed on this morning, and his parents had already come.”

RULAAC petitions IGP over ‘false parade’ of tailor as cop killer

The Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC), has petitioned the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Alkali Usman, about the alleged false parade of a tailor, Thaddeus Ojokoh, in Imo State as a suspect in the killing of some policemen.

The centre made the allegation in a letter dated May 8, signed by its Executive Director, Okechukwu Nwanguma.

The non-governmental organisation (NGO) said Ojokoh, 53, was in custody following his arrest in a market by the Anti-Kidnapping Unit of the Tiger Base police unit in Owerri, when the policeman was murdered.

It said Ojokoh was arrested on April 15, and has been in detention since then on an allegation of being a member of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The Imo State Police Command later issued a statement saying he was among the suspects who killed some policemen on April 21.

RULAAC said it learnt from the family of Ojokoh that the police had been keeping him incommunicado, adding that they “seriously fear for his life because most people arrested by the police in Imo State and labelled IPOB members have usually been executed extrajudicially or disappeared.”

The group urged the IGP to probe the “mystery surrounding the claim by the Imo State Police Command that a man who had been in police custody was among those who carried out the dastardly killing of police officers in Imo State on a date that the man was still in the custody of the police.”

  • Transcorp Power surpasses minimum capacity target

Transcorp Power surpasses minimum capacity target

    • Attains 680.83Mw generation

Transcorp Power Limited yesterday became the first power generation firm to be certified as having fulfilled obligations as contained in the privatisation requirements since the power sector privatisation commenced in 2013. It currently generates 680.83Mw above its minimun set target of 670Mw.

At a meeting of the National Council on Privatisation (NCP) presided over by the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, in Abuja, yesterday, a “Discharge certificate” was presented to the firm. It was received on its behalf by the Group Chairman, Transnational Corporation Plc (Transcorp), owner of Transcorp Power, Mr. Tony Elumelu.

A presentation of “Discharge Certificate” is issued to a firm upon the fulfilment of all privatisation conditions. The implication of this is that Transcorp Power will no longer be subjected to post-privatisation monitoring. Transcorp Power Limited, located in Ughelli, Delta State, has an installed capacity of 972 megawatts (Mw).

Osinbajo lauded the firm for surpassing one of the key targets set for it – a minimum available capacity of 670Mw, for which it attained 680.83Mw instead.

“Post-privatisation monitoring is an important aspect of Federal Government’s privatisation programme. Transcorp Power has been able to ensure compliance and surpassed expectations with all post-privatisation deliverables. I commend Tony Elumelu and his Transcorp team for this feat. I urge Transcorp Group to continue in that path and even do better. This being the first should not be the last post privatisation discharge event,” the VP said.

Director-General, Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE), Alex Okoh, commended the Board and management of Transcorp for the milestones achieved in turning around the enterprise.

According to him, Transcorp has met and exceeded the performance targets and all other covenanted obligations agreed during the signing of the privatisation agreement in 2013.

Okoh disclosed that although a capital expenditure totaling N58.612 billion was covenanted for phase1 and phase 2 as ‘additional investment’ but the actual investment made by Transcorp was the sum of N83.85b, leading up to a score of 143 percent.

Said he: “Transcorp Power increased the generation capacity of the plant by 227 percent from the operational status as at handover in 2013.”

Elumelu thanked the Federal Government for the trust and confidence in Transcorp.

He said the believe in improved access to electricity has been a motivating factor for the huge investment made. Improved access to electricity, Elumelu further explained, means helping to industrialise Nigeria.

“Because of this we invest in the power sector and we will continue to invest more, especially in line with our philosophy of Afri-capitalism, we cannot develop Nigeria and Africa without improvement in access to electricity.  So we think the single most important we as private sector can make is to help invest in power and uplift our people out of poverty,” Elumelu said.

He said in addition to fulfilling the post-privatisation performance criteria, Transcorp has driven a strong indigenous agenda as its plants are managed and fully operated by Nigerians, thereby building the expertise of Nigerians; creating jobs and reducing unemployment in the country.

“Safety is very important to us as well, since we began operations in 2013, we have recorded zero incident till date.

“At Transcorp Group, we do well and do good. We have grown together with our Host communities, enriching lives, and improving the community,” Elumelu added.

Transcorp Plc acquired Ughelli Power Plc (now Transcorp Power Limited) from the Federal Government on November 1, 2013 during the privatisation of the power sector. At the time of acquisition, the plant had an available capacity of 160Mw. Transcorp invested and increased the available capacity to 680.83MW, representing a 227 percent increase, within four years of takeover, this surpassing the five year target of 670MW set by the BPE. Transcorp Power Limited is a member of West African Power Pool and a participant in the ECOWAS Regional Electricity Market. Presently, the firm supplies electricity to the ECOWAS Regional Market.

    • Marketers: we can’t wait to buy petrol from plant

The Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO) yesterday said it planned to seek funding for truck procurement from either the Federal Government or private sector to scale up its operation to match the demand for petroleum products haulage from the Dangote Refinery.

Recalled that President Muhammadu Buhari has scheduled to inaugurate the 650,000 barrel per day capacity refinery in Lagos on May 22, 2023.

Speaking on phone yesterday, NARTO President, Alhaji Yusuf Lawal Othman, said: “I am sure that we are going to look for financing of trucks either from the Federal Government or any other person so that we will have smooth operation. So, we are very happy.”

According to him, the refinery will guarantee availability of petroleum products.

Noting that the facility will also create jobs, he added that it will save Nigeria the much-needed foreign exchange (forex) since the refinery.

Othman described the refinery as one of the best success stories of the country

He said: “This is a very good development for any well-meaning Nigeria. It is a good development, especially for the operators in the downstream because there is guarantee of availability of petroleum products in the country.

“It means that it guarantees employment for all. Too, the government and people of Nigeria will save foreign exchange because it will produce here in Nigeria. It will produce engine oil and so many associated products. This is one of the best things that have happened to this country.”

Besides, the Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria (MOMAN) yesterday said they were anxious to buy products from the refinery.

Its Executive Security, Mr. Clement Isong, said the association has commenced discussions with the refinery’s management.

He expressed happiness over the good news, stressing MOMAN will be glad to purchase fuel from there.

“Off course, we are very happy. We will be very happy to buy petrol from them (Dangote).

“We have been talking to them. We can’t wait for them to start. We will buy from them as soon as they start,” he said.

Similarly, the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) said the refineries will quicken Nigeria’s crave for full deregulation of the petroleum sector.

Speaking with The Nation on phone, the association’s National Vice President, Alhaji Abubakar Maigandi, described the coming on stream of the refinery as good news.

He confirmed that IPMAN will begin plans to buy products from the refinery instead of the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).

Maigandi said: “It is a very good and welcome development. It will help the deregulation that the government is about to do. Yes, we too are planning to start buying from him when he starts. When the sector is fully deregulated, IPMAN too will buy product from Dangote.”
