EPL: Salah’s goal secures three points for Liverpool

Mohamed Salah continued his superb scoring form as Liverpool made it six Premier League wins in a row by defeating Brentford to move one point behind Manchester United in the race for the top four.

The Egypt forward became the first player in Reds history to score in nine consecutive home appearances in all competitions, while his winner was his 100th goal for the Reds at Anfield.

His 13th-minute attempt was not the most eye-catching goal of his career – Salah bundling the ball over the line from close range after Virgil van Dijk’s cushioned header across the six-yard box.

But Salah’s 30th goal of the season set Jurgen Klopp’s side on the way to another crucial win that keeps alive Liverpool’s outside hopes of qualifying for next season’s Champions League.

Liverpool are on 62 points, one behind fourth-placed Manchester United who have two games in hand – including one at struggling West Ham United on Sunday (19:00 BST).

At a vibrant Anfield, Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo thought had equalised only for it to be ruled out for offside after a video assistant referee check, while Cody Gakpo missed a great chance to make it 2-0 after the break from point-blank range.

Before the game, many Liverpool fans booed the national anthem which was played as a tribute to King Charles III on the day of his coronation, despite the club saying they know some fans “have strong views on it”.

A yet-to-be identified 10-year-old boy has allegedly killed his unnamed friend, aged 12, with his grandfather’s pistol in Otuan community of Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

The incident reportedly occurred during the week while the two young friends were playing and mouthing possession of bulletproof charms.

An eyewitness claimed that the boys were acting scenes from a movie they had watched when the deceased boasted that he had spiritual bulletproof and challenged the 10-year-old boy to shoot him and see if the bullet would enter.

The eyewitness claimed that the 10-year-old quickly ran into his grandfather’s room, picked up a pistol and fired shots at his friend which resulted in his death.

It was gathered that the owner of the pistol, who is an ex-service man, was not at home when the incident occurred.

It was also learnt that after firing the shots that killed his friend, the 10-year-old quickly abandoned the gun and fled the scene to an unknown destination.

80,000 candidates sit for rescheduled UTME

Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, on Saturday expressed satisfaction with conduct of the rescheduled 2023 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) for 80, 000 candidates.

Adamu, who alongside Registrar, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof Is-haq Oloyede, monitored the exam at the Computer Based Test (CBT) centre located in Mambilla Barrack, Asokoro, Abuja, expressed delight with the smooth conduct of the exercise.

He said: “I am very happy with what I have seen. The (temporary) holding room (for candidates) , and the arrangement in which they are taking the examination, I think everything is in order.”

While saying no negative incident was recorded in the conduct of the UTME at the CBT centre, the minister, however, made a case for a temporary holding place for candidates waiting for the scheduled time of the exam.

“Everything is okay, have you seen any problem? Perhaps they should have a class for the holding room, I think that is the only improvement they will make here,” Adamu said.

JAMB’s Head of Public Affairs and Protocol, Dr Fabian Benjamin, in an interview on Saturday, said about 80,000 candidates, who could not sit for the 2023 UTME within their scheduled time owing to no fault of theirs, sat for the rescheduled UTME across the country.

According to the JAMB’s spokesperson, candidates affected included those who were verified at their centres but could not sit the examination, those who could not be biometrically verified, those with mismatched data, among others.

He said the deployment of innovations in the conduct of the exam paid off as the exercise recorded the lowest reported cases of infractions.

“In this year’s UTME, issue of examination malpractices was reduced to almost zero level,” the JAMB spokesperson said.

On when the results of the rescheduled UTME would be released by the examination body, he said the board’s management will analyse the conduct of the exercise after its conclusion before it will make a decision on that.

Recall that the Board had last week Tuesday released results of candidates who had earlier took part in the exam, that commenced on Tuesday, 25th April.

A total of 1,586,765 candidates indicated interest in sitting for the 2023 UTME.

Kane secures 3-points for Tottenham, becomes second-highest goal scorer in PL history

Harry Kane became the outright second-highest goalscorer in Premier League history as Tottenham ended a four-game winless run with a much-needed victory over Crystal Palace.

Kane, 29, expertly headed in Pedro Porro’s cross in first-half added time to reach 209 goals in the competition and surpass former Manchester United and Everton striker Wayne Rooney.

It proved enough to settle the contest at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and move Spurs above Brighton into sixth place – although they have now played three games more than the Seagulls, who face Everton on Monday.

The hosts had gone closest to a breakthrough before Kane’s opener when Cristian Romero’s near-post header cannoned off the crossbar, while at the opposite end Clement Lenglet produced a superb tackle to halt Jeffrey Schlupp’s progress towards goal.

Sam Johnstone kept Palace in contention with a close-range save to deny Son Heung-min following an excellent pass by Romero inside the final quarter of an hour.

But, with Kane in position to clear a loose ball from his own six-yard box, Roy Hodgson suffered just his second loss in seven games since returning to management, leaving his side 12th.

Toti scored his first Wolves goal as Julen Lopetegui’s side beat European hopefuls Aston Villa at Molineux to banish any lingering fears of Premier League relegation.

The hard-fought victory lifts Lopetegui’s team to 40 points, 10 clear of 18th-placed Nottingham Forest, who have four games left to play.

Portuguese centre-back Toti gave Wolves the lead inside 10 minutes, sending a towering header beyond Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez via the underside of the crossbar.

The visitors dominated possession and went close to equalising in the first half through Emiliano Buendia and Ollie Watkins, before Ashley Young steered a low, curling shot past Jose Sa’s right-hand post early in the second half.

Tyrone Mings blazed Douglas Luiz’s delivery over the crossbar as Villa applied heavy pressure late on, but the hosts held firm to claim a fourth consecutive home league victory and a fourth successive clean sheet in front of their own fans.

Villa stay eighth but have now played three games more than seventh-placed Brighton, who are one point ahead and host struggling Everton on Monday.

“So, it is a war situation and it is a bit complicated. I just want to appeal to our people there to just be patient, follow the rules, you will be home.
