Amnesty chief seeks recruitment of ex-agitators as policemen, customs officers, others

Interim Administrator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP), Major General Barry Ndiomu (rtd), has made a case for the recruitment of ex-agitators as policemen and Customs officers.

Since he took over as Interim Administrator, Ndiomu has focused on creating platforms that can gainfully employ ex-agitators who have gone through training under the Amnesty Programme.

PAP, in a statement by Special Assistant on Media to the Interim Administrator, Mr Thomas Peretu, noted that the Programme was not designed to continue in perpetuity.

Since he took charge in September, the PAP boss has visited several ministries, departments and agencies (MDA), including security formations, where he has had fruitful conversations on how ex-agitators under the Amnesty Programme could be engaged in a bid to helping them take full ownership of their lives.

Earlier this month, Ndiomu paid courtesy call on the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Alkali Baba Usman, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, where he solicited the support of the Police High Command in the recruitment of ex-agitators to its rank and file as well as officers’ corps.

Ndiomu’s request was premised on the fact that the PAP has over the years trained a lot of youths from the Niger Delta region who would fit into manpower needs of the Police.

Ndiomu told the IGP that the Police would find some of the ex-agitators very useful to the force based on the top-notch security trainings they have received since the inception of the Programme thirteen years ago.

Usman who expressed disappointment that potential recruits from the Niger Delta hardly turn out for recruitment exercises conducted by force in the region.

He assured the interim administrator that the Police were ready to partner the PAP in the recruitment of officers especially at the grassroots.

Ndiomu recently visited the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) to explore ways of mainstreaming former agitators of the Niger Delta in the recruitment, scholarship and capacity-building programmes of the agency.

At the meeting with NITDA’s leadership, the interim administrator requested that qualified and skilled ex-agitators should be engaged in Nigeria’s labour market through partnership with the agency.

After the engagement, Ndiomu confirmed that his request was embraced, which according to him, required the management of NITDA “to set up an inter-agency committee charged with the responsibility of engaging ex-agitators in the new digital world.”

Under this arrangement, Niger Delta ex-agitators captured under the amnesty Programme are to benefit from series of train-the-trainer digital programmes that would offer them the opportunity to earn monthly stipends while improving on their digital skills as trainers.

According to NITDA DG, “Graduates of the agency’s training programmes will be provided with the necessary tools to compete with their counterparts elsewhere as global digital entrepreneurs or global employees”.

Ndiomu’s search for opportunities for ex-agitators also took him to the head office of the Nigeria Customs Service where he met with the Comptroller-General, Hameed Ali who assured him that the body was ready to partner the PAP in future recruitment exercises that may be conducted before the end of the current democratic dispensation.

He told Ndiomu that the service would be fair to all Nigerians irrespective of their state of origin.

“Even though we may not grant the Southsouth any special concessions, efforts will be made to ensure the quotas allocated to each state are filled in addition to the four mandatory persons per local government model of recruitment already entrenched in the system,” the comptroller-general said.

  • Former Pope Benedict dies at 95

Former Pope Benedict dies at 95

Former pope Benedict XVI, who became the first pontiff to resign in some 600 years, has died aged 95.

Pope Francis, who replaced him as head of the Catholic Church, had asked the faithful to pray for him at the end of his general audience on Wednesday morning.

The Vatican said Benedict’s body will lie in state in St Peter’s Basilica from Monday.

“With sorrow I inform you that the Pope Emeritus, Benedict XVI, passed away today at 9:34 in the Mater Ecclesiae Monastery in the Vatican,” a spokesperson said, according to Sky News.

“As of Monday morning, 2 January 2023, the body of the Pope Emeritus will be in Saint Peter’s Basilica so the faithful can bid farewell.”

The health of the Pope Emeritus, as Benedict was called after he stepped down, had undergone a “worsening in the last hours” due to his age, the Vatican said, and doctors were constantly monitoring his condition.

Francis had gone to visit Benedict at the Mater Ecclesiae Monastery in Vatican City after the audience.

Cardinal Vincent Nichols, the head of the Roman Catholic Church in England and Wales, said Benedict was “one of the great theologians of the 20th century”.

He said: “I am deeply saddened to learn of the death of Pope Benedict. He will be remembered as one of the great theologians of the 20th century.

“I remember with particular affection the remarkable Papal Visit to these lands in 2010. We saw his courtesy, his gentleness, the perceptiveness of his mind and the openness of his welcome to everybody that he met.”

“He was through and through a gentleman, through and through a scholar, through and through a pastor, through and through a man of God – close to the Lord and always his humble servant.

“Pope Benedict is very much in my heart and in my prayers. I give thanks to God for his ministry and leadership.”

Benedict had lived in the Vatican, a separate nation-state that is within the boundary of the Italian capital Rome, after he ceased being pope in 2013.

He had become increasingly frail in recent years after dedicating his post-papacy life to prayer and meditation.

For hundreds of years before Benedict became the Holy Father, popes had headed the Catholic Church until their deaths.

On 11 February 2013, Benedict’s surprise announcement to stand aside shocked the Catholic world, and forced the church to grapple with an event it had not seen in centuries.

He said he wanted to resign as he no longer had the physical and mental strength to run the church.

Before being elected pope in 2005, the then Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger served as the head of the Vatican’s doctrinal watchdog, called the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

He held the powerful role for 24 years, earning the nickname “God’s Rottweiler” for his strictly conservative theological views.

Some ultra-traditionalists even refused to acknowledge Pope Francis as a legitimate pontiff after Benedict stood down, criticising Francis for his more welcoming approach to members of the LGBTQ+ community and to Catholics who divorced and remarried outside the Church, arguing both were undermining traditional values.

No hanky-panky in slain lawyer’s case, IGP assures Sanwo-Olu

There will be no cover-ups in the investigation and trial of the killer of Lagos lawyer, Mrs. Bolanle Raheem, the Inspector-General of Police Usman Alkali Baba has promised.

He spoke when Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu visited him.

Mrs Raheem was shot by an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Drambi Vandi at Ajiwe in Ajah on Christmas Day.

She was in the company of her family on their way from church.

The governor promised to ensure an open investigation and prosecution of the culprits.

Sanwo-Olu, who said the outcome of investigations was very important to the government and people of Lagos, stressed that the process leading to justice for the victim must be transparent.

He spoke on Thursday morning when he visited the IG at the Police headquarters in Abuja.

The governor said: “We have come here to extend season greetings to the Inspector-General of Police and also brief him on the security situation in Lagos State, especially the very recent unfortunate death of Mrs. Bolanle Raheem in the hands of a policeman.

“We really need to get a sense of security architecture in the state and ensure that incidents like this are reduced to the barest minimum.

“We also need better collaboration because we did not have any other police force.

“It is also important for us to come here and get a sense of how soon the offending officer can be charged to court.

“And we have gotten a positive response and engagement from the IG himself.

“We called the Commissioner of Police and he briefed us as to what they are doing in Lagos.

“Essentially, it is to continue to work with the Police, what we can do around providing some additional equipment, and ensuring we can jointly have advocacy programmes that can enhance and improve public and police communication…”

Usman assured Sanwo-Olu there will be no cover-up in the murder case.

He said: “Governor Sanwo-Olu is here to find out how far we have gone in investigating the incident that happened on Christmas Day.

“I have assured him that this incident will be investigated.

“The state Attorney-General will intervene in the case for him to take over the prosecution from the police.

“I can assure you there will be no hanky-panky.

“We are saddened about the incident and again extend my condolences to the bereaved family, Lagos and Nigeria at large.

“We will continue to improve on our officers’ handling of firearms, and we also appeal to Nigerians to be responsible.”

Our lives under threat, Lagos parks administrators cry out

The Lagos State Parks Administrator (LSPA) Caretaker Committee has alleged threats to life and intimidation of transport union members following the suspension of Road Transport Employer Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) activities in Lagos State.

It also bemoaned the alleged police invitation of its members in Lagos to Abuja over the RTEAN crisis despite the dispute having been submitted to the National Industrial Court, Ikoyi for adjudication.

The committee urged aggrieved persons to respect the courts and maintain the status quo pending judgment.

It made the plea during an interactive session with journalists in Lagos.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu ordered the immediate suspension of RTEAN activities in Lagos State due to a power tussle among factional RTEAN members which claimed one life at Iyana-Iba in Ojo Local Government (LGA) on October 15, 2022.

The state government, later in October, set up a 35-man caretaker committee, called the Lagos State Parks Administrator Caretaker Committee, chaired by the Oniba of Iba-Ekun, Oba Sulaiman Adeshina Raji, with Oluseyi Bamgbose as Vice Chairman, to oversee the union’s activities.

Comrade Bamgbose and other executive members of the committee said they had reviewed the previous administration led by Alhaji Musa Muhammed for, according to them, over 14 years as State Chairman.

In their view, Alhaji Muhammed owed them some answers about his tenure.

Some Hausa leaders of the members of the union, including Alhaji Umar Katagun and Alh Ahmed Muhamed Bala, said peace, unity, progress, and financial stability had returned to the union since the committee took over.

Reality TV star, Tokunbo Idowu, aka TBoss, has counselled mothers with toddlers to always ensure they have nice underwear on.

The mother of one, perhaps speaking from experience, explained it was important for such mothers to put on neat underwear.

This is in case their toddlers make them run, skip or even raise their clothes in public.

She said it was crucial that prying eyes around are not greeted with dirty, tattered and embarrassing undies.

“As a mother with a toddler, one thing you absolutely must do, if you like don’t comb your hair, have no make-up on, don’t brush your teeth, forget your wig that’s fine.

  • Nigerian comedians good enough for Netflix, Amazon, says Xtreme

Nigerian comedians good enough for Netflix, Amazon, says Xtreme

Nigerian comedian, Oluwatosin Kupoluyi, popularly known as Xtreme, has expressed optimism that 2023 will be a transforming year for comedians.

He hopes they will push their art to a wider and global audience.

In an interview in Lagos, he said Netflix and other online streaming platforms were particularly interested in African movies and acts.

According to him, this will offer comedians an opportunity to explore the global audience.

He said: “Trust me, we are making meaningful content that will attract Netflix, Amazon and other international distribution companies.

“We comedians are making more effort to distribute our stand-up shows and series to international distribution companies like Netflix, Amazon.

“Nigerian comedy industry has fallen short of this recognition, with the country’s top comic artists barely known beyond national borders.

“Some comedians already have specials on Netflix, but we need to explore and dominate this platform more.”

The comedian and event host also said it was important to explore the effects of the saturated Instagram skits market.

“Everybody is now an online comedian.

“New media jokes are on the rise and fast gaining popularity on social media and even threatening the business of stand-up comedians.

“The art of stand-up comedy is struggling in Nigeria, especially with comedians choosing to go the route of Instagram skits.

“Unfortunately, there are no royalties accruing to comedians for their creative works.

“It thus becomes the famed ‘monkey dey work, baboon dey chop’ scenario, as any comedian can rehash a joke as if it is their own.

“If content continues to decline as witnessed on Instagram, we will be stuck with comedians whose only hope of making money off their craft is running ads for low-budget sex enhancement drugs.

“Humour is an essential ingredient in keeping Nigerians sane in these difficult times and I hope that with the right support and structures in place, the industry will thrive,“ he said.

The comedian said he started his career in the church, first as a chorister.

”Then my friends and folks realised I had a sense of humour and saw the potential of being the anchor of a church dinner event.

“Gradually, it turned out to be a big deal within and outside the church. This was in 2006.

“I don’t precisely attribute my rising career to a particular event, trend, skit or show, because it is the consistency that brought me this far,” he said.

Xtreme’s first attempt in creating professional TV content was Chronicles of Solo, which got licensed to DSTV’s Africa Magic cable channel.

The sitcom is premised on the story of two live-in lovers and their wade through the journey of life and love. Season one and two is currently airing, and seasons three to six are getting set.

Adventures of Solo is a non-chronological humour-based web-series painting ‘Solo’ into multi-faceted characters and unique situations. It runs on the Youtube and Facebook ‘Xtreme Comedian’ platforms.

‘Zazu’ crooner Portable arrives on stage in white coffin

Self-styled ‘wahala’ singer, Omololami Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, has pulled an unforgettable stunt with his most dramatic entrance at his first headlined concert in Lagos.

The controversial street-hop was brought on stage in a white coffin by a group of ‘pallbearers’.

The show, tagged ‘Portable Live in Concert,’ took place on Wednesday night, at the Afrikan Shrine, Ikeja, Lagos.

Before D-day, Portable paid a visit to the residence of the Chairman of the Lagos State Parks and Garages Management Committee, Musiliu Akinsanya, popularly called MC Oluomo to invite and seek his blessings for his concert.

He shared photos with his ‘daddy’ while holding a box containing the Live In concert package.

He wrote: “So I went visiting my daddy @kingmcoluomo today as my concert is nearby my daddy is also coming through for the concert, see you all tomorrow biza biza #portableliveinconcert #portablelive”.

As the pallbearers clad in white dropped the coffin with the Zazu crooner in it.

The auditorium lights were dimmed and later went off, leaving the space dark.

Almost immediately, the stage got a little bit illuminated as the young men walked in bearing the coffin on their shoulders.

Placing it on the ground, they chanted, opened the coffins and the “Zazu” crooner immediately sat up just like the legendary wrestler Undertaker was known to do.

Afterwards, he stepped out of the coffin and began to perform.

The ‘grand’ yet strange entrance by Portable last night has continued to elicit varying reactions on social media.
