Exam malpractices capable of discrediting certificates, says NECO Chief

The Registrar/Chief Executive of National Examinations Council (NECO), Prof Ibrahim Wushishi has lamented the impact of examination malpractices on the society.

The NECO chief said examination malpractices have the tendency to discourage hard work among serious students, lowers educational standards, discredit certificates, and lead to the production of quacks.

He spoke in Abuja at a one-day sensitisation workshop on examination malpractice in Nigeria organised by the council in collaboration with the National Assembly.

Wushishi said: “Examination malpractices have the tendency to discourage hard work among serious students, lowers educational standards, discredit certificates, and lead to the production of quacks, thereby affecting the manpower needs of the nation.

“We must therefore take collective responsibility to rid them of this bad habit of wanting to cut corners.”

On her part, vice chairman of the Senate Committee on Basic and Secondary Education, Senator Akon Eyakenyi, lamented that examination malpractice is ruining the educational system of credibility.

“Examination malpractice is one practice that can completely ruin our education system of credibility. We therefore have a task to ensure that we rescue the soul of our educational system from the stretch hold of examination malpractice.

“It is the responsibility of every stakeholder in the education sub sector of our national economy to rise to the challenge of arresting the monster called examination malpractice before it causes more damage to our educational system.

“Managers of the education sub – sector should ensure the culprits should be punished and those who did well should also be appreciated to encourage them. Law enforcement and anti-craft agencies should continue to lay their helping hands and step up support for the fight against examination malpractice,” she said.

Also speaking, the chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Basic and Secondary Education, Professor Julius Ihonvbere, said some parents and schools are into the business of aiding and abetting exam malpractices, adding that such behaviour portends danger for the future of the country.

“In fact, the school authorities connive with others to carry out these acts. As we speak, in my constituency, schools are correcting between 50-60 thousand for those who want to register for WAEC or NECO. For WAEC, the exam fee is N18,000 but they are collecting from N45, 000 to N60, 000.

“We need to design how we can bring these institutions down and sanctions must be very severe,” he said.

On his part, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky Irabor, expressed the readiness of Nigeria’s armed forces to fully join in the fight against examination malpractice.

“The armed forces are fully with NECO in this fight. We must work the talk as exam malpractice can destroy many things in the country,” Irabor, represented by Chief of Defence Administration, Rear Admiral Muhammad Nagenu, said.

  • Nigerians won’t accept your lies, APC tells PDP

Nigerians won’t accept your lies, APC tells PDP

The Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has said that attempts by the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its flag bearer, Atiku Abubakar to de-market the achievements of the governing party will not work as Nigerians won’t give in to their lies.

The council also said that all surreptitious moves by the opposition to rewrite their ugly past that has plundered the country into the abyss of suffering will hit the rocks.

These positions were contained in a statement by the Director, Media and Publicity of the campaign council, Bayo Onanuga in Abuja on Saturday.

APC-PCC noted that recent slanderous utterances by the leaders of the opposition PDP and its presidential candidate against the ruling APC and President Muhammadu Buhari were not only insulting but an abuse of the collective intelligence of Nigerians.

Taking a swipe at PDP, the campaign council maintained that Nigerians have not forgotten the atrocious era of the opposition party, adding nobody would now accept all the lies being peddled by the PDP leaders in desperation for cheap votes ahead of next year’s elections.

The ruling party reminded the opposition of its failed attempt to change its name due to its atrocious record, by mounting podiums and trying to deodorise and beautify the party’s ugly era.

According to the council, “Leaders of Peoples Democratic Party and its presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar are playing on our seeming forgetfulness and insulting our collective intelligence.

“Having consistently shown a lack of capacity for introspection, PDP Leaders have been going about the country slandering the All Progressives Congress-led government of President Muhammadu Buhari, believing that as Nigerians we have forgotten their atrocious era and that we are unappreciative ignoramuses.

“Notably Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the party that once contemplated changing its brand name because of its atrocious record, has been emboldened by our assumed forgetfulness as a nation, mounting podiums and trying to deodorise and beautify the party’s ugly era.”

Recalling the series of blame games by the opposition, the ruling party campaign council cited Atiku blaming the APC for the emergence of Boko Haram, forgetting that the insurgents emerged in 2009 under his party’s watch.

“He (Atiku) blamed Buhari over the economic challenges, forgetting that he opportunistically joined the coalition that toppled the clueless PDP government of President Jonathan when the economy was nose-diving.

“Atiku has now been joined by Abubakar Saraki, the failed Senate President and saboteur-in-chief of the Buhari agenda, who in his latest comment in Ilorin, urged Nigerians to “go back to the PDP at both the State and the national levels”. In the famous words of Dino Melaye, we say “PDP: God forbid ”.

Pushing his party’s propaganda to an insane level, Saraki said: “From my trip round the country, I discovered that Nigerians are tired of the ruling APC government because they are overwhelmed with hardships,” he said.

The ruling party argued that in a sane society, PDP should not be canvassing for votes to be returned to office, when during their 16 years in power, they laid the foundation for the challenges we face today.

“Let us not forget what the party of looters did to our treasury, depleting foreign reserves to $28 billion by May 2015, even though a record N75 trillion flowed into the treasury from oil sales alone, with almost nothing to show.

“Let us not forget that the party of looters nurtured the conditions that led to the emergence of Boko Haram on our soil and it was so clueless about how to deal with the menace as our cities and people were bombed and maimed by Boko Haram terrorists.

“Let us not forget that for six years, the PDP allowed the insurgents to declare a Caliphate on our soil, controlling 17 local governments in Borno State and four in Adamawa, making Atiku unable to go to Jada, his hometown.

“Let us not forget that the PDP left our infrastructure decrepit, highways impassable after allotted money to contractors had been shared by party stalwarts.

“Let us not forget that this party now posing as recovery agents had already grounded our country and made our economy comatose before Buhari took over on 29 May 2015.

“Let us not forget that the two poorest states in our country, Sokoto and Bayelsa are states being governed by the PDP in the last 8 years.”

However, the APC-PCC noted that in the past seven and a half years, the Buhari-led administration has been trying to clear the mess left by the PDP predecessors.

The council said, “Despite the challenges faced on the economic front, among which is dwindling revenue exacerbated by oil theft, the government has been able to showcase many game-changing projects.

“One of them which temporarily opened on 15 December, is the Second Niger Bridge. The PDP promised the South East states and Ifeanyi Okowa’s Delta state that it would do the bridge. For 16 years, the party made one empty promise after another. Muhammadu Buhari 2018 decided to take on the project. He awarded it all over again and in record time the 1.6 kilometres long bridge is ready. And it comes with other ancillary infrastructure including a 10.3 km highway, a bypass to Owerri and a toll station at Obosi.”

The campaign council promised Nigerians that its presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, will build on Buhari’s legacy, improve the economy and the security situation, declaring to PDP that, “Nigerians have rejected you (PDP) and our people will not buy your lies again!”

Knowledge power when acted upon, says APU VC

The Vice Chancellor of Ahman Pategi University, Patigi, Kwara State, Prof. Mahfouz Adedimeji, has said it is imperative for Nigerians to always act on knowledge to empower and advance themselves and the nation.

Adedimeji delivered a lecture entitled:”Knowledge is power” at the orientation programme for the newly admitted students for the 2022/2023 academic session of the university on Thursday.

The pioneer VC stressed that acting on knowledge was important.

He stated that developed countries were advanced and powerful because they acted on knowledge. He also said people in the Western world were not superior to Africans in terms of their physical size or agility but they only derived their power from their capacity to generate and apply knowledge.

Highlighting how knowledge has changed the world, Adedimeji said APU was dedicated to empowering its students with knowledge and developing them into total individuals that would reflect the university motto, ‘wise minds, skilled hands’.

The erstwhile Director, Centre for Peace and Strategic Studies , University of Illorin, however, warned against possession of incomplete knowledge, which according to him can be just as dangerous as ignorance. He urged students to always pursue excellence in their studies.

He charged them to uphold the principles of good character, responsibility, excellence, discipline, integrity, as well as truthfulness while wishing them a successful academic sojourn in the institution.

Highlights of the programme, which was anchored by the Ag. Registrar, Mr. Dennis Onwukwe, included introduction of the university academic programmes and facilities to the students as well as interactive session which included questions and answers.

I will not succumb to blackmail- PenCom DG

The Director General of Pension Commission (PenCom) Mrs Aisha Dahir-Umar has said she has nothing to hide and is ready to open the books for scrutiny.

In a statement by PenCom management, she noted that there is a coordinated plan to bring the commission into disrepute with frivolous petitions to the
anti-graft agencies in collaboration with disgruntled insiders.

These elements, according to her, are yet to come to terms with the fact that PenCom
is no longer at their beck and call, alleging they have been sponsoring negative media reports and getting faceless groups to write frivolous petitions to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Mrs Dahir-Umar said although some low-level media outfits are giving a voice to these defamatory
petitions, those who know “how we conduct our affairs at PenCom are not in any way
bothered. Since I took over as the DG, we have undertaken far-reaching reforms within
the organisation which are yielding positive results.”

She described the era of “anything goes” as long dead and buried, declaring “Those who think they can use the commission to make money or that they should be the ones
calling the shots are bitterly disappointed and are sponsoring false publications and
trumped-up petitions. We will co-operate fully with the agencies.

    “Our message to the
disgruntled elements today is exactly as it was yesterday: we will not allow anyone to
pilfer pension funds for self-aggrandizement. It will never happen under my watch, if PenCom had anything to hide, we would have surrendered
to the agents of blackmail who have been on our case since 2017 when I became

  • Aregbesola blames Oyetola for Osun debt profile

Aregbesola blames Oyetola for Osun debt profile

Former Osun Governor Rauf Aregbesola has berated his successor Adegboyega Oyetola for the worrisome debt profile of the State declared by Governor Ademola Adeleke.

Adeleke claimed Osun owed N407.32 billion, blaming the administration of Oyetola for incurring the debt.

But Oyetola denied the allegation, maintaining Aregbesola’s administration obtained the loans.

Osun House of Assembly on Friday announced it will investigate the debt profile by inviting finance agencies to seek clarifications.

Aregbesola, in a statement by his media aide, Sola Fasure on Saturday argued that Oyetola caused the problem for himself because he allegedly refused to cooperate with Adeleke for proper handing over.

He stressed Osun Accountant-General should be in a better position to give the true particulars of the indebtedness of the State, adding that the impasse was between Adeleke and Oyetola, and so he should not be in the picture.

He explained that the two major loans he took had been liquidated while the other ones are long-term concessional facilities by the Federal Government with minimal monthly deductions.

Aregbesola said: “I will suggest that you look at all the loans and get to the Accountant-General of the state at Abere. I think the AccountantGeneral or the Permanent Secretary (Finance) would have better information because it is the Accountant-General that raised a memo based on the query of the governor.

“The matter is between the Adeleke and Oyetola administrations because the Aregbesola debts have been liquidated. It was not Aregbesola that took the N18 billion loan that was taken after the election. Oyetola took some other loans, including salary support from the Federal Government.

“They caused the problem for themselves. If they had set up a transition committee and if they had cooperated well with the incoming governor after they had lost election, there would have been a smooth change of government.

“They would have compared notes and there would be no rancour. But he was busy sowing mines on the path of the incoming governor, creating problems for him, and spending money with reckless abandon. What did he do with N18 billion? Now the new government is fighting back. If the new government takes the matter up to the EFCC, there would be problems for the Oyetola administration.

“They should count Aregbesola out of their problems because out of the three loans he took, two have been liquidated. It is only the long-term debt that is remaining and only the Accountant-General can give us the status of the loan because it is no longer what it was because deductions are being made.”

    Ends.
