Omo Agege consults Delta Catholic Priests, PFN

Deputy Senate President Ovie Omo-Agege has dismissed fears that Nigeria may be Islamised if the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Asiwaju Bola Tinubu is elected.

Omo-Agege assured Christians will benefit if Tinubu is elected as President Muhammadu Buhari ‘s successor.

He asked them to mobilise their members and vote for the former Lagos Governor.

The Delta APC governorship candidate spoke separately in separate town hall meetings with the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) chapter and priest of the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria in Agbarho and Oghara areas of the State.

At Agbarho, Omo-Agege told members of PFN to overwhelmingly vote for all APC candidates, including Tinubu and himself, saying the Church has so much to gain with Tinubu as next President.

He reminded Delta PFN leadership that though Tinubu is a Muslim, his wife, Senator Oluremi, is a pastor with the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) with five of their children as Christians.

The Delta Central lawmaker also informed the Christian leaders that Tinubu’s wife also hails from the state, saying the former Lagos Governor deserves Deltans’ support in 2023.

Omo-Agege assured the PFN leadership that he would run an all-inclusive government and regularly consult the body in decisions affecting the development of the state.

“There’s no doubt that our presidential candidate (Bola Tinubu) and his vice are both Muslims. It’s also true that his wife is a pastor. For a man who couldn’t islamised his wife and children, will not islamise Nigeria. Tinubu will be fair and just to Christians. Christians will benefit so much from his government.

“With Tinubu as President, Delta State has so much to benefit. We want the next president to come from Southern Nigeria. As for me, and my house and supporters we have decided we want a Nigeria like Lagos.

“This is beyond an individual. It is what we want as a country. If God answer my prayers and make me Governor of Delta State and Tinubu President, it becomes easy for me to convince Asiwaju to help me reopen the Warri, Sapele, Burutu and Koko seaports.

“As for Tinubu, his wife is from here (Delta), he paid the bride price in full.
I know how I treat my in-laws and I love them just the way I love my wife.
So, we expect Asiwaju to do same thing for us. I want the Church to support Tinubu and vote massively for him”, Omo-Agege said.

While answering questions from Catholic priests at the town hall meeting in Oghara, the APC governorship candidate said: “By God’s grace, when I become governor, we’re going to be asking questions on loans that are borrowed that were not properly utilized.

“This is my church and I feel comfortable here and I want to run an all inclusive government. I want to run a participatory Government, as governor every quarter, I want to hold a town hall meetings with the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria.

“Before we do our budgeting, I like to know the views of the Catholic Church, what area that is dearest to them that they want funds applied. I want to consult you every quarter, that way it becomes ‘our government’. I will come to you from time to time to consult, find out your views.”

He further said that his administration would budget funds for the maintenance of public infrastructure across the State.

Wike bags doctorate degree, donates N1bn to varsity

Rivers Governor Nyesom Wike has been conferred with the Honorary Doctor of Law Degree (Honoris Causa) by the Rivers State University (RSU).

The Governor, who donated N1bn to the school, called for a change in the educational standard insisting that the RSU must benchmark its academic programmes to meet global demands.

Wike, who spoke in Port Harcourt at the 34th Convocation of RSU on Saturday in Port Harcourt, said his administration had invested funds generously to improve infrastructure in the school and establish faculties particularly the College of Medical Sciences.

Wike recalled that at the inception of his administration, he constituted the Governing Council of the institution and charged them to develop the blueprint that would engender sustainable transformation in the university.

He explained that his administration also resolved the lingering strike of the academic staff and recalled the staff unjustly dismissed for union activities by the previous government.

The Governor said the action he took within his first two weeks in office restored industrial harmony to the institution.

“Third, we immediately started tackling the university’s infrastructural challenges one after the other. We completed, furnished and commissioned the long-abandoned faculty of law complex within our first 100 days in office.”

Wike also stated that his administration completed the faculty of Management Sciences, Faculty of Science and Technical Education, and Faculty of Environment Sciences within the second year of his administration.

The Governor said he started and completed the Senate Building in his third year in office, and the College of Medical Sciences buildings in his fourth year in office

He said: “We also built the Basic Clinical Science and the department of Clinical Sciences buildings, which were commissioned last week as components of the Medical College. We then transformed the former Braithwaite Memorial Hospital into the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital with the state of the art equipment.”

Wike remarked that the relatively new College of Medical Sciences of the University was on its way to becoming one of the country’s best medical schools as declared by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria.

The Governor recalled the review of the enabling law of the institution so it would reflect the multi-disciplinary structure and implement an enhanced salary structure for the university staff.

Wike said his administration also restored the multi-campus structure of the university that was cancelled by the military adding that the campuses are located in Ahoada,(East) Emohua, Etche, Sapkenwa; (Tai) Local Government Areas, fully equipped with faculty and administrative buildings, staff quarters and will commence academic activities soon.

He said: “A few weeks ago, we authorised the management to engage 1355 new academic and non-academic staff to resolve the staff shortfalls occasioned by retirements, resignations, and the establishment of new academic departments and centres.”

Wike said as the Visitor to the institution, he was satisfied with what had been accomplished with his administration’s investments over the last seven and half years.

“No doubt, the billions we have invested have significantly advanced this university in infrastructure, growth and prestige and empowered it with the capacity to produce the kind of graduates that we need to serve our State and country with character, commitment and responsibility”, he said.

With all these investment, Wike insisted that the university management must move the institution away from the existing academic model of processing graduates in their numbers after every four or five years, unmindful of the quality of knowledge and skills imparted.

The Governor maintained that RSU would not be rated high and respected globally unless it could link education with cutting-edge research to create new knowledge and innovation that converts ideas into wealth creation, jobs and human progress.

He said: “Graduates lacking adequate knowledge, dexterity and self-transformation cannot be helpful to society, nor will they be useful to themselves.

“Money spent on such graduates may have also been wasted as they will remain socio-economic burdens to their families, friends and community.”

Wike said N1bn donation to RSU was to enable the management cater for the needs of the multi-campuses.

He commended the management of the university for conferring on the Doctor of Laws (LL.D) Honoris Causa on him for his services to the university, the State and the nation.

The Vice-Chancellor of RSU, Prof. Nlerum Okogbule said the week long 34th convocation of the university has a total of 3314 students awarded the Bachelor’s degree, and 4982 students awarded the post-graduate degree.

Okogbule explained that governor Wike was honoured with the Honorary Doctor of Law Degree LL.D(Honoris Causa) because of the numerous levels of support his administration gave to the university

Court upholds Akande-Sadipe as APC Rep candidate for Oluyole

The Federal High Court sitting in Ibadan have dismissed a case filed by Hon. Olugbemi Sunbo against the victory of Tolulope Akande-Sadipe, who emerged as the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oluyole Federal Constituency in May 2022.

Akande-Sadipe won the APC primary on May 27 but an action was filed by Olugbemi on June 22, asking Justice Uche Nma Agomoh to invalidate the exercise that produced Akande-Sadipe.

On Friday, the court held that Akande-Sadipe, who represents the constituency, remained the rightful candidate of the APC in Oluyole Federal Constituency.

The suit, Samson OLUSUMBO Olugbemi vs APC & 2 others with no. FHC/IB/CS/109/2022, was dismissed on the grounds that there was no evidence that he won the primary.

“No evidence of any malpractice in the primary election was established by the plaintiff,” the counsels to Akande-Sadipe and APC, Olawole Abiola and Adeola Adedipe said.

The court inferred that the case was held to be statute barred having been filed over 14 days after the cause of action occurred, which is the APC primary election of 27th of May, 2022 contrary to the provision of the constitution that provides that any action challenging primary election must be filed within 14days of the primary.

The court upheld that the plaintiff does not qualify as an aspirant under the electoral act 2022 having not asserted that he participated in the primary.

The court ruled that there were no grounds put before it to nullify the ticket of the party in the custody of Akande-Sadipe, having fulfilled all the provisions of the law and complied with stipulated guidelines.

Speaking further, the Counsels said the Presiding Judge struck out the case filed by the appellant, Olasunbo Olugbemi saying it does not have jurisdiction to entertain the plaintiff’s action “because the plaintiff claimed that there was no primary election”.

“The court is only empowered under section 285(14) of the constitution to examine the absence of due process in the conduct of primaries of a political party. However, the plaintiff said there was no primary election. The court rightly declined jurisdiction”.

“The federal high court Ibadan is not the proper forum to commence the action because by the FHC Practice Direction on Pre Elections, 2022. An action must be commenced at Federal high court Abuja where the plaintiff complains against the decision of INEC and APC whose headquarters are both in Abuja”, the counsels said.

The court declared Akande-Sadipe as the validly nominated and authentic candidate of the APC for the Oluyole Federal Constituency House of Representatives seat February 2023 election.

What you need to know about proposed Fourth Mainland Bridge

Lagos is home to many inhabitants. As a true reflection of being the epicenter of commercial activities in the country, most major and minor roads in Lagos are congested.

While government exists to create an enabling environment, inhabitants are also struggling to survive and thrive in their respective businesses.

In order to manage the traffic congestion situation, the Lagos state government is about to begin the construction of the Fourth Mainland Bridge in the state. This bridge will connect the state’s two distinct areas — the Island and the Mainland.

The new bridge is designed to ease pressure on the three existing bridges between the island and the mainland — the Carter, Eko and Third Mainland bridges.

The State Government recently met with stakeholders to assess the possible environmental and social impact of constructing the Fourth Mainland Bridge.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is expected to announce the preferred handlers “before the end of 2022, most likely on or before December 24.

The project had gone through the competitive bidding process comprising the Request for Proposal Stage I and the Request for Proposal Stage II.

Three bidders have been shortlisted for the RFP Stage II. They are Mota-Engil (Nigeria & Africa) CCCC & CRBC consort; CGGC-CGC Joint Venture and CCECC & CRCCIG Consortium.

By April, the preferred bidder will move to site and commence construction.

The new fourth mainland bridge is at the centre of the synergy of traffic. There are eight roads aligned to the bridge. This bridge will make it easy and convenient for people to connect.

The bridge is expected to span about 37 kilometres, starting from Abraham Adesanya in Ajah on the Eti-Osa-Lekki-Epe corridor and transverse from the Northwest towards the lagoon shoreline of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway via Owutu/Isawo in Ikorodu.

An Environmental and Social Safeguard Consultant to 4th Mainland Bridge Project, Mr Kayode Oluwagbuyi had said the journey from Island to mainland would no longer be three to four hours.

“We expect that the journey will be just 30 minutes.” Oluwagbuyi asserted.

An uncertain number of homes and other buildings, mainly in informal settlements, will have to be demolished and terms of compensation agreed with residents.

On completion, the bridge is expected to become the second-longest bridge in Africa, featuring three toll plazas, nine interchanges, 4.5 km Lagoon Bridge, an eco-friendly environment, and other added features.
