JUST IN: Police repel attack on INEC Imo office

Police operatives on Friday repelled an attack by gunmen on Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office at Orlu in Imo State.

The hoodlums suspected to be members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed affiliate Eastern Security Network (ESN) stormed Commission’s office around 4.30 pm scaling the fence into the premises.

The police spokesman, CSP Michael Abattam, who confirmed the incident, said: “The gunmen suspected to be IPOB/ESN members threw Improvised Explosive Devices( IEDs) into the office from outside the fence shooting sporadically to fight their way into the office.”

He said the police operatives engaged the hoodlums in a gun duel and in the process a number of them sustained bullet injuries.

“They were suppressed, having suffered a huge defeat, with a number of them sustaining various degrees of bullet wounds, they retreated, into their vehicles and zoomed off but were given a hot chase by the operatives,” he said.

Lagos restates commitment to protect pupils

The Lagos State Government has restated its commitment to ensuring the protection of children in public and private schools across the State.

Speaking during the conclusion of a three-day intervention seminar tagged: “Safeguarding and child protection’’ for private schools, the Director-General of the Office of Education Quality Assurance (OEQA), Mrs. Abiola Seriki-Ayeni said the agency has ensured that schools complied with minimum safety standards as standardisation is important in child protection.

Seriki-Ayeni, who was represented by the Director, Private Education, and Special Programmes, Mrs. Falayi Bambi noted that the State Government has continued to put in place adequate measures to stop insecurity in schools, noting that OEQA will continue to work tirelessly in ensuring the safety of students so that teaching and learning will continue uninterrupted.

She highlighted the need for schools to recognise their role in ensuring children’s well-being and safety, especially as they spend a significant time of their day in school. According to her, schools are institutions of learning hence they have to comply with standards of learning as well as protection.

She noted that the state government is emphatic on child protection policy, but, however, emphasised that the state government should not be left alone to tackle the issue of safety and security in schools, noting that it is essential for schools to have a ‘child protection officer’ for complaint and inquiry.

She added that the doors of OEQA are opened for opinions and suggestions on how to improve the education standards as they affect learning outcomes in the State.

She urged participants to take advantage of the free online course “Introduction of Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy” on the agency’s website www.oeqalagos.com, which some educators have successfully completed, encouraging those who haven’t taken the course to do so.

  • We’ll end misery of Bayelsa residents – Tinubu

We’ll end misery of Bayelsa residents – Tinubu

The presidential candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has promised to end the deplorable level of development of Bayelsa State and restore its lost glory.

Tinubu, who spoke at the party’s presidential rally on Thursday at Oxbow Lake Pavilion Swalli in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State capital, accused those who have governed Bayelsa of under-developing Bayelsa.

He told a large crowd of party supporters at Yenagoa his administration would end the mystery of the state if elected.

“If you vote for me and my team, that unfair day will surely end. Today, I am here to tell you that renewed hope is also here. I am not here to steal or eat your future but to help you realise it. Development and opportunity are here. Education is here. Good health is here. Security is here.

“We will reconstruct and maintain vital federal roadways such as the Mbiama-Yenegoa-Nembe-Brass highway. We will work with willing and capable private sector partners to build a comprehensive network of swamp bridges that connect swamp settlements with upland areas and the wider world.

“My government will make the safety and security of the people of this state its highest priority. We will take the necessary measures to address security challenges in the waterways by winning the fight against kidnapping, oil theft and piracy in the Niger Delta region.

“No innocent person should have to live in fear simply because they work hard and earn a little money. You should be able to enjoy your life and labour as you wish. No one has the right to steal that from you.

“We will deploy new technologies to protect the safety and security of law-abiding Bayelsans as well as the critical infrastructure in the state. The effects of environmental degradation and oil spillage will not be ignored,” Tinubu said.

The former governor of Lagos State said Bayelsa holds an important position in Nigeria, being one of the major suppliers of the nation’s wealth.

According to the APC candidate, not only is Bayelsa State blessed with mineral resources it is also blessed with notable individuals.

Tinubu said: “This state is home to proud and vibrant people. Although this is a small land mass, Bayelsa has been blessed with abundant human and natural resources.

“With that blessing, your state has been asked to carry a great and long national duty. You all have given so much to the development of this nation. Nigeria would not be Nigeria without your human and material contribution.

“On behalf of the entire nation, may I say thank you Bayelsa for all that you have done for Nigeria.

“You have played a critical and leading role in the development of our national economy.

“Now, I am a man of fair play. I believe a person, a state and even a nation should be repaid for the good and positive things they have done.

“It is high time that Bayelsa is duly acknowledged for its role in national development and even more fairly paid back in kind for that positive role.

“The entire world knows that Bayelsa is rich in oil and is among Nigeria’s largest producing states. The revenue from these things has been the backbone of government income and foreign exchange earnings.

“But what the world often forgets is that Bayelsa is more than just pipelines and oil installations. It is a community of decent and good people, proud of the culture and traditions, yet hopeful of what the future holds.

“You are fishermen and boat operators of great skill and reputation. You are farmers, businessmen, market women, teachers, students and professionals in all fields.

“To be frank, those who have governed the state have not done as they should. In the fiscal rankings of all the States, Bayelsa ranked 36th in 2020 and 2021. You have been sold short by those not interested in your welfare,” Tinubu said.

Minister of State for Petroleum Sylva said Tinubu is a friend of the Niger Delta people and “the only serious candidate in the presidential race.”

Our flag shall be a symbol. That truth and justice reign. In peace or battle honour’d. And this we count as gain, To hand on to our children. A banner without stain. O God of all creation. Grant this our one request. Help us to build a nation. Where no man is oppressed. And so with peace and plenty. Nigeria may be blessed.”

  • God allowed Nigeria get away with ‘stupid things’ – Obasanjo

God allowed Nigeria get away with ‘stupid things’ – Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has said Nigeria has got away with a lot of “stupid things” because of the love of God.

He said the country should blame itself for failing to use the resources given to it by God.

Obasanjo spoke during the official launch of The Letterman by the Editor-in-Chief of Premium Times, Musikilu Mojeed, on Thursday in Abuja.

The 492-page narrative non-fiction titled: The Letterman: Inside the ‘Secret’ Letters of former Nigerian President, Olusegun Obasanjo, x-rays the role of letter writing in leadership, governance and politics.

It focuses on the former president and his fondness for speaking bluntly to subordinates, superiors, associates and foreign personalities – through letters – not minding the reactions the letters might generate.

Obasanjo said: “I believe that God is a Nigerian. Bishop Kukah may not agree with me. Because God loves us so much that we have done so many stupid things and he allowed us to get away with these stupid things.

“I sincerely hope that God’s patience has no limit of elasticity because if he does, there will soon be a day that God will say: ‘No, I have heard enough.’ And if God says he has heard enough it doesn’t matter, Musikilu can write 20 books on Lettermen and Letter women, it won’t help us.

“I believe the right lessons must be learnt. We have all that we need to have. God has given us all that we need to have; that we are not doing what we should do. It is not God; we should blame ourselves.”

He lamented that the country had not lived up to expectation.

According to him, global leaders consulted with Nigeria before decisions were taken in Africa, wondering how the country fell from such lofty height.

He said: “We probably don’t appreciate what we have as a country and I believe if we do appreciate it, make good use of it, we will do better than we are now.

“I have sent for an interview with the only remaining member of what they call the 12 disciples in the foreign service; that’s the 12 Nigerians who first joined the foreign service before our independence, Amb Adefuye is the only remaining one.

“In that interview, he said that when Nigeria became independent it was a giant in the sun. That was the expectation; not a giant even in Africa. A giant in the sun. That was the expectation of the world about Nigeria.

“Have we lived up to it? No. If we have not, why haven’t we? And it is not so far to seek.

“Somebody talked about Jimmy Carter visiting Nigeria. Of course he did visit Nigeria but before he visited Nigeria we were struggling with America, something they call constructive engagement with South Africa. What can be constructive with apartheid?

‘’We said no we don’t accept that. Kessinger said he was coming to Nigeria three times and three times I said I will not receive him. You may say that’s madness. Yes, there is a touch of madness but you have to do what is right.

“There was this election coming. It was Ford and Jimmy Carter. If Ford won the election, I would have to do acrobatics. I would not be able to say America cannot come to Nigeria for four years. Before the election, we started looking for who was in the camp of Jimmy Carter and we found Andy Young before the election and when the election took place, Cater won.

“Within two weeks of him being sworn in, Andy Young came to us. We became very close with Andy Young to the extent that the Carter administration will not do anything in Africa without informing us. People ask me: how did we lose that? How did we lose it?”

Former President Goodluck Jonathan said Obasanjo will be remembered for debt forgiveness, the creation of anti-corruption agencies and international interventions across Africa.

Jonathan described the former president as a father-like figure.

Jonathan, who was represented by former Minister of Aviation, Osita Chidoka, said history will remember the former president for the great things he did, not the quarrels and the fights.

“Obasanjo is not as stupid as he looks,” Jonathan said.

He stated that there have been ample letters that have changed history.

The former President said Obasanjo’s letters created engagements within the political arena, diplomatic world and other sectors.

Jonathan commended the author for the work he has done in bringing the letters together in a single book.

The book reviewer, Bishop Matthew Kukah, said Obasanjo has made it hard for writers to write about him.

According to Kukah, Obasanjo developed an obsession with writing his own story.

He said the former President wrote everything about himself.

Kukah said it was hard to write about the former President because he has written about every part of his life.

The cleric said the former president elevated the act of letter writing to an art form.

He said the book covered 25 letters covering different issues.

The author said Obasanjo’s appearance at the event was a surprise as he did not acknowledge the letter that was written to invite him.

He said although many said the former President does not like journalists, he had maintained a decent relationship with him.

Mojeed described how Obasanjo sometimes got angry at questions he asked and interviews he conducted.

He said Obasanjo never gave him access to the letters.

He said it was completely unauthorised work.
