IITA DG bows out after 11 years, says Nigerians most hospitable in Africa

The Director General of International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) Ibadan, Dr Nteranya Sarginga, has described Nigerians as the most hospitable people in Africa.

He spoke as he bows out after 11 years of leading the largest agricultural research institute in Africa.

Sarginga, who is the first African to lead the institute, hails from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

He had served as a student researcher before returning as the first African DG in 2011.

While giving account of his stewardship to select reporters at the weekend, the outgoing chief executive called on African leaders to invest more in agriculture to feed Africans and lead in exportation of farm produce to strengthen economies and provide jobs.

Sarginga, who took over leadership in 2011, is famous for his ‘people first’ policy which saw the institute regain the trust of staff, a development that helped staff and other stakeholders give their best to the institute.

The policy has helped IITA regain its position as the leading agricultural research institute in Africa attracting new grants and projects across the world.

He said: “ When I became the 7th DG of IITA and started work on 1 November 2011, 1 used the People Strategy to inform the Business Strategy (IITA Refreshed Strategy 2012-2020) as the best approach to lead and develop the organization. Both strategies had to work together to enable the organization to deliver on its mission and mandate of transforming the agricultural agenda in Africa.

“Most staff in IITA and other organisations have asked me about my People Strategy. My answer has been that you will not find that in any annual report and probably not in any internal IITA document either. Yet we all agree that “people are the most important assets in any institution.” For me the people strategy is the link between the business strategy and the implications for human resources. It answers questions such as what are we good at, what capabilities do we need, and when and where do we need them? I spent a lot of time early in my administration to get answers to such questions from all categories of IITA staff at headquarters and hubs.”

To his credit, IITA successfully introduced the youth agripreneurship programme which opens up opportunities for youths in agriculture.

The programme makes youths see agriculture as a business instead of a punishment. They get trained by IITA and are supported with resources to succeed in agriculture business.

Through the programme, some selected public secondary schools have been renovated, and supplied technology laboratories to help young tots embrace technology in farming.

Sarginga also built partnerships to with local, national and international stakeholders to promote agriculture and agribusiness and financing.

Though he indicated interest in returning to his country of birth, DRC, Sarginga, who was installed as the Aare Afurugbin-ola of the Source by the Ooni of Ife Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi last year, said he still has a lot of work to do in Nigeria.

He commended the enormous hospitality he enjoyed in Nigeria, saying Nigerians are perhaps the most hospitable people in Africa.

Timi Frank seeks Jonathan’s intervention in PDP crisis

Former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Timi Frank, has urged ex-President Goodluck Jonathan to urgently intervene in the crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2023 general elections.

Frank, who made this plea in a statement in Abuja, also congratulated Jonathan on his 65th birthday anniversary.

He urged him to continue to play his role of mediation for the love of country.

He urged the former President to do all in his power to make PDP return to power in 2023 “to enable us continue with the trajectory of good governance.”

Frank, who is the United Liberation Movement for West Papua (ULMWP) Ambassador to East Africa and Middle East, described Jonathan as a visionary leader whose guidance and direction are truly inspirational and of tremendous blessing to all.

He insisted it has become imperative for Jonathan to urgently broker peace between the Presidential Candidate of the PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and the warring G-5 Governors led by Nyesom Wike, in order to stabilise the party and brighten its chances of winning the 2023 general elections.

The Bayelsa-born political activist said: “I want to use this opportunity once more, to apologise to you for the wrong position we took in 2015.

“We are sorry, we now know better. Nigerians are faced with so many economic woes and insecurity since 2015.

“I’d like to use this opportunity to implore you to find a place to forgive me personally and the entire country in general.

“The only way to show that forgiveness is by playing a role to finding a lasting solution to the challenges confronting the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the moment.

“This is coming against the background that you are seen as a father and a leader to the entire good people of Nigeria.

“Don’t look away when your house is burning. I recognise your statesmanship status and so many Nigerians support that position.

“However, as a father to the entire PDP family, on whose platform you had governed this country and the country which you left about seven years ago has come to be known as the poverty capital of the world.

“I employ you in the spirit of peace and the love of country to intervene and bring the warring factions together to ensure we coast to victory in order to salvage the country come next year.

“Kindly do all that is possible to make PDP return to power to enable us continue with the trajectory of good governance. PDP is the only party that can rescue and unify the country.

“You are a symbol of peace in Africa, let the role being continuously played by you in Africa reflect in Nigeria.

“Nigerians and I have made mistakes and we acknowledge the mistakes. Therefore, we plead with you to find a place in your heart to forgive and forget as life is not devoid of mistakes.

“Our great leader, the symbol of peace in Nigeria in particular and Africa in general, find a place to forgive us all as you celebrate your birthday today.

“Once more, a very big congratulations to you and the entire family. We pray the good Lord will continue to bless and strengthen you in all you do in Jesus’ name. Amen.”

  • Jonathan’s men back Tinubu for presidency

Jonathan’s men back Tinubu for presidency

Major supporters and kinsmen of former President Goodluck Jonathan at the weekend threw their weight behind the presidential standard bearer of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The supporters and kinsmen under the auspices of Citizens Network For Peace and Development in Nigeria (CNPDN), at a briefing in Abuja said since Jonathan failed to join the 2023 presidential race despite their persistent prodding, the right thing to do was to support Tinubu, who they said, has the structures and capacity to win the elections, apart from being a southerner.

CNPDN was among the first Southern Coalition to openly call on former President Jonathan to run for office on the platform of the APC.

The Coalition had also involved prominent Southern leaders to prevail on Jonathan to throw his hat in the ring.

The ex-President, who promised to consult widely, declined participation in the race at the last minute before Tinubu won the presidential primary election of the APC.

The National secretary of the Coalition, Mr. Francis Okereke Wainwei, from Bayelsa State, told reporters at the briefing in Abuja that as patriotic citizens, they can’t sit back and not participate in the electoral process of the country.

Wainwei said: “As patriotic citizens under the auspices of the Citizens Network For Peace and Development in Nigeria, we took it up as a burning need for us to be actively involved in the process leading to the election of Nigeria’s next president, who shall be taking over from President Muhammadu Buhari next year.

“We consider it as very important and necessary because Nigeria needs a truly visionary, competent and detribalized leader to enthrone a more united, peaceful and prosperous nation.

“As patriotic citizens we feel obliged to take some proactive measures to ensure that the right president is elected, come 2023 by providing proper information and guidance that will enable the electorate elect the right candidate as president.

“We therefore, took it upon ourselves to do thorough investigations, opinion sampling and interviewing of major stakeholders from across the country to know the exact mood of the nation, to enable the electorate make the right choice for the 2023 presidential election.

“We also took into consideration the declarations of both the APC Northern Governors’ forum and that of the Southern Nigeria Governors’ forum ,with respect to which part of the country that should produce the next president in 2023.

“The both groups declared that power should shift to Southern Nigeria for the purpose of promoting equity, justice and fairness ,which they argued would strengthen the unity of the country.

“After a forensic analysis of the declarations and opinions of various groups and stakeholders across the country, we also came to the conclusion that for the peace, unity and progress of this country, a competent and experienced presidential candidate from Southern Nigeria be elected as president, come 2023.

“This is to strengthen the fragile unity we are experiencing at the moment, as a nation. It will appease some groups and individuals agitating against the political domination of others by any one part of the country.

“We went further to examine the capacity, competence, political experience and nation-wide acceptability of the presidential candidates from Southern Nigeria ,and we discovered that Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress tops the other candidates.

“We hereby declare our total support for Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the APC Presidential candidate, as our preferred candidate for the office of President, Federal Republic of Nigeria, come 2023.

“We are therefore, using this medium to also call on all patriotic Nigerians to support and vote massively for Bola Ahmed Tinubu as president in the 2023 presidential election ,as that is the best interest for Nigeria at the moment.

“Our choice of Bola Tinubu is strongly premised on his wealth of political experience, intellectual sagacity, a knack for identifying and recruiting competent people and the capacity to mobilize human and material resources for the accelerated and holistic development of the country.

“We believe strongly that the next president of this country should be someone who firmly believes in the philosophy of “building the people ,to build the nation “; he should be a people-oriented president.

“Tinubu fits perfectly for the kind of president Nigeria needs in the next dispensation He has the capacity and the wealth of political experience to re-enact the Lagos State magic in both the economic and political stability of this country. He is a national patriot and a detribalized leader that has the visionary mindset to build a prosperous, strong, peaceful and united Nigeria.”
