The commission noted that with the upgrade, the former College of Education would now be called University of Ilesa, making it 220th university in Nigeria.
The Commission said the approval was a sequel to the request by the State Government for the upgrade and their ability to meet the criteria for the establishment of new university or upgrade of existing institution.
Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission, Prof. Abubakar Rasheed, handed over the provisional license of the new institution to Governor Adegboyega Oyetola at NUC headquarters in Abuja, on Thursday.
Prof Rasheed congratulated the State government for the success and encouraged the management of the new university to approach the Commission for any professional or institutional support so that it won’t operate contrary to established guidelines which might attract severe sanctions.
He said the application was expedited because of the promise NUC had earlier made to the state during the dissolution of “marriage” it had with Oyo State regarding the ownership and management of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomosho, Oyo State.
The NUC boss, however, confirmed that the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) and Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) have been notified of the new university, and have also been directed to recognise the institution in its subsequent operations.
Oyetola explained that the decision to upgrade the institution to a full-fledged University was taken on 31 March, 2022, and was necessitated by the massive gap between qualified candidates and available space in existing higher institutions within the state.

Dragun, well-known online for content about her transition, beauty and style, was locked up after staff at The Goodtime Hotel called police to report a person being ‘extremely disorderly’ and ‘causing a disturbance.’
Staff at the Miami hotel said Dragun had been walking around the pool area naked and when officers arrived she doused them with water. She was arrested and charged with felony battery of a police officer.
The 26-year-old transgender was sent to the men’s unit at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in Miami before being released without bail on Wednesday.
Representatives for the influencer said her imprisonment in the men’s unit was ‘extremely disturbing and dangerous.’
They voiced their grievances about the imprisonment decision in a statement. “The situation with Nikita, who is legally female, being placed in a men’s unit of a Florida jail is extremely disturbing and dangerous.

Operatives of the Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT) have arrested a cab driver and three other members of a syndicate over the alleged kidnap of a woman in Port Harcourt City (PHC).
The suspects allegedly kidnapped one Hussena Adamu, wife of a businessman, Alhaji Musa Ahmad based in Rivers State on March 31, near Casablanca Club GRA Port Harcourt at gunpoint.
They were said to have held the woman hostage for seven days at their den in Bori, Khana Local Government Area (LGA) until her husband paid N20m to secure her release.
The suspects identified as Isiaka Hamidu, 30, Nwasaneo Goodluck, 34, Victor Nwidee, 29, and the driver, ThankGod Bariledun, 36, were arrested following credible information received by the DCP Tunji Disu led IRT.
The Nation gathered that Isiaka, a native of Adamawa State like the victim, masterminded her kidnapping over his annoyance with her husband.
Isiaka, it was gathered, told detectives that he was angry with the businessman because his brother who served him for 11 years was only settled with N250,000 earlier this year when his brother decided to get married.
The suspect said kidnapping the businessman’s wife was a way to get revenge on him, adding that he traced the woman, got all relevant information and contacted Goodluck who reached out to other members of the gang for the operation.
He said a notorious kidnapper, Ojukwu organized and led the operation and that he (Isiaka) received N1.3m from the N20m ransom that was paid by the woman’s husband.
Goodluck, a National Diploma holder, told the police that Ojukwu gave him N5.5 million from the ransom to share with the three others, adding that he took N2million, gave Bariledun N2million, Isiaka N1.3 million and N500,000 to Nwidee.
He said Ojukwu invited other members of his gang for a successful operation, adding that the woman was kidnapped while doing school runs.
The driver, Bariledun, claimed he never knew it was kidnapping, adding that they engaged his services, used his vehicle to stop the woman before they kidnapped and moved her into a commercial vehicle.
The driver said his vehicle was also used to move the woman to the den at Bori.
Nwidee said his role was to monitor the movement of the woman and report to the gang, insisting he never knew any other member of the syndicate before the incident.
He admitted to receiving N500,000 as his share and used the money to buy a Toyota Corolla car which has been recovered by the police alongside a mini bus and the Toyota Avensis used for taxi by Bariledun.
Sources said the police are on the trail of the gang leader alleged to be on the wanted list of the police for leading a vicious cult group, Dem-Bam, notorious for killing and maiming people in the area.
