Jubilation in Niger Delta as FG rescinds decision to terminate PAP

There is jubilation in the Niger Delta following the decision of the Federal Government to rescind its plans to terminate the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP).

The Interim Administrator, PAP, Maj-Gen Barry Ndiomu (retd), confirmed the government’s new position at the weekend.

Ndiomu, in statement by PAP’s Media Consultant, Donu Kogbara, expressed gratitude towards the Federal Government for listening when he made it clear that critical stakeholders across the region were strongly opposed to the winding down of the PAP.

The PAP boss added that all responsible stakeholders nevertheless support change and share his view that the programme needs to be totally refocused and restructured.

Ndiomu said the government weighed the arguments presented to them, based on their merits, and decided to suspend the planned shutdown.

Ndiomu said the Federal Government’s willingness to retrace its steps demonstrated the sensitivity of the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration to issues affecting the Niger Delta.

Wolves appoint Lopetegui as new manager

Wolves have confirm the appointment of Julen Lopetegui as the new head coach

The club’s long search for a new head coach is finally set to end as the former Spain and Real Madrid boss prepares to take over at Molineux.

Lopetegui will not begin in his new role until after the Arsenal fixture on November 12, meaning he will not take charge of any games before the World Cup break.

Interim head coach Steve Davis will take charge of the team for the home Premier League clashes with Brighton and Arsenal, as well as the Carabao Cup fixture with Leeds at Molineux.

After sacking Bruno Lage on October 2, Wolves moved to appoint Lopetegui, as executive chairman Jeff Shi flew to Spain to hold talks with the 56-year-old. Wolves were rebuffed when the Spaniard reluctantly turned down the job to look after his elderly father.

That marked the second time Lopetegui had turned down Wolves. In 2016 he was due to be Fosun’s first appointment as head coach but he rejected the role at the final moment in favour of taking the Spain national team job.

Now, it is third time lucky for Shi and Wolves as they are set to finally land their man.

Wolves were respectful and cautious with Lopetegui’s family situation and it is understood he initiated talks himself late last week and negotiations have advanced swiftly.

The news brings to an end a managerial search that has lasted almost five weeks.

In that time, Wolves also considered a move for former boss Nuno Espirito Santo, as talks were held with his representatives. In the end, they decided not to pursue him.

Having interviewed several candidates, their attentions then turned to Michael Beale, but the QPR manager changed his mind at the last minute to stay at the London club. Wolves then announced they would stick with Davis until 2023, but that quickly changed once Lopetegui became available again.

Meanwhile, Wolves are set to enjoy a warm weather training camp in Spain during the World Cup.

The players not playing for their countries will initially have some time off before they jet off for a week, where they are expected to play some friendly games.

The final details are yet to be finalised and the new head coach is expected to have an input before they are completed.

    Experts meet to tackle counterfeiting

African countries are reportedly targeted destinations for counterfeit goods such as pharmaceuticals, foods, and beverages. With the mind of curbing it experts converged in Lagos to tackle the issues of counterfeiting in Nigeria.

The two-day consultative roundtable had as special guest the Minister of Industry Trade and Investment, Otunba Adeniyi Adebayo.

According to him, the fight against counterfeiting requires all hands on deck.

The hybrid event covered counterfeiting and piracy in various industries, that include the film industry, pharmaceuticals, alcohol trade, and agriculture.

Counterfeit products, experts say, can be life threatening, as a result, the Intellectual Property Rights and Innovation Project in Africa (AfrIPI) put together the Consultative Roundtable on Counterfeiting in Nigeria for stakeholders to exchange knowledge, ideas and experience on the socio-economic implications of counterfeiting and IPR infringement. Intellectual property rights (‘IPRs’ or ‘IP rights’) are legally enforceable rights over the use of inventions or other creative works.

By striking the right balance between the interests of innovators and the wider public interest, the experts say, the IP system aims to foster an environment in which creativity and innovation can flourish.’

The IPR Expert, AfrIPI, Nancy Samuriwo, said: “The consultative roundtable was used to raise awareness of the dangers of counterfeiting and piracy and increase respect for intellectual property rights; was a platform for international experts to discuss trends, challenges, and best practice in IPR enforcement to curb counterfeiting.

Chief Stella Ezenduka (Trademarks, Patents & Designs Registry, Commercial Law Department), who represented the Minister was of the view that the roundtable is a step in the right direction, “if we must curb the menace”.

Some of the key stakeholders who were in attendance at the roundtable, included the Delegation of the European Union to the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Economic Community of West African States, the Nigerian Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, the World Intellectual Property Organization (Nigeria Office), the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, the National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), the Standards Organisation of Nigeria, INTERPOL and Africa International Trade and Commerce Research.
