Chris Kabba’s family demands suspension of Met officers involved in shooting

The family of Chris Kaba has called for the immediate suspension of the Metropolitan police officer involved in his fatal shooting.

The 24-year-old, who was due to become a father for the first time, was shot dead by a firearms officer in Streatham, south London, on Monday night.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has since launched a homicide investigation into his death, yet the Met is yet to confirm if any of those involved have been disciplined.

On Saturday, thousands of protesters marched through Whitehall demanding justice for Kaba.

Members of Kaba’s family were joined by supporters carrying placards proclaiming “justice for Chris Kaba”, “abolish the Met” and “no justice, no peace”.

Protesters gathered in Parliament Square from midday before marching along Whitehall and then on to Scotland Yard.

Kaba was driving an Audi, which was reportedly rammed and boxed in by police on Monday night. He was said to have been killed by a single shot fired through the driver’s side of the windscreen of the car.

His family has called for the officer who fired the shot to face suspension. In a statement released before the demonstration, Kaba’s family asked the police watchdog to conclude its investigation within “weeks or months, not years”.

It added that restoring public confidence in the justice system required the IOPC to make decisions on “a timescale that delivers justice to all concerned”.

A statement read: “On being notified of the death of Chris Kaba, the IOPC should have immediately opened a homicide and disciplinary investigation. The family was shocked to learn on Wednesday 7 September that the IOPC had still not done so, and demanded a change of heart without delay.

“The family now await the outcome of that investigation, but seek a charging decision in this case in weeks or a few months, not years. Public confidence in the police and our justice system requires the IOPC and CPS to find a way to make decisions in this case on a timescale that delivers justice to all concerned. Avoidable delay is unacceptable.

“In the meantime, the family demands that the commissioner of police of the metropolis immediately suspend the firearms officer, pending the outcome of the investigation.”

Outside Scotland Yard on Saturday, Kaba’s sobbing mother and relatives sat at the front of the crowd facing the Metropolitan police headquarters. Speeches were made through speakers on the back of a flatbed truck – in defiance of new laws giving police the power to ban loud protests. Drummers played a slow Jamaican nyabinghi rhythm through the rally.

After the opening of the IOPC homicide investigation, the family has also demanded the Met release video from body-worn cameras from the officers showing the moment that they shot him.

The rapper Stormzy was among those to address the crowd, calling on people to “have stamina” in the campaign for justice.

“What they have done is they’ve killed someone. They killed someone, do you know what I mean? … so I just encourage everyone here today to have stamina,” he said.

Stafford Scott, the rights campaigner from Tottenham, north London, said: “This ain’t no fight to prove unlawful killing or lawful killing, as the system tries to tell us. Today this is us proclaiming what we know to be true: they killed that young man.”

Scott compared the case of Kaba to that of Mark Duggan, shot dead by the Met in Tottenham in 2011. “No matter what they did they had no chance of surviving,” he said. “Within seconds they were executed by racist police who have a strategy of oppressing black people.”

Speaking at the protest, Bell Ribeiro-Addy, the MP for Lambeth, the constituency where the shooting occurred, demanded more answers for the grieving family, including the body-cam footage of the officers.

Diane Abbott, the MP for Hackney North, told demonstrators: “I don’t know how I would feel if it was my own son killed in cold blood.

“[Chris] is not the only black man gunned down by the Metropolitan police.”

Lester Holloway, the editor of UK black newspaper the Voice, said: “I’ve had a lifetime of going on these marches. The struggle for justice seems never-ending. But we need to, as a community, keep the pressure on, because otherwise there will be no change.”

Temi Mwale, founder of Tottenham rights group the 4Front project, led chants on the March. “If you are black or white we are here because the police killed another unarmed black man in this country.”

Destinie Sanchez, 18, from south London, said: “State racism has existed for years and years. Britain is racist to its core … We can bring up all the stop and search stats, all the exclusions of boys specifically in schools and it shows Britain is racist.

“Three months ago, Child Q was strip-searched. That was disgusting. How many times have we got to come on these streets to fight back?”

Another protester, a musician known as B Yaks from Islington, north London, said: “I’m here to stand in solidarity with a fellow young black male who’s been killed with impunity yet again. It is a reminder of sharp, short institutional racism, especially in the police force.”

They [the police] need to protect us more,” said 24-year-old Nikki from south London. “This isn’t the first time it’s happened. There needs to be a change because they can’t deal with people like that.”

Catherine, also from south London, attended the march with her 20-month-old child. She said: “This is a person who has been killed by somebody who is meant to be protecting us. I felt I needed to be here to show some solidarity. It’s not really been in the news at all.”

  • Wike says vote of confidence won’t save Ayu, mocks Secondus

Wike says vote of confidence won’t save Ayu, mocks Secondus

Rivers Governor Nyesom Wike has said the recent vote of confidence passed in the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Iyorchia Ayu by members of the National Executive Council (NEC) of the party will not save him.

The Governor mocked the ousted National Chairman of the party, Prince Uche Secondus, for reportedly jubilating over the NEC’s decision and reminded him that a similar vote of confidence did not save him.

Wike insisted that the NEC’s position would not dissuade him and others from insisting that the prevailing structural imbalance within the party must be addressed.

The Governor spoke at the 11th Hour homecoming and reception organised on Saturday in Port Harcourt for defectors from various political parties, who recently joined the PDP in Rivers.

Wike said: “I was listening and watching, they said there is one man they call Secondus. They said he was dancing, celebrating that NEC gave their person vote of confidence.

“He forgets history. Ask him the same NEC through Aliyu Babangida moved a motion of vote of confidence supported by the same person, Ndudi Elumelu. They gave you (Secondus) a vote of confidence, what happened? You left office.

“We don’t fight and go back. If you like you can have as many 20 votes of confidence, it’s not my business. My business is to make sure the right thing is done, and the right thing must be done. Whether today or tomorrow.”

Wike said despite the heightening political aligning and negotiations that were going on, his administration had not abandoned governance in the State.

The Governor explained that it was the love that he had for the State that has made him to remain devoted to providing good governance until the last day of his tenure.

He said: “I’m not going to play party with the interest of my people. Rivers State is paramount to me first before any other person or group.

“So, the eyes can see what we have done. Up till today, we have never abandoned governance. So many people are already rounding up, taking the last they have but yet, we are still committed in commissioning, and flagging off projects.

“Because of the love we have for our people, we will continue to serve you till May 29, when by the grace of God, Siminialaye Fubara will be inaugurated the governor of Rivers State.”

Wike commended the defectors for their courage to rejoin their political family saying there was no other political party that could win election in Rivers except the PDP.

He said: “PDP is a household name in Rivers State. Let me assure you that we will all work with you. Nothing like somebody who has been there since and somebody who has just come back. The more the merrier.

“So, all of us must put hands together to make sure our governorship candidate, the National Assembly candidates, the House of Assembly candidates, at least from Rivers State, we return them 100 percent. That’s our primary duty.”

The Governor dismissed efforts by other political candidates as mere attempt to appear on the ballot because there was no hope of winning for them.

Wike said: “If God gives you the ticket of PDP in this State, go home and sew your cloth for the inauguration day.

Read Also: PDP crisis: Ayu, not Jibrin, should resign, says Wike

“Because, what will any Rivers man or woman be saying that he or she wants to vote for any other person in Rivers State. As a party, we have kept faith with our people. As a party we have stood for our people. As a party, we have never allowed intimidation from any quarter and that is what we are talking about the interest of Rivers State.

“Remember, before I came on board, one state had our property with them. As I came in as governor, with support and prayer of our people we took all our property back.”

Wike said a new strategy would be adopted for the coming political season to replace “political big men” with people at the grassroots.

According to him, those who are domicile with their people will be utilised to deliver their units and wards during the general elections.

Rivers PDP Chairman of Amb. Desmond Akawor said the party was presenting a certificate to acknowledge excellent performance of governor Wike because he had surpassed their expectations.

Akawor said that the defectors from the other political parties had witnessed the unequal transformational performance of Wike in office.

He listed the establishment of the Nabo Graham Douglas campus of Nigerian Law School in the State, the Real Madrid Academy and Dr. Peter Odili Cancer and Cardiovascular Diseases Diagnostics and Treatment Centre among other reputable projects for the reasons why the defectors had returned to the PDP.

Speaking on behalf of defectors from Rivers South East Senatorial District, a former member of All Progressives Congress (APC) Board of Trustees, Dr. Sam Sam Jaja said they had a regrettable unsuccessful political expedition while in their former parties, but had retraced their steps back to the PDP on self volition.

Jaja described Wike as a compassionate, loving and graceful leader, who was created to do good for the people.

He pledged their 100 per cent loyalty and stated that they would join the PDP to uplift the oppressed, reengineer the new phase of transformation of the state and help the needy to grow.

On behalf of defectors from Rivers East Senatorial District, Princewill Dike said he was a sad man while he served as chief propagandist for the APC because the numerous developmental strides of Wike were too visible to be a lie.
