Customs seizes explosive-making chemical, military wares in Ogun

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Federal Operations Unit (FOU), Zone A, Ikeja, Lagos, said it has intercepted 20 drums of Calcium Carbide smuggled into the country from neighboring countries.

Addressing reporters, the acting Customs Area Controller, of the Zone, Hussein Ejibunu, said the drums were intercepted in Ogun State.

He stated that 41 pieces of military camouflage bags were also intercepted.

According to him, calcium carbide is highly inflammable as it can be used to manufacture Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and could cause danger to life and property.

He stated further that the carbide is controlled and must come with an end-users certificate from the office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) before it can be allowed into the country.

According to him: “20 drums of Calcium Carbide were seized in Ogun State. It is instructive to emphasise that such importation raises concerns of national security. This is because it is a chemical used in the manufacture of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and could cause danger to life and property.

“Allowing things like this chemical into the society uncontrollably could create serious security challenges for the country because carbide is highly flammable, reactive and can cause explosion hazards when mixed with other chemicals and exposed to water or moisture. It forms flammable acetylene gas that could be used to endanger lives by lawless persons.”

The Customs chief added that the unit intercepted nine trucks load of foreign parboiled rice, 56,725 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), also known as Petrol, among others worth over N579million

Buni to replace late Commissioner with son

Less than 40 days after the death of former Yobe Commissioner of Youth and Sports, Goni Bukar Lawan, there has been intense lobbying by politicians over his replacement.

The Nation exclusively gathered most of the stakeholders from the Local Government are disposed to the appointment of the eldest son of the late commissioner, Kachalla Goni Bukar as his replacement.

But some close allies of the late commissioner are not in support of the arrangement.

A source close to Governor Mai Mala Buni confirmed he is set to appoint Kachalla, the eldest son to replace his father.

“I am reliably aware that the governor is just waiting for the 40 days’ prayer rites before the announcement of who will replace BUGON and Bursari Local Government at the State Executive Council.

“What I am also aware of is that the Governor is under pressure over the appointment because many people are trying to scuttle the appointment of the son but I think the governor has made up his mind to make the son a commissioner to replace his father,” the source informed.

Another source added: “The stakeholders in the area have agreed to meet and inform the Governor that the only way to stabilise the politics in that area is to appoint BUGON’s son as the commissioner and no one else”.

The Nation also learnt that those against the appointment of BUGON’s son are spreading the gospel that the boy is too small to become commissioner.

The Nation checks reveal that Kachalla, who is a civil servant with the Yobe Government was born in 1992.

He holds a Bsc in Political Science from the University of Maiduguri.

The Nation recalls it may not be the first time if Kachalla’s appointment as Commissioner to replace his father comes through.

Yobe Deputy Speaker, Auwulu Bello Isa Danchua took over his late father’s position in 2006.

The Minister of Power, Engr. Abubakar Aliyu, was also appointed Deputy Governor following the death of his brother, Senator Mamman Ali in Florida, USA in January 2009.

The Nation reports Lawan died early August in an accident on his way to Abuja via Kano.

He was buried the following day in Damaturu, the State capital.

Biggie scolds Sheggz with tail of house task

Sheggz has received the stick as the Tail of House for week seven.

After handling his punishment poorly as last week’s Tail of House, Sheggz gets to keep the title for one more week.

Sheggz emerged as this week’s Tail of House for failing to serve his punishment: dressing up in clown costumes and allowing the Level Up housemates to decorate and paint his face.

Sheggz previously occupied his current title with Allysyn, who embodied her role as a clown perfectly throughout the week, resulting in getting pardoned by Biggie.

As the Tail of House this week, Sheggz was asked to drop his previous costume given a new uniform, an apron that reads: “here to serve.”

He already started his task by massaging Bella’s feet while they were gisting in the Living Room. This could well be a normal day in the Shella ship, but it was an act of service either way.

On Day 45, Sheggz was seen in his green apron with a matching bucket hat, making breakfast in the Kitchen with Rachel and Bella waiting for food in anticipation. Bella kept him company now and again, then moved to the Table to have a conversation with Chichi.

Police weak, unprepared in criminal investigations -Katsina Judge

The Chief Judge of Katsina State Justice Musa Danladi Abubakar has described the police as weak and unprepared in investigating criminal cases before charging them to court.

He said such delays result in the quick release of the criminals before their proper trials in court.

Abubakar spoke in a media chat with The Nation in his office on Tuesday.

He blamed police for the release of bandits undergoing trials, insisting the courts have no fault at all.

According to him: ”It’s not the court that is releasing the bandits but because no credible evidence from the police is brought forward before the courts’’,
‘’Police don’t do their homework, they don’t come ready when they come to court unlike other agencies like EFCC, ICPC, who when they come to courts, they come ready, prepared and have all their evidence with their investigations completed.

‘’The Police don’t have the resources, they have something inherent in them, they lack personnel and where they do have, they misplace priority. They treat every criminal case the same with arrest and detention. This is the quagmire we are in’’.

He added: ”In the last three months, the Ministry of Justice has cleared over 300 cases and advised the police to either prosecute or discharge the suspects because there’s no credible evidence against them’’.

The Chief Judge expressed worries over the challenges confronting the judicial system in Katsina, especially the congestion of correctional facilities, the inability of the judicial arm to prosecute convicts and delay tactics by suspects.
He also attributed the frequent release of convicts on bails to their length of incarceration for several years with the files containing the nature of their crimes and locations not traced while they found their way to the prisons

He said: ’’The courts work on evidence. If there’s evidence which is doubtful or there is no evidence at all, the court will discharge them because it’s the law that said so.

‘’In the past, the system was working very well. The offences were not as grievous as they were today, there is a population explosion while the facilities in the justice sector remain the same.”
