Army denies aiding herdsmen, bandits in Southeast, Benue

The Army has dismissed allegations that it is colluding with killer herdsmen and bandits to terrorise the Southeast and Benue State.

It described the claim by a Civil Society Organisation (CSO), the International Society for Civil Liberty and Rule of Law (Intersociety), as spurious, libellous and derogatory.

The Army in a statement by the Director of Army Public Relations, Brigadier-General Onyema Nwachukwu, however, accepted the possibility of “black sheep” in its ranks.

“The Nigerian Army is not by this reaction denying the presence of black sheep in its fold, just like in any other organization or institution. This, the Army is very mindful of and actively monitoring and effectively handling within the provisions of extant laws”, the statement said

It claimed that Intersociety is sponsored by the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and Eastern Security Network (ESN) to destabilise the nation.

The statement reads: “The attention of the Nigerian Army (NA) has been drawn to a libellous, spurious and derogatory narrative credited to one so-called International Society for Civil Liberty and Rule of Law (Intersociety), alleging that the Nigerian military, especially the NA is working with armed herdsmen/bandits to terrorise the Eastern part of the country and Benue state.

“A cursory look at the content reveals a business-as-usual pattern of propaganda by the well-known, paid jobbers and fifth columnists christened INTERSOCIETY, who after several failed attempts, still unrepentantly and shamelessly continues to dissipate its energy in mudslinging, all in a futile effort to drag the image and reputation of the NA in the mud, while promoting irredentists, lawless and outlawed organizations.

“Unfortunately for these mischief makers, the highly patriotic and untiring efforts of the Nigerian Army to neutrally defend the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Nigeria is visible enough and boldly seen by all and have received international accolades”.

It continued, “it is on this unmistakable pedigree, that the NA wishes to dismiss these concoctions and evil propaganda peddled and served to unsuspecting members of the public by INTERSOCIETY, covertly sponsored by IPOB/ESN, with the singular purpose of destabilising our dear nation.

“It is on record, that the NA conducted and will still conduct series of exercises not only in the South Eastern states but across all the states of the Federation, which has reasonably reduced criminality, especially in the South East, where Intersociety’s cohorts like IPOB and ESN could no longer enjoy the freedom of action to unleash death and mayhem on Ndigbo and other Nigerians, who do not support their evil bid.

“Intersociety’s unprofessional posture is crystal clear and evident in its biased and unbalanced submissions and reportage, as it has never openly condemned the atrocious activities of IPOB/ ESN, for which it is fronting.

“InterSociety would rather turn a blind eye, when these groups illegally deny law-abiding citizens their rights to freedom of movement and association through their illegal sit-at-home order, the attack on military, police, paramilitary personnel and other security agencies, the attack and callous beheading of Nigerians including Ndigbo, the destruction of government facilities and infrastructure, amongst myriads of other nefarious activities.

“However, the NA through the conduct of exercises such as PYTHON DANCE, GOLDEN DAWN, ENDURING PEACE AND STILL WATERS has effectively checkmated and drastically reduced their criminal activities and other sundry crimes in South Eastern Nigeria, while alongside the exercises, fostering excellent Civil-Military Relations through series of Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) activities heralding the conduct of these exercises”.

Why work on Eastern rail line was suspended – FG

The Federal Government on Saturday explained why China Civil Engineering and Construction Company (CCEC), suspended work on the eastern rail line.

It said the contractor was compelled to pause work along the corridor due to insecurity and vandalisation of rail infrastructure.

Minister of Transportation, Mu’azu Jaji Sambo disclosed this during an inspection tour of the project in Port Harcourt.

He said CCEC complained of attacks on its workers along the Abia State axis.

This was contained in a statement in Abuja by the Director of Press and PR of the ministry, Wric Ojiekwe

Sambo, while lamenting the attacks, called on the media and the judiciary to collaborate with the ministry to expose and prosecute the perpetrators.

He noed that their prosecution would serve as deterrent to others.

The minister also described as fake news claims that funds meant for the Eastern rail line has been diverted to other projects.

He said: “It was fake news because the progress made so far on the project is from the 15 per cent of the counterpart funding by Nigeria while the 85 per cent to be provided by foreign parterners is still negotiated.

“While this tragedy will certainly take its toll on us in the number of lost human lives that can never be regained and lost properties that may never be fully replenished, this moment calls on us to be strong and courageous to help the victims through this dark period.

“We stand with you and the good people of Jigawa State at this troubling time. • Nigeria makes N14bn from cashew export

Nigeria makes N14bn from cashew export

Nigeria earned N14 billion from exporting raw cashew in the last one year, the National Cashew Association of Nigeria (NCAN), has said.

The association noted that the earnings could be higher if the Federal Government and subnational levels invested in the sector and supported local processing of cashew.

NCAN National President, Prince Ojo Ajanaku, stated this during a chat with reporters ahead of the 16th edition of the Cashew Conference this month.

He said: “We hope to grow to over a million metric tonnes in the next four or five years. Nigeria is presently doing more of export of raw cashew nuts because we don’t process more of it. It is generally a problem in Africa, not only in Nigeria.

“We are not processing, but we are exporting raw cashew nuts, which gives us a lot of income when we talk about foreign earnings. This is second to sesame seed, when you talk about foreign earning generations. We got about 14 billion naira in export. We only had challenges in exporting during the time of Apapa gridlock.”

While lamenting the lack of investment in the sector, Ajanaku noted that about 400 jobs are lost in the country, with every one thousand metric tonnes of cashew exported to India, Vietnam and other Asian countries.

Ajanaku said the sector has the capacity to produce over one million metric tonnes in the next five years if the government and organisations can invest in the sector.

He said: “This is happening in Nigeria for the first time. This is the 16th edition. We want to harmonise the cashew sector and use the conference to influence policies. Though the government is trying its best to support the cashew sector in Nigeria, we need to ask for more, because we have the potential to produce more than what we are producing at the moment.

“Though the statistics we have cannot be said to be accurate, we are presently producing about 350,000 metric tonnes of cashew per annum. However, with the cooperation we have gotten from ministries, departments and agencies, for the seedlings we have distributed for the past years, we are believing that in the coming harvest, we will be meeting over 400, 000 metric tonnes.”

Managing Director of African Cashew Alliance, Ernest Mintah, said the conference will enable producers to sensitise the sector and attract more investment and create job opportunities for Nigerians.

According to Mintah, Africa produces about 57 per cent of the total world production of cashew and process about 10 per cent of it while while the largest volume goes to Vietnam and India.

Mintah said: “Since 2006, we have had the alliance existing in different countries where cashew is produced. Currently, the alliance is in about 14 countries. The conference will open ways for producers to expand in the sector.

“About five years ago, only five per cent of cashew was processed in Africa. Today, we are somewhere around 10 per cent. It is still too little. What it means is that we are exporting a lot of jobs to Asia, particularly India and Vietnam, where the crop is being sent.

“So, we want to be able to sensitize the sector here and attract more investment so that more of the cashew being produced will remain here, processed here and a lot of jobs will be created.

“Today, Africa produces about 57 per cent of the total world production of cashew, yet we process about 10 per cent of it, while the largest volume is going to Vietnam and India.

“If we are exporting the primary product, we are getting something in the region of about one dollar 20 cents per kg. That will cover the payment of the farmer and also cover the transportation, exportation and the rest.

“But if we process, we stand the opportunity of getting over three times the revenue accruing to the government. We have three times that revenue accruing to the country where it is produced. We are also creating jobs. Every thousand metric tonnes of cashew that is processed, you can employ about 250 to 400 jobs, depending on the type of technology that is being used. So, we have been losing about 300 jobs exporting cashew, when we can process here.

“For instance, the Benin Republic has taken the decision to not allow any cashew exported in the country from 2024 onwards, so that they can retain jobs in the country.

“We want to sensitise the government in the different countries, especially Nigeria, to support the sector, increase the processing and create jobs for the youth and we expect other countries to do the same.

“We also want to dispel some negative notions about how difficult it is to invest in Nigeria. In spite of what you hear out there, Nigeria is ready for investment. The crop is here, the production is here.

“We will also visit factories in Nigeria so that people will get to know how the factories are set up and investment opportunities. They won’t just come here to listen to people talk, but will go into the field to see cashew production. It will then convince them to invest

  • 2023: ADC suspends Presidential candidate Kachikwu

2023: ADC suspends Presidential candidate Kachikwu

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) Saturday said it had suspended its 2023 presidential candidate, Dumebi Kachikwu, for alleged anti-party activities.

The party announced Kachikwu’s suspension in a statement by its Deputy National Chairman (Politics), Bamidele Ajadi.

The statement accused the flagbearer of making “defamatory” statements in a video that contravened ADC values and other anti-party activities.

It said the decision on Kachikwu’s suspension was taken on Friday at an emergency National Working Committee (NWC) meeting at an undisclosed location.

The party claimed that its 2023 presidential flagbearer’s behaviour “smacks of crass irresponsibility, gross indiscipline, disingenuous scandalization and blackmail, and completely unfit of someone who wants to be President of Nigeria.”

“The NWC viewed with great concern the baseless and defamatory video made, published and circulated by Mr Dumebi Kachikwu, which was intended to disparage and impugn the integrity and image of a peaceful and transformation-oriented African Democratic Congress and its national officers,” Mr Ajadi wrote in the statement.

According to him, Kachikwu’s speech in the said video contravened the principles and values upon which ADC is founded and the specific provision of Article 16 of the ADC Constitution to wit: “Act(s) conduct or utterances likely to bring the party into hatred, contempt or ridicule; engaging in dishonest practices, defrauding the party, its members or officials; engaging in anti-party activities; unauthorized publicity of Party dispute or

Ajadi added that there had been several actions, publications and utterances in the past aimed at maligning the ADC national officers, which the NWC chose to ignore, for peace to reign.

“The NWC also noted that since the 9th of June 2022 when he was elected the presidential candidate, he has failed, neglected and/or refused to share with the party, any meaningful, constructive or reasonable Presidential Campaign Roadmap for the forthcoming presidential election,” Ajadi said.
