Ofem is one of the six members in the 24-member legislature that remained inthe PDP when 18 others followed the governor to decamp to the APC.

Ofem said “Anybody that has a good conscience must support Sen Prince Bassey Otu. We have discovered that APC has a candidate that is dynamic and humble, that’s why we decided to switch”.

WAEC boss dissociates council from state performance report

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has described as untrue, claims that it carried out ranking on performance of states in its recently released examination for school candidates.

Mr Patrick Areghan, WAEC’s Head of National Office, dismissed the claims, which he described as misleading, false and the handiwork of mischief maker.
Areghan, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Lagos, said that the report did not emanate from the council.

“We read from some social media that WAEC has rated performance of states in our recent West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), presumably the 2022 examination for school candidates.

“It ranked Kebbi as being 20th out of the 37 ranked states, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), in the public school-based performance data, supposedly made available by council.

“The malicious report rated Enugu as being first, followed by Edo and Benue, with 93.9, 93.5 and 91.7 per cent respectively among others.

“I want to say here that the ranking is completely false as it did not emanate from council, because there are many other things to be considered to arrive at such percentage and this is not part of our job.

“We, as WAEC, do not do state ranking. We only indicate number of credits in subjects and other categories.
“We do not dabble into areas that are not part of our duty as council,” the WAEC boss said.
He urged the public to disregard the ranking, noting that it was false.

  • Minister, Commissioners advocate patronage of Made-in-Nigeria brands

Minister, Commissioners advocate patronage of Made-in-Nigeria brands

The Minister of State for Budget and National Planning, Prince Clem Agba has called on Nigerians to ditch the mentality of thinking foreign products are better than made-in-Nigeria brands.

He spoke during a facility tour of the assembly plant of Jet Systems Automobile Industries Ltd located at Gbogije, along the Lekki-Epe Expressway in Lagos State.

Agba, who was accompanied by Taraba Commissioner for Budget and Planning, Hon Solomon Elisha awith 25 other Commissioners of Budget and Economic Development across the country, noted that asides better quality of the home-grown brands, they also present many advantages for the country.

He also advocated for a move from primary production to the creation of value adding goods to help improve foreign earnings into the country.

After the tour which also included the display of the Jet Mover Electric Van (the first in Nigeria) and the DC fast charging station, the Minister said he believes the Jet Motor brand and others across the length and breadth of Nigeria were charting a new cause in the fledgling vehicle assemblage industry.

He said: ‘‘A journey of a thousand miles starts with a step and with what I see here and what is happening in other places across Nigeria, we only need publicity and encouragement so that Nigerians begin to accept made in Nigeria products because we tend to think products made outside the country are superior and that mindset has to change”.

He also noted during the tour that the assemblage of Jet Motor vehicles which is done by local engineers is encouraging because it helps in technology transfer, human capital development in terms of employment which boosts the economy because there will be less importation.

    The Minister said:

‘It is in line with the Executive Bill signed by President Muhammadu Buhari to promote local content; what this means is that Nigerians are creating employment for Nigerians and as we create employment, we are invariably dealing with the issue of poverty reduction.
This is very much in line with the vision of the present administration and also in line with the Nation Development Plan 2021-2025.

The Minister also noted that despite the non implementation of the National Automotive Industry Development Plan (NAIDP) of 2014 which discourages the importation of fully built vehicles in Nigeria and encourages local assemblers, the industry is still thriving.

He said; ‘‘The present administration encourages local production and if it didn’t mean anything to the government, I wouldn’t be here. I am not just alone as the Minister, I am here with 25 Commissioners of Budget and Economic Development in the country. That should tell you what this means to the government; of course when you have a policy, it takes time for implementation.

‘‘It is not automatic, it is just like a marriage, the couple does not give birth to a child on the same day they are married. It is a process, and things have to be done in the proper way. There are certain challenges as a country we are going through especially with dwindling revenue coming from the oil sector where we get a large portion of the foreign exchange that we get as a country.
‘‘The National Development Plan of the present administration speaks to quite a number of things that need to be done so that as a country, we go away from primary production of commodities into value-adding products. That means producing commodities with high complexities so that we can begin to export and earn dollars. It is when we continue to export and earn foreign exchange as a country that we will have money to give to businesses to invest, especially those who are seeking FOREX”.
Prince Agba also disagreed, when asked during the Facility Tour that a lack of incentive is discouraging many who have invested billions in the automobile assemblage industry.

‘‘I disagree with that notion that there is a lack of incentive; the duty rate required for the assemblage of SKDs is much lower compared to what is required to pay for a fully assembled vehicle; meaning, if you were to continue to a CKD, the duty fee is even higher. The incentive for an SKD is higher because it is expected that there will be more value here in terms of creating job opportunities”.

While reacting to the visit of the Minister, Wemimo Osanipin, Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Jet Systems Automobile Ltd said that it serves as an incentive to invest more in the economy.
‘‘The visit of the Minister of State for Budget and National Planning means a lot to us; it means that the government recognises what we are doing. The visit serves as an incentive for us to do more by means of further investment in the economy.
‘‘This visit also serves as an opportunity to showcase the unique services that we have on offer because some of the Commissioners who came with the Minister said that they didn’t believe that our Jet automobiles are assembled in Nigeria.
‘‘The Jet mover is one of the two main local brands in Nigeria; others are foreign brands which are not assembled in Nigeria and if they are, they are foreign brands assembled in Nigeria. But the Jetvan is assembled in Nigeria; the brand is owned by Nigeria and we are so happy that the Federal Government is associating with us and they are part of us.
‘‘It shows that they appreciate what we are doing which may lead to patronage in the near future.

He also talked about the unique features of the Jet brand and why it is a travelers choice.

‘‘The Jet Mover offers unique features. The first is the passenger bus, cargo bus, ambulance, the electric passenger bus and the electric cargo bus. These are the brands we have on offer.
‘‘You can get passenger buses here and there but ours is unique; first and foremost our buses have a whole lot of room in terms of size and height. The Jet brand has enough head room as any passenger can walk inside the bus without bending.
‘‘The seats are also constructed in a way that it is high and you can stretch your leg because there is enough leg room. There is also the gang which starts from the door to the extreme end of the bus which only has three seats while also creating enough space for luggage.
‘‘Most Nigerians now opt for road transportation and while going on such long journeys one needs to be entertained. That is why in our buses we have an individualised entertainment system just in case passengers want to play games, watch movies or listen to music. Passengers with flash drives can as well entertain themselves without disturbing the next passenger. There is also a USB port where passengers can charge their phones.

N37.8m scam: Fake Etisalat staff bags 404 years

Justice Akintayo Aluko of the Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has convicted and sentenced a job scammer, Emeka Anaga, to a total of 404 years imprisonment, for conspiracy and fraud.

The judge convicted and sentenced Anaga to 396 years of 12 years imprisonment on each of 33 out of 39 counts of the first charge, and eight years on another charge.

Both sentences of 396 years and eight years total 404 years, but the court held that the sentences will run concurrently, meaning Anaga shall only spend a maximum of 12 years in jail.

Justice Aluko gave the verdict while delivering judgment on a charge filed by the Abakaliki Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Anaga was brought before the Abakiliki, Ebonyi State division of the Federal High Court, in 2018 and 2019, where Justice Aluko was formerly sitting, on charges marked FHC/AI/8c/2019 and FHC/AI/62c/2018, on a 39 and six-count charges respectively.

In the charges, the convict and one Barrister Ken, said to be at large, were accused of introducing themselves to their victim, as a staff of Etisalat telecommunications Limited now 9Mobile, and that he was capable of securing them a contract to supply fuel to all telecommunication companies.

Particularly, he was accused of fraudulently obtaining various sums amounting to N37,805.000, from one Innocent Nwachukwu, Managing Director of IB. Nwachukwu Enterprises, under the pretext of securing a contract for him to install a mast and fuel at different locations in the country.

He was also accused of forging an MTN Identity card.

In both charges, Anaga was alleged to have defrauded his victims of various sums running to millions of naira.

Prosecution counsel, Rotimi Ajobiewe, told the court that the offences contravened Sections 8(a); 1(c) and Section 1(3) of the Advance Fee Fraud and other fraud-related offences Act, 2006.

It also offended Section 2(C) of the Miscellaneous Offences Act, 2004.

Anaga had pleaded not guilty to all the charges during his arraignment in 2018 and 2019, respectively and was admitted to bail in various terms, but unable to perfect same.

Delivering judgment on Wednesday via Zoom, Justice Aluko convicted Anaga of all 39 counts on the charge marked FHC/AI/8c/2019, except on counts one to four, 29 and 34.

The judge also convicted him on count one of the charge marked FHC/AI/62c/2018.

Following the judge’s pronouncement, Anaga’s counsel O. Okorie pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy in sentencing the defendant.

Okorie also appealed to the court, to consider the period his client had spent in custody and urged the court to deduct same from the jail terms.

After listening to the counsel’s submission, Justice Aluko while pronouncing the sentence on a charge marked FHC/AI/8c/2019, sentenced the convict to 12 years imprisonment each on 33 out of the 39 counts charge, totalling 396 years, without an option of fine.

The judge directed that the period Anaga had already spent in prison custody should be computed and deducted from the terms of imprisonment in respect of all the counts.

The judge further held that the sentences and terms of imprisonment to be served by the convict in all the counts should run concurrently and not consecutively.

The convict was then ordered to make restitution of the sum of N37.805 million.

“By the combined effect of the provision of sections 1 (c) and 1(3) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, the offence in count 1 of the charge attracts imprisonment for a term of not more than 20 years and not less than 7 years without the option of a fine.

“Having considered the plea of allocutus of the convict and taking into account all the factors and highlights emphasized in the provisions of sections 311, 401 and 416 of the ACJA, the convict is hereby sentenced to eight years imprisonment on count 1.

The project, which was a mega research grant intervention tagged: ‘Accelerated Development of COVID-19 vaccines using innovative technological approach’ was a collaborative effort involving cluster researchers from five different institutions to consolidate problem-solving research and promote innovation in Nigeria.

TETFund awarded N1,250,000,000.00, distributed to four clusters of researchers.

One of the clusters, which is the Vaccine Production Cluster, got a total grant of N450m

The Vaccine Production Cluster was made up of researchers from the National Veterinary Research Institute Vom, Usman Danfodiyo University Sokoto, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Jos, Nigerian Institute of Medical Research Lagos and National Research Institute for Chemical Technology, Zaria.

Vice Chancellor of Usman Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, Professor Lawal Bilbis, who led the team of researchers to brief the Executive Secretary of TETFund, Sonny Echono on the progress so far, explained that they were able to make the breakthrough through the maximum support of the Fund.

He said: “TETFund believed in us and supported us to get to where we are now. That is why we have come to give a firsthand report on the progress made so far.”

A presentation by Dr. Bashir Bello of Usman Danfodiyo University, Sokoto revealed that it has become a matter of urgency for Africa to join the rest of the world in the production of its own vaccine, as it was estimated that the continent currently imports 99 percent of its vaccines and consumes 25 percent of global vaccine supply.

He explained that this gave rise to the team coming together to form a consortium and put up a strong proposal with which they approached TETFund for sponsorship under its research and development intervention.

He noted that the team was meticulous in their research by ensuring that all the factors responsible for the re-emergence of different COVID-19 variants were considered to make sure they don’t manifest in future.

Echono lauded the team for the great feat achieved within a time limit to make the country proud with the progress recorded in vaccine production.

He explained that it is a national project, and as such, it has become a national pride, assuring that TETFund would continue to assist the cross-cutting efforts of the researchers to ensure the desired goal is achieved.
