  • Panic buying causing petrol scarcity in Abuja

Panic buying causing petrol scarcity in Abuja

The prolonged post-election scarcity of the Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) in Abuja is due to panic buying, according to the Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria (MOMAN).

Speaking with The Nation on phone at the weekend, its Executive Secretary, Mr. Clement Isong, said although the supply to the Federal Capital City (FCT) has increased, customers have increased their daily demand from the normal average demand of N1,800 to an average of N8,000 per customers.

This, according to him, has sustained the fuel scarcity that hit the city after the election.

There have been queues around the retails outlets in the city three days after the February 25 elections.

While some of the fuel stations have no products, the few ones opened to customers, record queues round the clock.

His words: “The product is coming but as soon as it comes, it finishes because customers empty their tanks.

” Product is coming. We have a lot of trucks coming to Abuja.

Panic buying is the major cause of the scarcity right now.

“What started it is that trucks were not moving because of elections. But what is sustaining it right now is the panic buying because we have more trucks carrying products to Abuja than normal.”

Isong who admitted that the e-payment has further compounded the situation empathized with them while seeking understanding for insistence on successful e-payment before dispensing fuel.

He attributed the insistence on payment before service to trust deficit.

According to him, some of the customers are not known to the retail outlets yet they are on transit and may not return to pay after a failed electronic transaction.

Analysing the situation, he said:  “What happens too often is that you get to the pump you have to pay with your ATM card and you cannot pay.

“So many filling stations were losing money because people will get there you will fill their tanks they try to pay with the Point Of Sale (POS) and it doesn’t go through. So what do you want the dealer to do?

“So the dealer said pay me first so that you don’t  just fill your tank and when it is time to pay you are unable to pay.”

Wondering about some customers attitude, he said “80% of the people will never go come back to pay after buying the fuel with a failed transaction. Is that fair?

Commercial people are not stupid, he said stressing it is not the dealers fault to delay customers to transfer their money successfully before supply of the product.

According to him, the dealer must recover his working capital to be able to purchase another stock or even repay its own creditor.

The Executive Secretary said the issue was that Nigeria was not prepared for the pressure on the POS and transfer applications before adopting the cashless policy.

Isong said: “So you should pay first when they receive the money if people were collecting the product and the card does not work it is not their fault.

“It is their fault that we were not ready as a country for the increased pressure on POS or on the application of the POS. Very often when you try the POS it doesn’t work, it doesn’t allow the dealer to collect the money, how will he pay for the next product ?

“The money you pay at the filling station is not the dealer’s money. You have to pay for the product so if he doesn’t gather the money to replenish his stock then he losses money: what he borrows from the bank, he has to pay who gave him the product on credit.

” If not the station will run dry. So the dealer’s have to make sure they collect the money: the working capital so they can pay for the product.”

Isong noted that the turnover was faster when customers were paying cash than now that they paying mostly through electronic transfer.

Oyebanji urges Ekiti residents to accept old notes

Ekiti Governor Biodun Oyebanji has appealed to residents to continue to accept the old and new notes in line with the ruling of the Supreme Court which extended the validity of the old naira notes till December 23, 2023.

The Supreme Court in its March 3 ruling extended the validity date for the old naira notes in a case instituted by some States against the Federal Government with Ekiti State one of them.

Oyebanji, who noted complaints by residents that many business concerns in the State refused to accept the old notes as means of transaction, said it becomes unlawful for any business owner or service provider to reject them.

The Governor, in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media, Yinka Oyebode, on Saturday, urged Ekiti people to accept the old notes till the December deadline and stay clear of actions that could create hardship for one another.

The Governor appealed to market women, artisans, transporters, filling stations, supermarket owners, school proprietors and service providers to remain law abiding and accept the old naira notes.

He also urged the commercial banks and CBN to make the old and new currencies available in their branches and at their automated teller machines (ATM) points in order to ease the stress residents go through to get money for their daily and commercial needs.

“This is an appeal to all residents of Ekiti State to abide by the ruling of the Supreme Court which provides a reprieve for the people by extending the validity date of the old naira notes till December 31st.

“The State Government had joined other states to seek the intervention of  the Supreme Court in reversing the new naira policy which the states averred had inflicted excruciating pain and hardship on the people in addition to crippling economic activities.

“As honourable people, what is expected of us is to abide by the ruling of the apex court and continue to accept the old naira notes as means of transactions and not to inflict further hardship on one another by rejecting it.

“This is a special appeal to all the banks to make the naira notes available in all their branches and pay points and to all traders, business owners, service providers, okada riders, drivers, filling stations, gas plants, supermarkets, schools, hospitals, POS operators, to start accepting the old notes forthwith. To do otherwise would amount to defying the ruling of the highest court in the country and thwarting government efforts at reducing the hardship of the people.

“Our Government will continue to explore avenues to make life more meaningful for our people, as we continue to build a more prosperous state.

“In same vein, Government will not hesitate to arrest and prosecute business owners found rejecting the old naira notes,” the statement reads.

  • LP will face defeat in Abia Gov poll, PDP vows

LP will face defeat in Abia Gov poll, PDP vows

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abia State has said the Labour Party (LP) would face thorough defeat in the next Saturday’s governorship and Assembly elections.

The PDP, in a statement by Michael Nwabueze, for its Campaign Council in Abia, said that Abia people are already aware that Mr. Peter Obi, who made a majority of them vote for LP on the February 25, would not be on the ballot election.

The PDP Campaign Council berated the LP in Abia for alleging that it (PDP) has concluded plans to violently rig the March 18 governorship election, stressing that the reverse is the case.

“Our attention has been drawn to a purported petition by the desperate gang of former All Progressives Congress (APC) members that have hijacked the Labour Party in Abia State titled, “Threat by the PDP-led government in Abia to violently rig the proposed March 18 governorship election in Abia,” and we wish to state that it is another act of desperation by deceptive scare mongers doomed for electoral defeat.

“In the good old days, a thief will run even when nobody is pursuing him. Obviously, members of the LP in Abia are still living in that era, hence, running even when nobody is pursuing them. They are frequently raising false alarms against others, while plotting exactly the same thing.

“This has always been the character and tactics of the desperate serial losers that have currently taken over the LP’s platform in the state after failing miserably, sojourning in the APC and All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA),” the Campaign Council said.

The PDP Campaign Council also alleged that some days ago, the LP in Abia rose from a meeting in Asokoro, Abuja, where they plotted and apportioned roles on how to rig the Abia governorship election to release a false statement that PDP and APC are planning to do exactly what they agreed in their meeting.

According to the Campaign Council, LP has concluded plans to use thugs, rogue security agents and INEC officials to rig Abia 2023 governorship election.

The PDP claimed that it is armed with information and details of LP’s Asokoro meeting and the follow-up meeting in Okagwe Ohafia and Umuru Umuehim Nvosi Isiala Ngwa South, but has decided to focus on the task of winning the election.

The Council further alleged that LP agents working in cohorts with sundry security and officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) hid behind the expected ‘Obi wave’ in the Presidential and National Assembly polls to write election results in Umuahia North, Ohafia, Arochukwu, Aba South, Aba North and Osisioma Ngwa Local Government Areas among others.

The council said: “Indeed, they were the major beneficiaries of the criminally shambolic performance of Abia INEC officials in that election that local and international observers have disclaimed.  “Let it be known that we are aware of multiple rigging plots by LP operatives including recruitment of militants, thugs and sundry characters from neighbouring states and have long alerted security agents to their plot and antics.

“Obviously it is only a tree that will know you want to cut it down and still stand there to wait for you. Members of Abia PDP are not trees.

“Conscious of the fact that any free and fair election in our state will inevitably lead to the expected landslide victory of the biggest party, by hundreds of kilometres in the state, we wish to call on INEC and security agencies to ignore the rants of a party that knows it is impossible for it to win a free and fair election in the state and take all necessary measures to conduct a peaceful, free and fair election in the state as we are determined to resist any attempt to abridge the free choice of Abia voters.”

The Council said no other candidate contesting in the 2023 governorship election in Abia enjoys the widespread love and acceptance across the state as its governorship candidate, Chief Okey Ahaiwe.

“We are equally proud of our entrenched democratic credentials and structure in the state, hence have no need to employ desperate measures to take what is rightly destined to come to us as a result of our great service to Ndi Abia,” he added.
