    Nigeria launches tobacco control website

The Federal Government in collaboration with Development Gateway (DG), a data for development nonprofit organisation, has developed the Tobacco Control Data Initiative (TCDI) website, which creates a “ one-stop-shop” that would allow stakeholders and the public access the relevant and up-to-date data to advance tobacco control legislation in the country.

In a statement in Abuja, Development Gateway said the TCDI is in response to the increased use of tobacco products in Nigeria and the various dangers it portends for the public, especially young people.

According to the Development Gateway, the TCDI has become necessary due to the staggering statistic about tobacco use in Nigeria.

“At least 16,100 Nigerians die annually because of illnesses linked to tobacco use. 3.2 million Nigerians between the ages of 15 and 49 used tobacco in 2018; and about 200,000 tobacco users are women (NDHS, 2018). While tobacco consumption globally is decreasing, by 2030 the number of smokers in Africa is anticipated to rise by nearly 40% from 2010 levels.

“This is the largest expected increase in the world; particularly alarming when juxtaposed with the fact that Nigeria is a tobacco production hub and was the third largest exporter of cigarettes in 2018 (Africa’s Tobacco Epidemic, Tobacco Tactics, 2020).”

The organisation said the TCDI would fill in the data gap in tobacco control that would enable legislators and decision makers use correct data to inform public health policies.

“Certain legislative policies are proven to reduce the use of tobacco products. Through their research, the TCDI team identified common themes in the data landscape. These relate to concerns about data accuracy, comparability, timeliness, and accessibility. As a result, the TCDI team understands the data needs and gaps, has identified existing data, and developed the TCDI Nigeria website that enables decision-makers to use essential data to inform tobacco control policy more effectively.”

Speaking further, the Development Gateway said the website would make use of primary and secondary data to present tobacco control information in a user-friendly format with graphs, facts and success stories.

“Together, partners co-designed a publicly available website (https://nigeria.tobaccocontroldata.org/) that aims to address key decision-making needs. The website equips stakeholders in government, civil society, academia, and the general public with reliable and up-to-date evidence to promote tobacco control and public health.

“It draws on both primary and secondary data sources and presents tobacco control information in user-friendly formats such as graphs, infographics, myths and facts, and success stories. The website will feature six themes: tobacco prevalence, tobacco harm, illicit trade, taxation, industry interference, and shisha use. The website will be updated with new information as this becomes available over the course of the program.”

In developing the dashboard, the Development Gateway said it made use of existing data as well as interviews with key members of the tobacco control community.  “Before creating the TCDI Nigeria website, the TCDI team assessed the existing data and stakeholder needs through hour-long interviews with key members of the tobacco control community. The learnings from the assessment were validated with stakeholders during a workshop in November 2020 before technical development was started in early 2021. The website was created through an agile, co-design process in close consultation with key tobacco control stakeholders in Nigeria, including the Federal Ministry of Health; Nigerian Tobacco Research Group, Federal Revenue Inland Services.”

Among the partners working on the dashboard are the Federal Ministry of Health, University of Cape Town Research Unit on the Economics of Excisable Products (REEP) and the Development Gateway.

  • Three main reasons Corpers seek redeployment

Three main reasons Corpers seek redeployment

National Youth Service Corps(NYSC), a national scheme, created to reconstruct, reconcile and rebuild after the Civil war is no longer as valued as it was. It can be sad to receive your call up letter and realise that you’ve been posted to a state you know fully well isn’t safe, especially in far North. Here are some reasons why Corps members redeploy:

    First of all, insecurity doesn’t

encourage graduates to serve in the North. The recent happenings and tales of unrest have created fear in the mind of new corpers, also making it worse for those already posted to those areas to serve adequately without fear of death or being bombed.

Unfortunately, the North has always carried this stereotype as a place characterised by loss of lives and properties due to herdsmen activities, bombing and terrorism. Most Youth corpers posted to the North seek a redeployment because of that constant fear of death always hanging in the air. Even parents express discomfort when their children are posted to the northern states because they worry for their safety.

It was reported that a Miss Faith Onoriade was kidnapped on her way to NYSC Orientation camp on March 21, 2022. The incident happened around Abuja-Kaduna Road axis. The kidnappers later asked for a N40 million ransom while her widowed mother pleads to the NYSC and the Federal Government to help secure her release. She hasn’t been found till now. Insecurity is the topmost reason why youth corpers redeploy.

Another valid reason service corpers find it hard to cope in the North is lack of basic amenities and infrastructure that can make a service year successful. When it comes to housing, they will consider how durable the accomodation allocated to them is. They will consider how much water access they have not forgetting environmental conditions and power supply. These are paramount considerations corpers look at when they are called to serve in certain states.

Health issues: Adjusting to new environment can take a while, extra effort will be needed if sickness or unhealthy living becomes a problem. Youth corpers ask for a redeployment to other locations on the basis of sickness in order to get better access to healthcare services. Knowing they will not like where they are being posted to, there is little enthusiasm amongst youth corpers to answer the call. These reasons make them find other routes to get better places to serve. Some even forfeit doing their service year at all.

  • Four reasons marriages of actors may not work

Four reasons marriages of actors may not work

British-Nigerian actor and writer, Kalu Ikeagwu is seeking dissolution of his six- year-old marriage to Ijeoma Eze on the grounds that she denies him sex and access to his 10-year-old step daughter, and three-year-old son.

This case was in an Ikeja High court on Monday, 30th May. Their experience shows the harsh realities embedded in marriage, which many couples, especially weak ones won’t be able to fight through. Here are some reasons why the marriage of actors may not work:

Absence: People paint marriage to be a fairytale story, rushing into it without taking into consideration the hitches and the compatibility checks. This concept carries a lot of responsibility to take on because you’re no longer thinking for yourself alone but for a partner and likely children with whom you will share your burdens and laughs with. The major reason why their marriage is on the verge of collapse is because of his unstable presence to perform his role as a husband. As is obvious, absence seems to be the greatest problem for married actors.

Trust issues: This can arise from not seeing your spouse for a long time whilst knowing they are in the company of other people on the same set for weeks. Some roles given to actors can incite some suspicions in their partners especially if it is sex related.

Roles: The roles actors play in movies has an effect on them. They start exhibiting those traits even in their homes and this comes unconsciously at times. It is worse If the role affects them psychologically. Method acting has this to book because it takes some time for actors to come out of their roles. This can in many ways affect a marriage.

Lack of effective communication: Seeing as one party is always on set and has little time to catch up with the other, communication may slip. This may not be an immediate effect but in the long run, this will become a huge problem. Time spent away makes actors miss out on great experiences with their families, the stages of growth for the children, the family bonding and much more. Considering the nature of the job, they are never in the same place long enough as scene’s are taken in different locations, Inter-state even.

Star actor, Stanley Ebuka Nzediegwu and his wife Blessing Jessica Obasi are doing nice job of their marriage. Their YouTube channel programme “how we met” has good viewership where they share hilarious and cute content about moments in their marriage. He said in their 10 fun facts YouTube video, “what I cherish most about our relationship is the fact that we are very vulnerable with each other”. Their aggressive communication and YouTube time together is a good way of strengthening their relationship and enhancing effective communication

  • Reviewing Adenike Jombo’s DÉJÀ VU

    Reviewing Adenike Jombo’s DÉJÀ VU

Adenike Jombo’s DÉJÀ VU is a story that reflects the realities of a lot of people. The fear and uncertainty accompanied with the present as a result of the past. In the short story, we find Michael, a loving young whom, according to the turn of events in the story, did not have any ulterior motive, in his relationship with Elizabeth. They never had a fight. They never cheated on each other, however, suddenly, Michael decided one morning to break up his two years long relationship. And, this was the reason, “Hmm. I can’t date a popular girl. I can’t stand that every guy seems to know my girlfriend, and moreover, I don’t know how to compete. You are too beautiful and you attract lots of attention.” One could deduce fear, and uncertainty as the reason, why he could do that.

The writer never said, but perhaps, Michael might have had a relationship in the past, and out of that experience, he decided to end things with Elizabeth. Perhaps, in the previous relationship, his lover jilted him, because she was beautiful, popular and had lots of admirers, who subsequently took her from him. Elizabeth as innocent as she is, may not know this fact. She may not know this hidden truth, but she paid for it. She paid for what she doesn’t know about.

Fred on the other hand, had a fear – a deep, rooted fear – for relationship. The fear of not being imperfect. The fear of erring. The fear of hurting his lover. It is beyond, the sex, but it is more about him, being a perfect match, being a perfect lover to his girlfriend and a perfect husband to his wife. This is the fear, he harboured, but no one knows about, not even his best friend. By reason of that fear, he hurts Elizabeth. He hurts her more, even as he try not to hurt her. He became imperfect, even as he tried to be perfect.

“There has been no woman since Michelle. I have never had any other woman close. And it is because I am scared.”

“Scared? Scared of what exactly? I am lost. Talk to me, you are driving me crazy.”

“I am scared of hurting you.”

“Hurting me? You are already hurting me.”

And, he continue to fail her expectations, even as he tried to up to expectation with her. We find her once more, paying for what she doesn’t know about – indeed, this is a Déjà vu.

The short story, tells about life. A times in life, we live in fear. A lot of persons make decisions, make statements out of fear. Fear limits your understanding. Fear limits your objectivity and fear limits your will. Out of fear, Michael jilted Elizabeth, and out of fear Fred was scared to ask Elizabeth out, even when it is crystal clear, he loves her. And, it was the fear that caused the déjà vu – the experience of thinking a current situation had occurred before in time past.

Adenike Jombo’s Déjà vu also tells about the fact that sometimes, people are merely a victim of coincidence. Elizabeth was a victim of coincidence in the story. She was innocent all through, but we find her suffering emotionally for the bane of others, not until, she was about to face her challenge and tackle it courageously. We see the courageous step she took by swallowing her pride, to ask Fred, “Fred do you love me?” and then he opened up, admit his fears and confessed. That saved their relationship.

Adenike Jombo deployed a constructive imaginative power, forged out of a creative spirit to tell this short, yet revealing story. A story of love and hate, courage and fear, and strength and weakness. It tells of how important for one to guide his heart against fear. The past can only haunt you, if you let it happen.

Adenike Jombo’s déjà vu is a perfect story. In language and style, imagery and diction, and no doubt it is a good read, highly recommended for everyone.
