Protesters, vandals don’t have money in bank – Susan Peters

Actress Susan Peters has accused individuals championing protests over cash scarcity and vandalisation of public properties as mischief makers who actually do not have money in the banks.

Acknowledging the current situation of the country demanded prompt action, Peters argued the resort to violence and burning of banks as well as other public facilities would be counterproductive because when the current challenge expires, the damages that have been done would yet remain until they are sorted.

She warned those engaging in these brutal acts to desist forthwith.

She said: “Hey everyone! How’re you all doing? Hope you all are doing great?! Well, situation in the country, is a call for concern”, she said in a video shared on her Instagram page.

Nnamani condemns killings, attacks in Enugu

Former Enugu Governor Senator Chimaroke Nnamani has condemned attacks and killings in the State that have claimed some politicians.

The Enugu East Senator, in a statement in Abuja, urged the security operatives not to leave any stone unturned to bring the perpetrators to justice.

He said the perpetrators of the heinous crimes are enemies of the people that must be fished out forthwith.

He insisted that anything to the contrary would
be a disservice to God and humanity.

According to him, the series of attacks on various political parties campaign convoy; first on the Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP) bus at Topland, the second on All Progressives Congress (APC) at Agbani and that of Labour Party (LP) at Ekeotu (yesterday) was allegedly planned and executed by unknown gunmen who came to enforce the no election agenda.

He condemned the attacks in no unmistakable terms and urged governments and the citizens to rise up against the perpetrators who are planning to disrupt the elections in the South East region.

According to the statement,”Nnamani has been in the forefront and indeed the first notable political leader from the South East Zone to openly condemn the activities of unknown gunmen and the sit-at-home order by the proscribed indigenous peoples of Biafra (IPOB) bedeviling the region.

“In September 20, 2021, Senator Nnamani in a statement warned that the sit-at-home order was against the collective interest of the Igbo because it has brought the economy and social life in the region to its knees.

“The former Governor had also condemned the attacks on citizens and their businesses by the perpetrators on account of the sit-at-home order.”

According to him, “the trinity of Igbo character is defined by igba mbo (hustle), akonuche (cot of wisdom) and njepu (sojourn). The sit-at-home is antithetical to the innate Igbo tripartite traits and a betrayal of Igbo interest.”

He had warned that “most of our people live on daily income. Think of the market women who depend on daily earnings to feed their families.

“Think of students writing external examinations being denied access to the venues . This must not be allowed to continue.

“How does enslaving our people, denial of means of livelihood add value to our quest for equity and Justice?

“In our struggle for equity and Justice in the Nigerian federation, we cannot inadvertently be inflicting more injuries on ourselves by this sit-at-home order. Let wise counsel prevail.”

Private sector makes many presidents envy me, says Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday hailed the nation’s private sector for constantly working together for public good under his watch.

He said captains of industry have made him the “envy of many presidents of the world”.

President Buhari spoke at the inauguration and handover of security equipment valued at over N12 billion donated to the military and the Nigeria Police Force at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

The items were donated by the Coalition of Private Sector Against COVID-19 (CACOVID), a group of eminent Nigerian industrialists, including Aliko Dangote and Herbert Wigwe, who also pooled N40 billion to combat COVID-19 across the country.

In a statement in Abuja by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, the President said: “Ladies and gentlemen. Today is indeed a very happy day for all Nigerians, and I can happily say that I am the envy of many Presidents in the world.

“I am exceedingly honoured to be the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, at this time.

“I am gratified to have the honour of leading a country whose private sector willingly galvanises itself to raise funds to enthusiastically support government in resolving social ills.

“I am proud to say that there is nowhere in the entire world, except in Nigeria, where the private sector has voluntarily come together to assist government efforts.”

President Buhari, on behalf of all Nigerians, thanked members of CACOVID, its leadership team and technical committee, for their support and patriotism.

“This final gesture from CACOVID as you wind down your activities is equally very important.

“Thank you for supporting our administration’s efforts to strengthen the police and military as we face the security challenges that all modern nations face.

“These 350 vehicles and thousands of vests and helmets you are handing over today will go a long way in boosting the capacity of our forces,” he said.

According to the President, in its drive to ensure a golden Nigeria, CACOVID, which also received the support of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), expanded its scope beyond combating COVID-19.

He added that following the unsavoury national unrest in 2020 and the continuing security challenges in parts of the country, the coalition again galvanised support among private sector organisations to support the Federal Government in surmounting the security challenges.

“In this regard, the coalition commendably raised N12 billion, which was used to procure critical security equipment for our domestic law enforcement and defence organisations,” he said.

The following state-of the-art security vehicles and equipment were procured for use by law enforcement agencies in Abuja and Lagos:

100 units of 14-tonnes Tata trucks; 100 units of 12 tonnes Tata trucks; 106 units of Toyota vans; 64 units of Nissan Navara vans; 13,000 ballistic vests; 26,000 ballistic plates and 13,000 ballistic helmets.

Dangote named Folorunsho Alakija, Tony Elumelu, Segun Agbaje, Abdulsamad Rabiu, Femi Otedola, Adesola Adeduntan, Karl Toriola, Haresh Aswani, Raji Gupta and John Coumantaros as the moving forces behind CACOVID.

“For the last two years, the leadership team met on a weekly basis, mobilised others in the private sector, and were able to raise N82 billion to provide 39 fully kitted isolation centres, testing supplies for almost 1 million tests and food for 10 million vulnerable individuals across the country,” he said.

Dangote added that from the N82 billion, the CACOVID team also donated oxygen and tanks to the most affected states, supported vaccines delivery and distribution, supported the reopening of the economy via travel portal, IT, airport scanners and Personal Protection Equipment (PPE), among others.

The group also appealed to the National Assembly to quickly wade into the crisis generated by the currency swap policy of the Federal Government, saying every policy must have a human face.

“The mandate is God’s plan for the progress of our great country, and we believe it can never be derailed, we pledge our total loyalty to the party and the mandate of our Principal, Leader and incoming President.

“Whoever is advising the President to take a decision against the judgement of the highest court in the land is not only making a mockery of the judiciary and the entire nation, but also posing a big threat to our hard-earned democracy, so, we implore and plead with fellow citizens not to allow this happen by being patient and calm, for the law to take it course,” it said.

Wisdom better than weapon of war, OMTC tells Nigerians

A faith-based organisation, Obey The Macedonia Call (OTMC), has called on Nigerians to prayerfully embrace the wisdom that is better than weapons of war to turn the forthcoming polls into stepping stones towards building the nation.
The organisation said many fathers and patriots of old knew that this sensitive moment in Nigeria’s history would finally come when one generation would have to make that decision on behalf of the future.

In a statement by Pastor Ladi Thompson endorsed by Pastors Tunde Bakare, Alfred Ohiani, Sam and Nike Adeyemi, John Joseph Hayab and others like Gboyega Omoba (MBE), Taiwo Odukoya, Wale Adefarasin, and Ayo Ogunyemi, the organisation said they are not unaware of the crippling pains that the orchestrated fuel scarcity and shortage of currency has brought upon the nation.

‘’The good news we bring in this hour is that we have examined all the contributing factors and can announce a simple solution that will be a game-changer.

‘’Opinions will always differ on how things should be done in a multi-ethnic, multi-religious and multi-generational country like ours. More so when the trauma of our violent past and painful experiences has never been healed.

‘’Yet the truth is that the average Nigerian citizen, north, south, east and west are, peace-loving, trusting and patient African at heart. So why can’t we rise beyond the engineered divisions and stress to deploy the creative African advantage that defines our heritage.

‘’It is a known fact worldwide that it takes an entire community to bring up a child in Africa because we (left to ourselves) are our brothers’ keepers and God-fearing people, not to mention our natural tribal masteries of non-violent communication and the use of proverbs in settling all disputes.’’

To de-escalate the present tensions’, the organisation said: ‘’We need to consider the fact that most of us mean well. In a sense, we are all victims of history, from the president to the peasant! Our greatest problems are systemic in nature, and we must not allow anyone to lead us on a self-destructive path.

‘’We ask all Nigerians to please listen to the following instructions and embrace their God-given African heritage to become an agent of peace. Nigerians should cool down, lower their voices and embrace non-violent communication with proverbs since it is better to jaw-jaw than war-war.

‘’Also, let all God-fearing people meet with others in the neighbourhoods and resident associations to agree on strategies to keep their streets peaceful and safe for children. Let each household store essential food to last a few days and encourage the rationing and sharing of all resources within neighbourhood clusters.’’

OTMC advised that Nigerians should deliberately isolate the mischief makers in any community by using the tokens of peace to mark all households of peace while appealing to matriarchs and parents who can speak directly into the hearts of the wayward ones.

‘’It is imperative that we make and keep the peace throughout Nigeria next week while we work in cooperation with the Nigerians and well-wishers in the diaspora who are praying and offering their support for the peaceful conduct of elections.

‘’More counsels will be announced in the days ahead, so please stay vigilant. Nigerians in the Diaspora can contact the following for more information on how to build peace and the future of Nigeria.’’

  • America’ll stand with Ukraine to achieve lasting peace, says envoy

America’ll stand with Ukraine to achieve lasting peace, says envoy

U.S. Representative to the United Nations Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield speaks on upholding Ukraine’s sovereignty in the face of Russia’s aggression.   At the New York Foreign Press Center briefing attended by United States Bureau Chief OLUKOREDE YISHAU, Thomas-Greenfield details how America, the United Nations and allies are taming Russia and why the United States will stand with Ukraine for as long as it takes to achieve a just and lasting peace. Excerpts:

Biden’s meeting with Zelenskyy and related issues

President Biden went to Kyiv yesterday and stood shoulder to shoulder with President Zelenskyy to remind the world that one year later, Kyiv stands.  Today we heard the President say in Poland that a world in which the fundamental principles of the UN Charter will be upheld.  And today, Ukraine still stands.  Democracy still stands.  And America and the world still stands with Ukraine.

Putin thought he would break the coalition of countries that have supported Ukraine over the last year.  He thought he could easily roll over Ukraine.  He thought he could tear the UN Charter to shreds.  He was wrong.  The people of Ukraine have proven their determination to defend their freedom, and one year later the United States and our allies and partners have proven that we will ensure that Ukraine has what it needs to defend its people and territory against Russia’s aggression for as long as it takes.

Over the past year, in cooperation with allies and partners, we have done everything in our power to help Ukraine defend itself, because Russia has shown no interest in ending this war.  And here at the UN for the past year, you’ve seen us stand up for the fundamental principles of the UN Charter.  Leading up to the brutal full-scale invasion, we held meeting after meeting.  We made it clear that Russia was preparing to invade, even as Russia denied, denied, denied.  Then Russia launched their full-scale invasion at the very moment when we were sitting in the Security Council.  While we sought peace, Putin chose war.

So we have worked with the international community to respond.  Just days after Russia launched its attack, the UN General Assembly adopted with 141 votes from countries across the globe a resolution condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and demanding Russia withdraw its troops.  Then in March, the UN General Assembly reconvened to adopt a resolution deploring the humanitarian crisis caused by Russia’s aggression.  And in April, we successfully led a push to suspend Russia from the Human Rights Council for its gross and systematic violations of human rights.

In May, we used our presidency of the Security Council to shine a light on how Russia’s attacks on Ukraine were hurting others around the world too by exacerbating global food insecurity.  We rallied more than 100 countries to sign onto a Roadmap for Global Food Security.  And this past October, 143 countries – 143 member-states – voted to reject Russia’s illegal attempted annexation of Ukrainian territory and upheld Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity once again – 143 members.  It was a strong rebuke by the international community.  The world time and time again has sent an unequivocal message to President Putin:  Silence your weapons, withdraw your troops, end this war.  Because we all know that the longer this war goes on, the more the Ukrainian people will suffer; the more the world, especially countries in the Middle East and Africa that rely on Ukraine’s grain, will suffer.

    UN General Assembly

This week the UN General Assembly will have the opportunity to vote on a resolution that calls on countries to support diplomatic efforts to achieve a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace in Ukraine – a peace consistent with the UN Charter, especially the fundamental principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity.  This resolution also urges countries to work together to address the global impact of the war, including on food security, energy, finance, the environment, and nuclear security and safety.

Already 68 countries have co-sponsored this important text, and we strongly encourage all member-states to vote for this resolution, to vote for peace.  I want to emphasize that supporting peace in Ukraine is in no way about a great power competition.  This is not somehow about choosing between the United States and Russia.  This is about defending the UN Charter, this is about doing our part to end the scourge of war, and this is about reaffirming one of this institution’s core principles – that one country – one country cannot take the territory of another by force.

Let me end by saying Russia alone could end this war today.  Until it does so, the United States will stand united with Ukraine for as long as it takes to achieve a just and lasting peace.

Expectations on turnout for the resolution in the General Assembly

As I said, we have 68 countries that have already signed up to co-sponsor this resolution, and we are continuing to work with other countries to address any issues or questions they may have about the resolution.  We think this is a simple resolution to support.  It is a resolution that calls for peace, it is a resolution that calls for negotiation, in line with the Charter of the United Nations, in line with the values of the Charter of the United Nations.  So we think this should be something that countries should find easy to support, and we’ll look forward to seeing the vote on that day.  I can’t predict what it’s going to be, but I can just say that given all of the work that all of us have put into this, we’re looking forward to having a robust debate and discussion and vote.

    Chinese peace initiative

On China, we are not expecting or projecting that China will submit anything – any counter-resolutions or any other documentation, but that’s a question I think you’ll have to ask the Chinese directly.

And in terms of the resolution, what we are calling for are negotiations.  And we’re calling for the two sides to sit together.  We’re calling for peace.  But any cessation of hostilities require the Russians, who are – who initiated hostilities, to cease this war.  They can end the fighting today by stopping the fighting, by taking their troops out of Ukraine and ending the war, and going to the negotiating table.  If Ukraine stopped fighting – and you heard Secretary Blinken say this over and over again, and I’ve said it as well – if Ukraine stops fighting, Ukraine ends.  If Russia stops fighting, the war ends.

    Conditions for negotiation

Look, it’s not for us to decide the conditions for negotiations.  It’s for the Ukrainians to decide what conditions they will negotiate under.  But what we want to do is put them in as strong a position as possible so that when they go to the negotiating table, they are in a position of strength.

The impact of a UN General Assembly resolution

It sends a strong message, first to Russia, that their actions are unacceptable, it isolates Russia in the General Assembly as well as in the Security Council, and I think it isolates Russia around the world.  And a strong vote also sends the message to Russia that they need to sit at the negotiating table.  They are a pariah state right now, and they – if they want to be – to move forward in this world, they have to end this war.  They have to go to the negotiating table, and the only way that they can do that is for them to take their troops out of Ukraine and end the war.  And a strong vote in the General Assembly will send that message to them in no uncertain terms.  They will see that the world remains unified against their unprovoked actions in Ukraine.

How difficult it was to get support for the resolution

It takes a lot of hard work.  We’re unified in our strong condemnation of Russia’s actions in Ukraine, but we want to make sure that we bring others into this condemnation, into this group, into this unity that we have established.   So we have a lot of meetings, as you can imagine.  We have a lot of meetings, we have a lot of group meetings, we have a lot of one-on-one meetings with countries, and we worked hard with the Ukrainian Government to forge a resolution that everyone could support.  Because this is a resolution that stands on the principles of the UN charter.  It stands on a country’s right to sovereignty and the integrity of their borders, and it condemns any action by another country in terms of compromising their neighbor’s borders.  So there is very little there in this document that anyone would disagree with.

Italy’s role in the war in Ukraine

Italy has an important role to play.  Italy is a member of NATO, they’re part of the G7, and they’re a close ally and strong friend of the United States.  And we have worked closely with the Italian Government on a range of shared issues.  As we – and we will continue to do that.  And what is happening in Ukraine is something that we share, it’s something that we both believe in.  And as President Biden just came out of – just came out of Kyiv, I thought it was important for him to talk to President
Meloni about her visit to Kyiv and to share what he was able to assess on his trip there.

So I thought it was a good time for them to have a discussion on a range of issues, and I have a very close working relationship with your ambassador here in New York as well, and we regularly exchange views and ideas on how we will continue to work together to address the issues related to Ukraine.
