The United Kingdom (UK) immigration authorities have kept sealed lips over the reported arrest and detention of the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, by its officials at Heathrow Airport.
The Nation reports that Obi was detained for questioning on Friday, April 7, when he arrived in London, from Nigeria.
He was accosted by an immigration officer who handed him a detention note and told him to step aside.
The Obi-Datti Media, in a statement by its Head, Diran Onifade, said Obi was detained by UK immigration officials over alleged impersonation.
According to Onifade, the alleged impostor, who perpetrated the duplication offences, is still at large.
Also, The Nation had raised a series of posers as regards the reported arrest of Obi which elicited a series of controversies.
Querying what must have gone wrong because Obi had been to the UK a couple of times in the past, The Nation reached out to the UK authorities for comments.

Minister raises alarm over abuse of children at motor parks

Worried over the rate of abuse of children, especially girls at different motor parks nationwide, Minister of Women Affairs, Pauline Tallen has called for drastic action against what she described as a bad menace.
She spoke in Abuja at the 10th National Delegate Conference of the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN).
Tallen charged the leadership of the association to enlighten its members by mounting graphics on GBV around parks.
She said: “When I sometimes visit parks in the company of family, I still see young children; girls and boys hawking when they should be in school. Yet, your members turn blind eyes to such scenarios.
In some cases, these children become victims of exploitation and abuse, and because they are powerless, they have no voice and are afraid to report and so the cycle of abuse continues.
“Even women have reported such abuses in the parks”.
While delivering his acceptance speech after he was unanimously adopted as the RTEAN’s 10th National President, Musa Muhammed, urged President-elect Bola Ahmed Tinubu to prioritize the transportation sector as it: “creates employment and direct the economy”.
In a similar development, RTEAN in collaboration with Wema Bank and Digix Technologies also launched a technology to provide a hitch-free transportation system for Nigerians.

Muhammed, represented by the RTEAN’s Deputy National President (Administration), Muhammad Abubakar Bishara, said the technology named, ‘Karrygo’, was in line with the cashless policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
Muhammed said the programme, during implementation, would put in check issues of insecurity, as all information about the travellers’ final destinations would have been collated from the digital manifest generated in the cause of processing their payment for the journey.
He said: “We hope that when this programme comes into full implementation, a lot more sanity would have been enthroned in the road transport sector in Nigeria.
“After this official launching, all our members across the country will be properly trained on what should be done to achieve greater results. This is because we need personnel and men to handle the equipment to be used. For instance, non-internet P.O.S, which will function without a network, because of those in the remote areas”.

Afenifere USA opposes interim govt, urges Tinubu to unite Nigeria

The Afenifere Renewal Group in the United States of America (ARG-USA) has congratulated President-elect Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu on his electoral victory at the February 25 poll.

It condemned calls for an Interim National Government (ING) and urged Tinubu to unite the country by forming a government of national unity.

The group, in a statement by ARG-USA’s Publicity Secretary Lanre Balogun, described Tinubu’s victory as a testament to his dedication to Nigerians and steadfast commitment to building a better and more prosperous nation for all.

It said following the elections, it was time for the country to “reflect and heal.”

“As President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu begins to assemble his team, we urge him and his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), to extend a hand of fellowship across political, regional, and religious lines to unite the country and form an inclusive government based on fairness and competence.

“We strongly condemn the recent calls to establish an interim government in Nigeria, thereby truncating the democratic process and undermining the will of the people”.

ARG-USA said it believed in the peaceful transition of power as a key tenet of democracy. It warned that any attempt to circumvent the democratic process through illegitimate means would be opposed.

“We also call on the international community to remain vigilant and monitor the situation closely. Any attempt to undermine democracy in Nigeria will have far-reaching consequences, not just for the country, but for the entire region and the world at large.” ARG-USA further stated.

The US-based group also condemned acts of violence against voters across the country and urged the incoming administration to protect democracy by addressing electoral violence, intimidation, and other obstacles voters encountered during the elections.

ARG reiterated its commitment to promoting democracy, good governance, and the rule of law in Nigeria.

“We call on all Nigerians to uphold these values and work together to build a brighter future for our great country. With Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as our President, our hopes are renewed, and we are optimistic that better days will come,” it added.

OAU killing: Varsity not proactive on gangsterism, says Law Alumni

…Condemns mob action as heartless, despicable

The University of Ife Law Class of 1987 Association has condemned the mob attack on a fifth-year engineering student, Ahize Okoli, at the Obafemi Awolowo Hall of Residence of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, which allegedly caused his death.

It said the incident raised concerns about the varsity authorities’ proactiveness in tackling the menace of gangsterism at the institution.

The association in a statement signed by its President, Caleb Arogundade, described the mob action as “despicable” and “lawless.”

Okoli, of the Civil Engineering Department, was reportedly beaten on Monday, April 10 on suspicion that he stole a mobile phone.

It was reported that his health deteriorated and he was rushed to the OAU Teaching Hospital, Ile-Ife, where he was confirmed dead the next day.

Condemning the incident, the association expressed alarm that students of the “prestigious university” could descend into jungle justice against their fellow student.

It said: “The  University of Ife Law Class of 1987 Association is disheartened by the despicable mob action that took place at Obafemi Awolowo Hall of Residence of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, on Monday the 10th day of April 2023.

“The lawless action led to the gruesome death of Ahize Okoli, a Part 5 Engineering student of the University.

“It is worrisome that students of our prestigious university which we proudly call “GREAT IFE” could resort to barbaric behaviour in dispensing jungle justice to a fellow student who was accused of theft.”

The alumni commended the university authorities for taking “the right steps to identify those behind the dastardly act, ensure justice is duly served and put in place a mechanism to eradicate obnoxious lex talionis and other forms of self-help within the institution.”

It noted that the leadership of the university has an overarching duty to protect the lives of its staff and students particularly when they are within the precincts of the institution.”

Nevertheless, it held the school authorities responsible for gangsterism on campus.

The statement added: “The current scandal is palpable proof that the authorities of the university were not proactive in tackling the menace of gangsterism which has now taken the life of a precious student.

“We are deeply concerned that the Great Ife from which we graduated over thirty-five years ago is being portrayed as the dark chamber of torture and jungle justice.

“The leadership of the university must decisively do the needful to stamp out this despicable behaviour among the students.

“Parents and guardians must be assured of the safety and physical well-being of their wards for as long as they remain within the school campus.”

The class also offered assistance to return the university to its glory days.

It said: “Our Class is prepared to partner with the authority of the University in any possible and acceptable way with a view to sustaining the status of the University as one of the best in the world.

“May the soul of Ahize Okoli rest in peace, Amen!”
