  • Otu reaffirms unity, highlights key milestones in 2026 in New Year message

Otu reaffirms unity, highlights key milestones in 2026 in New Year message

Cross River Governor, Senator Bassey Edet Otu, has called on Cross Riverians to sustain unity and collective purpose as the surest pathway to shared prosperity, declaring that the state’s steady progress is the fruit of inclusive governance and deliberate collaboration.

In his 2026 New Year message entitled: “Together, We Flourish,” the Governor expressed profound gratitude to God for life and preservation, noting that many who began 2025 with the state did not live to see the New Year.

Reflecting on the journey so far, Otu reminded the Cross Riverians that from the outset of his administration, he made it clear that governance would be participatory. “I was not pretentious of having all the answers,” he said, stressing that development could only be achieved through collective effort. This conviction, he explained, birthed the “Think Cross River” initiative—an attitudinal reorientation project urging citizens to place the state’s interest above personal considerations.

The Governor said this philosophy of togetherness informed the constitution of key advisory and governance structures, including the State Elders’ Forum (SEF), the Economic Management Team (EMT), the state Strategic Policy Advisory Committee (SPAC), and the Party Caucus Forum (PCF). According to him, these bodies were designed to provide both wisdom and technical guidance in steering the affairs of the state.

He commended members of the various bodies for their shared vision and cooperation, noting that his cabinet reflects the diversity of Cross River State. “Every ethnic nationality, every local government area and every senatorial district is a stakeholder in my administration,” Governor Otu stated, describing these steps as “verifiable indices of an inclusive government.”

Otu said the unity of purpose has yielded tangible dividends, evident in improved livelihoods and visible achievements across sectors. He said the gains recorded in the past two and a half years are the direct outcome of collective resolve and consistent teamwork.

On agriculture, the Governor informed his administration has deliberately repositioned the sector as the backbone of the state’s economy. He announced the establishment of crop-specific clusters across the state, with rice in Ndok Ogoja, cassava in Odukpani and Obubra, oil palm in Boki and Akamkpa, cocoa in Etung and Ikom, alongside coffee cultivation statewide. He also revealed that a Value Chain Policy Strategy committee has been inaugurated for cocoa, oil palm and coffee.

To enhance productivity, Governor Otu said 108 three-wheel tractors have been distributed to farmers’ cooperatives, while 100 fishing and commercial boats were provided to riverine communities. He added that oil palm estates are being repositioned through Public-Private Partnerships, while digital soil mapping has been completed to guide prospective agro-investors. “We recently performed the groundbreaking for the Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zone in partnership with the African Development Bank,” he noted.

On infrastructure, the Governor described the Bakassi Deep Seaport as the state’s most significant economic game-changer. He recalled that following comprehensive technical studies, the Federal Executive Council approved the project with an initial capital outlay of $2.27 billion. “On December 17, 2025, we received the Certificate of Compliance—the final approval document. We are now counting days to the formal groundbreaking,” he announced.

Otu also stated Cross River State has successfully reclaimed ownership of the Tinapa Business and Resort Limited from AMCON after years of inactivity. He disclosed that discussions are already underway with investors, particularly in agriculture-related ventures, to revive the iconic facility.

The Governor urged Cross Riverians to remain united, stressing that togetherness remains the key to sustained progress. “To come together is the beginning, to stay together is progress, and to work together is success,” he said, wishing the people a prosperous New Year and God’s manifold blessings. He reaffirmed his commitment to leading a government anchored on unity, continuity and shared prosperity.

Alleged discrepancies: NASs releases assented tax laws for public scrutiny

    • …tightens gazetting process

The leadership of the National Assembly has moved to address public concerns over the authenticity of recently passed Tax Acts by directing the Clerk to release copies of the bills transmitted to and assented by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for public scrutiny.

The Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, in a statement signed on his behalf by the Director of Information, Bullah Audu Bi-Allah, said the decision followed allegations of discrepancies between the Votes and Proceedings of the National Assembly and the gazetted versions of the Tax Acts currently in circulation.

“The leadership has directed the Clerk to make available the transmitted Tax Bills duly signed by the President, including the certificate pages, to enable members of the public independently verify the facts,” the statement said.

The National Assembly stressed that the move was in line with growing public demand for transparency and accountability in the legislative process.

Despite the intense public debate generated by the tax reforms, the legislature disclosed that only a limited number of Nigerians had formally requested Certified True Copies (CTCs) of the harmonised bills.

“Only a few requests for Certified True Copies of the harmonised Bills have been received, and all such requests have been duly processed,” the statement noted, adding that interested persons could still apply to the Office of the Clerk to the National Assembly upon payment of prescribed fees.

On the status of the gazetted Acts, the leadership explained that the Clerk is working closely with the Federal Government Printing Press (FGPP) to ensure timely publication of the duly certified and assented laws.

“These Gazettes are expected to be ready on or before January 1, 2026. While the Clerk initiates the gazetting process, the statutory responsibility for printing and publication rests with the Federal Government Printing Press,” it said.

The National Assembly also announced new procedural safeguards aimed at preventing future controversies over legislative documents.

“To strengthen institutional processes, all Bills for presidential assent will henceforth be routed through Presidential Liaison Officers, and no request for gazetting an Act will be entertained by the Printing Press unless initiated by the Clerk to the National Assembly or an authorised representative,” the statement added.

The clarification comes against the backdrop of recent tax reforms approved by the 10th National Assembly as part of the Federal Government’s wider effort to modernise Nigeria’s tax system, broaden the revenue base and improve fiscal discipline.

The National Assembly assured Nigerians that the legislature “remains committed to transparency, accountability and professionalism in the discharge of its constitutional responsibilities.”

JUST IN: Gunmen attack Ondo community, set Divisional Police station ablaze

    • …Police, Army, Amotekun deploys officers

Suspected terrorists on Wednesday night attacked Ipele community in Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State, setting the Divisional Police Station ablaze and throwing residents into panic.

It was gathered that the attackers, said to be about 20 in number, stormed the community around 10 p.m., shooting sporadically and forcing residents to flee their homes in fear.

Eyewitnesses said the assailants specifically targeted the police facility in the community, which was eventually razed during the attack.

One of the witnesses, who pleaded anonymity, described the incident as a coordinated assault.

He said the attackers operated in a commando-style manner for several hours while security personnel were reportedly overwhelmed by the intensity of the attack.

“It was a terrorist attack. The attackers, numbering about 20, came into Ipele community in a commando style and started shooting sporadically before attacking the Divisional Police Station.

“Many of us had to flee into the bush. The sounds from the attack were terrifying, and no one could withstand it,” he said.

Other residents also described the incident as horrifying, saying many people escaped into nearby bushes to avoid being harmed.

As of the time of filing this report, there was no official confirmation of casualties, although security agencies which include men of the Nigeria Police, Nigeria Army and Amotekun Corps have since been deployed to the area.

When contacted, the Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Jimoh Abayomi, confirmed the attack to the Nation in an interview but said details were still sketchy.

Abayomi added that the command would provide further information after receiving a proper briefing.

The attack has heightened fear among residents, who called on the government to strengthen security presence and protect vulnerable communities from recurring assaults.

The incident occurred barely 24 hours after the Ondo State Security Network Agency, also known as the Amotekun Corps, announced the arrest of 39 suspected terrorists in the state.

The Amotekun Commander, Adetunji Adeleye, while briefing journalists on Tuesday in Akure, said the suspects were arrested at the Elegbeka area of Ose Local Government Area after allegedly fleeing Sokoto State following United States airstrikes targeting militants linked to the Islamic State (IS) group in north-western Nigeria.

Meanwhile, the attack comes two months after a leaked memo by the Department of State Services (DSS) addressed to the 32 artillery brigade of the Nigerian Army in Akure, revealing that members of the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) are planning to carry out coordinated attacks on communities in Ondo.

The memo had stated that intelligence confirmed plans by members of ISWAP terrorist group to carry out coordinated attacks on communities in Ondo and Kogi States anytime soon.

“Some identified target locations within Ondo State include, Eriti Akoko, Oyin Akoko communities in Akoko North West LGA and Owo town in Owo LGA respectively.

“It was further gathered that the groups have commenced surveillance on potential soft targets in the above mentioned locations.

“Consequently, there is a need to scale up the level of security alertness in the various communities to forestall any untoward situation.”

Although, the state government had said leaked security memo from the DSS warning of a possible terrorist attack in the state was “part of regular intelligence reports.”

Idowu Ajanaku, the Ondo commissioner for information and orientation, had said such intelligence reports are routine and form part of ongoing efforts by security agencies to identify and prevent potential threats.

He reassured the public that the intelligence is being taken seriously, with appropriate precautions already in place to safeguard residents.

Ajanaku emphasised the importance of vigilance and cooperation between the public and security agencies to effectively respond to any threat.

Edo businessman disburses cash grants, food items to 1,500 vulnerable women

    • …we will do more next year,  Okoduwa

A renowned Edo businessman and philanthropist, Mr. Godwin Okoduwa, has disbursed cash grants and food items to over 1,500 vulnerable women, including widows and the less-privileged, as part of his social welfare and women empowerment programme.

The empowerment , which was held at the Okajiesan Town Hall, Irrua, saw each beneficiary receive ₦100,000 in cash support and a bag of rice, aimed at easing economic hardship and improving household stability.

Speaking during the event, Okoduwa said, “This is Uwesan in Esan Central. What am doing now is empowering our people; women especially. It’s a personal effort, I am not a politician. I am a businessman; infact, a trader. I feel like giving back to the society. I have been doing it, this is not my first time”.

He said the initiative was designed to enhance the social and economic welfare of the most vulnerable members of society, particularly widows who bear the burden of family survival under difficult circumstances.

His words, “The empowerment of widows and less privileged women is not just a moral duty, but a social responsibility that we take very seriously. We recognize the difficult circumstances many of these women face after losing their loved ones, including economic hardship and social exclusion,” he said.

According to him, the programme goes beyond temporary relief and is structured to restore dignity, hope, and opportunity, enabling beneficiaries to become economically self-reliant and contribute meaningfully to the development of Edo State.

“This empowerment is not just about providing financial resources, but about creating sustainable opportunities that will allow these women to support themselves and their families,” Okoduwa added.

Some beneficiaries described the intervention as timely and life-changing, noting that the support would help them expand small businesses, meet family needs, and regain confidence.

Organisers including Mrs. Okoduwa said the programme forms part of a multi-year empowerment plan, with assurances that more phases will be expanded to reach more persons.

Community leaders and stakeholders present at the event lauded the initiative for its organisation, transparency, and scale.

“The impact of this programme will not end today,” Hon. Linda Omonzele. “Empowered women change the narrative of their families and communities. Today, more than 1,500 families have a stronger chance at stability.”

“For many of us, this is not just money or rice,” said one beneficiary. “This is hope. This is opportunity to build something better for our children.”

Recipients also noted that the rice donation provided quick relief for families struggling with food costs, while the cash grant offered them flexibility to invest in petty trading, hairdressing, tailoring, farming inputs, transportation, or school fees.

Actress Moyo Lawal breaks silence on leaked tape, blames ex-partner

Actress Moyo Lawal has broken her silence on her leaked intimate tape, revealing that her former partner blamed her for the incident.

According to the actress, her ex-partner accused her of being responsible for the leak because she did not post him on her social media platforms, questioning whether she had ever posted anyone online.

Speaking in a video message, Moyo said she had previously overlooked many issues because of her easygoing and fun-loving nature, but has now decided to make a conscious change in her life.

She disclosed that she is choosing a new path rooted in virtue and personal growth, describing it as a fresh chapter with a renewed sense of purpose.

The actress invited her fans to join her on what she called a new adventure, promising a different character, outlook, and direction going forward.

She encouraged others who may have gone through similar experiences not to feel ashamed or defined by such incidents.

“To me, entertainers should be seen and not heard, and as a thespian, no matter what is happening in your reality, the show must always go on.

“There is a narrative that I posted this intimate part of my life. I refuse to allow this narrative to stick with me forever, and most importantly, I have had a few girls reach out to me who were in similar situations, and they keep telling me that they will off themselves. Some of them are being threatened, and I need them to understand that this shame is not theirs to carry, nor is it their fault. You never really know somebody until you threaten to leave them.
