Senate seeks fertiliser subsidy, commodity boards to rescue farmers from price crash

The Senate has urged the Federal Government to subsidise fertilisers and revive commodity boards to stabilise agricultural markets and protect millions of Nigerian farmers from collapsing produce prices amid soaring input costs.

The resolutions followed consideration of a motion sponsored by Senator Mohammed Danjuma Goje (Gombe Central), which highlighted the widening gap between falling farm-gate prices and the persistently high cost of inputs such as fertilisers, pesticides, and insecticides.

Goje, in the motion titled “The need to address the falling prices of agricultural produce in relation to the very high cost of farm inputs: A big problem to the livelihood of millions of Nigerian farmers,” noted that while food prices have eased nationwide, farmers are increasingly under pressure.

Leading the debate, Goje commended the Federal Government for reducing food prices through import waivers and special permissions for large-scale food importation, saying the measures had brought relief to consumers.

However, he warned that the same policies had created unintended hardship for local farmers, as cheaper imports depress prices of domestically produced food.

He observed that although produce prices continue to decline, the cost of farm inputs remains extremely high, squeezing farmers’ margins and threatening their livelihoods.

He expressed concern that the resulting market distortion has led to massive post-harvest losses, with farmers unable to sell their produce at fair or profitable rates, causing spoilage, income erosion, and serious economic setbacks in farming communities.

Lawmakers in their contributions warned that sustained declines in farm-gate prices could discourage farmers from investing in the next planting season, posing a serious risk to domestic food production, rural economic activity, and national food security.

They also cautioned that growing dependence on imported food commodities could weaken Nigeria’s food sovereignty, undermine local value chains, distort markets, and expose the economy to global price volatility and foreign exchange pressures.

In approving the first two prayers of the motion, the Senate urged the Federal Government to immediately roll out a special emergency intervention package for farmers affected by the current price collapse to cushion losses and protect household livelihoods.

It also resolved that the government should establish benchmark minimum prices for major agricultural commodities and introduce a guaranteed off-take programme, under which public agencies would purchase produce directly from farmers at agreed prices to stabilise the market.

Lawmakers stressed that such measures would effectively revive the role of commodity boards and prevent farmers from being forced to sell their produce at ruinous prices.

Beyond fertiliser subsidies, the Senate called for increased investment in storage facilities, rural roads, processing centres and irrigation systems to reduce post-harvest losses and improve farmers’ profitability.

It also urged stronger coordination among ministries, departments and agencies, state governments, commodity boards, cooperatives and other stakeholders to ensure fair pricing, efficient transportation and improved market linkages.

In addition, lawmakers asked the Federal Government to review the current import waiver and special permit regime to ensure Nigerian farm produce can compete fairly with imported alternatives, while safeguarding local producers.

Two killed, three injured in Lagos autocrash

The Lagos State traffic management authority (LASTMA) has confirmed a fatal road accident on Wednesday at Iyana Meiran, inward Meiran Road, Lagos, which has claimed the lives of two people and left three others critically injured

According to the LASTMA spokesman, Adebayo Taofiq, the tragic incident occurred near the Primary Health Centre (PHC), Meiran, when a Dangote Silo Mixer Truck reportedly lost control after suffering brake failure while speeding.

The truck subsequently rammed into a commercial mini-bus (Korope), with registration number EPP 541 YF, and four commercial tricycles (Marwa) with registration numbers KTU 360 QN, LND 444 QL, LSR 444 QN, and EKY 122 QP.

The violent impact caused extensive damage, leaving commuters trapped in crushed vehicles and twisted metal.

LASTMA operatives responded swiftly to the emergency, mobilising rescue teams to the scene. With the assistance of concerned members of the public, three severely injured victims were rescued from the wreckage and immediately evacuated for medical attention.

In line with emergency response protocols, officers from the Meiran Police Division were alerted. The Divisional Police Officer led a team to the scene to provide security support during rescue and recovery operations.

However, the driver of the Dangote Silo Mixer Truck reportedly fled the scene shortly after the crash.

The injured victims were taken to Mobonke Hospital along Meiran Road for urgent medical care, while the bodies of the two deceased persons were handed over to the Nigeria Police, who conveyed them away in an ambulance.

Reacting to the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed deep condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured victims a speedy recovery.

Mr. Bakare-Oki reiterated the agency’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property on Lagos roads, warning motorists—especially operators of heavy-duty and articulated vehicles—to ensure their cars are mechanically sound before embarking on any journey.

He also urged drivers to comply strictly with regulated speed limits, noting that excessive speeding and poor vehicle maintenance remain leading causes of fatal road accidents in the state.

LASTMA appealed to all road users to exercise caution, prioritise vehicle roadworthiness, and obey traffic regulations in the interest of public safety across Lagos State.

Queen Atang escapes injury as POP ceiling collapses at home

Former Big Brother Naija star Queen Mercy Atang has recounted a frightening incident at her home when the POP ceiling in her sitting room unexpectedly collapsed early Wednesday morning.

She credited divine intervention for her family’s safety, stating, “God said, not this family.”

In a social media post, Queen Mercy explained that she had returned home around 4 a.m. after picking up a friend from the airport, finding her sister and nanny still sewing.

She had asked her workers to sleep in the sitting room, but they had just left the area when the ceiling gave way.

This marks the second ceiling-related incident at her residence, following a garage ceiling collapse a few weeks ago.

Atang wrote, “7:58 am God said, not this family. Guys, I worked late into the night. I was at the airport picking up my girl, who just arrived in Nigeria for her Guinness World Record project. Because of the limited time we have, we had to shoot all through the night.

“I got home around 4 am. When I arrived, my kid sister was still sewing. I remember telling my workers to sleep in the sitting room and go home once it was morning. They both said they wanted to go home. The guy left, but I persuaded my girl to stay back; it’s not safe for a girl to be walking the road at night.

“By 6 am this morning, she left. Meanwhile, my younger sister and my nanny were still awake sewing. Normally, she sews till morning and then sleeps off in the sitting room. I thank God they didn’t sleep there today.

“They were still sewing when the POP ceiling fell. They both literally had to run for their lives.

“I was trying to catch a few hours of sleep before starting my day when my mum rushed in to tell me what had just happened. The first thing I asked was, “Mommy, where is Doctor @dr_brightie and my nanny?” She replied, “They’re upstairs.” My blood pressure came down immediately.

“A few weeks ago, it was my garage POP that fell; this morning it’s my sitting room. Now, in the middle of all this, I’m planning my girl’s @kosi_ani Guinness World Record project, which kicks off this Friday.

“As the coordinator of this event, my brain is literally everywhere. Figuring out how to move my family to a more comfortable space while also ensuring this project is a complete success. Dear Lord, I am grateful. Thank You for Your love and Your protection. I’m truly grateful.”

  • Customs intercepts N2.28bn from Dubai-bound Austrian national at Lagos airport

Customs intercepts N2.28bn from Dubai-bound Austrian national at Lagos airport

The Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) on Wednesday announced the interception of €651,505 and $800,575, valued at about N2.28 billion, from an Austrian national at the airport.

The suspect, identified as Kavlak Onal, an Austrian citizen, was en route to Dubai aboard Emirates Airlines on Saturday, December 13, 2025, when he was arrested by the Anti-Money Laundering Unit of the command.

Speaking with journalists, the Customs Area Controller of the command, Comptroller Chidi Nwokorie, disclosed that the suspect and the seized foreign currencies would be handed over to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for further investigation.

He urged passengers to always declare currencies, whether foreign or naira, to Customs officers, stressing that properly declared funds are not subject to seizure.

“As part of our ongoing efforts to enforce Customs regulations and collaborate with law enforcement agencies, we are handing over the following seized undeclared foreign currencies—€651,505 and $800,575, amounting to about N2,281,891,575 when converted to naira—to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

This is also a demonstration of the synergy that has existed between the two agencies, knowing that nothing gives energy to strategy like synergy.

“This interception was made at about 1445 hours on Saturday, December 13, 2025, at the Departure Terminal 2, when Mr. Kavlak Onal, an Austrian national with passport number AP0084116, who was scheduled to travel on Emirates Airline to Dubai, was asked if he had any currency to declare, and he said he did not.

“However, after a search was conducted, the amount mentioned above was discovered in his travelling bag. This contravenes extant laws which mandate all travellers, inbound and outbound, to declare foreign currencies or negotiable instruments exceeding the $10,000 threshold or its equivalent.”

Nwokorie noted that the interception was in line with existing laws empowering the Customs Service to curb illicit financial flows.

“It is worthy of note that this interception aligns with the laws and Acts which empower and confer on the Nigeria Customs Service the authority to prevent illicit financial flows and ensure strict implementation of Anti-Money Laundering obligations at all borders. These include Section 12 of the Foreign Exchange (Monitoring and Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 1995; Section 3 (3–5) of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022; and Section 55 (1) of the NCS Act, 2023.”

The Customs boss further revealed that officers of the command resisted all attempts at compromise and successfully intercepted the funds, which were about to be smuggled out of the country.

He warned that anyone who fails to declare foreign currency above the $10,000 threshold risks prosecution and forfeiture of the money to the Federal Government.

“The general public is hereby advised that carrying currency exceeding the legally approved threshold of $10,000 or its equivalent is not an offence. However, failure to declare, false declaration, or under-declaration of the prescribed amount constitutes an offence under the law.

“Therefore, I urge anyone who has nothing to hide and is engaged in legitimate business and trade to make an honest and full declaration of currency and other negotiable instruments above the $10,000 threshold at the Currency Declaration Desks in the Arrival and Departure Halls of the airport, or risk prosecution and forfeiture of the funds to the Federal Government.”

He subsequently handed over the suspect to the EFCC for further investigation and possible prosecution.

“On behalf of the Nigeria Customs Service, and with the kind permission of the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, the said passenger, Mr. Kavlak Onal, his international passport, and the undeclared currencies (€651,505 and $800,575) found on him are hereby duly handed over to the operatives of the EFCC for further necessary action.”

Responding, the Assistant Commander of the EFCC, Adejumo Richard, commended the level of inter-agency collaboration between the Customs Service and the Commission.

According to him, the EFCC would continue the investigation from where Customs stopped.

“We will pick up the investigation from where the Nigeria Customs Service stopped. We will do justice to the case and ensure a thorough investigation. I appreciate the Customs Service for the synergy that led to the interception of this huge sum of undeclared foreign currencies.”

  • Itsekiri community seeks ‘white paper implementation on Sapele lands’

Itsekiri community seeks ‘white paper implementation on Sapele lands’

    • ...Demands halt on pipelines installations

Abigborodo community in Warri North council area of Delta State, has called on the government to take a definite decision on the white paper report of their alleged ownership of Ugbekoko and Uton Iyatsere lands in Sapele council area.

The community is demanding an immediate halt to ongoing pipeline installations by Seplat Energy Plc in the area, until the company engages the community as host to its oil facilities in oil mining lease (OML) 41.

At a news conference at the community’s town hall, the people warned against deployment of security agents to intimidate or suppress their legitimate protests over its lands in Ugbekoko, Uton Iyatsere and Abigborodo.

Leaders of the community accused the company of proceeding with new pipeline projects without consultation, despite repeated petitions and documentary evidence establishing Abigborodo’s ownership of the affected lands.

They said the actions of the company were in violation of the Petroleum Industry Act of 2021 and the Host Communities Development Regulations of 2022, which mandate oil companies to engage and recognise their host communities.

Further calling on the Delta State Government to urgently implement the white paper arising from a Judicial Commission of Inquiry into the Okpe Sobo Forest Reserve, published in gazette no. 1 of 2021, they claimed it affirmed Abigborodo’s ownership of the disputed lands and made recommendations for recognition and compensation.

They also drew attention to the report of the Peace Building and Conflict Resolution Committee set up to investigate complaints against Seplat, which reportedly concluded that Abigborodo and Ugbekoko are host communities.

According to them, the failure of government to act on the committee’s findings had left the community marginalised and excluded from benefits accruing from oil operations in the area.

“The commencement of pipeline operations without resolving earlier disputes leaves much to be desired,” the community declared, warning that such actions could fuel communal crises and social unrest in the Niger Delta.

Answering questions from reporters, the chairman of the Abigborodo Management Committee, Misan Ukubehinje Esq., stated that unless SEPLAT engages meaningfully with Abigborodo, tensions could escalate.

  • CBN revokes licences of Aso, Union Homes Mortgage Banks

CBN revokes licences of Aso, Union Homes Mortgage Banks

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has revoked the operating licences of Aso Savings and Loans Plc and Union Homes Savings and Loans Plc

According to the apex bank, this is part of renewed efforts to sanitise the mortgage sub-sector and enforce strict compliance with banking laws and regulatory standards.

The CBN said the action was taken in exercise of the powers conferred on it under Section 12 of the Banks and Other Financial Institutions Act (BOFIA) 2020 and Section 7.3 of the Revised Guidelines for Mortgage Banks in Nigeria.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Acting Director of the Corporate Communications Department of the CBN, Hakama Sidi Ali (Mrs.), said the decision followed persistent regulatory breaches by the affected institutions, which undermined their safety, soundness and ability to meet obligations to depositors and other stakeholders.

According to the CBN, the two mortgage banks failed to meet the minimum paid-up share capital requirement applicable to the category of licence granted to them. The regulator also found that both institutions had insufficient assets to cover their liabilities, raising serious concerns about their solvency position.

The statement further disclosed that the banks were critically undercapitalised, with capital adequacy ratios falling below the prudential minimum prescribed by the CBN. In addition, they failed to comply with several regulatory directives and obligations issued by the apex bank over time.

“The affected institutions violated various provisions of BOFIA 2020 and the Revised Guidelines for Mortgage Banks in Nigeria,” Sidi Ali said. “These include failure to meet the minimum paid-up share capital requirement, having insufficient assets to meet liabilities, being critically undercapitalised with capital adequacy ratios below the prescribed prudential minimum, and non-compliance with several regulatory directives.”

The CBN noted that the revocation of the licences was part of a broader effort to reposition the mortgage banking segment of the financial system, strengthen confidence in the sector and ensure that only institutions with the capacity to operate in a safe and sound manner are allowed to do so.

Sidi Ali said the apex bank remains resolute in enforcing regulatory standards across all segments of the financial system in line with its statutory mandate. “The Central Bank of Nigeria remains committed to its core mandate of ensuring financial system stability,” she stated.

The CBN has, in recent years, repeatedly warned operators in the mortgage sub-sector to strengthen their capital positions, improve governance and comply fully with regulatory requirements, stressing that failure to do so would attract decisive supervisory action.
