Three family members killed in Lagos multi-vehicle crash

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed the deaths of three members of the same family, a father, mother, and their young child, following a multi-vehicle crash in the early hours of Wednesday at Secretariat inward Otedola Bridge on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.

LASTMA spokesperson Adebayo Taofiq said the accident involved an Audi, a Toyota Camry, and a Toyota Corolla. The collision was triggered when a heavily loaded truck, reportedly speeding, rammed into one of the vehicles from behind.

The impact sent the car veering out of control and crashing into two other moving vehicles, resulting in a fatal chain reaction.

According to LASTMA, the truck driver fled the scene immediately after the crash, abandoning the victims and evading arrest.

LASTMA officials arrived promptly and worked with other emergency responders to rescue trapped occupants and clear the roadway.

Two critically injured victims were pulled from the wreckage and taken by the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) to the Lagos State Emergency and Trauma Centre at Toll Gate for urgent care.

The bodies of the deceased family were recovered and handed over to the Lagos State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) for evacuation.

Security personnel from the Isheri Olowora Police Division provided support throughout the operation, while LASTMA removed the damaged vehicles from the expressway to prevent further accidents. The coordinated response also involved the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), SEHMU, LASAMBUS, and the Lagos Fire & Rescue Service.

LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki described the tragedy as “an unbearable and irreplaceable loss of an entire family,” offering prayers for the bereaved and wishing the injured a quick recovery.

Bakare-Oki lamented that the tragedy was preventable and reiterated LASTMA’s warning against excessive speeding, particularly by drivers of articulated and heavily loaded trucks.

He noted that speeding remains a major contributor to road fatalities and urged motorists to exercise caution, obey speed limits, and adopt defensive driving habits.

He reaffirmed LASTMA’s commitment to improving traffic surveillance, enforcing safety regulations, and strengthening collaboration with security and emergency agencies to prevent similar incidents.

Dogara extols General T.Y. Danjuma at 87

    • …says Nigeria is safer because of his courage

Former Speaker of the House of Representatives Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara, has celebrated elder statesman General Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma (GCON), describing him as one of the most courageous guardians of Nigeria’s unity and stability as he marks his 87th birthday.

In a tribute released in honour of the retired General, Dogara said Danjuma’s name is etched into the pillars of Nigeria’s history because of his unusual bravery, principled leadership, and lifelong commitment to the defence of national integrity.

He noted that the former Chief of Army Staff stood at the intersection of some of Nigeria’s most decisive moments and consistently acted in defence of the nation’s survival.

Dogara stated that Danjuma represents a generation of soldiers who understood that patriotism required both sacrifice and moral clarity.

According to him, the retired General’s contributions helped preserve a nation that was once on the brink, making him an enduring symbol of courage in uniform and out of service.

He emphasized that Danjuma’s post-military life expanded his impact far beyond national defence, as he transformed into a humanitarian pillar whose generosity has touched millions across the country.

He commended the T. Y. Danjuma Foundation for leading interventions in healthcare, education, emergency relief, and community support, describing it as “one of Nigeria’s most consistent engines of hope.”

Dogara further praised Danjuma’s rare boldness in public discourse, noting that the elder statesman has often spoken up when silence was the easier option. He said Danjuma’s voice has remained a moral compass for leaders, reminding them of their responsibility to the people and the dangers of drifting away from justice and accountability.

“At 86, General T. Y. Danjuma stands tall as a national sentinel,” Dogara said. “He is one of the men whose courage has shaped Nigeria’s destiny. His integrity, forthrightness, and deep sense of duty continue to guide our country at a time when clarity and courage are desperately needed.”

On behalf of the National Credit Guarantee Company Limited and in his personal capacity, Dogara prayed for good health, strength, and long life for the elder statesman.

He described him as “a patriot whose footsteps will guide generations long after this moment.”

Dogara concluded by saying that General Danjuma’s legacy is secure not only because of the battles he fought but because of the lives he continues to touch, the institutions he has built, and the truth he never hesitates to speak.

Mimiko calls for stronger laws to reduce maternal mortality, protect women’s rights

Former Governor of Ondo State, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, has urged the federal government to enact stronger laws and policies to curb preventable maternal deaths, describing maternal mortality as a violation of human rights.

Delivering the keynote address at the 2025 International Federation of Female Lawyers (FIDA) Week in Akure, Mimiko stressed the need for civil society and non-governmental organisations to hold governments accountable in translating policies into concrete actions that protect women.

Speaking on the theme, “Turning Policy to Action: Advancing Women’s Rights through Law and Governance,” he underscored the importance of judicial and social activism, referencing global trends in the enforcement of economic, social, and cultural rights, including health.

Mimiko also condemned the practice of detaining women or newborns over unpaid medical bills and reiterated that Nigeria must domesticate international covenants such as CEDAW and the Maputo Protocol to ensure effective legal enforcement.

“The global trend in many jurisdictions, even those like Nigeria without explicit provisions, is a jurisprudential shift towards justiciability of Economic, Social, and Cultural (ESC) rights, including health.

“The death of our women while trying to bring forth life in childbirth or the outrageous practice of holding them or their newborn babies as ‘collateral’ for unsettled medical bills must be ended,” the former governor said.

While acknowledging some progress, he noted gaps in implementation, including seven states yet to adopt the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act 2015 (VAPP Act), and urged support for targeted legislation like the Reserved Seats for Women Bill.

He praised Rwanda’s strides in women’s parliamentary representation, urging Nigeria to follow suit.

Mimiko also raised the alarm over rising sexual and gender-based violence, calling it a “pandemic within a pandemic” and advocating for timely prosecution, stiffer penalties, victim compensation, and a publicly accessible sex-offenders register.

He called on FIDA to champion strategic litigation on women’s rights, including maternal mortality and SGBV cases, stating, “Policy must become action, and action must deliver justice and dignity for every woman and girl.”

Remarking, the state chairperson of FIDA, Barrister Bolanle Olafunmiloye, echoed the call for increased female participation in leadership, urging women to confront corruption, drug abuse, and moral decay in society.

Also, a FIDA member and former presidential aspirant of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) highlighted the transformative role of women lawyers in leadership positions both locally and globally.

  • Mining financing key to Nigeria’s future -Shinkafi

Mining financing key to Nigeria’s future -Shinkafi

The unlocking of Nigeria’s estimated $700 billion mineral wealth is dependent on a strong and credible mining finance system, the Executive Secretary of the Solid Minerals Development Fund (SMDF), Hajiya Fatima Umaru Shinkafi has declared.

She made the declaration at the launch of the Ore Reserve Development Forum (ORDF) in Abuja.

Represented by Dr. Martina Ananaba, Head of Minerals and Project Development, Shinkafi said the sector is gaining momentum under reforms by the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, with mining’s contribution to GDP rising from less than 1 percent to 4.6 percent

But she warned that despite Nigeria’s vast resources, many mining operations are not bankable due to poor geological data, weak reporting standards, and artisanal practices.

“The real challenge is not lack of capital. The challenge is lack of bankable projects,” she said.

The Executive Secretary explained that ORDF was created after industry experts agreed in 2024 that Nigeria needs consistent ore reserve reporting, stronger technical capacity, and clear financing pathways to attract investors.

She said SMDF is already derisking early-stage projects, enforcing strict due diligence, and working with capital-market institutions to prepare credible mining companies for investment.

Highlighting recent progress, she noted that 867 mining licences issued in Q1 2025 generated ₦7 billion, signaling renewed investor confidence.

She urged stakeholders to use the workshop to design a practical Mining Finance Framework that will set standards, guide miners, and help financiers properly assess risks.

“If we build the right financing system, mining can become a true pillar of economic diversification,” Shinkafi concluded.

Chairman of the Geological Society of Nigeria, Uba Saidu Malami said Nigeria’s mineral wealth will only translate into national wealth when the country scientifically qualifies its resources to global standards

He added that mining financing largely comes from capital markets, not banks, making internationally certified reports critical for junior mining companies.

Malami also highlighted links between natural resources and insecurity, stressing the need to mitigate risks while ensuring Nigeria assigns real value to its gold, diamonds, and transition minerals through reliable exploration and reserve reporting.

In his submission, a Mining investment expert and Mont Capital executive, Jon O’Callaghan, says Nigeria could build a mining industry bigger than oil and gas within 25 years — but only if the country attracts risk capital into exploration, not just mining.

O’Callaghan said Nigeria already has the right policies in place and the Federal Government has “done its job” by creating an enabling environment.

According to him, the missing link is investor willingness to fund exploration, which is the foundation of every successful mining industry.

“It’s not about government anymore. Without exploration, there is no mining. And without risk capital, there is no exploration,” he said.

“There’s a lot of money to be made in exploration, and investors need to understand that.”

He noted that the sector’s biggest financing challenge is building a system that allows investors to participate confidently.

“To address this, he revealed that stakeholders are now working with the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to replicate global mining investment models”

He said the aim is to mirror the operational standards of the world’s top mining exchanges — the Australian Stock Exchange, Toronto Stock Exchange, and London’s AIM — in order to attract exploration funding into Nigeria.

“All we are doing is creating the same environment that works elsewhere in the world, to enable investors to invest,” O’Callaghan said.

He appreciated the organisers of the ORDF event and reaffirmed that with proper funding at the exploration stage, Nigeria’s mineral sector could surpass oil and gas within a generation.

The Technical Adviser to the Executive Secretary of the Solid Minerals Development Fund, SMDF, Mr. Abdulmajeed Amussah said the partnership between the Fund and the Ore Reserve Development Forum, ORDF, is designed to de-risk mining assets and move Nigeria’s mineral sector from informal operations to bankable, investment-ready projects.

He explained that although Nigeria is richly endowed with shallow deposits that artisans can easily mine, most of the assets are not developed to a level where they can attract formal financing.

He noted that through its mandate, the SMDF is working to provide strategic funding and technical support that convert mineral potential into shared prosperity.

According to Mr. Amussah, a recent funding window for early-stage exploration revealed major capacity gaps, as fewer than ten applications met the required standards, despite the thousands of licenses held across the country.

NAN recalls that the Special Adviser to Gov. Ahmad Aliyu on Security Matters, retired Col. Ahmad Usman and other citizens had commended the Nigerian Army for the significant success recorded against banditry in the state.

Usman said the troops had successfully neutralised several bandits in Sabon Birni Local Government Area who attempted to ambush traders travelling from Tarah village to the weekly market.

”The swift response, professionalism, and courage displayed by our military personnel averted what could have been a tragic incident and once again reaffirmed their commitment to protecting the lives and property of our people.

The source confirmed that bandits had also attacked Gatawa community, faced by local vigilance group members and a team of military men engaged them and overpowered the terrorists.

Some residents of Karawa and neighbouring villages celebrated the military’s successes and appealed for the continuation of the operation to salvage the communities from all forms of attacks.
