AFCON 2025: CAF slams Senegal, Morocco for final chaos

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has sanctioned Senegal and hosts Morocco after disorder marred the TotalEnergies AFCON 2025 final in Rabat.

CAF said its Disciplinary Board punished the Senegalese and Moroccan federations, players and officials for breaching the CAF Disciplinary Code during and after the finals..

Senegal edged Morocco 1–0 after extra time, but protests, pitch confrontations and crowd unrest followed a controversial Video Assistant Referee decision late in the match.

CAF handed Senegal coach Pape Bouna Thiaw a five-match suspension for unsporting conduct and fined him 100,000 dollars for bringing the game into disrepute.

Senegal players Iliman Ndiaye and Ismaila Sarr received two-match CAF bans for unsporting behaviour.

The Senegal federation was fined 615,000 dollars.

Morocco defender Achraf Hakimi got a two-match suspension, one suspended for a year. Midfielder Ismaël Saibari received a three-match ban and 100,000-dollar fine.

The Moroccan federation was fined 315,000 dollars for ball boys’ misconduct, VAR area invasion by officials and players, and supporters’ use of laser pointers.

CAF also dismissed Morocco’s protest alleging regulatory breaches by Senegal, ruling that the complaint lacked merit under AFCON regulations.

The final descended into chaos after a VAR-awarded penalty to Morocco triggered protests and a brief walk-off by Senegalese players, halting play for nearly 20 minutes.

Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy later saved Brahim Díaz’s penalty, before Pape Gueye scored in extra time to secure Senegal’s historic victory.

Before the sanctions, FIFA President Gianni Infantino condemned the incidents, describing the scenes as unacceptable.

“We strongly condemn the behaviour of some ‘supporters’ as well as some Senegalese players and technical staff members.

“It is unacceptable to leave the field of play in this manner,” Infantino said.

“It is unacceptable to leave the field of play in this manner, and equally, violence cannot be tolerated in our sport; it is simply not right.”

CAF said the sanctions underscored its stance on discipline, fair play and respect for match officials, closing a turbulent chapter of AFCON 2025.

Tinubu’s Türkiye visit demonstrates resolve to end insecurity — Musa

The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa, said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s engagement with his Turkish counterpart, which culminated in the signing of nine Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs), including one on defence, reflects the President’s commitment to decisively confront Nigeria’s security challenges.

“This administration is committed to equipping the Armed Forces with the right capabilities, partnerships, and technologies required to defeat terrorism, banditry, and other threats to our national stability,” the Minister said.

“Our engagements in Türkiye are practical steps toward strengthening our operational effectiveness and self-reliance.”

Tinubu’s strategic visit to Turkiye, which commenced in January 2026, is seen by defence experts as underscoring his resolve to proactively strengthen Nigeria’s defence posture, deepen international partnerships, and accelerate defence modernisation in line with the evolving security environment.

According to the Defence Minister, Tinubu’s engagement in Turkiye represents concrete measures aimed at enhancing our institutional capability and independence.

“Our engagements in Türkiye are practical steps toward strengthening our operational effectiveness and self-reliance,” he said.

During the visit, the Defence Minister and the Chief of Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, toured key pillars of Türkiye’s defence industry, including ASELSAN, Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI), and HAVELSAN, and also held several high-level bilateral defence meetings.

According to a statement by the Director Information and Public Relations of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, on Thursday, the engagements enabled the NAF to “review existing procurement arrangements focusing on optimising the procurement programmes, enhancing sustainment and maintenance support, expanding training opportunities, advancing research and development, and deepening indigenous capacity building for the Armed Forces of Nigeria.”

According to Ejodame, the visit holds direct operational benefits to enhance NAF ongoing operational efforts, particularly in the fight against terrorism, banditry, insurgency, and other asymmetric threats.

He said: “The engagements are expected to further enhance intelligence, surveillance, precision engagement, and close air support capabilities critical to joint operations across theatres. These outcomes align squarely with the CAS’s mission objective of building a more agile, lethal, and technology-driven air force.”

According to the NAF’s spokesperson, the CAS reaffirmed the NAF’s unwavering commitment to national security.

“The Nigerian Air Force remains resolute in delivering smarter air power for safer communities. This strategic engagement reinforces our capacity to support ground forces more effectively, dominate the air domain, and decisively degrade threats confronting our nation,” he quoted the Air Marshal Aneke as saying.

Enugu rallies town unions for peace, grassroots governance

The Enugu State Government has reaffirmed the strategic importance of town unions in grassroots governance, describing them as indispensable partners in community administration, peacebuilding and sustainable local development.

The government also charged Presidents-General of town unions across the state to promote peace in their communities and resist any attempt to use their offices to foment discord or destabilisation.

The charge was given by the Commissioner for Chieftaincy Matters, Dr. Charles Egumgbe, during his maiden official meeting with town union Presidents-General at the ministry in Enugu on Wednesday.

Egumgbe, whose portfolio includes oversight of town unions, said Governor Peter Mbah had mandated the ministry to strengthen traditional and community governance structures in line with the administration’s development agenda.

He explained that the core responsibilities of the ministry include the formulation and implementation of policies on chieftaincy matters, the creation of autonomous communities, village integration, and the establishment and supervision of palace courts for effective dispute resolution.

Other functions, he said, cover the registration and regulation of chieftaincy constitutions, town unions, social clubs and community-based organisations, as well as policies aimed at strengthening traditional institutions and improving community governance.

According to the commissioner, town unions remain central to infrastructure development, social stability and effective grassroots administration across the state.

“There is a need to partner with Governor Peter Mbah, whose political philosophy and governance style have become a visible game-changer in Enugu State. No sector of development is paused,” he said.

Egumgbe described town unions as critical agents of community development, noting that they serve as grassroots administrative and self-regulating structures that promote infrastructure such as roads and schools, maintain social harmony and function effectively as a fourth tier of governance.

He, however, stressed that town union leaders must take responsibility for peace and order in their communities, lamenting the volume of petitions received by the ministry over avoidable communal conflicts.

The commissioner frowned at attempts by some individuals to hijack community leadership without due process or proper stakeholder engagement.

“Presidents-General must ensure peace and tranquillity in their communities. It is time to do the right thing and uphold responsible leadership,” he added, while assuring town unions that the state government would give due consideration to their welfare.

Responding on behalf of the town unions, the Chairman of the Enugu State Council of Presidents-General of Town Unions, Hon. Chief Arinze Nnia Ogbodo, commended Governor Mbah for what he described as visible and far-reaching development across the state.

Ogbodo said the engagement had strengthened the confidence of town union leaders in the ministry and pledged their continued support for the administration’s development agenda.

“This engagement is very important to us. With the new commissioner overseeing the ministry that relates directly with town unions, our confidence has been reinforced. We will continue to support His Excellency to achieve his vision for the people of Enugu State,” he said.

Also speaking, the Presidents-General of Ikpamodo Autonomous Community in Igbo-Eze North LGA, Mr. Christian Ugwuanyi; Okorouba-Ozalla Autonomous Community in Nkanu West LGA, Hon. Chukwunonso Igwe; and Mgbagbu Owa in Ezeagu LGA, Ozo Chibuike Okafor, pledged their support for the commissioner and the Mbah administration.

They praised the governor’s inclusive development approach, noting that key initiatives such as Smart Green Schools and modern healthcare centres were having positive impact across communities and electoral wards in the state.

Oyo APC urges calm over technical hitches on e-registration

Oyo All Progressives Congress (APC) has appealed to members and supporters who have encountered few challenges in their efforts to participate in the ongoing electronic registration of members across the state.

The party assured that the technical hitches would be resolved in no time as they were being attended to by the relevant authorities.

Reports from across the 33 local government councils indicated that large population of party faithful, consisting of old and new members, were yet to have their personal data captured by officials in their domains largely due to technical issue.

The development has raised agitation for an extension of the registration deadline among the leaders and members of the Party.

But a statement by Oyo APC  Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare, disclosed that the decision to make National Identification Number (NIN) and Permanent Voter Card (PVC) compulsory for members was to enable the party to have accurate and reliable membership record and personal data for the purpose of strategic planning and compliance with the global best practices.

He said: “We are not unawares of some glitches in the electronic registration exercise particularly as they concern the inability of many willing party faithful and supporters to have their personal data captured as well as lack of National Identification Number (NIN) by some individuals who are willing to register as APC members.

“The leadership of the APC is working round the clock to resolve some of these issues before the registration deadline this Saturday.

“We have also received requests for extension of the registration deadline from many quarters across the state and we have communicated this to the National Secretariat of our great Party while we are hoping to get a favorable response as soon as possible.

“Nonetheless, stakeholders are being charged to increase their efforts and ensure that nothing is left to chances. The E-regisration is a serious exercise and Oyo state chapter of the Party cannot afford to lag behind.

“As a matter of fact, old members and leaders who fail to register in the ongoing exercise would cease to be reckoned with in the scheme of things as we warm up for the congresses and party primaries in the build up to the next general elections.

“We are on top of the situation even as we encourage party faithful and supporters to reach out to the State Secretariat at Oke-Ado to report any challenges in their locality for prompt actions.”

We never begged for money to bury Omije Ojumi – Family

The family of late gospel singer Bunmi Akinnaanu, also known as Omije Ojumi, has denied reports of a crisis over her burial arrangements.

The family claimed that the decision to cancel the initial burial plans was due to disagreements with members of the gospel music community who proposed to organise the rites.

Mr. Femi Eretan, the singer’s brother-in-law, stated that the family wants to handle the burial independently to ensure a dignified farewell for Omije Ojumi.

Eretan explained that the family head, Mr. Wale Akinnaanu, initially agreed to the proposal by gospel artistes to hold the burial within a week, considering his health and the emotional weight of the situation.

However, further consultations led to a change of plan, with the family deciding to handle the burial themselves.

The family also denied soliciting funds for the burial, with Eretan warning that legal action will be taken against anyone spreading false claims.

“I am from Ondo State and I understand the rudiments of the law. Anyone who claims the family begged for burial funds must provide proof,” he said.

The new burial arrangements include a service of songs, candlelight night, and artiste night on January 28, with interment on January 29.
