  • Buhari denounces Kaduna school of torture

    • Says free, compulsory education is panacea to child abuse
    • Officials search for parents of some students
    • Police hand over freed inmates to Kaduna govt for rehabilitation

President Muhammadu Buhari on Saturday condemned the alleged torture and child abuse of students at an Islamic centre at Rigasa, Kaduna, which the police raided on Thursday.

Over 300 adults and children, many of whom were chained by the authorities of the school, were freed by the police.

State officials have been busy over the last 48 hours trying to locate the parents of some of the children.

The Police, who have been holding the inmates in protective custody since Thursday, handed them over to the Kaduna State Government yesterday for rehabilitation.

Buhari condemned rights abuses in the country whether of adults or children.

He hailed the police for their “discovery of this horrific hub and arrest of suspected operators of the unedifying, so-called reform institution.”

He added: “We are glad that Muslim authorities have dismissed the notion of the embarrassing and horrifying spectacle as Islamic School.

‘‘The place has indeed been described as a house of torture and a place of human slavery.”

But the president declared that the panacea to child abuse lies in education, saying   children “will be safeguarded from roaming the streets and protected from all evil influences that assail idle hands and idle minds, when they are sent to school.”

Garba Shehu, the president’s spokesman recalled how Buhari, while inaugurating the National Economic Council for the year 2019/2023 at in Abuja, warned that keeping children away from school was a criminal offence.

“He also stressed the need to take seriously and enforce the statutory provisions on free and compulsory basic education, citing Section 18(3) of the 1999 Constitution as amended, which he says places on all of us ( public leaders and political office holders ) an obligation to eradicate illiteracy and provide free and compulsory education.

‘‘He added that Section 2 of the Compulsory Free Universal Basic Education Act provides that every government in Nigeria shall provide free, compulsory and universal basic education for every child of primary and junior secondary school age.

“It is indeed a crime, he stressed, for any parent to keep his child out of school for this period.

‘‘While the government at the center has introduced a number of programmess, including the school feeding programme which is now in 32 states in the country, with 9.8 million children in its roll to encourage school enrolment and enhance the health and learning capabilities of pupils, State and local governments are obliged under the law to ensure that every child of school age goes to school throughout the crucial nine years of basic education.

‘‘To stop unwanted cultural practices that amount to the abuse of children, our religious and traditional authorities must work with the federal, state and local governments to expose and stop all types of abuse that are widely known but ignored for many years by our communities.’’

Officials in Kaduna State have been busy since Thursday trying to locate the parents of some of the freed inmates of the centre for reunion.

The police particularly asked families from Ghana, Mali and Burkina Faso to come and pick their wards freed from the centre.

However, some of the parents did not wait to be contacted before rushing to the centre to see their children.

Some others went to the centre on Friday to register their disapproval of the police action.

They said they willingly sent the children to the place for education and rehabilitation for the deviants among them.

They disagreed with the police that the students were being   tortured or sexually abused at the centre.

    Police handover rescued children

The Kaduna State Police Command said yesterday that it had handed over to the state government the 300 inmates of the centre.

The Command Public Relations Officer, DSP Yakubu Sabo told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the over 300 inmates were handed over to the state government on Friday for reunion with their families.

He, however, said that seven suspects earlier arrested were undergoing investigations.

The PPRO defended the police raid on the centre, saying it was based on reports of torture and abuse, not whether the inmates were willingly taken there by their parents.

“Whether or not they were the ones who handed their children over, there is limitation to what can be done to human beings, even by parents.

“According to law, even if it is the father that subjected his child to inhuman treatment, there is a level where he will be held liable for his action.

“Nobody is questioning whether the parents took their children there, what we are saying is that inhuman treatment is meted out to those children in violation of the law.

“The school in question has no license to operate as well. The agencies of government that are supposed to supervise them are not put into consideration. As far as we know, they have not tendered any document to show that they are licensed.

“The school is concurrently running both educational and correctional programmes which are supposed to be different institutions with different licenses.

“If you have license to give correctional program, that in itself does not give you order to do educational program.

“Even if you are licensed, it does not give you the right to go ahead without having the required manpower and skills to carry out the programme.  All these are not there.”

A parent, Maryam Fatika, who had four of her children at the school told The Nation on Friday that “there was nothing going wrong in the school because we took our children there willingly.”

“We don’t know why the police raided the place,” she said, adding: “My children have never complained to me about abuse or anything. But we are aware that they were punished if they did something wrong because they are very dangerous and stubborn children.”

Another parent, whose son has been a student there  for six years said :”The boy became a threat to us his parents so we took him to the Islamiyya school for rehabilitation and to God be the glory, he has changed.

“I used to take food to him and I have never seen anything wrong going on in the school.

“My worry now is that we don’t even know where they took our children to which is why we are appealing to the government and the police to return our children to us.

“We are also okay with the way the children are being handled by the Islamiyya authorities.”

Hajiya Shafa’atu Zakari who has   six children in the school said her children were drug addicts who had gone out of control at home hence her decision to take them to the centre.

Her words: “we took the children to the school because we didn’t know what to do with them. “Four of my children were among the students evacuated by the police. We demand their release because the founder of the school Malam Ismail is doing everything possible within Islamic teaching to rehabilitate them for us.”

  • Five RRS operatives arrested for alleged extortion of N5,000

Five policemen attached to the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Lagos State Police Command had been arrested over alleged extortion of N5,000 from a woman.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the RRS said through its Twitter handle that the men were arrested on Friday in Ajah area of the state.

“Our officers at Ajah extorted N5,000 from a lady; our Ops officers went in search, arrested and detained them at Alausa Headquarters of the squad.

“They will be transferred to the headquarters on Monday for trial,” the RRS twitted.

The squad, however, did not state what led to the extortion and if the money collected was recovered.

In response to NAN queries on cases of impersonation of RRS operatives, it said that all RRS operatives must wear official badges on sleeves and their name tags on the breast of their shirts.

It stressed that the public could also identify white vehicles of RRS operatives with red and blue stripes and “RRS” boldly inscribed on the body of the vehicles, motorcycles and Armored Personnel Carriers (APC).

  • No cold war in the Presidency -APC, Govs.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) and its governors have dismissed recent allegations of a cold war within the Presidency as mere rumour and another scheme of opposition mischief makers.

There have been media reports and allegations in the political space of a festering sour relationship between President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo in the last few days, indicating that handlers of the president had demanded the resignation of the vice president.

However, during separate media engagements in Abuja on Thursday, the Progressive Governors’ Forum and the national secretariat of the ruling APC dismissed the insinuation, stating that more recent events had proven such as invalid claims.

Speaking during the inauguration of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) Steering Committee on Media and Communication, Lagos Governor, who is also the chairman of the committee, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, said the alleged face-off in the Presidency was just ‘gossip’.

The governor, who was represented by his deputy, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, explained that the Buhari/Osinbajo administration has carried on with its normal duties in the last few days, despite the alleged bad-blood.

“There is no crack. It is in the realm of gossips. By the time they said that, the Vice Presieent went to Zimbabwe to represent this country. It was the prerogative of the president but he nominated him.

“Like I said earlier, it is in the realm of gossips because only on Wednesday, the Vice President presided over the Federal Executive Committee (FEC) meeting which is the highest decision making body in the country. So, we don’t listen to rumours. We deal with facts and the fact is that they are working together. So, it is all rumour  and don’t take it that serious,” he said.

Meanwhile, the ruling APC during a media conference at its national secretariat in Abuja, squarely placed the blame for the spread of what it described as “fallacy” on the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP), noting that the ruling party would not abandon its serious national assignments to pay attention to what is not important.

According to the National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu: “We have important issues of governance than to continue to respond to fallacies. How do you determine a crack?

“The vice president had been sent out to represent the President at an international event, after PDP saw a crack; the Vice President presided over the FEC meeting just on Wednesday. Is that part of the PDP’s crack? Let us stop this joke. We know we have challenges in this country, let us face these challenges,” he said.

Addressing other issues, Issa-Onilu also accused the PDP of being responsible for some other recent activities, which had been attributed to leaders of the APC, one of which he said was erection of campaign billboards and printing of campaign posters, purportedly in preparation for the 2023 elections.

According to him, the APC is currently preoccupied with solving the myriad of challenges facing the country as well as working to fulfill her campaign promises to Nigerians, adding that the party does not have any room for election thoughts at the moment, but that those who want to distract the party from its task of providing leadership will use anything to do so.

“As a party, we want to state clearly that having won elections convincingly and having been given the mandate to run government for the next four years, our major and only focus now is governance.

“We are not engaging in any other activity a out 2023 elections and wherever you see such (posters) you can be sure it is from mischief makers and of course we know it is part of the strategy of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to continue to take actions to cause distractions for the governing party from focusing on anything that is important to the people of Nigeria which is to deal with the challenges that we are all faced with; the challenges of governance, security, economy and corruption as well as other associated issues. That is what we are focused on.

“So, as a party, we understand that the social contract we have signed with the people of Nigeria with the renewal of our mandate. Whatever poster you might have seen about any of our leaders anywhere in this country is irrelevant to us, we do not have a hand in it and it is not from those leaders. It is strictly part of the strategy of a party that is supposed to provide alternative to our governance model and since they do not have such, the only thing they can do is to continue to throw spanners into the works,” he said.

  • 100 get free surgeries courtesy SHIN

Another 100 Nigerians will benefit from surgeries sponsored by Samsung Heavy Industries Nigeria (SHIN) Limited.

The latest intervention is coming after a similar gesture a year ago for 102 patients.

The annual intervention takes place from October 1-4 at the LASUTH hospital in Lagos.

All patients will be expected to be cured from cataracts and some patients would be seeing clearly for the first time since being diagnosed with with the condition.
SHIN has emphasised that the annual event is open to all with limited spaces but especially caters for the most vulnerable people in the communities and aims to eradicate cataracts in as many Nigeria’s as possible.

According to the World Health Organisation Cataracts accounts for 51% of World Blindness, making this annual event by SHIN a truly worthwhile cause.
SHIN’s new gesture is coming exactly one month after the company donated electrical equipment, clothing and other relief materials to the victims of herdsmen and Boko Haram insurgents’ attacks in Jos, Plateau State.

A missionary group from Korea had constructed a school in Jos for the villagers in Rhizha where four missionaries were teaching about 560 children and also providing counselling to victims, mostly women, suffering from the trauma from Boko Haram insurgents’ attacks.

However, these acts of violence did not deter the missionary from creating this initiative to assist the community.

Since 2015, Samsung has worked with Vision Care in the yearly Eye Camp to give free cataract surgeries to individuals who cannot afford the treatment.

SHIN said in a statement on Friday that the medical team that will carry out this year’s eye surgeries is expected from the United States, Republic of Korea, Nigeria and Ethiopia.

“The medical volunteer team consist of doctors, nurses, volunteers from USA, Republic of Korea, Nigeria and Ethiopia.

“The team will carry out cataract procedures for children and adult who are in need for the surgery,” the statement said.

“We are targeting to provide procedures for at least 100 patients. Among the target, we are hoping to carry out the procedure for at least 10 children with cataract,” the statement said.

The statement added that the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Nigeria, In-tae Lee would be participating in the event in support of the company’s CSR initiative.

  • Alleged $8.4m, N4b fraud: Court insists Pinnick, others must appear

A Federal High Court in Abuja has insisted on the appearance of the President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Amaju Pinnick and four others to answer to a pending criminal charge against them.

Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu gave the order yesterday  at the resumed hearing in the charge brought against them by the Federal Government, through the now disbanded Special Presidential Investigation Panel (SPIP) on the recovery of public property.

Those charged with Pinnick are NFF Secretary, Sanusi Mohammed; the 1st Vice-President, Seyi Akinwumi; the 2nd Vice-President, Shehu Dikko and an Executive member, Yusuff Fresh.

Pinnick and others are, in the charge 17-count charge, marked FHC/ABJ/CR/93/2019,  accused among others, of misappropriation of $8,400,000 belonging to the football body.

The money was said to have been paid by the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) to the NFF as appearance fees in the group state of the Russia 2018 World Cup.

They are also accused of “moving dishonestly and intentionally the sum of about N4bn” belonging to the NFF without the consent of the NFF.

When the case was called on Thursday, the defendants were absent, despite the court’s order of July 1, 2019 for bench warrant compelling the defendants to appear on the next adjourned date.

SPIP’s lawyer,  Celsius Ukpong drew the court’s attention to the fact that his agency, (the SPIP)  has been shut down  on the directive of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Ukpong said, because of the development and subsequent directive by the President, SPIP’s activities and functions  have been transferred to the office of the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF).

He added that part  of the SPIP’s activities transferred to the AGF was the case file containing the Pinnick and others’ charge and related processes.

Ukpong said: “It was the panel that file the charges. But, we have been disbanded and President Buhari directed us to handover all our activities to the office of the AGF.

” In view of the new development, we believe that the office of the AGF will do justice to this matter.”

A lawyer, who said he was from the AGF’s office, Abubakar Musa confirmed Ukpong’s explanation, but said he believed the case file was in transition to the office of the AGF, following the closure of the SPIP by the President.

After listening to the lawyers, Justice Ojukwu expressed displeasure at the defendants’ absence.

She noted that it was a slight on the court for its order to be ignored by the defendants, and threatened to excuse herself from the case.

The judge noted that had the defendants been in court, she would have excused them in view of the absence of a competent prosecution counsel before the court.

The judge thereafter, adjourned until November 5, 2019, but insisted that the defendants must attend court.

  • 17th World Athletics Championship: Oduduru, Okagbare lead Team Nigeria challenge in Doha

Team Nigeria will be the focus of attention from today as the chase for medals and tickets to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics begin at the 17th World Athletics Championships in Doha, Qatar.

According to the world athletics body, International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), 209 out of the 214 member federations will be participating in the Championships as well as an Athlete Refugee Team-all numbering a total of 1,972 final entries (1054 men and 918 women).

Meanwhile, Nigeria would  be aiming to break  a six-year old jinx without medal since Blessing Okagbare won silver and bronze respectively  in  the 200m and long jump events at the 2013 World Championships in Moscow.

The iconic Khalifa International Stadium will host the 10-day championship as $7.5m (N2.6b) will be at stake for record setters and finalists in some events.

However, if the performance of Team Nigeria at the 2019 African Games is taken into consideration, some athletes would expectedly  mount  the podium  in Doha.

Already, four Nigerians including  Blessing Okagbare, Divine Oduduru, Ese Brume and Tobi Amusan have been  tipped as potential medallists by IAAF in its preview of the competition and this a pointer to the  recognition of the athletes at the global level.

Incidentally, the prowess of Team Nigeria has never been in doubt and as recent as the 12th African Games in Morocco in August, the track and field events  fetched Nigeria 23 medals made up of 10 gold, seven silver and six bronze medals.

“We  are hopeful of a good showing in Doha ,” Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) technical director, Sunday Adeleye, told NationSport. “After  the African Games in Morocco, we told the athletes to continue with their training  programme because we wanted  to sort out so many things that may cause distraction during the World Championships.

“I am happy to inform you that we have sorted all these particularly in terms of equipment and kits and we believe this will give the athletes the needed concentration  and confidence to do well in Doha.”

Despite the criticisms that trailed the 25-man list, Adeleye said that selected athletes were the best the country could present while urging those irked by the list to support the team in its quest to pick medals and Olympic tickets.

Apart from the women who have been making the country proud, the performance of the likes of Oduduru, Raymond Ekevwo and a host of other male athletes has given hope for the country.

In the women’s 100 and 200m, Okagbare has been considered a threat to some favourites. The 30-year-old, who took bronze in the event at the 2013 World Championships, has pieced together a decent season, headed by a notable 22.05s win at the Prefontaine Classic in 200m.

In the men’s 200m, favourite American Noah Lyles will have to contend with 22-year-old Divine Oduduru who has succeeded as NCAA champion. Oduduru, who won the collegiate 200m title in June this year in a championship record of 19.73, the third fastest recorded this year.

Oduduru is the second fastest man in 100m and after a pair of sub-10 performances early this year, Oduduru won the NCAA 100m title in 9.86 and doubled back to take the 200m crown in a blazing 19.73secs. Oduduru clearly has the ability to work his way into the medal mix, but the question that remains is how heavy a toll his early season collegiate racing schedule has taken on World Championships form.

Also considered a major force in 100m is 20-year-old Nigerian Raymond Ekevwo, who blasted to a 9.96 personal best to take the 2019 African Games title in August.

  • Sand Eagles’ ex-captain raps NFF over unpaid allowances

Former captain of the Nigeria national beach soccer team (Super Sand Eagles), Isiaka Olawale, has appealed to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to pay their entitlement for attending the 2017 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup in Bahamas.

Olawale, who made four FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup appearances for Nigeria, claimed  all efforts to make the country’s football ruling body come to their plight following their group stage exit from the tournament two years ago have proved abortive.

“It has not been easy for us to get what we worked for and since we came back from Bahamas, up till now that I am talking to you, they have not paid us our entitlements which should be around N600,000 for each player,” Olawale told Nations.“ We were 12 players and about five officials  that attended the tournament.

“But  If they want us to carry placards, we will do that. A member of the team, Ogbonnaya Okemiri still asked me about the allowance two days ago. For how long will I continue to pacify them?As the captain, I tried to control the players because everything is on my neck.”

Olawale  said he had  repeatedly reached out to the leadership of the NFF including several messages to its President Amaju Pinnick,  First Vice President Seyi Akinwunmi ,Second Vice President Shehu Dikko as well as the NFF Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi but all to no avail.

“We met NFF President, Amaju Pinnick on our arrival into the country in 2017 and he assured us that our entitlements will be taken care of,” the former Kwara United, Dolphins and El-Kanemi Warriors player further told NationSport. “It’s just for Pinnick to give the directive for the money to be paid but up till now we have not heard from the federation.

“I have spoken with NFF First Vice President, Seyi Akinwunmi and he assured us that the money will be paid. I have sent messages to Second Vice President, Shehu Dikko,  NFF Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi and so many of them but up till now, no response.”

But  NFF’s Director of competitions, Bola Oyeyode told our correspondent that he was not aware of the issue.

“I am not aware, I over see so many teams. It is the secretary of the team, Sunday Okayi, who will be in better position to answer if they have been paid or not. I didn’t see any complaint from any player on my table,” he told NationSport.
