  • Fasoranti’s daughter’s death probe ‘poor’

Yoruba group Afenifere spokesman Yinka Odumakin, has criticised the police over what it called poor handling of investigations on the murder of Mrs Funke Olakunrin, daughter of its leader, Chief Rueben Fasoranti.

According to the Publicity Secretary of the group, Yinka Odumakin who spoke with reporters after a meeting at the Akure home of Fasoranti, the inability of the police to fish out the killers of Mrs Olakunrin by now showed that the matter was poorly handled by the police.

He said, “It is now over two months that Mrs Olufunke Olakunnrin, the daughter of Afenifere leader, Chief Reuben Fasoranti was murdered around Ore  in Ondo State and we are compelled to speak out over the lackadaisical attitude of the police over the gruesome assassination.

“The younger brother of the deceased, Kehinde Fasoranti had stated openly a day after the incident that the police in Ore told him his sister was killed by Fulani herdsmen when he went to collect her body the day she was killed and challenged the police to bring out the statement he wrote at their station.

“They have not contradicted him till date.

“The first sign we got that there was no attempt to launch any serious investigation into  the murder was when the car in which she was killed was released to the family from Ore police station the day after the murder without any forensic investigation into the most prized evidence at the scene of the crime.

“It was when we engaged the police high command that they came to pick the car six days later. The car has now been returned to the family with no report on the examination report.”

The group emphasised that there was no attempt to carry out any autopsy on the corpse until they demanded it from the police before the burial, saying,  ”only that was carried out and only that report was given to the family when they went to collect the car.

“Beyond this, the police have not made any  briefing to the family on their investigations into this dastardly act.

“There are other bizarre developments that worry us on police investigations into this murder .

“For instance, the driver of the car in which Mrs Olakunrin was killed has not been asked a question by the police till date.”

“All the above put together suggest to us clearly that the police have not done any serious investigations into this murder .And it worries us that we are seeing all the signs of lethargy that usually attend high profile murders with powerful masterminds in our country”.

Afenifere therefore called on all  those who respect human lives in Nigeria and across the world to join  in asking the police where are the killers of Mrs Olakunrin.

  • OPC can tackle security in Southwest, says Gani Adams

Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Otunba Gani Adams, has assured the police of his support in strengthening the security architecture in the Southwest geo-political zone.

Adams also pledged to consolidate on the confidence reposed in him by state governors in the Southwest and the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu.

Adams, who spoke during a courtesy visit to the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Zubairu Muazu, at the weekend, commended the force for extending a hand of fellowship to the Oodua Peoples Congress, a pan-Yoruba socio-cultural group under his watch.

He noted that the partnership between the police and OPC was beginning to yield positive results, with other relevant groups coming on board as partners in progress.

Adams said he had received the nod of the Inspector General of Police on security matters within the Southwest axis, adding that efforts were underway to map out effective security modalities to fight insecurity in the states.

Part of the efforts, Adams said, was the convocation of the Southwest Security Stakeholders’ Group (SSSG), a meeting comprising all relevant security groups across southwest and the unveiling of a roadmap towards achieving set objectives.

Adams said: “So far, we have made significant progress since the IGP had expressed the readiness of the police to work with OPC under my leadership. It is on this note that I said OPC and the Nigeria Police are partners in progress. We have started work in earnest and everybody can attest to the fact that our efforts are beginning to yield positive results.

“It is obvious that the rate of insecurity in the Southwest has reduced tremendously in the past few weeks. We have set the pace and the signs are there for everybody to see that we are ready to secure the Southwest and make the region safe for Nigerians.”

In his response, Muazu, noted that the foundation laid by his predecessors had helped in working out a synergy between the police and the people at the grassroots.

The Lagos police boss said: “In recent times, the spate of insecurity has taken the centre stage across the country. However, I want to assure you that we are committed to providing the best security to Lagosians. We are committed to making the state safe for residents, and in doing our job, we are ready to partner with individuals or groups that can help the police curb the spate of insecurity in Lagos and Nigeria as a whole.

”We all know that information dissemination is key at all times, and the police are in the best position to dissect the information gathered. So, I think Gani Adams’ visit is timely and a sign that things are taking good shape in the country.”

  • Free commercial activity begins on Lagos-Ibadan speed train

Commercial activity may begin on the Lagos-Ibadan Standard Gauge latest November, the  Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi has said.

Amaechi spoke on Monday when he and the Minister of State for Transportation Gbemi Saraki, led other stakeholders on tour of the project.

He said the federal government will also begin a free trial service between Lagos and Ibadan for commuters.

He said: ”Our ambition is that by November we should begin trial of train services between Lagos and Ibadan for free.”

He admitted however that the pace of the project had been slow, adding that there is need for the contractor to increase the pace of the project.

”They (Contractor) need to increase their speed. They reduce their speed within the period that the government dissolved the last cabinet.

“Now, that we are back, my colleague, the Minister of State, and I resolve to decide to push back the pressure to ensure they stick to the completion timelines,” Amaechi said.

The minister disclosed that the double lane speed tracks had been laid up to kilometre 155, adding that where the project is recording challenge now is the completion of the stations, which according to him was impeded because the cabinet was not in place.

“The tracks are no longer the problem, the problem now, is how to get them to finish the stations on time.

According to him, CCECC had promised to complete all the minor stations in three months, but unfortunately, six months after they are yet to be completed.

The minister added that  he will continue to put pressure on the contractor to ensure that all the minor stations were completed in due course.

“We know that by January next year, they are going to finish both the minor and major stations so that we can move on,” Amaechi said.

Speaking on the Railway University and the manufacturing factory projects, Amaechi said while the Ministry of Transportation has secured a date for the ground breaking ceremony for the factory, from the Vice President, it is waiting for the President to return from the UNGA to give a date for the ground breaking ceremony for the University of Transportation project.

He also said the government is waiting on the Chinese government and the China Eximbank for the loan for Ibadan-Kano standard gauge line.

He said the Federal Government is ready with its own counterpart funding, but will require the Chinaexim bank to grant the facility for the project to begin.

Saraki expressed happiness that the Ministry of Transportation is delivering on the vision of President Muhammadu Buhari to make the train the backbone of the nation’s economy.

She said once the speed train fully come on stream it would be able to unlock the huge potentials of the sector to create jobs for the teeming Nigerian youths.

Saraki, who supervises the Maritime sector of the Transportation Ministry, said she is determined to work with other stakeholders to unlock the potentials and opportunities of the maritime sector.

  • ‘I stole baby because I wanted male child’

THE 39-year-old suspect blamed it on her hunger for a male child. Police in Ekiti State picked up Mercy Momoh accusing her of stealing a two-month-old baby in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital.

Momoh, who hails from Edo State, was arrested on Saturday at her residence located at Odo-Aremu area, along old Governor’s Office in the state capital.

The baby was stolen from his mother, Mrs Funmilayo Sunday on Friday around 1pm at the State Secretariat.

It was gathered that the suspect tricked the baby’s mother into following her to the State Secretariat ostensibly to collect some relief materials being given by government to flood victims.

The suspect, on getting there, sent the baby’s mother to buy phone airtime for her, and then ran away with the baby before his mother returned.

Police command spokesperson, Caleb Ikechukwu confirmed the suspect was arrested on Saturday, adding that investigation was ongoing.

He said, “It is confirmed that the woman who stole two-month-old baby has been arrested by the operatives of the Ekiti police command.

“She was apprehended through intelligence made available to the police and would be prosecuted after conclusion of investigation.

“Investigation is still on going. More details will come to reveal what really transpired.”

“We call on members of the public to be careful when dealing with strangers. The suspect was apparently nice to the victim, that was why she got the baby easily. Citizens should not be carried away by kind strangers,” Ikechukwu said.

A source said the police were informed of the incident by the baby’s mother on the same day, at about 4.30pm.

Police detectives moved in,  tracing the suspect to her residence, where she was arrested around 11pm.

According to her, the suspect confessed that she stole the baby because of her dire need of a male child.

The suspect claimed that due to her inability to bear a male child, her husband got married to another woman and may likely throw her out of the house.

The source added that the Commissioner of Police, Amba Asuquo, has directed that the matter to be thoroughly investigated.

  • Ooni to install Kessington Oodole Oodua

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Eniitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, is set to install a business magnate and Lagos socialite, Sir Adebutu Adebukunola Kessington, as the Odole Oodua.

The conferment of the chieftaincy title on Kessington, popularly called Dodondawa, is the first by Oba Ogunwusi since his ascension to the throne as the 51st Ooni about four years ago.

According to a statement by the Ooni’s Director of Media and Public Affairs, Moses Olafare, the chieftaincy conferment will take place on October 19, 2019 at the Ile-Oodua, the Ooni’s palace, Ile-Ife.

The statement read in part: “The Odole is a special office, which works closely with the Ooni in rallying the descendants of Oduduwa wherever they are in the world for unity, peace and progress of the race. The Odole Oodua, a position once occupied by the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo and subsequently by Chief G.O.K. Ajayi, is a highly revered chieftaincy in Yorubaland, pioneered by the great Oranmiyan while he was still a prince of Ife.

“Oranmiyan served as a rallying point and stabilising force among the powerful empires within the expansive Oduduwa territory before becoming the Ooni in Ife, after his exploits which cut across Benin and Oyo kingdoms, where he established his royal dynasties which have been in existence till date.”

Read Also: Where is Ooni’s ex-wife, Olori Wuraola?

“Historically, the office has its roots in the remarkable roles played by the Oranmiyan, the great ruler of old Oyo and Benin kingdoms. Oranmiyan was virile, bold, adventurous, circumspect, dutiful and at the service of his other siblings. He stood as an effective link between them. It was his commitment to a united Oduduwa family that is referenced in the fragment of his panegyric, “akantunkansi or as’otuns’osi, akinn’ile akinl’ogun” (the great link to both sides, the brave both at home and at war).

“Even though both Benin and Oyo kingdoms were at a point most powerful domains within the expansive Oduduwa territory, Oranmiyan ensured that they never overran each other. Etymologically, “Odole” derives from the expression “odo ile Oodua” (the youth in the house of Oduduwa). It is a contraction of the expression adopted as a title to perpetuate the ideal of internal cohesion for which Oranmiyan stood in the Oodua family of the ancient days.

“The traditional title of the Odole of Ife has been retained as part of Ife’s social and political system and specially conferred on distinguished Oodua descendants, who in present times can replicate the roles played by the Oranmiyan.

The statement added: “In the contemporary history of the Oodua people, the late sage, Chief Jeremiah Obafemi Awolowo, who later held the title of Asiwaju Ile-Oodua, which has since been left unfilled till date, was the first to be honoured with the title after Oranmiyan. The second holder of the title was the late Chief G.O.K. Ajayi (SAN). Sir Adebutu Adebukunola Kessington is the third in the line.

“Like his predecessor, Sir Adebutu’s exemplary life achievements and awesome potentials for positive social transformation were a crucial factor in his consideration for the prestigious position. From a very humble background to a life of a successful businessman of national and international repute, a philanthropist of rare breed and a social reformer of distinction, Sir Adebutu has emerged as the most suitable candidate for the position. He hails from Iperu Remo in Ikene Local Government Area of Ogun state, Nigeria.

“The choice of Adebutu as the Odole Oodua is also in recognition of his philanthropy, positive contributions to human development, and promotion of our prestigious cultural values and traditions as descendants of Oduduwa. The Kensington Adebukunola Adebutu Foundation(KAAF) and the medical laboratory and Maternity Centre established in 2005 among other commitments to the service of the poor and other vulnerable people in the society attest to this.

“In line with the established process of filling such an important position, both the political and spiritual wings of Ile-Oodua have sought Sir Adebutu’s consent in this regard on behalf of the Ooni and he has presented his acceptance of the offer to the Arole Oodua’Olofin Adimula, the Ooni of Ife for final ratification.

“All the necessary rites attached to the installation are being observed ahead of the installation ceremony slated. The kings, the high chiefs (AGBA IFE) and chief priests (THE ISOROS) are atop of the coronation rites which will reach the climax on the eve of the event in October 2109.”

  • Two ‘cultists’ say ‘we are sorry’ in Edo

Two students of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Inegbedion Sebastine and Alabi Joshua, who were arrested on suspicion of being members of Vikings Confraternity, have said they are sorry and have asked the school authorities and the Nigeria government to forgive them.

The two AAU students were paraded alongside 92 others by men of the Edo State police command for engaging in cultism.

Inegbedion who is a final-year law student is expected to graduate this month while Alabi is a 100-level student in the department of Electrical Engineering.

Paraphernalia of Vikings Confraternity such as regalia and other things used for initiation were allegedly found in Inegbedion’s room.

Speaking to our reporter, 24-year-old Inegbedion said he was forcefully initiated into cultism when he gained admission into the institution and all efforts by him to renounce were met with death threats.

Inegbedion said his father learnt about his involvement in cultism and was aware of the threat before he died.

He stated that he opted to lie low to complete his studies.

He said, “I was apprehended while writing my final examinations. My apartment was searched and they found Vikings regalia. I am not their number one man. It was my fellow cult members that brought them to my room.

“I barely stay in my rented apartment. I stay inside the campus because of my studies and fear of attack. I have never been aware of any student recruited into cultism because I am an inactive member.

“I hope this will not affect my studies. If it did, I will look for a better life and move on. I will get a decent job and live a responsible life. I gave my members my key and they have access to my room.

“I need a chance to renounce cultism and not thwart my education. I need to round up my study by Monday next week if the state could grant me amnesty to enable me finish my studies.

“I barely stay at home and so the cult members requested for my key to enable them have access to my room.”

I appeal to the school authorities to forgive me. I was scared. I plead with the school authorities to show mercy. I don’t have anything to do with these regalia.”

Spokesman for the institution, Mr. Edward Aihevba, said the Senate of the university would decide their fate after getting a report of the disciplinary committee.

Aihevba stated that the institution has zero tolerance for cultism and cult activities.
