  • Why APC won 2015 general elections, by Fashola

Minister for Works and Housing Babatunde Raji Fashola has opened up on the joker that earned the All Progressives Congress (APC) resounding victory during the 2015 general elections.

According to him, the party embarked on research and innovation that were people- oriented, which the then young party considered a panacea for democratic growth.

Fashola was the keynote speaker at the maiden Lagos State University Research fair with the theme: ‘Driving national development through research and innovation.”

Going down memory lane, the former governor of Lagos State,  said considering the varying ideologies and the harmonisation of splinter political parties that birthed APC, many cynics were of the view that the partly would collapse in no time.

Nonetheless, Fashola said as soon as the party was registered by the Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC), its first assignment was to carry out a research because of the masses’ disenchantment with the then ruling party.

He said: “APC was formed at a period many thought the country was at the brink of collapse.

“So what we did ahead of the general elections was carry out a research on what Nigerians wanted.

“We set up different committees one of which I was a member. We then conducted opinion study for about 20,000 Nigerians nationwide.

“This also included a face- to- face interactions with some Nigerians. In the end, we had data upon which we drew our conclusions.

“I remember security was top on the list, followed by corruption, education and then economic growth in that order.

“The result was a landslide victory for APC during the election,” Fashola said.

On the importance of research to national development, he added: “When APC was formed, many pundits described it as ‘a marriage of strange bedfellows’.

“Many even said it would not be registered by the Independent National Electpral Commission. Ironically, this is the same party that went on to win election against the incumbent.

“This is very rare in the nation’s political history, and therefore calls for research.”

Lagos governor, Fashola also recalled how he embarked on research towards decongesting human and vehicular movement within the Oshodi axis.

He said he equally conducted a research on the construction of Lekki/Epe expressway and Lekki Link Bridge respectively. However, while the former encountered hiccups owing to poor consultation with the people, the latter was very successful as his administration made wider consultations, which helped as no protest or confrontation was recorded after the bridge was opened till date.

  • Imo APC petitions Buhari over clampdown on members

The Imo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has petitioned President Muhammadu Buhari over what it called the unwarranted harassment of members of the party by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) led state government.

The party noted that its members have been marked for attacks as evidenced in the last three months where their homes and business places were mindlessly raided under the guise of recovering looted government properties by agents of the state government.

It noted that the state government is pursuing a complete disbandment of the APC in the state by demonizing the leaders and members of the party through orchestrated and unverifiable allegations of defrauding the state, in order to incite the people against the party.

The petition signed by the state Chairman of the party, Hon Daniel Nwafor, read in part, “All Progressives Congress (APC) Imo State Chapter wishes to petition to your office to Intervene and save our Party faithful and members in Imo Slate from harm, damages, threat, consequences of violence due to the incessant threats, intimidation and harassment of our members and leader, Distinguished Senator, Owelle Rochas Okorocha and his teaming supporters.

Since May 29 when the present Governor Emeka Ihedioha took over the governance of the State, torture, intimidation, harassment, or unlawful seizure of persons and properties of the past Governor of Imo State. Owelle Rochas Okorocha, his immediate family and the All Progressives Congress members by the current government and its agents has been the order of the day”.

It continued that, “Sir the most worrisome, embarrassing and violence-prone, was a conspiracy-threat and ambush led by Hon. Barr. Uche Onyeaeocha, the Secretary to the State Government, at the Imo International Cargo Airport on the 29″ day of August 2019 against Senator Rochas Okorocha and his supporters who they heard would have come into Imo State from Abuja on that faithful day.

“It is pertinent to inform you that Hon. Barr. Uche Onyegocha hired thugs from different parts of the Federation to attack Senator Rochas Okorocha if he had arrived Owerri. A video plate is attached to substantiate this claim.

“Furthermore, if probably the Senator’s brothers, immediate family members and the Members of our Party had gone to receive him, the tendency of violence to erupt was very high since from the video attached to this petition, the Secretary to the State Government Barr. Uche Onyeagocha had and continues to detail the thugs to attack the Senator and chase him away from Imo State. It is true that when injustice becomes a rule, resistance becomes a duty, the consequences of the injustice and resistance erupting is that the tendency of loss of lives and property is very Imminent and high”.

“Against this backdrop, the Party (APC) wishes to state categorically that when (Mello Rochaas Okorocha was the governor, no one (Including the then National House of Representative member, the governor of Imo State now. Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha was ambushed, prevented from coming into Imo Stale or attacked in any form or way, from going on their lawful duties and locations.

“Also, that the party and its members being law abiding citizens of Nigeria should not be expected to face this evil trend without resistance, and if the law enforcement agencies in the country refuse to take necessary actions, the people may retort to sell help which the consequences will not be comfortable to anyone.

“Therefore Sir we sincerely plead that you quickly intervene in this matter. The lives and properties of our leaders and members of our party in the state are in grave danger. We are living in apprehension over our safety and how long would this last.

“Finally, we plead that you cause an incisive and a thorough Investigation in this matter as we cannot resort to self-help once the efficiency of your command is obviously not in doubt”.

  • No mosque was demolished in Rivers- Northern youths

Coalition of Northern Youth Groups (CNYG) has denied the alleged demolition of a mosque in Port-Harcourt, capitals of Rivers state allegedly on the order of Governor Nyesom Wike.

It also called on northern youths across the country, to resist attempts to use them to stir religious crisis in Nigeria.

The coalition told reporters on Tuesday that the hoax about the alleged demolition was orchestrated to stir religious crisis.

Convener of the coalition, Comrade Mohammed Sanni, said: “We have observed with patriotic disenchantment the worrisome trend of some politicians capitalizing on falsehood to fan the furnace of ethnic, religious or regional division, just for self- serving and fiendish gains, while endangering the collective goodwill and peace.

“The recent wild rumor of an alleged demolition of a mosque located at Trans Amadi Road, GRA, Rivers State is not only false and misleading but intended to draw religious ire, stir political tension and widen the chasm of national division, which rather requires healing and bonding at this point in time.

“It should be noted that, we immediately swung into action on hearing the disturbing news and have conducted an on the spot visit to the said location and our findings are very contrary to the falsehood being peddled.

“A diligent assessment of the location showed that, even though structures were demolished around that area, none of such structures was or is a mosque building.

“On further interaction, with residents and the Muslim community in the area, we gathered that, the said location being labeled as a mosque building belongs to an individual who was building his personal structure without government approval.

“The said fellow had gone ahead to erect a foundation on the site ostensibly to wade off government action, he thereafter proceeded to unilaterally label the location as a mosque.”

The youths added: “Further findings led us to the clear revelation that the matter has been properly addressed by the relevant Courts and the government was acting within the precincts of the law.

“Judging from this, rationality should only dictate that, if the property owner has/had any issue of contention, the courts were and are still open to address his grievances rather than resorting to inflaming the polity with tense religious passions.”

They described Wike as a religiously tolerant governor, stating “his policies are friendly and his administration operates an open door policy irrespective of your region and religion.

“And what else did you expect from a nationalist like him? We are aware of the plot against him and we shall enlighten our fellow youths from northern part of the country against such plot!

“We have also seen the gusto with which political horse traders and religious alarmists have taken the matter and have therefore deemed it of prime importance to address our youth throughout the North and also those residents in Port Harcourt to remain calm and maintain the peace as we are still in wide consultations.

“It should not be lost on everyone that the Governor of Rivers State – Chief Nyesom Wike is a very good friend of the North and a brother to the Muslim community.

“Records show that he has always maintained a very cordial relationship with the Muslim community in Rivers state.

“It is therefore nothing but high pitched mischief for anyone to go about town with the anti-Muslim narrative.

“We wish to assure our brothers from the South that, they can and should go about their businesses within the Northern States peacefully and confidently, as we have commenced a series of proper sensitization of our youths.”
