A Federal High Court in Lagos will today deliver judgment in the alleged N1.6billion fraud trial of former President Goodluck Jonathan’s aide, Dr Waripamo Owei-Dudafa.

Dudafa along with a Heritage Bank worker Joseph Iwejuo are standing trial before Justice Mohammed Idris on 23 counts of money laundering involving N1.6bn.

The defendants are currently in court and awaiting judgment.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) accused the defendants of concealing the N1.6bn through a company, Seagate Property Development and Investment Limited, an offence contrary to Section 18(a) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) (Amendment) Act, 2012 and punishable under Section 17(a).

They were also accused of knowingly concealing proceeds of crime through Avalon Global Property Development Company Limited amounting to N399,470,000.00, among others.

EFCC said Dudafa, between June 1 and June 4, 2015, “procured” Iwejuo and Ebiwise Resources to conceal N150 million, being proceeds of crime.

Other companies allegedly used in laundering the money include Pluto Property and Investment Company Limited, Rotato Inter Link Services Limited and De Jakes Fast Food and Restaurant Nigerian Limited.

During trial, Dudafa alleged that EFCC “tormented” him in detention in a bid to get him to implicate Dr Jonathan.

He said he developed a spinal cord ailment while in custody, adding that he was denied adequate medical treatment and forced to write statements.

    The prosecution denied the allegations.

Mrs Tallen said: “We need your absolute cooperation in prayers and support. Nigeria is going through a difficult and trying moment. “As mothers of the nation, the prayers of mothers can never be neglected. You know that a praying mother would always succeed over every challenge that is facing the home.

“Mothers are the hearts of the home; mothers are the heart of the society; mothers are the engines that keep the family together.”

The minister advised the women to help curb the security challenges facing the country.

She said: “Women are in the position to help stem it because you are the mothers of the youths who are used to cause unrest in our society.

“You are wives to some of the men that are causing these problems within our society. As good mothers, as patriotic mothers, God has given us the wisdom to handle the home front effectively.

“I appeal for your patience, your prayers and your understanding. I appeal that you mentor the young ones coming up.”

Mrs Tallen noted that as leaders of Nigerian women, the NCWS cannot afford to fail the women.

“It is a challenge the President has thrown to us and I believe we are equal to the task.

“I want to thank God for bringing me to the ministry that is so dear to my heart. I am a life member of NCWS where I received an award in 1995 when I was a commissioner in Plateau State.

“Presently, I am the Northcentral Zonal Coordinator of the association.”

She promised to work with the NCWS to help Nigerian women.

Reacting to questions on how she will address perceived women marginalisation in politics, Mrs Tallen said: “We intend to have more women, not just coming out to participate in the process, but being winners of the elections. We hope to have women as governors, speakers and the rest.

“As you can see, we have a governorship aspirant, Natasha Akpoti, in our midst. We are going to change the narrative this time. It’s time for women to actively participate in politics.”

NCWS President, Dr. Gloria Laraba Shoda, earlier introduced Natasha to the minister.

She said: “The council is particularly happy that a member of our trustworthy society will drive the women affairs in the next few years. You are still one of us.

“We, as an organisation, championed the creation of the Women Affairs Ministry, which was achieved in 1975. We shall no longer look from the backdoor. We shall take our rightful place in the ministry.”

The Lagos State Election Petition Tribunal has reserved judgement on the suit filed by the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Ojo Federal Constituency election Yinka Murisq Durosinmi challenging the victory of the opposition Tajudeen Adekunle Obasa of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP).

In the suit dated March 28, 2019 with suit number EPT/LAG/REP/13/2019, APC and Durosinmi who are the petitioners are challenging the pronouncement of the victory of the first and second respondents as the winner of the Ojo Federal Constituency s on February 16th election, as well as the re-run election also held on Saturday March 2 2019 respectively.

The three-member tribunal panel comprises Justice Kunaza Hamidu; Justice W. R. Olamide; and Justice S I Okpara.

According to the petitioners, the election was fraught with irregularities, over-voting and non – compliance with the Electoral Act.

Obasa was also challenged over double registration of the permanent voters card with registration numbers; 90F58 57767 41583 0006 and 90F5B 57767 41582 6896 at polling units 046 and 048 in Ojo Local Government in that order. Upon the adoption of the final written address by the counsels on behalf of all the respective parties, the tribunal reserved the judgment of the petition on a yet-to-be-announced date.

In his reaction however, Obasa insists he won the election hands down.

“He (Durosinmi) is the one lying. I won that election in a fair contest,”Obasa argued.

“I am in an opposition. How possible is it for me to vote twice on the day of election?

“I won that election with over 13,000 plus but it was later altered to 3,146. Results of the five polling units and two polling points were not declared so my opponent wanted INEC to declare the entire election inconclusive.

“The total registered voters in those polling units (not declared) were 4,146 but INEC Returning Officer told them that since I still had a difference of about 3,146 votes, I should be declared the winner. He told them it was only INEC which has the power to cancel election and not them.

“Later at INEC office, they continued to demand a rerun which INEC graciously granted.”The re-run was held on Saturday March 2 which I also won and I’ve since received my Certificate of Return before they again challenged my victory at the tribunal.”

  • Sowore formed alliance with Kanu to attack Nigeria, says DSS

A judge of the Federal High Court in Abuja, Justice Evelyn Maha, has declined the request by detained Convener of #RevoltionNow, Omoyele Sowore, to hear his motion challenging his continued detention by the Department of State Services (DSS).

The DSS accused the detainee of holding “seris of closed-door meetings” with proscribed Independent  People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu, to attack Nigeria.

Another judge of the court, Justice Taiwo Taiwo, on August 8, had granted the DSS the permission to detain Sowore for 45 days in the first instance.

This followed the security agency’s claim that the detainee was involved in acts of terrorism and plotted to topple the government, an allegation he has since denied.

Rather than wait for the expiration of the 45 days granted the DSS, Sowore returned to the court, via a motion filed on August 9, demanding, among others, that the court vacates the order for his detention, made ex parte.

When the matter came up yesterday before Justice Maha, now sitting as the court’s vacation judge (after Taiwo concluded his vacation siting last week), the judge said she lacked the jurisdiction to hear Sowore’s motion.

Justice Maha said she lacked the powers to review the decision of his colleague, adding that doing so would amount to sitting on an appeal over a decision passed by a court of coordinate jurisdiction.

The judge also rejected an oral application for bail, made later by Sowore’s lead lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN).

She averred that having earlier issued her ruling before Falana’s oral application, she was functus officio (could no longer deal with the issue).

Justice Maha asked parties to return to the court which granted the detention order.

In the motion challenging his detention, Sowore, who is the publisher of Sahara Reporters and presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the February election, kicked at the detention order.

He queried the justification for his continued detention when, according to him, the DSS has concluded investigation of the matter and announced its findings.

He added that he had also volunteered statement to the applicant/respondent.

Read Also: Sowore faults claim he planned to topple govt

Sowore argued that “at the time of the hearing of the motion ex parte, the respondent/applicant was in custody of the applicant/respondent (DSS) at Abuja, within the jurisdiction of this honourable court”.

“The day the motion ex parte was filed at the registry of this honourable court, the respondent/applicant was allowed by the applicant/respondent to consult his counsel, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), on phone.

“The motion ex parte was predicated on suppression and misrepresentation of material facts. The motion ex parte constitutes a gross abuse of the process of this honourable court.

“The applicant’s/respondent’s motion ex parte filed on August 5, did not disclose any fact capable of linking the respondent/applicant to any terrorism activity.

“In the same vein, the motion filed August 5 did not, in the supporting affidavit, allude to facts linking the respondents/applicants to any terrorism activity.

“The applicant’s detention has exceeded the maximum period a court of law can allow the respondent to detain the applicant in accordance with the provisions of which only empower the applicant/respondent to detain the applicants for a maximum period of two months from the date of their arrest.

“The order made on August 8 was based on a wrong presumption and mistake that the complaint against the respondent therein relates to terrorism.

“By virtue of Section 293 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015, an application for the remand of any suspect is to be made before a Magistrates’ Court.”

The DSS prayed the court to reject Sowore’s request that the detention order be set aside.

The service said its investigation revealed that #RevolutionNow was a smokescreen for the actual intention of Sowore and his allies “to topple the government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria”.

The DSS said it carried out painstaking investigation on Sowore’s activities due to the quantum of evidence so far gathered.

The service said it may return to court to seek an extension of the 45 days granted it by the Federal High Court, Abuja, to detain the suspect.

In the counter-affidavit deposed to by Godwin Agbadua, an official of the DSS, the service averred that Sowore was arrested on reasonable suspicion of having committed a capital offence, following his alleged involvement in terrorist activities.

“The respondent/applicant (Sowore) planned to violently change the government through the hashtag #RevolutionNow. The respondent/applicant hid under the cover of a call for mass protest with the hash tag #RevolutionNow to mislead unsuspecting and innocent members of the public into joining him to topple the government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“In his plot to topple the government the respondent/applicant held series of meetings with members at a prescribed terrorist organisation, Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) with a view to mobilising strong forces to realise his agenda at changing the government.

“The respondent formed an alliance with a fugitive, Nnamdi Kano, a self-acclaimed leader of the proscribed terrorists group, IPOB, to launch series of attacks on Nigeria with a view to violently removing the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“After series of closed-door meetings between the duo in the United States of America (U.S.A), they addressed a media briefing wherein they both stated their resolve to form an alliance against the Nigerian government. The duo stated that they had a well-planned out strategy to realise their objective, which is toppling the government.

“The applicant/respondent is investigating the activities of the respondent/applicant as it relates to a terrorists organisation, IPOB. The facts show a conjecture between the respondent/applicant and IPOB activities.

“There is the need for the applicant/respondent to investigate such reasonable suspicion of the relationship between the respondent/applicant and IPOB,” the DSS said.

  • Sanwo-Olu hails ECOWAS for promoting regional integration

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has hailed the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) for promoting integration in the sub-region.

The governor gave the commendation yesterday in a message he sent to a sensitisation workshop on the ECOWAS Trade Liberalisation Scheme (ETLS) in Ikeja, the state capital.

The message was read by his Special Adviser (SA) on Commerce and Industry, Mr Oladele Ajayi.

According to the governor, a common market created by ECOWAS will not only encourage entrepreneurial development but also increase intra-regional trade among member-states.

He said: “Going by the theme, this workshop is aimed at achieving economic development through duty free trades.

“I hereby implore micro, small, medium and large enterprise owners to seize the opportunity towards enhancing their enterprise competitiveness and profitability.

“Our state and the country at large will benefit when these indigenous businesses thrive.”

The Head of National Unit of ECOWAS, Ambassador Musa Nuhu, said he hoped the forum would enlighten the private sector on how to apply and enjoy the scheme.

Read Also: Sanwo-Olu promises to support education

“The level of trade between African countries is quite low. Part of the response was for us to come out here to inform entrepreneurs of the benefits of trading within ECOWAS.

“It does not matter whether it is a big or small company. All that matters is the good being produced by the company,” he said.

Also, Mrs Toki Mabogunje, the representative of the President of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), Mr Babatunde Ruwase, noted that recent global developments in trade had made it necessary for stakeholders to come together to discuss.

“Since the establishment of ECOWAS in 1975 with the purpose of promoting regional cooperation and economic integration, the commission has been making concerted efforts aimed at enabling free trade areas and common market.

“The commencement of ETLS in 1979 and its expansion in 1990 to cover industrial goods, in addition to agriculture and handcrafted products, has shown the desire of member-states to share a common market and remove barriers to trade within the region,” she said.”

Mabogunje said ETLS remained the main operational tool of promoting a free trade area and ensuring the free movement of goods without the payment of Customs duties.

She described the workshop as timely and necessary for stakeholders to discuss the challenges facing the implementation of ETLS within the sub-region.

“This forum provides an opportunity for stakeholders to assess the scheme and proffer possible solutions to make it better and to benefit Nigeria and other member-states.

“The Lagos Chamber of Commerce believes that Nigeria stands to benefit from the ETLS if member states work towards a successful implementation,” Mrs Mabogunje said.

The workshop, with theme: Increasing Intra-regional Trade through ETLS, was held at the LCCI House in Ikeja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the aim of the ETLS is to establish a free trade area where enterprises of member-states will move goods within the ECOWAS bloc without paying duties and levies.

Officials from the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nigeria Customs Service (NIS), the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) and captains of industry attended the workshop.
