The police have arraigned a clergyman, Akin Ajagbe, at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly cheating a housewife of N180,000 for a United Kingdom (UK) visa.
Ajagbe is charged with obtaining money under false pretences and stealing.
Prosecuting Sergeant Ishola Samuel said Ajagbe, 52, who lives at 31, Church Street, Oke-odo, Agege, Lagos, with one person at large, committed the offence on August 10, 2017.
He alleged that Ajagbe fraudulently obtained N180,000 from the complainant, Mrs. Biliki Adesope, to procure a UK visa for her.
The police have arrested a suspected robbery kingpin allegedly terrorising bank customers at Egbe and Ikotun areas of Lagos.
A ring leader of a car snatching syndicate, identified as Francis Abubakar, has also been nabbed by the detectives attached to Satellite Town Division.
A statement yesterday by spokesman Bala Elkana, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), said the suspected robbery kingpin was arrested last Friday shortly after his gang allegedly attacked customers outside Access Bank, near the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) junction at Ejigbo.
He said: “Patrol teams sent from Ejigbo Police Station to reinforce the mobile policemen on duty at the bank engaged the robbers in a gun battle. The robbers were overpowered and they fled on their motorcycles. They were chased to Egbe where their ring leader was arrested with bullet wounds, while others escaped.
“One Brownie pistol with a live ammunition was recovered from the suspect. The sum of N250,000 earlier snatched from a female victim was recovered and handed over to her.
“The Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) has taken over the investigation and efforts are on to nab other fleeing members of the gang.”
The police said the suspected car snatcher was arrested around 11:10pm on Friday when his gang attempted to snatch a Peugeot 307 saloon car from the owner at Mosalachi, on the Badagry Expressway.
“Francis Abubakar, the ring leader of the gang, was arrested. A locally-made shotgun was recovered from the suspect. The Peugeot 307 saloon car was recovered and handed over to the owner. SARS has taken over the case with a view to apprehending other members of the gang. Investigation is ongoing. The suspects will be arraigned.”

Dada, 20, and Sheidu, 50, who both live in Agege, Lagos, are facing a two-count charge of stealing and receiving stolen property.
They, however, pleaded not guilty.
Prosecuting Sergeant Ishola Samuel said the duo committed the offences on July 18, at 10:15am, at Shop 26, Ashade Phase 11 Market, Agege.
Five children have been killed when their home caught fire at Abagbo village, Takwa Bay Island, Lagos, the police said on Sunday.
The children, Folake Ogundiya, 13, and her eight-year-old sibling, Abigail; six-year-old Daniel Bakare, Chidima Achomye, two-year-old Nnamdi Achomye and one-year-old Khadijat were said to have been burnt beyond recognition during the incident, which occurred last Tuesday.
A statement by police spokesman Bala Elkana, a Deputy Superintendent (DSP), said the children were locked inside the house by one Suliat, in whose care a mother, Florence Asoye, left them.
Elkana said Asoye reported the incident around 10:30am on Wednesday, adding that Suliat was nowhere to be found.
“The woman said she left the children in care of Suliat around 6:30pm so that she could go to Takwa Bay Jetty.
“She said by the time she returned, her home had been burnt down, adding that Suliat locked the children in the room and left to unknown destination. The case is under investigation,” he said.
Elkana said the command was also investigating the death of a female lodger at Southbound Hotel, Morogbo.
The woman, identified as Jessica, was found dead at the hotel around 2pm on Friday with marks suggestive of strangulation and visible bloodstains.
Elkana said the police received information about a dead lodger and homicide detectives visited the scene and evacuated the body.
“Homicide detectives visited the scene. The body was found on the bed facing up, with a swollen face and foam-like fluid coming out of her mouth. Her throat was knotted with clothes, suggesting that she might have been strangled.
“There were bloodstains all over the place. The body was taken to mortuary for autopsy, while the scene was preserved for forensic analysis.
“Commissioner Zubairu Muazu has ordered the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID), Yaba to take over the investigation,” he said.
Two businessmen, Okechukwu Ikechukwu and Jideofor Ofordile, have been brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.
They were charged with defrauding two men of N530,000.
Ikechukwu, 40, a resident of Agbado, and Ofordile, 55, who lives at Abule-Egba, Lagos, however, pleaded innocence of the three-count charge of conspiracy, obtaining money under false pretences and stealing.
Prosecuting Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Ezekiel Ayorinde said the defendants committed the offences on August 29, 2017 at Pen Cinema, Lagos.
He said the defendants obtained N530,000 from Messrs Friday Orie and Charles Chinweze, on the pretext of allocating a lock-up shop to each of them.
“The defendants collected N290,000 from Orie and N240,000 from Chinweze totalling N530,000.
“When the complainants got to the shop, they discovered that the building, where the shops were located, had been marked for demolition by the Lagos State Government, due to road construction.
“When the complainants asked for their money, the defendants refused to give them.
“This month made it two years since the defendants collected money from the complainants, which they refused to pay.
“The complainants reported the case and the defendants were arrested,” the prosecutor said.
Ayorinde said the alleged offences contravened Sections 287, 314 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.
Magistrate B. O. Osunsanmi granted the defendants N200,000 bail each, with two sureties each, as part of the bail conditions.
He said the sureties should be employed and show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
A 33-year-old businesswoman, Angela David, who pleaded guilty to pouring hot water on her 13-year-old daughter, has changed her plea to not guilty.
Angela on August 1 pleaded guilty to inflicting grievous injuries on her daughter before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court and was remanded at Kirikiri Prisons, pending sentencing.
At the resumed hearing last Friday, Magistrate B. O. Osunsanmi was about to sentence Angela, when she changed her plea to not guilty, saying she did not understand the charge when she took the guilty plea.
Osunsanmi then granted her bail in the sum of N200,000, with two sureties in the like sum.
She said the sureties must be employed and show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
Prosecuting Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Ezekiel Ayorinde told the court that the defendant committed the offence on July 30 at Ilupeju, Lagos.
He alleged that the defendant poured hot water on her 13-year-old daughter for allegedly stealing her N2,700.
“The defendant boiled water and poured it on her daughter while she was asleep.
“Her screams alerted neighbours, who rushed to the defendant’s room and took her to hospital.
“They reported the case to the police and the defendant was arrested,” Ayorinde said.
The offence, he said, contravened Section 246 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS), has implored the President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari and his South African counterpart, Cyril Ramaphosa, to intervene toward ending xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa.
Mr Adeyemi Azeez, national Public Relations Officer (PRO), of the association, made the suggestion in a statement made available to newsmen in Abuja on Sunday.
Azeez said that for South Africa businesses to thrive in Nigeria, the problems of xenophobic attacks must first be dealt with.
According to him, NANS believes it is imperative for the two leaders to meet urgently and address the issue.
“Nigerian students, as intellectuals, believe that the best approach to the problem is to address the root/origin/bases of the problem; once the foundation of a problem is addressed, the problem becomes basically solved.
“Our resolve is that businesses of South Africans will only thrive in Nigeria if we put an end to Xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa.
“NANS leadership has determinedly resolved not to relent in championing an infinite struggle against South African bussinesses in Nigeria, as long as Xenophobic attacks on Nigerians by South Africans continues.
” NANS calls on the two leaders to address the issue of Xenophobic attacks as that of an outbreak of EBOLA or any other deadly disease.”
Azeez described the proposed meeting of the two president in October as a welcome development, but added that the time frame for the meeting was too long owing to the urgency of the matter.
He said that the association would therefore want the two presidents to, as a matter of urgency, reschedule the meeting to a closer date, preferably in the next seven days.
Former Oyo Governor Abiola Ajimobi has charged Nigerians to imbibe spirit of tolerance and sacrifice as Muslims worldwide celebrates Eid-el Kabir.
He gave the charge on Sunday after the eid prayers held at Ansar-ud-deen Islamic Centre located along the Liberty road in Ibadan.
The former governor, accompanied by some of his aides, had arrived the eid praying ground at exactly 8.45am for the prayer.
Ajimobi urged Nigerians to live in the spirit of eid-el Kabir, which he said encapsulated tolerance, sacrifice and total submission to the will of Allah.
He called on the people to cooperate with government at various levels to succeed, saying such was in the good of all and sundry.
“You can never be a president, governor or minister without the approval of God. So, whoever God has elevated to such position, they must be supported.
“Our people must support President Muhammadu Buhari and Gov. Seyi Makinde to succeed. If they succeed, we will make progress.
“Don’t wish Makinde bad, wish him well so that our state can progress. Though, he is in another party but serving the state. Let’s work with him and let’s support him. Let’s pray for him, let’s work with him so that he can succeed”.” he said.
He added: ”Let’s continually appreciate God. The spirit of the season is to believe in God and to be able to sacrifice. Whatever we do is sacrifice. Not just by slaughtering of rams. We must believe in our leaders. We were there.
“There is always a yesterday for every leader. When you are there you give your best, fear God and not human beings. You can offend men but don’t offend God. The only regret is that I tried to be perfect in an imperfect world.
“Let’s support the current governor, Governor Seyi Makinde for him to succeed. If he succeeds , we will make progress. Don’t wish him bad. Wish him well so that he can succeed. So that he can take our state up and up. It is another party but it doesn’t matter. He is for the state. Let’s pray for him, let’s work with him so that he can succeed”.
On the vehicles allegedly taken away by some of his former aides, the former governor said:” When you are in government there are decisions you made.
“When Adebayo Adelabu was leaving where he was working he was given eight vehicles. When I was leaving where I was working in the corporate world, I was given 14. When I came in, I didn’t meet any vehicle.
“Those are old vehicles. They should go and find out from the civil servants who took the vehicles to workshops”.
On debt profile of the state which Governor Makinde said is over N150 billion, Senator Ajimobi said:” We have the best debt profile. The USA is the number one debtor in the world. You must use people’s money to make money. In the Debt Management Office publication, Oyo is not in the first 10″.

Forty-nine international undergraduate students from European, Asian and African countries have been accepted for clinical attachment in various fields of medical sciences by the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital(AKTH).
A statement by the hospital on Sunday indicated majority of the attachees were medical students who came for practical attachment with Professors and Consultants while others were pharmacy and nursing students.
The European students were from the United Kingdom, Turkey and Hungry while those from Asian countries were from China, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
Students from African countries that were accepted for their elective clinical attachment in the teaching hospital were from Egypt, Republic of Benin, Uganda, Ghana and Sudan.
A breakdown of the data on the clinical attachment contained in the hospital’s 2015/2016 Annual Report quoted in the statement showed that 24 of the students were from the famous October 6 University, Cairo, Egypt; four from Batter Medical College Saudi Arabia while five students came from two Chinese Universities, the Liaoning Medical University and the Southeast University.
Two of the students were from the Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge, United Kingdom; three from two Universities in Turkey and one student from the University of Debrecen, Hungry.
Three students were attached to AKTH from SEGI University, Malaysia.
Universities in Africa that sent their students for elective clinical attachment to the hospital in addition to the October 6 University Cairo, include the Kampala International University and Cavendish University, Uganda; Afriford University, Cotonou, Republic of Benin and Sudan International University.
The hospital also accepted 103 Midwifery Students from the Kano State College of Nursing and six from the National Open University of Nigeria for clinical attachment in the reporting period.
Clinical attachment provides opportunity for medical, pharmaceutical and nursing students to gain overview of medical processes by observing a professor or consultant in a relevant specialty at work.
The attachment also contributes in showing that the attachees meet the standards of competence, care and conduct expected of doctors, pharmacists and nurses.
