  • Jolokoto radio drama series hits airwaves to tackle health, environmental issues

Worried by the need to ensure that people make adequate plans ahead of raising children, a local organization which specializes in entertainment-education via radio and television, Population Media Centre (PMC) has concluded arrangement to begin the broadcasting of a new radio show across Oyo and Ogun states of the Southwest states.

The new show christened ‘Jolokoto,’ according to the PMC Country Representative, Mr Ephraim Okon, is to address gender-related issues, human rights, health and environmental information.

Okon told reporters in Ibadan the new 120-episode radio show leverages the high-quality health care networks available from PMCs four clinical partners.

He maintained the focus of the radio show is to remodel behaviour and peoples characters in a way that would show to them that they can have the number of children they want but must plan their way through so as not to end up as issues.

Okon maintained that the better the plan people have as parents in terms of family planning and children spacing, the better and easier they find it to manage the family.

He said: “On August 8th 2019, Jolokoto (Mirror of Life), a new radio show in Yoruba will begin broadcasting across Oyo and Ogun states in Southwestern Nigeria. The storylines will span 120 episodes, broadcasting for about 15 months while the audiences explore love, violence, hope and fear.

“The dramatic show, broadcasting in the two states on multiple public and privately own radio stations will draw people into different stories of families, friends and privately own radio stations, will draw people into different stories of families, friends and enemies struggling to succeed among the challenges of everyday life.

“And these stories will not only entertain audiences with every episode, they are also designed to inform and educate. Jolokoto is designed to seamlessly weave gender issues, human rights, health and environmental information into the storylines.

“Dramatising daily life allows for inclusion of increasing important struggles such as gender-based violence, reproductive health rights and environmental issues into the consciousness of the people.

“Specifically, the new 120-episode radio show leverages the high-quality health care networks available from our four clinical partners, seeking to:

  • Insecurity makes northeast residents vulnerable to poverty, says global body

The security challenges in the north east may have led to increase in the poverty rate of people in rural communities, an international non-governmental organisation, Save the Children, has said.

The organisation said that people in the region can no longer access their farms, adding that they cannot produce as much as they use to produce.

It noted that the normal livelihood of people in the region had been disrupted, leading to their increased vulnerability.

Save the Children Head of Food Security and Livelihood, Chachu Tadicha, said this during the unveiling of the Household Economy Analysis (HEA) in Abuja on Monday.

He said: “We know that conflict affects people’s livelihood. For example, the farmers will not have access to land and therefore, even in very rich productive areas in the north east, people can no longer access their farms and therefore they cannot produce as much as they use to produce.

“This affects access to food. At the same time it also affects their access to income because the businesses they used to depend on is disrupted and their trade route is disrupted.

  • Herrera hits at Man Utd board after move to PSG

Ander Herrera claims the Manchester United board failed to convince him of his “importance within the squad” amid contract talks, which led to his free transfer to Paris Saint Germain.

The 29-year-old signed a five-year contract with the French champions last week after his previous deal at Old Trafford expired on July 1.

The Spain international signed for the Red Devils from Athletic Club in 2014 and quickly became a fan favourite due to his tenacious style of play and passion on the pitch.

Herrera racked up 189 appearances for United across all competitions, scoring 20 goals, while also winning the FA Cup, Carabao Cup and Europa League.

It is understood that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wished to keep the midfielder ahead of the 2019-20 campaign but the club were not willing to meet his £350,000-per-week wage demands.

And during his first interview as a PSG player, Herrera has admitted that certain reassurances over his position and importance at United were not forthcoming, which is why he decided to move on.

“I don’t like looking at the past but there were differences regarding the project and my importance within it,” he told Marca

“I was very happy, I have a lot to thank the club for, the fans and also Solskjaer.

“He did a lot for me to stay, but things didn’t happen. They arrived late and, by then, I’d already made the decision to play in Paris.”

Herrera was restricted to 22 Premier League appearances last term amid persistent injury problems, but he was still a standout performer in a struggling team.

The ex-Bilbao enforcer often outperformed United’s star names and even earned the club’s Player of the Year award in 2017, after an outstanding first season under Jose Mourinho.

Looking back on his time at Old Trafford, Herrera admitted winning the award was among his proudest moments, while also stating he would never have joined another English club after five memorable years in Manchester.

“It has been fantastic. In five years I have played 189 games and I have been important for all the coaches,” he added.

“It is true that that the MVP (Sir Matt Busby Award) makes one feel special and very happy, I keep every moment that I have lived.

“Why PSG? Because to leave United, the biggest team in England, you need something like PSG, which is the biggest in France. I could not play in another English club”(Goal.com)
