FULL LIST: Top 11 largest oil refineries in the world

Dangote Group has signed a contract valued at over $350 million with India’s state-owned Engineers India Limited (EIL).

The development was disclosed by EIL in a statement released recently. Under the agreement, EIL will serve as the Project Management Consultant (PMC) and Engineering, Procurement and Construction Management (EPCM) consultant for the expansion.

This replicates the role it played in the delivery of the existing 650,000 barrels-per-day refinery, which was commissioned in 2024.

The Refinery will be expanded from 650,000 barrels per day to 1.4 million bpd.

The expansion will be executed through the addition of a second processing train and will focus on the production of Euro VI–compliant fuels.

Beyond refining, the project also includes a major scale-up of petrochemical output. Dangote plans to increase polypropylene production from 830,000 tonnes per annum to 2.4 million tonnes per annum by revamping its existing polypropylene unit, installing an additional 1.2 million-tonne unit, and adding a 750,000-tonne UOP Oleflex unit to boost propylene feedstock supply.

Commissioned in 2023, the Dangote Refinery in Lagos is Africa’s most ambitious industrial project and the newest refinery on this list. Currently operating at 650,000 barrels per day (bpd), the facility is set for expansion to 1.4 million bpd, positioning Nigeria as a major global refining hub and significantly reducing fuel imports across Africa.

    8. Ras Tanura Refinery, Saudi Arabia (1945)

  • From Storyteller to Juror: The continuing evolution of Anietie Udoh

From Storyteller to Juror: The continuing evolution of Anietie Udoh

    • By Ojo Maduekwe

For much of the last two decades, African communicators had been preoccupied with visibility. The goal was to be seen, heard, and sometimes acknowledged by global platforms that defined excellence elsewhere. In recent years there’s been a shift from seeking visibility to authority, and few careers illustrate this trajectory more clearly than that of Anietie Udoh.

The Divisional Director of Marketing at Marketing Edge Publications Limited, Anietie has spent nearly the same time operating across journalism, public relations, and integrated marketing communications. His professional journey mirrors a transition within African communications from narrating brand stories to interrogating the standards by which those stories are judged.

At Marketing Edge, Anietie has overseen strategic partnerships that place African creative work in direct conversation with global benchmarks. Under his leadership, the leading publication has deepened collaborations with international platforms such as Cannes Lions, The Loeries, New York Festivals International Advertising Awards, and African Cristal Festival. These are not symbolic affiliations. They are pipelines that expose Nigerian and African creatives to global scrutiny while importing international judging frameworks into local discourse.

That dual exposure has become central to Anietie’s growing relevance in the industry.

In 2025 alone, he was appointed to an unusually broad slate of jury panels spanning local, continental, and global platforms. These include the 9th annual Native Advertising Awards in Copenhagen, AME Awards Grand Jury, Effie Awards South Africa, Nigeria’s PR Power List, the International Content Marketing Awards, International ECHO Awards, Digital Marketing Award Kenya, and the Out-of-Home category jury at the Lagos Advertising and Ideas Festival (LAIF).

Each appointment evaluates his work through different lenses: native advertising prioritises audience integration, Effies foreground measurable effectiveness, ECHO rewards data-driven precision, while LAIF’s OOH category interrogates creativity within lived urban realities. Few African professionals are invited to judge across all these axes simultaneously.

In January 2025, Anietie joined the global jury of the Native Advertising Awards in Copenhagen, one of the world’s largest platforms dedicated to non-disruptive brand storytelling. Around the same period, he emerged as the only African finalist for the Native Advertising Marketer of the Year award, placing him alongside executives from Business Insider and Fortune Brand Studio. That shortlisting was significant not just for representation, but for parity. It placed African strategic thinking within the same evaluative frame as legacy Western media brands.

By February, he was appointed to the AME Awards Grand Jury, a space reserved for senior evaluators tasked with determining not creativity alone, but demonstrable business impact. In June, he joined the Effie Awards South Africa jury under the theme “You Can’t Fake Real Impact”, reinforcing a growing industry shift away from spectacle toward accountability and real impact. By September, ICMA selected him as a judge for its 2025 edition, citing the need for evaluators who understand both strategy and execution across markets.

These appointments reflect a quiet recalibration underway in global marketing. As emerging markets such as Africa account for a growing share of creative experimentation, judging rooms can no longer afford cultural homogeneity. Evaluators must understand fragmented audiences, infrastructural constraints, and storytelling traditions outside of Western defaults. Anietie’s background, spanning the newsroom, public relations, and brand marketing, equips him to interrogate work not just for polish, but for relevance and consequence.

Being one of few African voices in global juries carries the burden of resisting tokenism while maintaining rigor. Anietie’s judging philosophy, shaped by his training in Philosophy from the University of Lagos, leans heavily on first principles: clarity of intent, alignment between insight and execution, and evidence of impact beyond awards entries. In an industry often accused of rewarding style over substance, his judging philosophy is a breath of fresh air.

His appointment as an Out-of-Home juror at LAIF further sharpens the stakes. OOH advertising in Nigeria operates within complex urban ecosystems where regulation, infrastructure, and audience behaviour collide. Anietie sits precisely at that intersection: applying global standards through contextual intelligence and translating best practice without erasing local truth.

What emerges from Anietie’s trajectory is not merely a personal success story, but a signal that African communicators are no longer content with building brands that win attention; they are increasingly invested in shaping the rules by which excellence is measured. The shift from storyteller to standard-setter marks a maturation of the continent’s creative economy.

From Nigeria to Kenya, South Africa and Copenhagen, Anietie’s presence on international judging panels underscores how fluid creative borders have become. More importantly, it reinforces a reality global platforms are slowly acknowledging: African creatives are not just recipients of standards, but contributors and co-creators of them.

In that sense, Anietie’s jury appointments do more than validate an individual career. They reflect a broader rebalancing of authority in global marketing, one where Africa is no longer positioned merely as a market to be interpreted, but as a laboratory of creativity, insight, and real impact. And as standards evolve, those helping to define them inevitably shape the future.

  • Lagos Taskforce clarifies Okada enforcement procedures

Lagos Taskforce clarifies Okada enforcement procedures

The Lagos State Taskforce has clarified its enforcement procedures on commercial motorcycle (okada) operations, reaffirming its commitment to public safety, integrity and the rule of law.

The agency, in a statement issued by its Director of Public Affairs, Gbadeyan Abdulraheem, expressed concern over what it described as misleading and unsubstantiated claims circulating on social media regarding its enforcement activities, including allegations of extortion, illegal sale of seized motorcycles, use of unauthorised persons, abuse of force and compromise of leadership integrity.

According to the statement, commercial motorcycles are apprehended only after due process through the Mobile Court for violations of the Lagos State Road Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018, particularly for operating on routes prohibited by the state government.

It explained that all seized motorcycles are transferred to the Ministry of Transportation and subsequently crushed at the government-approved junk yard in Alausa, stressing that seized motorcycles are never sold back to operators or diverted for personal gain.

The agency added that this policy has contributed to a significant reduction in illegal okada operations across the state. It, however, noted that seized vehicles, unlike motorcycles, are auctioned by the state government through court-approved and transparent processes.

Abdulraheem further clarified that it does not engage civilian touts, noting that its paramilitary operatives may operate in plain clothes as part of intelligence-led operations, a standard practice in law enforcement. It stated that all officers involved in enforcement are trained personnel operating within approved frameworks.

The agency observed that enforcement against illegal okada operators often poses serious risks due to aggressive resistance and the danger to passengers, officers and other road users, adding that operations are therefore conducted with tact and safety as a priority.

It also disclosed that intelligence reports have shown that many operators apprehended in restricted areas are non-Nigerians without proper documentation, noting that criminal elements sometimes exploit the okada business to evade scrutiny and perpetrate unlawful activities. According to the Taskforce, this makes illegal okada operations a broader public safety and security concern beyond traffic management.

The statement reaffirmed confidence in the leadership of the Taskforce Chairman, CSP Adetayo Akerele, describing him as a disciplined and highly respected officer with a strong record of professionalism and integrity. It dismissed allegations of personal enrichment or complicity in unlawful practices as baseless and unfounded.

On the use of tear gas, the Taskforce said it remains a globally accepted crowd-control measure deployed by trained and authorised personnel under strict guidelines to prevent escalation and protect lives.

The agency urged members of the public to verify information through official channels before sharing unverified claims on social media, stressing its unwavering commitment to ensuring a safe, orderly and secure environment for residents of the state.

  • FAB set to open Nigeria branch as Tinubu, UAE deepen economic ties

FAB set to open Nigeria branch as Tinubu, UAE deepen economic ties

First Abu Dhabi Bank (FAB), the largest bank in the United Arab Emirates, is set to establish a branch in Nigeria.

This move signals growing financial ties between Africa’s largest economy and one of the Middle East’s leading financial hubs.

The disclosure was made on Friday by the Minister of State for Finance, Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite, through a post on her official X (formerly Twitter) handle, following high-level engagements with the Abu Dhabi-based financial institution.

According to the minister, Nigeria has held strategic discussions “with First Abu Dhabi Bank (@FABConnects) on deepening financial collaboration between Nigeria and the UAE,” adding that the planned entry of the bank into the Nigerian market reflects increased investor confidence in the country’s economic direction.

“This engagement reflects growing confidence in Nigeria’s reforms and our commitment to attracting credible global capital to support growth and development,” Uzoka-Anite said.

The proposed expansion by FAB comes against the backdrop of a broader strengthening of bilateral economic relations between Nigeria and the UAE, marked recently by the conclusion of the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between the two countries.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu announced the successful conclusion of the agreement earlier this week, describing it as a milestone that would unlock expanded trade, sustainable investment and deeper cooperation across key sectors of both economies.

He said the partnership would enhance collaboration in aviation, logistics, agriculture and climate-smart infrastructure, while creating long-term opportunities for citizens and businesses in both countries.

“This is a historic and strategic agreement that opens new pathways for shared prosperity,” the president said during his address on the development.

As part of the deepening engagement, Nigeria and the UAE are also set to co-host Investopia in Lagos in February, a global investment platform expected to bring together investors, innovators, policymakers and business leaders.

According to Tinubu, the event is designed to transform opportunities into concrete commitments and ideas into bankable investments.

“We warmly invite our partners to join us and help build the next chapter of sustainable and shared prosperity for Nigeria, Africa, and the world,” he said.

The president used the platform to outline Nigeria’s ambition to mobilise up to $30 billion annually in climate and green industrial finance as the country accelerates energy transition reforms and expands nationwide access to electricity.

“The foundation of every modern economy is electricity. As an emerging economy in the Global South, we understand the delicate balance between industrialisation and decarbonisation, ensuring neither is pursued at the expense of the other,” Tinubu said.

He also called for changes to the global financial system to make it easier for developing countries to access sustainable capital.

“We are calling for a fundamental shift in the global financial architecture: a move away from the restrictive requirement of sovereign guarantees, which unfairly penalise developing economies,” the president stated.

“Instead, the focus should be on blended finance and first-loss capital mechanisms that allow private sustainable capital flows directly into our green projects without further straining national balance sheets,” he added.

Tinubu further disclosed that Nigeria has strengthened its climate governance framework through the adoption of a National Carbon Market Activation Policy and the launch of a National Carbon Registry, measures aimed at improving transparency and boosting investor confidence in the country’s green economy.

The planned entry of First Abu Dhabi Bank into Nigeria’s financial landscape is expected to support these broader objectives by expanding access to international capital, facilitating cross-border trade finance and enhancing financial sector collaboration between Nigeria and the Gulf region.

Tinubu mourns Plateau cleric Imam Abubakar, hails courage and humanity

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Imam Abdullahi Abubakar, the Chief Imam of Nghar village in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, describing him as a courageous servant of God whose life embodied faith, humanity and uncommon bravery.

Imam Abubakar, who died at the age of 92, rose to national and international prominence in 2018 after sheltering more than 200 Christians during violent communal attacks that swept through parts of Plateau State.

In a condolence message issued on Thursday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu said the late cleric’s actions stood as a powerful testament to the sanctity of human life and the true meaning of religious devotion.

“At such a time when tribal and religious tendencies seemed to overwhelm reason, Imam Abubakar stood firmly on the side of peace, benevolence and conscience,” the President said.

According to him, the cleric’s decision to protect those under threat, despite the danger to his own life, demonstrated rare moral courage and selflessness.

“Mindless of the enormous risk to his own life, the noble cleric chose humanity over division, love as opposed to hatred and embrace rather than rejection,” Tinubu stated, adding that the Imam’s actions spoke louder than sermons and offered a timeless message to the world.

The President noted that Imam Abubakar’s heroic conduct earned him local and international recognition, celebrating his commitment to peaceful coexistence among people of different faiths and backgrounds.

Describing the late cleric as an enduring symbol of interfaith harmony, Tinubu urged religious and community leaders across the country to draw lessons from his life by promoting tolerance, mutual respect and peaceful coexistence.

“I urge religious and community leaders to imbibe and preach the spirit of tolerance, mutual respect and peaceful togetherness as expounded in the life of Imam Abubakar,” he said.

President Tinubu prayed for the repose of the soul of the late cleric, asking God to grant him eternal rest and reward him for his courage and good deeds.
