NEC moves to boost non-oil revenue, sets up panel on legacy projects

The National Economic Council (NEC) has resolved to deepen engagement with stakeholders to boost non-oil revenues in line with the economic blueprint of the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Chairman of the Council, Vice President Kashim Shettima, called for an accelerated transition from oil to a non-oil economy through competitive manufacturing, export diversification and private sector investment.

According to a statement by Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications, Office of the Vice President, Stanley Nkwocha, the Council also approved the constitution of a committee on the implementation of the President’s directive on the actualisation of legacy projects.

The committee is to be chaired by the Governor of Cross River State, with one Governor from each sub-region as members: North West (Sokoto), North East (Gombe), North Central (Niger), South East (Abia) and South West (Lagos).

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, Deborah Odoh, will serve as secretary to the committee, while the Ministers of Works and Transportation will also be members.

NEC’s decisions were taken on Thursday during its 156th meeting and first of the year, held virtually, following a presentation on the economic priorities for 2026 by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun.

The presentation highlighted key reforms implemented by the Tinubu administration, including targeted programmes that have removed distortions in the system, stabilised the economy and placed Nigeria on the path of sustained recovery and prosperity.

It also reflected the country’s current global recognition, which is reinforcing investor confidence in an economy projected to grow at 4.68 per cent in 2026.

According to the minister, key priorities include maintaining Nigeria’s economic competitiveness through sound governance, improving the availability and affordability of food, ensuring human capital development with improved social protection, and the timely payment of debt service, salaries and pensions.

In its resolution, NEC noted and commended the Federal Government’s plans to unlock rapid and sustained job-rich growth, high-quality jobs and entrepreneurship opportunities.

The Council also resolved to dedicate a special session to address salient issues in the country’s food security efforts, particularly those affecting agricultural productivity.

In his opening remarks, Vice President Shettima observed that while “global powers assert their interests with renewed confidence, commodity markets will remain volatile,” with oil prices, exchange rates and capital flows continuing to frustrate national policies.

He noted that the current economic reality has reinforced the urgency of fiscal risk management and the need to reduce Nigeria’s economic and revenue exposure to oil.

According to him, the non-oil economy has emerged as the backbone of Nigeria’s growth story, accounting for about 96 per cent of the country’s GDP and expanding at about four per cent.

“Services, agriculture, and other non-oil sectors are increasingly carrying the weight of the economy. More importantly, non-oil revenues now contribute nearly three-quarters of total government collections.

“This marks a significant, if gradual, departure from our historic dependence on volatile oil receipts. The task before us is to deepen this transition through competitive manufacturing, export diversification, and private sector investment,” he said.

The Vice President, who chairs NEC, acknowledged that although it was the Council’s first meeting for 2026, the consequences of the choices made in the previous year demand coherence, courage and consistency in the new year.

“This moment in our journey calls for neither triumphalism nor despair. What it calls for is perspective. The Nigerian economy has travelled a difficult road over the past year, but it has not travelled it without progress,” he pointed out.

Noting that the economy recorded significant growth in 2025, Senator Shettima attributed the performance to the visionary leadership of President Tinubu.

“In 2025, our economy expanded by 3.9 per cent, the fastest rate of growth in over a decade. Quarter by quarter, this momentum was evident: growth strengthened from 3.13 per cent in the first quarter to 4.23 per cent in the second, before settling at 3.98 per cent in the third.

“This is the outcome of hard decisions taken in difficult circumstances, and this is not a surprise with a visionary like His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, leading the charge,” he said.

He cautioned, however, that acceleration of growth must not be confused with adequacy, stressing that “a growth rate of 3.9 per cent, while encouraging, is not sufficient to decisively reduce poverty, generate jobs at the scale our population demands, or lift per capita incomes in a way that ordinary Nigerians can feel.

“With population growth at about 2.6 per cent annually, this rate of expansion leaves us with little room to absorb inflationary pressures or external shocks. Our ambition, therefore, must be higher,” he added.

As part of other deliberations, the Accountant-General of the Federation briefed the Council on account balances as at January 14, 2026, showing the Excess Crude Account at $535,823.39, the Stabilisation Account at ₦64.65 billion and the Natural Resources Account at ₦97.37 billion.

Council was also briefed on the implementation of President Tinubu’s directives on the Lagos-Calabar and Sokoto-Badagry Super Highways.

It was recalled that the President addressed NEC at its 150th meeting on July 31, 2025, underscoring the need to properly manage setbacks along the corridors to create investments and economic activities.

The NEC Secretariat, interfacing with the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, was informed that the process had commenced and is being overseen by the SGF’s office, while the Office of the Surveyor-General of the Federation has been moved to the Presidency in compliance with the directive.

On the new World Bank-Nigeria Country Partnership Framework, the World Bank Group outlined its support for Nigeria’s development goals, emphasising a shift to national programmes implemented at the state level and result-based financing to achieve impact at scale.

The presentation highlighted the “First 2,000 days” agenda, focusing on early childhood development, stunting reduction and human capital investment, and set out actions for 2026, including the development of a national, state-driven Early Years programme and alignment of budgets with emerging priorities.

Council lauded the proposed framework and resolved to work closely with the World Bank in implementing President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, committing institutional support to the initiative.

An update on Nigeria’s tax reform laws was also presented by the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, outlining efforts to address inequity, fix a fragmented and regressive tax system, and promote shared prosperity.

Council directed the committee to prepare a comprehensive brief for NEC’s conference in February to prepare sub-national governments for robust implementation and resolved to deepen engagement on the new tax regime.

  • Mother, daughter slam Davido for bullying over paternity controversy

Mother, daughter slam Davido for bullying over paternity controversy

A paternity dispute between Afrobeats star Davido and a 12-year-old girl, Anuoluwapo Mitchelle, has escalated, with the girl and her mother, Ayo Labinjoh, accusing the singer of bullying, threats and spreading false information.

Anuoluwapo and Labinjoh disputed Davido’s claim of conducting five DNA tests, insisting only one test was done and alleging it was fraudulent.

They also accused Davido of bullying and threatening to lock Labinjoh up, saying the controversy has affected Anuoluwapo’s mental health.

She reads: “Dear Nigerians: My dad Mr David Adeleke replied me earlier this evening. I was devastated on the way he cursed me out, bullied me and threatened to lock my mother up simply because I want to establish my identity.

“He also tweeted to the WORLD calling my mom a “bitch” he never met yet claiming he now had 5 (FIVE) DNA tests with me. First it was two, now it’s 5. He even said the last one was on my 10th birthday.

“According to my mom, we only went for one test which Chief Dr Deji Adeleke took us to which was FAKE as posted on her statement pinned on top of this page. Please read that statement above. I thank everyone who supported me emotionally this morning including the media”.

Labinjoh rejected Davido’s comments, saying she’s not his “baby mama” and is protecting her daughter.

She challenged Davido’s DNA claims, alleging the test was compromised, and said she’d seek international oversight for another test.

“First things first, my name is Ayo Labinjoh. I’m NOT Davido’s baby mama or a bitch. I am very protective of my daughter’s mental health after the level of bullying she went through for years. My daughter cried for days, fainted in school and went through psychotherapy.

“I realise this story has now gone global again and we have largely moved on. David Adeleke has largely ignored me for years because he thought he picked up a prostitute from GQClub in Ibadan. I was a waitress and not picked up on the streets. I come from a good home. My late father was a good man who worked more for the betterment of Nigeria before he was poisoned. My daughter is a very tech savvy intelligent achiever.

“I have no friends, I keep no friends and nobody in school is allowed to discuss her family with her. To my shock she was trending on X because her dad needed to call me a bitch that he’s never met yet he subjected himself to a DNA test 5X? Last time it was his lawyer Bobo Ajudua who brainwashed Nigerians that there were 2 tests done and I chose the hospital. Dr Deji Adeleke took us to a LAB not a hospital where Anu’s blood was drawn in 2014 then discarded behind our backs and fake result was printed.

“Wale Sobola was the lab technician who masked as “Dr Alex” and a brother to Sotayo Gaga a Nollywood actress was the one who wrote an epistle on his page 3 years ago that he never did a test for Anu and discarded the blood drawn blaming the wickedness for his life’s travails. We wasted our time, disrupted Anu’s mental health then they lied that we did two tests, now 5 and then he’s never met me. I’m not fighting for my daughter. My daughter is fighting for her identity.

“David chatted my daughter tonight threatening to lock me up, cursing Anu and repeatedly bullying her. David is a US citizen. I will request the US State Department to contact the Embassy in Lagos or Abuja to help us supervise and witness a clean independent DNA test. I will not say much for now. The language used was awful. My daughter did not beg to be here. Saying you’ve never met me or telling your family that I was a prostitute is wrong. Bullying my daughter is WRONG”.

Tinubu hails Akande at 87, describes ex-Gov as mentor, moral compass

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Friday paid glowing tribute to elder statesman, Chief Bisi Akande, describing him as a mentor and exemplary leader whose integrity, honesty and uprightness have continued to inspire Nigeria’s progressive movement.

In a birthday message to mark Chief Akande’s 87th anniversary, the President said the former governor of Osun State has remained a steadfast believer in values that ennoble the nation, noting that his personal example and moral clarity have shaped generations of leaders.

Tinubu expressed gratitude for Akande’s inspiration, advice and encouragement over the years, saying they played a significant role in his political journey and eventual emergence as President.

He also acknowledged Akande’s continued support for the administration and the implementation of the Renewed Hope Agenda.

“Having Baba Akande in my corner as a partner and ally has proved tremendously helpful,” the President said, adding that the elder statesman remains strong and unwavering even at 87.

Tinubu recalled Akande’s long record of public service and political leadership, describing him as a key pillar of Nigeria’s democratic evolution and progressive politics.

He noted that Akande’s leadership, industry, wisdom and labour of love contributed immensely to the growth of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the broader democratic project.

Akande, an accountant by training, began his professional career with British Petroleum before venturing into public service, inspired by the political vision and ideology of Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

His political journey saw him serve as Secretary to the State Government in the old Oyo State in 1979, Deputy Governor during the Second Republic and later Governor of Osun State from 1999 to 2003.

As the interim national chairman of the APC, Tinubu said, Akande laid the foundation for a political organisation that achieved a historic feat by unseating an incumbent government at the centre in 2015.

The President further praised Akande as a consistent advocate of democracy, social justice and good governance, noting that age has not diminished his commitment to national ideals or his readiness to stand for what is right.

“As he marks his 87th birthday, I pray for good health and renewed strength for Chief Akande,” Tinubu said.

Chief Akande, widely regarded as one of the leading figures of Nigeria’s progressive movement, remains an influential voice in national affairs and a reference point for principled leadership across party lines.

  • Why Casino Jackpots Are Gaining Popularity Among Nigerian Players

Why Casino Jackpots Are Gaining Popularity Among Nigerian Players

Spend a few minutes browsing Nigerian betting forums or scrolling through gaming discussions on social media, and a clear pattern emerges: the focus is changing. Although sports betting still dominates the scene, more players are now turning their attention to casino jackpots discussing big wins, popular games, trusted platforms, and, above all, reliable payouts.

This growing interest is not a coincidence. It mirrors larger shifts in how Nigerians consume digital entertainment, the rise of mobile-first habits, and the way betting platforms have adapted to meet evolving player expectations.

Below, we explore the key factors behind this trend and what it means for players who want to take advantage of Nigeria’s expanding casino jackpot market.

The Bangbet jackpot screen shows the Super, Grand, Major, Minor, and Mini prize pools.

Nigeria’s Digital Gaming Market Is Experiencing Rapid Growth

The numbers tell a compelling story. Nigeria’s betting industry has experienced significant market growth over the past few years, fueled by rising smartphone ownership, improved mobile internet access, and a young population that’s digitally native. More Nigerians than ever have the tools to participate in online gaming and they’re using them.

    Key Factors Driving Market Growth

Several factors are fueling the rapid growth of Nigeria’s betting market. The widespread use of smartphones means most players now engage with platforms on mobile devices, making mobile-friendly experiences a necessity rather than a luxury. At the same time, advances in local fintech have made deposits and withdrawals faster and more convenient, removing many of the barriers that once discouraged users.

The availability of high-quality gaming content has also played a major role, with players gaining access to hundreds of casino titles from leading providers such as Pragmatic Play, Spribe, and EGT. In addition, publicly shared winner announcements and payout stories on social media help build credibility and attract new interest. Nigeria’s youthful population, already comfortable with digital payments and mobile entertainment, further accelerates adoption.

Why Jackpots Are Capturing Player Attention

Casino jackpots offer something sports betting fundamentally can’t: the possibility of life-changing payouts from a single spin. While football bets are capped by fixed odds and limited by stake sizes, progressive jackpots accumulate without a theoretical limit. That asymmetric potential is a powerful draw.

The Psychology of the Jackpot Appeal

There’s something about watching a jackpot meter tick upward that sports betting can’t replicate. The visual representation of accumulated prizes, the knowledge that someone will eventually win the displayed amount, and the transparency of the pool—all of these elements create engagement that goes beyond individual spins.

    Documented Nigerian Jackpot Wins

The wins being announced aren’t hypothetical—they’re real payouts hitting real players:

₦11,000,000 Super Jackpot—Announced in late 2025, one of the largest documented wins

₦10,000,000 Major Jackpot – Highlighted in November 2025 winner announcements

₦5,000,000 WorldCupMadness Grand Prize—Won by Mr. Steven Okaga during promotional campaign

Multiple smaller jackpots are hitting regularly across various casino games and promotional periods

The Trust Factor: Why Verification Matters to Nigerian Players

Nigerian players have become sophisticated consumers. They’re not just looking for games—they’re looking for platforms they can trust with their money. This means verified licensing, transparent payouts, and operational accountability.

What Smart Players Verify Before Playing

    1. Valid NLRC Licensing—Federal regulatory approval from the National Lottery Regulatory Commission
    2. State-Level Authorization – Additional permits from authorities like the Lagos State Lotteries and Gaming Authority
    3. Published Winner Announcements – Regular, verifiable proof that jackpots are actually being paid out
    4. Fast Withdrawal Processing – Ability to access winnings without unreasonable delays
    5. Responsive Customer Support – Available channels for resolving issues when they arise

Bangbet Nigeria operates through Infinity Mobile Gaming and Entertainment Ltd., holding NLRC licenses (Sports Betting: 0001033, Online Casino: 00000016) plus Lagos State authorization (LSLGA/OP/OSB/BB050824). These credentials matter to players who want to know their chosen platform operates within established regulatory frameworks.

Games Nigerian Players Are Actually Playing

Not all casino games are created equal when it comes to Nigerian player preferences. Based on platform data and engagement patterns, certain titles consistently outperform others. The Bangbet casino jackpot games section features the titles attracting the most attention:

    Top-Performing Game Categories

Progressive Jackpot Slots (Wolf Gold, etc.)—Games with accumulating prize pools that can reach massive amounts

Classic Adventure Slots (Book of Ra)—Theme-based slots with engaging narratives and bonus features

Crash Games (Aviator)—Fast-paced games with escalating multipliers that appeal to players seeking quick engagement

Live Dealer Games (Auto Roulette, Live Baccarat)—Real-time gaming with human dealers streamed to mobile devices

Table Games (Casino Hold’em, Blackjack)—Strategy-based options for players who prefer skill elements

A woman is celebrating beside the Bangbet app, promoting the best odds and playing

    The Mobile-Centered Experience

Any discussion of Nigeria’s casino jackpot growth must take into account the dominant role of mobile devices. Most Nigerian players interact with betting platforms via smartphones, and this reality influences every aspect of the product, from the design of games to the handling of payments and the structure of user interfaces.

What a mobile-first approach delivers to players:

    • Games built for smooth interaction on touchscreens and compact screens
    • Dedicated Android apps alongside mobile-friendly access for iOS users
    • Seamless support for local payment options
    • Optimized data usage to perform well across different network conditions

What This Trend Tells Us About Nigerian Consumers

The rise of casino jackpots in Nigeria reflects broader shifts in digital consumer behavior that extend beyond the betting industry. Players want entertainment that’s mobile-accessible, offers real payout potential, and comes from platforms they can verify and trust.

The betting industry is responding to these preferences,, and jackpots are at the center of that response. Expect this trend to continue as platforms compete for player attention through bigger jackpots, more transparent winner announcements, and improved mobile experiences.
