Professor Bashir Kaka is the co-chair of the committee, with state commissioners and education officials as members.

The statement said the provost highlighted the institution’s evolution, noting that it began as the School of Health Technology in 2001, initially offering professional certificates and diplomas across five departments.

Over the years, it expanded its programs and student body, now accommodating 2,294 students and offering 25 courses, including certificates, National Diplomas, and Higher National Diplomas.

In 2014, it was upgraded to its current status as the College of Health Sciences and Technology.

In his remarks, Professor Bilbis explained that their visit was to assess the college’s facilities and resources.

He said the committee’s findings will guide recommendations to the government on how best to utilise these assets for the new university.

Shettima hails MIT’s global innovation footprint, urges African entrepreneurs to unite

    • …says Africa must turn vast potential into tangible jobs, prosperity
    • …as delegation briefs FG on Kuo Sharper Foundry Fellowship, expanded support for startups

Vice President Kashim Shettima on Wednesday lauded the transformative impact of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) on the global entrepreneurship and innovation ecosystem, saying its initiatives have helped raise over $1.5 billion and created more than 30,000 direct jobs in the last two decades.

Shettima, however, urged African entrepreneurs and professionals to close ranks to fully harness the continent’s enormous potential, stressing that collaboration is critical to leveraging MIT’s resource-mobilisation networks and job-creation opportunities.

The Vice President spoke while receiving a delegation from the Kuo Sharper Foundry Fellowship 2025–2026, led by MIT’s Executive Director for the Kuo Sharper Centre for Prosperity and Entrepreneurship, Dina Sherif, during a courtesy visit to the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

According to a statement issued by Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications, Office of the Vice President, Stanley Nkwocha, Shettima while calling for unity of purpose among African innovators, said Africa stands at a defining moment.

“Africa is the new frontier and the future belongs to the continent, but its people must unite to transform potential into tangible results that impact lives and livelihoods,” he said.

He added that while the continent is endowed with vast human and material resources, meaningful progress would only come through collective action.

“Africa is blessed with enormous human and material resources, but its people must fuse into one to benefit from the tremendous opportunities that abound across the continent,” the Vice President noted.

Shettima also disclosed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is deliberately leveraging available opportunities to transform Nigeria’s economy, stressing that bold leadership is required to achieve sustainable change.

JAC of SSANU, NASU lauds ASUU on signed agreement with FG

    • …urge FG to expedite action on pending renegotiation with NASU, SSANU

The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has commended the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) for signing the 2009 FGN-ASUU renegotiation agreement with the Federal Government.

The agreement was presented to the public on Wednesday by Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa at an event attended by former ASUU presidents, ministers, academics, senators, Rep members among others.

The committee urged the government to expedite action on the pending renegotiation with NASU, SSANU.

A statement signed by Prince Peters Adeyemi, General Secretary, NASU and Mohammed Ibrahim, President, SSANU and Chairman of JAC, said, “JAC of NASU and SSANU remains committed to the entrenchment of industrial harmony and sustainable communities in our Universities, and calls on the Federal Government to ensure expedited action in the ongoing renegotiation with NASU and SSANU, as any further delay after the signing of today’s agreement with our sister Union would be tantamount to a clear invitation to chaos, and the distortion of industrial peace which we have continued to maintain despite Government’s continued insensitivity to the University system and the gruesome conditions under which our members are made to work.

“JAC notes that timely conclusion of the ongoing renegotiation with NASU and SSANU would avert the breakdown of industrial peace and harmony in the system, and hereby advises the Federal Government not to stir the hornet’s nest through any form of delay tactics.”

  • SEC, police forge alliance to tackle ₦100tn market fraudsters

SEC, police forge alliance to tackle ₦100tn market fraudsters

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has sounded a stern warning against “shadow” financial predators who deceive citizens with promises of 200% returns within 30 days.

This alert came as the Commission secured a strategic partnership with the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to safeguard the nation’s capital market, which recently hit a historic ₦100 trillion capitalization milestone.

During a high-level meeting in Abuja on Wednesday, the Director General of the SEC, Dr. Emomotimi Agama, met with the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, to address the rising tide of sophisticated investment scams. Dr. Agama pointed out that these bad actors often hide their fraudulent intentions behind complex financial jargon.

“They cloak their deceit in the glamorous but misunderstood language of cryptocurrency and forex trading. They target the vulnerable, the optimistic, and the simply unsuspecting, leaving behind a trail of shattered lives, depleted pensions, and broken trust. This is not just a financial crime; it is a social menace that erodes public confidence in our entire financial system,” Dr. Agama said.

The Director General described the SEC as the “sentinel at the gate” of the formal markets but noted that regulatory oversight alone is insufficient to stop criminals who operate outside legal boundaries. He indicated that a gap exists between identifying these scammers and bringing them to justice, a space that the new partnership aims to eliminate.

“This is where our authority, as the SEC, meets its necessary complement: your power, your reach, and your mandate. The Nigeria Police Force is the primary law enforcement agency with the national presence, the investigative muscle, and the constitutional authority to track, apprehend, and bring these criminals to justice. Where we identify the illegality and the regulatory breach, you possess the apparatus for criminal investigation, arrest, and prosecution,” he told the IGP.

To modernize the fight against these syndicates, the SEC proposed a collaborative framework built on joint intelligence, capacity building, and a national public awareness campaign. Dr. Agama specifically called for a dedicated SEC-NPF task force to act as a “rapid-response unit” against emerging frauds. He also requested a formal Memorandum of Understanding with the Police Cyber Security Unit to monitor digital threats.

“Mr. Inspector General, the fight against financial crime is a fight for the soul of our economy. It is a fight for the widow who has lost her savings, the youth lured by fake crypto promises, and the retiree seeking a safe return. The SEC cannot win this fight alone. The Police should not have to decipher these complex schemes without specialist support. Together, however, we form an impenetrable shield,” the SEC DG added.

Responding to the proposal, IGP Kayode Egbetokun expressed the full readiness of the Force to back the Commission’s enforcement drive. He acknowledged that the SEC’s success is a pillar of the broader national economic recovery strategy.

“Your role in the Securities and Exchange Commission is very crucial to the Nigerian Economy, and with our supervision and support from the government, we will ensure economic recovery and growth. If the police unit in SEC is strengthened, it is going to make so much impact in your enforcement drive,” the IGP stated.

The Police Chief also took the opportunity to celebrate the capital market’s recent performance, noting that the crossing of the ₦100 trillion market capitalization mark is a monumental achievement for the country.

“That is a very huge one, and on behalf of the entire police force, I congratulate you on this great achievement. I am happy to also hear from you that you are ready to strengthen the police enforcement unit that are attached to the SEC. On this note, I approve the collaboration with the Cyber Security Centre of the NPF,” Egbetokun concluded.

The meeting ended with a mutual pledge to send a clear message to scammers that Nigeria’s investors are now under a unified shield of protection.
