Army recruitment will be thorough, says Buratai

    Our Reporter

Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, has said the Nigerian Army will uphold thoroughness in its recruitment processes to ensure that only qualified persons are recruited.

Buratai stated this on Monday at the final screening for 80 regular recruits at Falgore Forest training camp in Kano State.

The COAS said the exercise was a new approach to the screening and recruitment process of the Nigerian Army.

He added that it was borne out of the need to recruit the best.

Buratai said the lessons drawn from experiences in the field had made it imperative to recruit the best, noting that faulty process could lead to “faulty training and subsequently, faulty operations”.

According to him, the Nigerian Army is not ready for that again.

“As such, you must make up your mind that you are ready to serve your country as a soldier and you should be ready, anywhere you are deployed, after your passing out.

“All of you will go to Sambisa at the end of your depot training,” he said.

    Court grants Sowore N20m bail

    By Eric Ikhilae, Abuja

An Abuja Magistrates’ Court in Wuse Zone 2 has granted bail to the publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore, at N20 million.

Sowore and four others – Peter Williams, Sanyaolu Juwon, Emmanuel Bulus and Damilare Adenola – were arraigned before the court on January 4, 2021, on a three-count charge filed by the police, following which the court ordered their remand.

In a ruling on Monday, Magistrate Mabel Segun-Bello held that the defendants were entitled to bail, since they did not resist arrest while being apprehended by the police.

Segun-Bello ordered that first defendant (Sowore) be admitted to bail N20 million with two sureties in like sum.

She added that one of the sureties must be a civil servant not below Grade Level (GL) 12 in the Federal Civil Service.

The Magistrate also ordered that Sowore must report physically to the Chief Registrar of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) or any other person designated by the Chief Registrar, every Monday and Friday morning until the end of the case.

The Magistrates ordered that the four other defendants be granted bail after endorsing a bond of N1 million each.

Besides, each of them is to produce one surety in like sum, who “must be resident in Abuja with an identifiable workplace and residential address”.

“All defendants must not travel outside Abuja metropolis or outside the country pending the determination of the case,” Segun-Bello said.

Sowore and the four others were arrested on New Year’s eve for protesting the ban on crossover night.

They were arraigned on January 4, 2021 on a three-count charge bordering on conspiracy, unlawful assembly and public disturbance.

Fed #EndSARS panel suspends further sitting over ‘poor funding’

    By Eric Ikhilae, Abuja

The Independent Investigative Panel (IIP) constituted by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on the directive of the Federal Government to probe rights abuses and other unethical conducts by policemen has suspended its planned resumption.

The Nation learnt that members of the IIP, which was constituted in the wake of the #EndSARS protests, had observed the Christmas and New Year breaks and were expected to resume sitting yesterday.

But when our correspondent got to the panel’s sitting venue, the door to the hall was locked and there was no indication that it would sit.

Upon enquiry, it was gathered that members of the panel refused to resume sitting because they have not been paid their allowances.

A source close to the panel said members were expected to arrive in Abuja at the weekend preparatory to the resumption of the panel’s sitting yesterday, but they were told not to come yet because resources were inadequate.

“The panel has nine members who are from across the country. They come from Lagos, Gombe, Enugu, Rivers and other states. The panel is expected to sit for six months. It has sat for three months, having commenced sitting in October last year.

“The panel has received over 300 petitions and it is still receiving more across the country. It seems Nigerians prefer the panel to those sitting in the states.

“It (the panel) has a lot to attend to, but it is suffering from inadequate funding. That is why it may not resume sitting anytime soon, perhaps until the issue is addressed,” the source said.

But, the NHRC gave a different reason on why the panel suspended its sitting till “a date to be announced later”.

NHRC’s spokeswoman Mrs. Fatimah Agwai Mohammed said the postponement of the panel’s resumption was to enable it put in place measures for compliance with the Federal Government’s COVID-19 protocols.

“It is not true that funding is responsible. We decided to re-adjust the panel’s activities in view of the increasing threat of COVID-19. We don’t want to put our workers, panel members, complainants and their lawyers at risk.

“We have decided to suspend proceedings pending when we are able to put in place all the necessary measures to ensure we operate at no health risk to anybody.

“We are currently also re-adjusting our cause list to reduce the number of petitions to be taken daily, while also working on the duration of sitting daily,” she said.

The NHRC spokesperson also said the commission required additional funding to enable it put in place all it needs to ensure that everyone is safe before the panel resumes sitting.

Abducted kidnapper pays N1.5m to regain freedom

    By Nicholas Kalu, Abuja

A suspected kidnapper, who was abducted by another kidnapper, has secured his freedom with a N1.5 million ransom.

Mohammed Amodu paid N1.555 million before his captor Buba Babu set him free.

Force spokesman CP Frank Mba, who paraded the suspects alongside others in Abuja yesterday, said Babu was notorious for highway kidnapping around Abuja.

Babu, he said, was third-in-command of a kidnap syndicate headed by one Buji, who was neutralised by the police alongside the second-in-command.

Mba said Babu took leadership of the gang and was notorious for always killing kidnap victims.

Babu took Amodu into custody and shot him in the arm when his victim hesitated to pay.

Mba said Amodu had boasted he had charms and could not be shot and Babu shot him to show he was serious.

The police spokesman said Babu had strong links to a major terror group in northern Nigeria.

Amodu was known as “Confirm” and had a reputation for marksmanship in the underworld.

“Yet he was kidnapped and held and was released after he paid N1.55 million ,” Mba said.

Amodu said he was kidnapped after supplying 90 rounds of live ammuntion to Babu.

He said he witnessed an operation where Buba kidnapped 55 persons from a luxurious bus at a time.

Also speaking, Buba said he had been kidnapping for three years, adding that as a kingpin he sent his boys for operations along major roads and never operated within the town.

He said he broke off from Buji to form his own gang because of unfairness in sharing ransom money.

Police arrest 47 armed herdsmen in Oyo

    By Yinka Adeniran, Ibadan

The Oyo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of 47 armed herdsmen at Igangan.

The armed men were arrested by men of the State Joint Anti-Crime Security Patrol team code-named Operation Burst.

The suspected hoodlums, who were caught with guns and other weapons, were allegedly on a reprisal.

They were reportedly arrested in a convoy of buses.

Police spokesman Olugbenga Fadeyi, a Chief Superintendent, said the hoodlums claimed that they were trailing some kidnappers, who were about to collect ransom from relations of a kidnapped victim.

He said investigation has been intensified on the arrest, adding that the suspects have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Iyaganku, Ibadan.

Fadeyi said: “Yes, the arrested herdsmen have been transfered to the SCID, Iyaganku, Ibadan for discreet investigation.

“Though, it was alleged that the herdsmen claimed that they were trailing some kidnappers who were about to collect ransom from relations of a kidnapped victim.”

Sources said the men were arrested on Sunday morning at Ofiki River along Tapa/Igangan Road in Ibarapa North Local Government.

According to unconfirmed sources, the armed herdsmen were allegedly invited by their kinsmen to strike in the area following the raid carried out by men of the Oyo State Security Network Agency called Operation Amotekun in the axis on Saturday.

But Amotekun had said it raided the hideouts of kidnappers in the area on Saturday in an operation that led to the death of three persons, while one of the officers of the vigilance group, who also participated in the operation, was injured.

The security outfit said the raid was carried out in collaboration with members of the Miyetti Allah, vigilante group, hunters and others.

Efforts to confirm the report from the information officer of Operation Burst  proved abortive, as calls did not go through on the line.

But, the Coordinator of Odua People’s Congress in Oyo State, Rotimi Olumo, confirmed the incident.

Borno enrols 1,163 children of IDPs in schools

    Our Reporter

The Borno State government has enrolled 1,163 children of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), in schools in Mobbar Local Government Area.

Special Adviser to Governor Babagana Zulum on Communications and Strategy, Malam Isa Gusau said in a statement issued in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital yesterday, that the enrolment was supervised by Zulum in Damasak, headquarters of Mobbar Local Government Area during a three-day visit to the area.

He added that the measure was part of efforts to ensure that all children of school age were enrolled in school.

He said the governor was on a three-day visit to LGAs along the shores of Lake Chad for schools enrolment and other humanitarian support to returnees.

“In the third and final day of Zulum’s trip to Damasak, 1,163 children of IDPs were enrolled in primary schools as part of the governor’s enrolment campaigns.

“The pupils, who were from Guzamala and Abadam local government areas in Northern Borno had been out of school since their parents were displaced by Boko Haram insurgents when they attacked their communities.

“Zulum appealed to parents to allow their children to enrol in schools, saying that there were functional schools provided by the government,” he said.

  • Coalition insists on Kanu’s repatriation

    Coalition insists on Kanu’s repatriation

By Okodili Ndidi, Abuja and Chris Njoku, Owerrri

The Coalition of South East Professional Network in Nigeria and Diaspora (CSEPNND) has reiterated its call that leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, be extradited to Nigeria to face his trial for alleged treason.

It also chided IPOB spokesman, Emma Powerful, for referring to it as a non-existent organisation.

The coalition insisted it is a recognised and respectable body, and its President, Prof. Madumere Chika, a well known scholar with proven records.

A statement by Prof. Chika and National Secretary Anayo Uchemba said claims by IPOB that it was a creation of the Department of State Service (DSS) and non-existent was laughable and diversionary. It asked the separatist group to leave the DSS out of its woes.

The statement reads: “Our attention has been drawn to a watery and uncoordinated response to our call for Kanu’s extradition. Emma Powerful referred to our group as a creation of the DSS, and fake, non-existent.

“The pseudo Powerful, who has not been sighted anywhere, or known by anyoneanywhere in the world, also denied the existence of our President, Prof. Madumere Chika, who is recognised internationally.

“IPOB’s response through the non-existent Powerful is diversionary with intent to blackmail our treasured DSS and the Nigerian state from doing the needful on Kanu’s repatriation.

Read Also: ‘Why Fed Govt should move for Kanu’s extradition’

“We are a legitimate and independent non-violent group of Igbo professionals, with our head office in Awka, Anambra State. We are duly incorporated with all the relevant bodies in Nigeria and have been operating since 2014.

“We are not surprised of their claims as we have noticed overtime that it is the style of the proscribed IPOB to question the credibility or otherwise of anyone or group that speaks truth against it.

“We are not a creation of DSS and cannot be. Rather, we are a creation of one Nigeria and good conscience. We are a creation of Igbo who have paid their full dues in Nigeria and are pushing for better deals for their people.

“We denounce Nnamdi Kanu and his terrorist group. Kanu and his bunch of misinformed youths cannot speak for or lead the Igbo nation. We reiterate our demand for Kanu’s repatriation to Nigeria to face trial.”

But Kanu has described calls for his repatriation as a confirmation that IPOB is the greatest nightmare to the Federal Government.

“It’s an acknowledgement that IPOB has roundly defeated the government in the battle of ideas,” he said.

Kanu, who spoke through Powerful, said: “Why DSS has chosen to continue to disgrace itself by creating these fake groups is beyond comprehension. Such a weak and tactless strategy will not distract us. If indeed such a group exists, why can’t they conduct a live news conference to convince the people of Biafra they are real?

“If the so-called CSEPNND is real and identifiable, let them show us their faces, give us their contact address so we can take them seriously. If the self-acclaimed leaders of CSEPNND – the imaginary Prof. Madumere Chika and Anayo Uchemba – are not robots, let them mention their communities and kinsmen.

“We can say without equivocation that there is no Igbo professor with the name Madumere Chika, and there is no Igbo professional association known as CSEPNND. This is purely a DSS fictitious creation meant to deceive the gullible and undiscerning. We challenge them to disclose their address and location for enquiries and confirmation if indeed they are not fake…”
