Coalition warns against intimidating Akpabio, NDDC administrator

Bassey Anthony, Uyo and Mike Odiegwu, Port Harcourt

NIGER Delta Conscience Coalition (NDCC) has admonished Ijaw youths against intimidating appointees from Akwa Ibom State heading the Niger Delta affairs.

The group specifically warned that no harm should come to the Niger Delta Minister Godswill Akpabio, and interim administrator of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) Effiong Akwa.

President of NDCC Aniefiok Obot, who addressed a news conference in Uyo yesterday, said the antagonism expressed by Ijaw youths against Akwa’s appointment was ‘uncalled for, sectional, divisive and unacceptable’.

The group said it would not watch certain groups, sections and communities in other Niger Delta states ‘harass’ Akpabio and Akwa and other appointees from Akwa Ibom.

He said: “This group takes exception to the entitlement attitude displayed by certain groups, sections and communities against and towards our appointed representatives in running the Niger Delta, whether it is at the centre or at the regional level of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

“The voiceless and faceless orchestrators of anarchy towards Akpabio and Akwa should either desist or think twice because sometimes the lion that would consume the deer may not even be the one that roars.

“We are watching events keenly, and no harm should come to the persons and offices of both men through these orchestrated protest or their faceless sponsors.”

The group pledged its unalloyed support to the President Muhammadu Buhari administration, and urged all Niger Delta people to align with Akpabio and Akwa to move the region forward.

The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), Akpakip Oro Special Chapter (Eastern Zone), has congratulated Akwa on his appointment as Sole Administrator of the NDDC.

The group described Akwa’s appointment as well deserved, and praised President Muhammadu Buhari for giving such responsibility to a member of the council.

A statement by Vice Chairman Christian Okponung, and Secretary Samuel Edem, said Akwa’s appointment was in recognition of his dedication and meritorious service to the country.

It reads: “The Ijaw Youths Council (IYC), Akpakip Oro Special Chapter (Eastern Zone), congratulates our own son and member of the council, Effiong Akwa, as the Sole Administrator of the NDDC. We also thank President Buhari for the well-deserved appointment.”

An Akwa Ibom-based activist, Steve Ntukekpo, has urged the Federal Government to tighten security around Akwa.

Ntukekpo, in a statement yesterday, said Akwa should be protected from danger which may emanate from threats by those opposed to his appointment.

According to him, the recent orgy of protests against Akwa, and invasion of the Ministry of Delta Affairs Secretariat in Abuja, by the Ijaw Youths Council (IYC), was distasteful and against the spirit and unity of the Niger Delta.

He said: “…the so called protest is laced in the garbs of small-mindedness, micro-ethnic blindness, and reckless sense of entitlement from a sect which is a fraction in the Niger Delta mix.

“It also portrays the fact that those who partook in that kangaroo ‘chasing out’ do not have any inkling of what constitutes the Niger Delta, but blindly acting out scripts of their sponsors whose illegal racketeering had been halted with Akpabio’s sincere intentions to clear the Augean stables of corruption and funds diversion in the Niger Delta affairs.”

Security beefed up for Biden’s inauguration after riot

UNITED States (U.S.) authorities plan to erect a temporary fence around the Capitol for President-elect Joe Biden’s inaugural ceremony, and beef up security for the event in general after a mob of President Donald Trump’s supporters was able to storm the building.

The Pentagon will deploy more than 5,000 National Guard troops from several states to Washington to stay through the Jan. 20 inauguration, according to a Pentagon official. That comes in addition to 1,100 District of Columbia National Guard troops mobilised to confront the violent mob on Wednesday.

In addition, officials said a 7-foot (2.1 meter) non-scalable fence will be erected around the Capitol and remain in place through the inauguration.

“We’re obviously concerned about the 20th. We’re concerned about the days leading up to the 20th,” Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser said yesterday. “But I think we as Americans have to also ask ourselves, is this going to be a new normal in America?”

The steps on the west side of the Capitol, where Biden will take the oath of office, was the scene of violence Wednesday as thousands of Trump supporters clashed with police trying to hold them back with tear gas, batons, and flash-bang devices.

Hundreds of protesters eventually broke through barricades and occupied scaffolding and other infrastructure already in place for the presidential inauguration. Many chanted and waved Trump flags, and some used the scaffolding to enter the Capitol building itself, where lawmakers were in the midst of an historic vote to certify Biden’s election.

Senator Roy Blunt, a Missouri Republican who chairs the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies, told reporters that security for the event needs a “really hard look” in the wake of the riot.

“There’s always a significant security concern there,” said Blunt.

Lee Evans: Four-year ban squashed, AFN to pay N46.4m

     Robert Egbe

A FEDERAL High Court in Lagos has nullified a four-year ban imposed on an American 1968 double Olympic champion, Dr Lee Edward Evans, by the Athletes Federation of Nigeria (AFN) in 2014.

Justice Ayokunle Faji held that the suspension – imposed while Evans was working as an athletics consultant for the Lagos State Government – was unlawful and inconsistent with natural justice.

The judge set aside the report of the AFN’s anti-doping committee fair hearing panel which sat on February 17, 2014, for being speculative, devoid of fair hearing and having been arrived at in a manner unknown to law. Justice Faji also awarded N46,430,000.00 in favour of the former Olympian, being the total money and special damages, which he ought to have earned within the four years that his appointment was unlawfully suspended.

The judge also restrained the AFN from further preventing the 73-year-old from practicing his trade or profession in Nigeria. Evans, the first human to run 400m under 45 seconds and whose world track records at the Mexico ‘68 Games stood for 20 years, was punished alongside youth coach Abass Rauf who got a life ban.

CAF Champions League: ‘Our early goal unsettled Enyimba’

     Sunny Nwankwo, Aba

AL-MERRIKH coach Didier Gomes Da Rosa said the early goal against Nigeria side Enyimba in Aba proved to be handy in their quest to qualify for the group stage of the CAF Champions League.

Enyimba failed in their quest to overturn a 3-0 deficit suffered in Sudan after they could only manage a 2-1 win at home to crash out of the CAF Champions League 4-2 on aggregate.

Saif Terry, who fired a hat-trick in the first game in Sudan, opened scoring in Aba after just seven minutes when he punished some slack defending by the home team. A brace from Victor Mbaoma in either half gave the People’s Elephant a win but it was not enough and so the two-times African champions will now have to drop to the second-tier CAF Confederation Cup final playoffs.

“We knew very well before the match that if we were able to score, things would be very easy. Fortunately we scored very early in the match and that made it easier for us,” the Frenchman said, showering praises on the ability of his players to stick to their tactics.

“We controlled the attacking force of Enyimba as much as we could, though we conceded a penalty, but the main target was to score and that was exactly what we got. We knew that if we scored a goal in the match, Enyimba would find it hard to score up to five goals. The former coach of Ismaily of Egypt added: “Enyimba is a good side, that was why we transited the ball as soon as we got the ball and that was why we came out victorious.

“In the two matches, we have been able to show that we are better than Enyimba.”

On the delay tactics by the players Da Rosa said “I don’t like my players falling down. It is very important to be more mature, but I don’t want to criticize my players today.

“In the past four years we have been able to go through the group stage of Champions League, it is a joy that we are back on the group stage of the Champions League.”

ANTHONY Joshua admits he is “coming towards the end of my career” and has hinted that he will have a maximum of “five years left” in the sport before retiring.

The 31-year-old world heavyweight champion could be approaching the most significant period of his career, with on-going negotiations about two massive unification fights against Tyson Fury in 2021.

Since making his pro debut in 2013, Joshua has become a two-time champion, having regained his WBA, IBF and WBO titles in a 2019 rematch with Andy Ruiz Jr before defending them with a knockout win over Kubrat Pulev last month.

“This isn’t the start of my career. I’m coming towards the end of my career,” Joshua told Sky Sports News.”I’m not someone who lives in the moment and thinks that everything is just like for now. I’m always planning ahead so I’m coming towards the end of my career.

“Five years left and that’s basically an Olympic cycle. I’ve got an Olympic cycle and a little bit more left, so when you see the next Olympics happen is when I’ll be coming to the end of my career and the next generation will be coming through.”

Fury turned professional in 2008, nearly five years before Joshua, who recently suggested that his British rival should also be thinking about hanging up his gloves.

“Fury has been professional much longer than me. He should be looking to retire soon,” Joshua had told Sky Sports.”If he wants to cement his legacy, I’m here and ready. I’ve built myself into this position.”

But the 32-year-old Fury told Sky Sports last year that he wanted a lengthy world title reign like Wladimir Klitschko.

Tesla tycoon Musk declared world richest person

SPACEX and Tesla founder Elon Musk has surpassed Amazon founder Jeff Bezos as the richest person in the world, his fortune having grown to over $185 billion.

The billionaire seemed surprised by the announcement.

Musk was officially named the richest person on the planet yesterday, not-so-narrowly edging out Bezos thanks to a 4.8 percent boost in Tesla’s stock value.

The South African-born electric car purveyor’s net worth is now an eye-popping $188.5 billion, while Bezos has “only” $184 billion.

The rapid growth of Musk’s personal fortune over the last year has surely made him the envy of his Silicon Valley peers, but his disinterested response to the news on Twitter suggested he wasn’t really paying attention to the details.

“How strange,” the billionaire remarked, before tweeting he was going “back to work.”

Not everyone was excited about Musk pulling down more per year than they’d ever see in their lifetimes, of course.

Many had ideas as to how he should spend his fortune, from ending world hunger and homelessness to donating to random Twitter users.

But several users celebrated his accomplishments – including dethroning Bezos.

Bezos and Musk aren’t just tech industry competitors – both are determined to bring humanity back into space, though Musk has focused more on a potential Mars colony and Bezos is more interested in building reusable rockets to bring down the cost of sending materials into orbit.

Benzema faces trial in ‘sex tape’ case

REAL Madrid forward Karim Benzema will face trial for his alleged involvement in blackmailing former France team-mate Matthieu Valbuena in a sex tape scandal, the Versailles prosecutors office has said.

The 33-year-old Benzema will stand trial on the charge of conspiracy to attempt blackmail. Four other people will also stand trial.

Benzema denies any wrong doing. He has not played for France since the affair came to light while both players were in the France squad for the 2014 World Cup.

Criticisms trail military invasion of Ghana’s parliament

    Our Reporter

FORMER President John Dramani Mahama has joined other Ghanaians in condemning the military invasion of the Chamber of Parliament on Thursday, following the continued failure of lawmakers-elect to elect the Speaker for the Eighth Parliament.

The soldiers, numbering about 20, emerged in the Chamber together with armed policemen ostensibly to restore calm in the Chamber.

The well-armed security detail, with some having facemasks, came to the floor of Parliament at about 3.30 a.m. reportedly on the orders of the former Minister of Defence, Mr. Dominic Nitiwul.

The appearance of the military rocked the nerves of the legislators, especially members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Singing the national anthem and other patriotic songs, the NDC MPs-elect resisted the presence of the military men in the Chamber, asking them to leave.

Standing on their ground, the NDC MPs were heard saying that until the military left the Chamber, no vote for the next Speaker would take place.

Soon after the military had vacated the chamber, calm was restored as MPs-elect resumed their seats. Later, the Marshal of Parliament told the House that it was his duty to protect the Members of Parliament.

He invited the leadership of both the NDC and the New patriotic Party to a closed-door meeting to deliberate on ways to ensure the smooth conduct of the Speaker elections.

About 30 minutes later, the leadership came back to the House to advise their members to endeavour to abide by the rules governing the voting processing.

However, Mahama condemned the Member of Parliament (MP) for Tema West Carlos Ahenkorah for snatching ballot papers during the counting process to decide the Speaker of the House.

In a congratulatory message to Alban Bagbin on his election as the Speaker of the 8th Parliament of the 4th Republic, the flagbearer of the NDC in the 2020 elections called on Parliament to investigate the military invasion of the House.

“Congratulations Rt. Hon. Alban Sumani Kingsford Bagbin on your election as the Speaker of the 8th Parliament of the 4th Republic,” he wrote on his Facebook page.

“The attempt to snatch ballot papers by the MP-elect for Tema West and the invasion of the Chamber by armed military personnel are images one had never expected to see in our 4th Republican Parliament.

“The recent use of the military in civil democratic processes has become a major worry and gives the impression that this administration is continually seeking to resurrect the exorcised ghosts of our military past. Parliament must conduct an investigation into the two incidents and exact appropriate sanctions”, he stated.

A security analyst Col. Festus Aboagy (retd) blame that the invasion on the part of service commanders.

For him, it is dangerous for Ghana’s democracy to involve the military in matters that ought to be handled by the police.

Speaking in an interview with Accra-based Joynews yesterday morning, Col. Aboagy said service commanders have the professional responsibility to advise politicians as to what they can do and what they cannot do.

He stressed that “because we have been failing to over many years in telling politicians where the lines must be drawn, that is why the politicians are emboldened all the time to exert pressure in issues that the military must not be involved, and is a danger.”

The National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) Member of Parliament for Tamale Central constituency, Ibrahim Mohammed Murtala, also called on the parliamentary leadership to properly investigate the military invasion of Ghana’s parliament during the election of a Speaker for the house in the early hours of Thursday, January 7, 2021.

He said it was unnecessary that armed military personnel invaded the parliamentary chamber since parliament has its own security to handle matters in that respect.

The Tamale Central MP was speaking to Accra-based Joynews in an interview at the Parliament house in Accra on Thursday, January 7, 2021.

He alleged that it was the Defence Minister Dominic Nitiwul who called the military to the Parliamentary chamber, pointing out that he (Murtala) confronted him when he was making the call.

But, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was sworn into office for a second four-year term yesterday as President.

The Chief Justice Kwasi Anin Yeboah conducted the swearing-in, taking him through the required oaths.

President Akufo-Addo was given the mandate to govern Ghana for the next four years from January 7, 2021, to January 6, 2025, following the declaration by the Electoral Commission (EC) that he was the winner of the presidential election held yesterday, December 7, 2020.

Nana Akufo-Addo who contested the election on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP won with 6,730,413 votes which represents 51.295 per cent of the total valid votes cast.

His closest competitor, Mahama got 6,214,889 votes representing 47.366 per cent.

The total valid votes cast was 13, 434,574 representing 79 per cent of the total registered voters.
