EU, UK agree deal on Brexit trade

By Simeon Ebulu, Group Business Editor

The long-awaited trade deal between the European Union (EU) and United Kingdom (UK), following Britain’s exit from the EU, came to a successful conclusion on Thursday.

It followed months of long and intense negotiations between the parties.

At a Downing Street news conference, British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson said: “We have taken back control of our laws and our destiny.” Although the detail of the agreement has yet to be released, the Prime Minister claimed it was a “good deal for the whole of Europe”.

The UK is set to exit EU trading rules on Thursday – a year after officially leaving the 27 nation bloc.

The deal will mean big changes for business, with the UK and EU forming two separate markets and the end of free movement.

Johnson admitted that the agreement reflected what both sides wanted to achieve The trade deal will come as a major relief to many British businesses, already reeling from the impact of coronavirus, who feared disruption at the borders and the imposition of tariffs, or taxes on imports.

As the deal was announced, Johnson – who had repeatedly said the UK would “prosper mightily” without a deal – tweeted a picture of himself smiling with both thumbs lifted in the air, according to Reuters

In Brussels, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said: “This was a long and winding road but we have got a good deal to show for it,” adding that the deal was “fair” and balanced” adding that it is “time to turn the page and look to the future”. The UK “remains a trusted partner,” she stated.

Boris Johnson said the £668 billion a year agreement would “protect jobs across this country” and “enable UK goods to be sold without tariffs, without quotas in the EU market”. He nevertheless acknowledged that he had been forced to yield ground on his demands on fishing.

The UK Chief Trade negotiator Lord Frost said the full text of the free trade agreement would be published soon. The UK Parliament will be recalled on 30 December to vote on the deal – it will also need to be ratified by the European Parliament.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer – who campaigned against Brexit – said his party would vote for the deal in the Commons, ensuring it will pass, saying it was “a thin agreement” that “does not provide adequate protections” for jobs, manufacturing, financial services or workplace rights and “is not the deal the government promised.

“But with no time left to renegotiate, the only choice was between “this deal or no deal,” he added. No deal would have “terrible consequences for this country and the Labour Party cannot allow that to happen”.

Even with the much-troubled and very traumatic year 2020, occasioned by the COVID-19 pandemic, which outrageously set back many things across all sectors, the entertainment sector-nay-music industry, many of these wave-making artistes still proved their mettle with a more promising future ahead.

With the very impressive and ladder-climbing performances of these artists during the out-going pandemic year, it will not be out of place that these artistes, under a more favourable atmosphere and high-tech productions under able management, will create more waves and distinctive works, all things being equal.

Governors urge citizens to share love at ‘Xmas

    Our Correspondents

Governors as well as other eminent Nigerians on Thursday felicitated with fellow citizens on today’s Christmas celebration.

They urged Nigerians to put their hope in God and sacrifice for fellow beings, as exemplified by Jesus Christ, to enable the country attain greatness in the comity of nations.

Chairman of Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF) and Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi said: “Christmas is a season that explains the depth of God’s love for mankind and exemplary sacrifice that we should emulate in our daily relationship with our neighbours.

“This season is another opportunity to increase our acts of kindness, touch the less privileged in our society, appreciate God for the outgoing year and pray for a more prosperous new year.

“Therefore, this Christmas means so much more than just mere merriment. It is a veritable avenue to extend love to the underprivileged who are disadvantaged in several ways.”

Osun State Governor Adegboyega Oyetola said: “This year’s celebration has presented us an opportunity to once more show love and share.

“Also, Christmas symbolises hope as it marks the birth of Jesus Christ, the prince of peace. I, therefore, urge all Nigerians to use this period to pray for peace, unity and prosperity in the country.

“While this is traditionally a time for joy and celebration, I urge us all to do so in moderation. This period actually calls for introspection and continued prayers for our dear State and nation, taking into consideration the continued rise in cases of COVID-19.

“We must ensure we be our brothers’ keepers by adhering to all Covid19 protocols.”

Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike urged Christians to remain committed to the worthy ideals exemplified by the birth of Jesus Christ.

He advised the residents to use the season to deepen their faith in God, adding that He has solutions to all societal challenges.

Plateau State Governor Simon Lalong said: “The world and indeed Plateau State have gone through tremendous challenges occasioned by the Coronavirus pandemic, which has significantly altered human interaction and impacted negatively on the economy.

“This has resulted in hardship to both governments and citizens. Nevertheless, we have collectively demonstrated resilience and hope. This should continue, especially as we mark the birth of Jesus Christ, who primarily came to give hope to mankind.”

Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma said: “…I acknowledge God’s mercy. When I remember the circumstances of our emergence when the weak-hearted had given up hope, I acknowledge God’s hands in raising for Himself angels that dispersed the darkness that was enveloping our state.

“It is to the glory of God that when man fell from grace through a woman, He also redeemed man through another woman, the Blessed Virgin Mary. When the mighty thought the power was theirs to forcefully take, God looked at us, the least of them all, and crowned us to lead His people of Imo State.”

Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq advised the residents to do their bits in flattening the curve of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Celebrations in approved size of social gatherings without observing the precautions such as social distancing, use of face masks and regular hand washing can very quickly turn to avenues for super spread of the virus and undermine the gains we have recorded so far in the fight against this common enemy. Christmas is a season of love and giving. And I think the best way to show love and the best gift to give this season is the gift of health to ourselves and our loved ones during this Yuletide season and beyond.”

Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki said: “As we celebrate this season of love, we must be circumspect so as not to lose our loved ones. Except it is absolutely necessary to go out, please stay at home.

    ‘Retaining service chiefs fuelling corruption’

By Nwanosike Onu, Awka and Emma Elekwa, Onitsha

The Catholic Bishop of Awka Diocese, Paulinus Ezeokafor, has joined calls for the removal of service chiefs.

He said refusal to replace the service chiefs was fuelling corruption which the government claims to be fighting.

The cleric, in his Christmas message, queried the rationale for the government’s refusal to replace the chiefs despite repeated calls.

Ezeokafor alleged that certain individuals were feeding fat on the country’s security situation, and insisted that firing the service chiefs would reduce corruption.

He said: “I know that the fundamental responsibility of government is security and, where such is lacking, it is expected that those in authority should resign.

“When Muhammadu Buhari became president, he promised to tackle insecurity. The same promise he repeated in his second term. Yet we keep witnessing insecurity daily. First was the kidnapping of Chibok girls, followed by the Dapchi girls. Then the Kankara boys. To travel by road now is near impossible. Unfortunately, travelling by air is expensive. Yet our budget on security is alarming.

“We’re just making mockery of ourselves before the international community. Besides, when we negotiate with these criminals, we’re reinforcing them because they will use the ransom proceeds to buy more ammunition.

“Pampering the service chiefs is unhealthy, having exhausted their ideas. If these things are not checked, it will keep recycling. If the service chiefs are sincere, they will resign. But since they’re feeding on it, it will be difficult for them.”

Anglican Archbishop of the Niger Alexander Ibezim has described this Christmas as a miracle following the myriad challenges that characterised the year.

He said: “God came down in form of man to reconcile us back to him over 2,000 years ago, people still celebrate Christmas amidst challenges, proving that nobody can fight God.

“God, Emmanuel, is there with us to fight for us, encourage us, still in charge in our broken world. We need to nurture the poor, helpless and unemployed, same way baby Jesus was nurtured at birth. Use your resources to bring hope to others.”

The Nation award haul imposes obligations, says Olatunji Dare

By Joseph Jibueze, Deputy News Editor

The Nation Editorial Adviser, Olatunji Dare, on Thursday said the newspaper’s award haul this year imposes obligations on it.

He urged the management and staff members to sustain their place in the frontline of a competitive field.

Dare, Professor of Journalism Emeritus, in a statement issued from Peoria, Illinois, said: “We were still digesting our rich harvest (Newspaper of the Year, Editor of the Year, etc) at the Diamond Awards for Media Excellence (DAME) and the obligations they impose on us when, a week later, we pulled in a more abundant haul at the Nigeria Media Merit Award (NMMA).

“The NMMA reaffirmed our status as the Newspaper of the Year. It is a measure of the quality and comprehensiveness of our submissions that we won 14 awards from 38 nominations, the most in the competition. Where we did not clinch the trophy outright was judged worthy of mention.

“What a way to end a traumatic year, in which COVID-19 dealt our editorial and commercial operations a punitive blow from which we are yet to recover, and arsonists under the cover of the #EndSARS protests put our facilities to the torch.

“The credit belongs to editors, writers, photographers, designers and illustrators. It is a tribute to the resourcefulness of management and the resilience of the rank and file of the editorial and support staff that we could garner so many trophies under daunting circumstances.

“We are primed to enter a new year with optimism and with confidence in our ability to rise to the challenges ahead, not least the challenge of sustaining our place in the frontline in a dynamic, competitive field. Congratulations, again. Take care, and stay safe.”
