    Eaglets’ performance thrills NSC boss

The Director- General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye, has showered praises on the Golden Eaglets for the team’s heartwarming performance against Iraq on Friday.

The three-time world champions trounced Iraq 5-0 in the last group F match of the ongoing FIFA U- 17 World Cup played at the Rashid Stadium, Dubai.

The NSC boss, who has never hidden his trust in the abilities of the Eaglets and their coaches, was happy that the team bounced back from the 3-3 draw recorded against Sweden on Tuesday.

He said, “The Golden Eaglets had been wonderful from the African qualifiers up till this World Cup in United Arab Emirates and I am very proud of the team. They had initial scare in Tuesday’s second group (F) match but I still had confidence in them despite the 3-3 draw.

“The coaches of the team led by Manu Garba have also proved their worth by lifting the morale and psychology of this team which reflected in the way they torn Iraq to shreds most especially in the first half of the game. It also showed that the team has strong character by bouncing back from the initial scare against Sweden in just three days.

“The leadership of the National Sports Commission is happy with the team and their coaches and we are encouraging them to go all the way to win this trophy for Nigeria a record fourth time. I am also using this medium to commend the Nigeria Football Federation for preparing this team well through their pre-tournament camping in Calabar and later in Dubai.

  • Daily walk prevents breast cancer

    Daily walk prevents breast cancer

New research has found women who walk an hour every day can reduce their risk of developing breast cancer. Even more encouraging, more frequent and vigorous exercise was found to provide additional protection.

The study, published in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention followed more than 73, 000 women over 17 years. Researchers found a 14 per cent reduced risk when compared to women with sedentary lifestyles.

Exercise consisting of over seven hours per week was associated with a 25 per cent reduced risk.

This is encouraging news for women who aren’t very active or sporty. “The nice message here is, you don’t have to go out and run a marathon to lower your breast cancer risk, …go for a nice, leisurely walk an hour a day to lower risk,” says Alpa Patel, senior epidemiologist.

Walking appears to help cut down the amount of body fat that is directly linked to cancer-stimulating hormones such as insulin and oestrogen. Being physically active can improve insulin control and burn fat in high-risk areas of the body. Excess fat around the waist may affect one’s breast cancer risk more than the same amount of fat around the hips or thighs.

Strength training (exercising with weights) is also beneficial to help burn off abdominal fat. Spot exercising, such as doing sit-ups, can tighten abdominal muscles, but is not an effective way to lose belly fat according to Harvard Medical School.

“Diet is also important. Pay attention to portion size, and emphasize complex carbohydrates (fruits, vegetables, and whole grains) and lean protein over simple carbohydrates such as white bread, refined-grain pasta, and sugary drinks,” they added.

Unhealthy saturated and trans fats have also been linked to abdominal obesity and one’s breast cancer risk. Saturated and trans fats are commonly found in highly processed foods that are often high in energy and low in essential nutrients.

All fats are not harmful to one’s health and are actually needed to lose weight, balance hormones and fight cancer. Unsaturated, or healthy fats are found in polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats. These fats are found primarily in fish, plant oils, seeds and nuts – all of which have been
shown to lower one’s risk of developing breast cancer.

Drastically cutting the amount of energy in one’s diet, especially while engaging in regular exercise is not recommended. Too little units of energy can force the body into starvation mode, slowing one’s metabolism and ironically storing more fat around the mid-section.

The best weapon in overcoming breast cancer is the ability to prevent it from occurring in the first place. It’s important to apply proactive lifestyle habits in one’s life versus reactively trying to treat or reverse cancer when it could be too late.

Delta loses bid to retrieve Ibori‘s $15m

…Court orders its forfeiture to FG

The Delta State Government failed on Friday in its bid to claim the $15 million allegedly offered as bribe by former governor James Ibori to officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

A Federal High Court (FHC) in Abuja ordered that the money, estimated at N4.6b, be forfeited to the Federal Government.

Justice Gabriel Kolawole, in a judgment held that the earlier denial by Ibori that he owned the money, and the failure of Delta State to prove that the fund was removed from its treasury, qualified the money as an “unclaimed property.”

The judge further held that in view of the circumstances surrounding the case, where people were reluctant to openly claim its ownership, the money qualified to be forfeited to the Federal Government “as fund derived from unlawful act,” as stipulated under the Money Laundering and EFCC Acts 2004.

The judge wondered why no one claimed the money between April 25 and 26, 2007 when EFCC said the money was offered its officials by Ibori and July 27, 2012 when the FG advertised in a national daily that the fund was to be forfeited.

Justice Kolawole, who dubbed the case – “the unclaimed $15m scandal,” – queried why the Delta State government waited until a July 27 advertorial published by the FG, before it decided to claim ownership of the money.

The EFCC had in April 2007 accused Ibori of offering its then Chairman, Nuhu Ribadu and some others officials $15 million bribe in a bid to stop his prosecution.

  • What a man wants in a woman

What a man wants in a woman

It is true that men generally have great expectations from their ideal women – there are some unique features and attributes he desires and some others he cannot tolerate or withstand.
It is also true that as men are different, so are their preferences for their women. While some men like independent women who are very ambitious; some prefers women with good character, while others simply want women who can satisfy them sexually.
Here are some things men desires from their women:Adewole Okesina wants his woman to be presentable and one that possesses a good home training.

He said” She should know how to relate with people and always respect me in the presence of others. She should be ready to face anything that comes our way whether good or bad.”For ladies who do not know how to cook, Okesina will not consider. Hear him:”She must be a good cook and let me know whenever she is offended so there won’t be quarrels.

Having been married for years, Mr. Femi Dada is of the opinion that men prefer women that will care for them anytime. Apart from being caring, Dada wants his woman to “be God fearing, decent and neat. She should always take care of her environment.”

According to Dada, men are faced with challenges at work and then come home feeling bothered wanting to share with their spouse.

He urged a woman that has a listening ear to listen to whatever bothers her husband so he can be relieved, “A woman that will take me for who I am and accommodate my shortcomings is what I need. An unselfish woman that values children and one that will care for my extended family. Not just someone that will say ‘I and my husband alone,” he added. Not ruling out the spiritual aspect to relationships, Dada advises husbands and wives to have the love and fear for God.

Like Dada, Mr. Henry Mgbeme wants a woman that is caring and supportive. A woman who will not depend on him for everything she needs nor engage in worldly activities.
For Mgbeme, he wants a modest woman. “I prefer her simple and modest – I would not like my woman to use jewellery.”Going the African tradition, Mr. Atumeyi Uwanni, a married man for years, prefer a woman well nurtured in her traditions and must not be canal. This he says is a typical African woman.

Speaking further, Uwanni said “A man can be flirt, known to the woman but she can absorb and manage. But no man can manage the flirt character of a woman.
Also, Uwanni, frowns at women with low hygiene manners.
He advised that such a woman should strive to imbibe healthy lifestyle.Uwanni was also of the view that, “A woman should be good in all ramifications.”

For those women who do not exhibit good character, he advised that such a woman should read the last chapter of the Book of Proverbs as a guideline to managing her home.
To him,” Marriage is friendship. Friendship is companionship. Companionship is what a man looks out for in a woman. If there is no relationship, there is no fellowship. The relationship between the spouses metamorphoses into fellowship.”
For nagging and callous women, Uwanni says such persons are not welcome by men. Such women, he says will not welcome a man’s ‘people’ and friends into his house.Uwanni therefore proposes for love in a relationship. This he says covers a multitude of sin. Love, he pointed out, should not be only in bed but also outside bed.

On his part, Henry Ose wants a sincere woman that he can trust anywhere, anytime and any day.
He said “Women can fool men to the brim if they want to. A girl giving her body doesn’t guarantee her love for you. She might as well be fooling you.”I don’t want a woman that will still have feelings for her ex-lover because she would never want to let him go,” Ose added.

Reeling the preferences he wants in a woman, Lanre Bello said that he wants a woman from a good background, Christian with a good behavior that can accommodate his friends and people.

Bello did not also fail to mention that his ideal woman “must be a good cook and be very good in bed. For, if she is an amateur, then it’s going to be hell for the man.”Dami Israel Ojo wants a woman of good character. To him: “It is not all about the beauty or make-up. The good character is the beauty of a woman and this is what will stand the test of time when the beauty would have gone. This is what builds up a good family.”

Ojo also craves for a woman that is very understanding, “I want a woman with understanding. She should understand my type of person, for I am a very stubborn and aggressive type.”

Atuche: EFCC ordered to produce trial document

Justice Lateefat Okunnu of a Lagos High Court, Ikeja, on Friday ordered the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to produce some documents relating to the on-going trial of former managing director of Bank PHB, Mr. Francis Atuche, within seven days.

The documents which the court ordered the commission to produce include board resolutions of four companies – Integrated Services Limited, Futureview Financial Services Limited, Tradjeck Limited and Extra Oil Limited.

The judge had on October 2 issued a subpoena on the EFCC, and ordered the commission to produce the documents on or before the next sitting of the court on November 1.

Atuche and his wife, Elizabeth, were charged to court by the EFCC, alongside a former Chief Financial Officer of the bank, Ugo Anyanwu .

They are standing trial for allegedly stealing N25.7 billion belonging to Bank PHB (now Keystone Bank).

At the resumed trial of the matter on Friday, Atuche’s counsel, Chief Anthony Idigbe (SAN), asked the court to order the EFCC to produce the original documents.

Chief Idigbe said the documents are very relevant to the charge as they relate to a N10.9 billion credit facility Atuche had allegedly granted to the companies, without their knowledge.

He alleged that the original copies of the said documents were in the custody of the EFCC.

An EFCC official, Mr. Boniface Uzoechi, who reacted on behalf of the prosecution, admitted that the documents are in the custody of the commission.

Uzoechi however told the court that the said documents were at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja and only got to know that the court was sitting on Friday.

  • Prison pensioners send SOS to Jonathan

Retirees of the Nigeria Prison Service who were disengaged between 2006 and 2012 have sent a “Save Our Soul” message to President Goodluck Jonathan to prevail on prison authorities to begin payment of their retirement benefits.

They listed allowances owed them to include disengagement allowance, arrears of personal allowance and 2000-2007 COMPASS arrears for Pencom retirees before 2008.

The retired prison officials under the Retired Prison Officers Association said they have applied for the allowances to be paid, but nothing was heard from the prison authorities.

The chairman of the prison retirees, Idebuwa Akpofure, in an open letter to President Jonathan said the non-payment of the allowances have compounded their financial predicaments coupled with the constraints of 2004 Pension Act.

Idebuwa said they wrote the letter to inform the President about their predicament.

International friendly: Keshi drops NPFL hotshot Namo

Super Eagles coach, Stephen Keshi, has dropped Nigeria league hotshot Victor Namo from his squad for Monday’s friendly in Jordan.

Namo netted 18 goals in the just-concluded season to help Nasarawa United escape the drop.

He told MTNFootball.com his experience with the national team was worthwhile and hopes for more.

“I didn’t make the final list to Jordan, all of us can’t go, but my experience in camp was a good one for me,” Namo told MTNFootball.com

“I have learnt a lot, I won’t be a novice next time in the national team camp with this experience. I am looking forward to more of such experience.”

Namo has also reacted to critics who have questioned his claim to the league hotshot because 13 of his 18 goals came from the penalty spot.

The former Kano Pillars star Namo told MTNFootball.com, “penalties are the most difficult part of scoring goals because everyone even the fans expect you to score.

“For me, the goals I got during regular play were the easiest. I was therefore amused when I heard people saying I got more of my goals from penalties.”

  • National confab will enhance development – Okurounmu

The Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee on National Dialogue, Sen. Femi Okurounmu, on Friday said the proposed national dialogue was for the good of all Nigerians.

Okurounmu said this in Calabar when he paid a courtesy call on Dr. Thomas Ika Ika Oqua, the Ndidem of the Quas and Paramount Ruler of Calabar Municipality.

He said the 13-man committee for the national conference was set up to hear the people’s agitations and make them an agenda for the national dialogue.

“The government does not want to impose anything on the people, that is why the committee is set up to hear the views of Nigerians,’’ he said.

In his welcome address, Oqua pledged his support for the national dialogue aimed at promoting national unity.

He called on all Nigerians to support the dialogue, adding that it would foster national unity, while enhancing the country’s development.

The traditional ruler urged the team to hear the people’s agitations and take them into consideration.

He thanked President Goodluck Jonathan for initiating the national dialogue to hear the views of all Nigerians on nation-building issues.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the committee is in Calabar for the South-South Zonal Conference on the national dialogue.

People, delegates and interest groups from Akwa Ibom, Rivers and Cross River made presentations at the forum held at the Cultural Centre in Calabar.
