Ex-pope Benedict denies covering up sexual abuse

Former Pope Benedict has denied that he tried to cover up sexual abuse of children by Roman Catholic priests, in his first published comments since he stepped down.

Reuters says the comments came in an 11-page letter to Italian author and mathematician Piergiorgio Odifreddi, who had written a book about the problems facing the Roman Catholic Church before the pope resigned in February.

“As far as you mentioning the moral abuse of minors by priests, I can only, as you know, acknowledge it with profound consternation. But I never tried to cover up these things,” Benedict, who now has the title Emeritus Pope, said.

Excerpts of Benedict’s letter were published in the Rome Newspaper La Republica, on Tuesday with the former pope’s permission.

It was believed to be the first time Benedict has responded to the sexual abuse accusations in the first person, although the Vatican has always said he did much to put an end to sexual abuse of minors by priests and never tried to cover it up.

It was also the first time since Benedict resigned on February 28 that anything precise that he has written or said was published, although some people who have visited him in the Vatican house where he is living out retirement have indirectly reported to outsiders some of his comments to them.

Victims groups have accused Benedict of not doing enough to stop the abuse of children by priests while he was pope and before when he was head of the Vatican’s doctrinal office.

They say there is much still to be discovered about how the Church behaved in the past and want more bishops who were aware of abuse to be held responsible.

  • Westgate attack: Kenyatta seeks ICC’s relief

Westgate attack: Kenyatta seeks ICC’s relief

The Kenyan President, Uhuru Kenyatta, has filed a fresh application seeking to be excused from attending his trial in person before the International Criminal Court (ICC).

The court would start sitting on November 12.

The Kenya’s Kapital FM reported on Tuesday that President Kenyatta had alternatively asked for permission to be part of the trial through a video link in the event that the first request failed to scale through.

The request was lodged on the heel of the terror attack at the Westgate mall, where suspected gunmen killed 68 persons and injured about 200.

Kenyatta’s request also came, when the African Union had concluded plans to hold an extra-ordinary Summit on October 13 in Addis Ababa, to resolve on the ICC trial of the Kenyan top officials, the President and his Deputy William Ruto at The Hague.

The report said Kenyatta’s lead counsel, Steven Kay had requested that the accused be conditionally excused from continuous presence at the trial.

The counsel requested that Kenyatta should only appear at the opening and closing as well as delivery of judgments before the ICC even before the November 12 trial begins.

Kay said in the application that“ in the alternative, Kenyatta should be allowed to attend the trial continuously by means of video link.”

“Kenyatta’s election as President of the Republic of Kenya on March 4 constituted a significant change in circumstances that necessitated the fresh consideration of the issue, particularly in light of his extraordinary and exceptional roles and responsibilities as an incumbent Head of State.

“The people of Kenya were fully informed about the ICC proceedings when they elected President Kenyatta to lead the nation, and, having done so, they have a legitimate expectation that their country’s democracy should be respected by the wider international community,“ the counsel said in the application.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Kenyatta’s application came after the ICC Trial Chamber V allowed Deputy President William Ruto to travel to Kenya for a week in relation to the Westgate attack.

  • Bids for Chevron’s oil blocks due September 30

United States- based Chevron Corporation will receive bids on September 30 from prospective buyers of three oil blocks in the Niger Delta, with several local Nigerian firms in the running, industry sources told Reuters on Tuesday.

Oil industry sources estimate the mean value of the three blocks combined at $500 million to $600 million and anticipate winning bids will be around those levels.

Chevron said in June it would be selling its 40 percent interest in five onshore blocks, joining Royal Dutch Shell, Italy’s Eni and France’s Total in selling stakes in Niger Delta assets.

U.S. firm ConocoPhillips is also selling its Nigerian assets to Oando Energy for $1.79 billion.

Chevron wants to sell OML 52, 53 and 55 to one buyer and suitors will have to pay 15 percent of bids on September 30, three sources close to the deals told Reuters. The firm will sell two other blocks, OML 82 and OML 85, in a separate bidding process.

Reuters says the firm did not respond to a request for comment.

    Cardiff manager hails ‘impressive’ Odemwingie

The manager of Cardiff City, Malkay Mackay, has said he believes West Bromich Albion short-changed themselves by offloading Osaze Odemwingie during the last transfer window.

Futaa.com reports that Odemwingie impressed in a cameo appearance on his debut against Tottenham on Sunday and is set to feature in a heavily-changed side for Tuesday night’s Capital One Cup clash against West Ham.

The former Lille forward spent seven months in the wilderness at WBA after his aborted move to Queens Park Rangers in January. He joined the Welsh capital side for around £2.5million on transfer deadline day.

“He has guile, a great touch, awareness. I know exactly what I have got: an intelligent, articulate lad who had a smile on his face since the day that he got here.

“He is in the need of match fitness and training and we need to blend him in gently. But we have an exciting talent for what I believe is a really fantastic price.

Odemwingie holds WBA record for the most Premiership goals by any player.

  • FAAC: FG pays states N548bn

States reject disbursements as FG pledges payment of outstanding N75bn shortfall by NNPC

Following the embarrassing stalemate of the August 2013 Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) meeting on Monday , the federal government has coughed out N548.393 billion as the Statutory Revenue for the three tiers of government for the month of August.

According to a statement from the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation (OAGF) the Federal Government which said it was   caught in the face-off between the Federal Ministry of Finance and the state governments, this sudden disbursements “is an improvement over the figure of N497.984 billion as made available at the Federation Accounts Allocation (FAAC) meeting in August” for the month of July allocation.

Responding to the walkout by State Commissioners’ of Finance over an outstanding N75 billion expected from NNPC, the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, disclosed that efforts are being made to resolve the outstanding issues.

The statement said the OAGF gave the assurance that “FAAC has received assurances from NNPC that the issue is being dealt with dispatch and that a positive outcome ismexpected soon.”

It also said that the government is exploring all avenues to end the shortfalls in revenue caused by oil theft and vandalisation as soon as possible.

However, the state governments are rejecting this disbursement saying that the disbursement has loopholes.

In a chat with The Nation on the latest disbursement, the chairman of the Commissioners Forum Mr Timothy Odaah stated that this hasty and limited disbursement “is to ensure that they (federal government) short circuit states they should have addressed us at the meeting earlier today.”

Odaah insisted that the decision by the states to walk away from the FAAC meeting  still stands “until the state governors meet with President Goodluck Jonathan to resolve the problem.”

  • Thousands of travelers stranded on East/West highway

Thousands of travelers on the busy Port Harcourt-Warri axis of the East-West highway were left stranded for several hours on Monday when a section of the road gave way around Patani, Delta State.

It was gathered that the section ‎of the road was washed away by heavy downpour on Sunday night.

Angry motorists and their passengers blamed their fates on perceived inefficiency of the contractor handling the protracted road project and the Federal Government.

Sources from the scene told our reporter that traffic‎ started building up as early as 5am when the first sets of the vehicles reached the failed portion.

Those desperate to get to their destinations were forced to walk several miles through the failed section of the road and hundreds of stuck vehicles to get other vehicles to take them to their destinations.

Mr. Eghosa Osayande, a staff of Julius Berger Nigeria, told our reporter that he spent several hours there on his way from Port Harcourt to Warri.

“I arrived there at 7:24am I had to leave the Agofure (commercial) bus at 9:30am to where I could get a vehicle to ughelli‎,” he said in a telephone conversation.

Eghosa later got to Warri at about 1pm, over seven hours after he left Port Harcourt.

Others, particularly those who drove their own cars were not so lucky as most of them were still at the scene at the time of this report on Monday evening.

The perplexed ‎JBN staff advised those planning to travel through the road on Monday to reschedule their trips in order to avoid spending the night on the road.

  • Going for second term is not illegal – Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan has said the country’s Constitution gives him the opportunity just like any other Nigerian, the chance to vie for second term in office either as elected president or governor.

He spoke on Sunday midnight during a meeting with Nigerian Professionals in New York, United States.

Jonathan, who is yet to publicly declare his ambition on the 2015 presidential election, believed that the administration should be more concerned with delivering dividends of democracy to Nigerians.

Stressing that the interest of the nation is greater than that of any individual, he urged those fanning the ember of disintegration in the country to refrain it.

He also urged the political class in the country to drop the idea of do or die approach in politics and allow him to concentrate on his core mandate of governance.

The President said that Nigerians hold the power to vote out anybody they are not comfortable with during elections.

According to him, political leaders in the country must be mindful of what they say or do in order not to undermine the sovereignty of Nigeria.

Jonathan said, “Already we have a constitution that makes provision for maximum of eight years for anyone who wants to become a president or a governor. There is no president or governor that all citizens vote for but at the end of the election if somebody emerges you must allow the person to work.

“If you love your country, you would want your country to work. That does not mean that you will not vote against the person if you don’t like the way he works but you must allow him to work.

“No matter how you feel about the political situation, consider the interest of your country first before yourself. If you are struggling to enter a house you must not put dynamite to destroy the house. By the time you get there, there will be no house for you to stay.

“So first and foremost we must collectively build our country. Don’t bother about who is there now because power is transient, very temporary.”

On corruption, he said “So many people are saying we are not doing well in fighting corruption and before you say that, there must be a parameter for judging us. What are the yardsticks they are using to judge us?”
