APC will adopt new leadership style – Borno governor

Governor Kashim Shettima of Borno State on Monday in Maiduguri said the All Progressives Congress (APC) will adopt a new leadership style and offer exemplary leadership to Nigerians.

Shettima told reporters that the party would tackle poverty in the country by addressing their underlining causes.

“Governance is not about having large sums of money in bank accounts, it is about changing peoples’ lives for the better.

“The APC will no doubt meet the aspirations of the people, especially those at the grassroots by improving their living conditions,’’ the News Agency of Nigeria quoted the governor as saying to journalists.

He said the party would create jobs in the agricultural, industrial and other sectors of the economy, to address the root causes of poverty at the grassroots level.

“We have to evolve strategies to create jobs for our youths because youth employment is crucial to the survival of the nation.

“Very soon we will leave office and all the security apparatus around us will be gone and we will return and live with the people,’’ he said.

The governor urged Nigerian leaders to safeguard the future by striving hard to tackle unemployment among the youth.

He commended the Borno Youth Vigilante Group for tackling the Boko Haram insurgency, and described them as God sent.

According to him, the emergence of the vigilante group can best be described as divine intervention; hitherto everybody is afraid to talk about Boko Haram.

“By now a group of youths, armed with only sticks and cutlasses have succeeded in chasing and apprehending the gunmen known as Boko Haram militants,’’ he said.

Shettima said that government would soon offer employ opportunity to members of the group as a reward for their courage.

  • Rivers commission adjourns till August 15

The Rivers State Judicial Commission of Inquiry looking into the crisis that occurred at the state House of Assembly, Port Harcourt last month on Monday adjourned its sitting till Thursday, August 15 to enable counsels representing those who are yet to file their memoranda to do so through the Secretary of the commission.

The Chairman of the commission, Justice Biobele Georgewill, who announced this in Port Harcourt also said the panel has received many memoranda and reiterated his earlier promise that they would be fair to all the parties.

Georgewill also urged anybody who has a testimony to give on the crisis to come forward whether the person has a counsel or not, promising that the counsel to the commission would make a procedure for such a person to make his presentation.

The decision to adjourn till Thursday was based on the indulgence craved for by counsels to some of the parties in the crisis.

For instance, while announcing appearance for the 25 pro-Amaechi lawmakers who were in the assembly on the day of the fighting, their counsel, Damain Okoro craved for 24 hours indulgence to enable him file his memoranda.

Okoro also informed that his memo was still being uploaded at a Business centre and that “most of the witnesses who need to sign our deposition are not available at the moment.

“So I crave for 24 hours indulgence to go through all relevant processes and we will be ready and prepared to participate in the hearing.”

Alaafin’s absence stalls hearing on Onitede stool

The absence of the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, in court on Monday stalled the hearing of the succession tussle to the seat of Onitede of Tede between Oba Rauf Oladoyin and Prof. Solomon Olaniyonu .

The presiding judge, Justice AL Akintola, while addressing the court on Monday, said the case should be adjourned till October for mention in view of the absence of the Alaafin and his counsel in court.

The applicant (Olaniyonu) in suit number I/785/2001 between the state and three others (Oladoyin, the state governor and the Alaafin of Oyo) is challenging the right of the first respondent (Onitede) to the throne following a 2003 judgment to the contrary.

Prof. Olaniyonu is asking the court to decide the validity of the consenting authority of Oba Adeyemi, to the appointment of the present Onitede in 2011.

Counsel to the applicant, Segun Jayeola, said, “The whole matter now revolves around the Alaafin who is the consenting authority.

“The issue before the court is to decide whether there was a consenting authority of Alaafin on the appointment of Onitede of Tede.

“There was a judgment of the High Court in 2003 which nullifies all the actions of the governor in installing the first respondent as Onitede.

“We want the court to clarify the issue on who among the two is authentic by law. The court is now to say whether the consenting authority given prior to the judgment of June 13, 2003 subsists or not.”

  • ‘Nigerians in Diaspora should support Jonathan’

Former President of Yoruba Community in Pakistan, Khalifa A O Babs, has called on Nigerians in the Diaspora to support Goodluck Jonathan in order to bring about virile economic development in the country.

Babs was quoted to have said this in a statement released on Wednesday by the Nigeria High Commission in Islamabad.

According to the statement, Babs also said Yoruba Community in Pakistan fully supports Nigerian Ambassador, Dauda Danladi’s decision to contribute significantly through establishment of Pakistan Nigeria Trade Forum meant to meet the socio-economic needs of Pakistan and Nigeria as democratic and business environment is very conducive in both countries.

“Yoruba Diaspora in Pakistan should join hands with Nigerian President, Goodluck Jonathan to achieve the United Nation’s Development Goals in Nigeria and become part of nation’s collective efforts in building a better future for present and future generations of Nigerians.

“President Goodluck Jonathan has very rightly pointed out that Nigerian Diaspora should be Agents of Economic Change, Investment and Development of Federal Republic of Nigeria owing to the fact that currently Federal Republic of Nigeria is passing through Transformation Agenda to achieve the ultimate goal of emerging economic tiger of African Continent.

“Nigerian Diaspora in Pakistan must now forget their internal differences and look for a deepen collaboration strategy to support national development for the better future of our beloved fatherland and look into the possibilities of investment potentials in the proposed Centenary city by building Nigerian Diaspora Village, Pakistan”.

He recommended that “all the Nigerians across Pakistan should gather under the flag of Nigerian Community in Pakistan and organize Nigerian Diaspora Pakistan Conference under the umbrella of Nigeria High Commission in Islamabad soon after Eid-ul Fitr and evolve comprehensive strategy on how Nigerian Diaspora in Pakistan can play their positive role in Nigeria’s nation building drive.

Speaking on the review of the bi-lateral trade between Nigeria and Pakistan, Baba said Federal Republic of Nigeria can benefit a lot from Pakistan’s Agricultural expertise to regain agricultural glory pointing out that recently Pakistani High Commissioner to Nigeria, Muhammad Ashraf Saleem has also stressed the need to boost ties between two countries through agric development.

Former Yoruba Leader in Pakistan is, however, not satisfied with the level of the economic relationship between Nigeria and Pakistan. It is very minimal to the volume of between $115 million and $20 million US dollars.

“We must take it to, at least, $2 billion per year because the scope is there and we have the capacity, this is something that can be achieved and it must be achieved,” he suggested.

  • 9,000 hit by forced evictions in Nigeria – Report

Forced evictions in Nigeria’s largest city Lagos have cost around 9,000 people their homes or livelihoods, Amnesty International and a local rights group said in a report Monday.

Tens of thousands more could be at risk if the government proceeds with plans to redevelop the slum area of Badia East, said the report, issued jointly with the Social and Economic Rights Action Centre (SERAC).

Residents said armed police and bulldozers moved in without warning in February, forcing them out, in what the government has termed the first phase of its clearance plan.

“The effects of February’s forced eviction have been devastating for the Badia East community where dozens are still sleeping out in the open or under a nearby bridge exposed to rain, mosquitoes and at risk of physical attack,” said Oluwatosin Popoola, Amnesty International’s Nigeria researcher.

The report calls on Lagos authorities to halt the forced evictions, aimed at bringing order to the chaotic and crowded metropolis which is home to 15 million people.

“It is estimated that close to 9,000 residents of Badia East lost their homes or livelihoods,” AFP quoted a statement on the report.

“If these plans proceed as described, tens of thousands will be at risk of forced eviction and face possible destitution.”

Slums have sprung up throughout Lagos as residents pour into the sprawling city in search of work from different parts of the country.

The two groups used before-and-after satellite images showing concrete houses and other structures razed to the ground to dispute claims by an official that the area cleared was a rubbish dump.

A survey carried out by residents estimated that at least 266 buildings containing homes and businesses were completely destroyed, affecting an estimated 2,237 households.

Similar evictions have been carried in other places across Nigeria, with thousands of residents left homeless.

AFP says Lagos government officials did not immediately return calls for comment.

  • Hadjuk Split wants Kayode

    Hadjuk Split wants Kayode

Croatian club Hadjuk Split is willing to sign Nigeria U-20 striker Olanrewaju Kayode after his proposed move to Tunisia’s Esperance crashed.

Kayode was set to join Esperance only for the move to be scuttled by a five million Euros release clause.

Both the player and his Germany-based agent Emeka Ezeala therefore left Tunis without signing a contract.

Hadjuk Split could well offer the former Asec Mimosas star striker a lifeline even though his handlers are demanding for an improved deal from the top Croatian club.

“His agents want an improved Hadjuk offer, both in terms of transfer fee and the player’s salary,” a source informed MTNFootball.com

Three players have so far signed for foreign clubs from the team to the 2013 FIFA U20 World Cup in Turkey.

Chidi Osuchukwu has joined Sporting Braga in Portugal, Umar Aminu has signed for Turkish club Samsunspor and Alhaji Gero has linked up with Swedish side Osters IF.

A vessel suspected to be laden with crude oil has been reportedly distressed and sank within Odioama community at the fringes of the Altantic Ocean in Bayelsa coastline.

Chief Mark Eketekpe, a community leader in Ijawkiri area of Odioama told NAN: “actually, something like that happened a few days ago but we don’t know where the vessel came from.

  • Ezekiel makes history in Belgium

    Ezekiel makes history in Belgium

Standard Liege striker, Imoh Ezekiel, on Sunday made history in Belgium when he scored the fastest goal ever in the Jupiler League, futaa.com reports.

Ezekiel helped his club to a 2-0 victory when he scored the opener in the ninth seconds against Genk. And that was his first goal this season.

Whilst it may be the fastest goal ever scored in Belgium’s Jupiler League, it is quite a few seconds slower than the fastest ever goals scored in the history of the Beautiful Game.

In July, Ezekiel was handed a contract extension that would keep him in Belgium until June 2017.

He played a vital role in Standard Liege’s sixth place finish last season, netting 16 times in 33 appearances to place fifth in the league top scorers’ chart.

  • Israel approves release of Palestinian prisoners

Israel’s government has given details of 26 long-term Palestinian prisoners to be freed as part of a deal which will see peace talks resume next week, BBC reports.

A list of names chosen by a ministerial committee was published overnight.

The prisoners will be freed on Tuesday. The delay allows time for last-minute legal challenges by victims’ families.

The announcement came after Palestinian officials accused Israel of trying to sabotage the peace talks by approving nearly 1,200 new settlement homes.

An Israeli government spokesman dismissed the criticism, saying every peace initiative so far had proposed that the settlements in question become Israeli territory.

The Palestinians have previously agreed in principle to minor land swaps.

About 500,000 Jews live in more than 100 settlements built since Israel’s 1967 occupation of the West Bank and East Jerusalem. The settlements are considered illegal under international law, though Israel disputes this.

On Sunday evening, a statement from the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that 26 prisoners would be released.

  • Jonathan not a ‘kindergarten’ leader- Abati

Jonathan not a ‘kindergarten’ leader- Abati

The Presidency has  faulted the Interim National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Bisi Akande for allegedly describing President Goodluck Jonathan as a ‘kindergarten’ leader who treats national issues with levity.

Jonathan, in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, urged Akande  to respect the truth and Nigeria.

The statement said that Akande’s comment was propagating falsehood, willfully insulting the President and impugning the President’s integrity.

It reads: “We have noted with dismay the continuation of efforts by leaders of the opposition to promote themselves and their party through the irresponsible denigration of President Goodluck Jonathan and the exalted Office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

“The interim national chairman of the APC, Chief Bisi Akande sank to a new low in this regard yesterday when he rudely and falsely described President Jonathan as a “kindergarten” leader who treats national issues with levity.”

“Chief Bisi  Akande has every right to embark on a flight of fancy about the APC beating the PDP in the 2015 general elections, but he does no justice to his age and status when he resorts to propagating falsehood, wilfully insulting the President of his country, impugning his integrity and desecrating the very office which his party wishes to take over in 2015 by fair or foul means.”

The statement continued: “We urge Chief Akande and his fellow-travellers to remember that there are laws against libel and defamation of character in this country even if there are no legal impediments to indecorous, hypocritical and unpatriotic vituperations.”

“It is certainly rude, ill-mannered, uncharitable and hypocritical for Chief Akande to falsely and cavalierly allege that a President who toils tirelessly every day of the week, evolving and implementing workable solutions to Nigeria’s problems, is handling national issues with levity.”

“Also, nothing else but gross ignorance and lack of consideration could have led Chief Akande to refer to a President who, having served as deputy governor, governor, vice president and president, has far more experience of governance at the highest level than him and his preferred “candidates”, as a kindergarten leader.”

“By his very unguarded and intemperate outburst yesterday, Chief Akande exhibited not only an unbecoming lack of respect for the person and office of the President of his country, but also a complete disregard for the patriotic feelings of the millions of Nigerians who voted for President Jonathan and who continue to appreciate his sincere efforts to positively transform the nation.”

“It is very sad and unfortunate that unbridled ambition for the office they constantly impugn and denigrate has blinded Chief Akande and his ilk to the visible accomplishments of the Jonathan Presidency.”

“Certainly, nothing else but a manic and unscrupulous quest for power could have led them to make such accusations against a President who, who amongst other significant achievements, has been praised for his handling of the insurgency in some parts of Northern Nigeria where he has used a combination of diplomacy and targeted military force to contain the security threat.”

Stressing that Nigeria’s economy has been promoted under President Jonathan’s administration, he said: “Nothing else but the relentless pursuit of narrow personal and sectional interests could lead them to make such claims about a President under whose leadership Nigeria’s economy has been promoted from a low income economy to a middle income economy by the World Bank and whose leadership has seen the Gross Domestic Product of Nigeria increase at an annual rate of over 6% since he took office.”

“Finally, though President Jonathan has not indicated whether or not he is interested in a second term, Chief Akande, who has taken stock of his party and seen that they have no electable presidential material is already trying to be clever by half by claiming the President is statute-barred from contesting in 2015 saying it will amount to a “third term”.

    “If this is the winning strategy of the APC,  Chief Akande has every reason to panic because the issue of eligibility for election into the office of the President has been settled by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999,  as amended  which provides as follows;

    137. (1) A person shall not be qualified for election to the office of President if –

    (b) he has been elected to such office at any two previous elections;”

“President Goodluck Jonathan has been elected into office on only ONE previous occasion and is therefore not statute-barred from running.

“It is clear that the APC is seeking to bait the Presidency to respond to it to achieve two purposes. The first purpose is to get their name into the press and gain name recognition for their party. How pathetic. The second and more important reason is to divert the attention of the public from the festering feud between Muhammadu Buhari and Bola Tinubu over the overriding ambition of the two men which is threatening to tear the new contraption which is mistakenly referred to by the gullible as a party.”

“To the discerning, it is only a matter of time before ambition sinks the APC boat. It is only 2013 and already the big masquerades in the party are using undemocratic words like “must”, “nobody can stop” and other military terms in discussing their presidential ticket.”

“Our advice to the APC is this: treat your party like a democratic association and don’t mistake it for the Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) that someone used to force his way to power.” It stated
