Five die, many injured as another building collapses in Lagos
.occupants broke our seal, says state government.NEMA chased out of siteFive people, including a 13-year old girl on Sunday died in Lagos following the collapse of a two-storey building. The building located at 30/32 Ishaga Road, Ikate, Surulere, was said to have collapsed around 10am while it was raining.Eyewitnesses told The Nation that no fewer than 10 people sustained various degrees of injuries, with about four rushed to the hospital for emergency or surgical attention. It was learnt that the victims of the mishap included passersby who stopped at the uncompleted building for shelter from the rain.Among them, The Nation learnt was the teenager, who was said to be a bread seller and a tailor, whose machine was brought out but his body not yet seen.Although eyewitnesses believed some people were still trapped under the collapsed building, Lagos State Government officials had a different view. One Prince Tony Anslem, a Rotarian, said he was in church when they heard the building collapsed. He insisted that some people may still be trapped in the debris, noting that while they were trying to rescue the victims, they heard cries of helpless people saying “we are still here o! We are still here o!He said: “Although I am not wearing a wristwatch, this building collapsed in the morning when it was raining. We were in church, when we heard the sound. Because my church is not far from here, we quickly rushed down and were the first to start evacuating the victims before the emergency response agencies were contacted.“As a Rotary member and a volunteer for things like this, I moved in here and saw what was happening. Immediately, we mobilized the youths in the area and the moved into action. We were able to act swiftly because the dredging company working around here employed the youths.“So, we told them to drive their truck and other equipment. They were initially afraid that their boss would not be happy but when they realized it was an emergency, they co-operated with us. So, we were evacuating the victims before National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, got here immediately after. Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, got here early too.“Before the emergency agencies got here, the youths in the area have rescued five people alive. At that time, it was only half of the house that was down. I was telling the people there to rush out because the other half will certainly fall.“They refused to listen to me and even called me a wizard for saying that. They said instead of helping them bring out their things, I am telling them the other half will collapse as well. A lot of people got injured. I cannot quantify the number but I saw more than 10 people.“You know it was raining and people ran under the shed. I still believe there are people trapped under the debris. The issue now is that the bread seller we were expecting to meet was a lady carrying a baby but the one we eventually met dead, was the teenage girl with no baby.“So, it means either that bread seller with the baby is still under there or the baby is trapped there. Secondly, while we were standing here, one of the rescued victims told us that someone gave them a call that they were still trapped in there.“When we moved in, we were hearing their voice “we are still here o! We are still here o! But as we moved half way towards them, we did not hear the voice again and that was when two people were rushed out dead and we did not get to where those people are.“So far, five corpses have been removed. Lagos State Government has taken four corpses, while mallams took their own immediately. People are under here, even a tailor, obioma, they brought his things out but where is he?”Confirming the incident , both NEMA’s information officer, Ibrahim Farinloye and LASEMA’s General Manager, Osayintolu said five corpses have been recovered.Farinloye told The Nation that one of the injured victims was rushed to Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, LASUTH, for surgery, while two others were taken to emergency wards.Osayintolu said: “it occurred around 10am and immediately we activated our emergency team. We have build our local networks so much that members of our local emergency management committee were on ground and acted swiftly in response of the crisis.“We were able to safe five people. Two have been discharged while three are being treated in our emergency care unit. One is undergoing operation at the General Hospital but it is sympathetic to note that we recovered five bodies.“However, the operation was swift, prompt efficient and effective.”Meanwhile, The Nation met NEMA officials at about 3:30pm leaving the site of the mishap and they alleged they were chased out by the State Commissioner for Special Duties, Wale Ahmed.NEMA alleged that state officials were angry that Farinloye was granting media interview, hence, they were molested out of the site since it was a state government affair. However, Ahmed denied chasing NEMA out of the site and told The Nation he was not aware if anyone molested them.He said: “I did not chase them out and I am not even aware if anyone did.“But to put the facts straight, NEMA is a secondary responder. In any state where you have state emergency management committee, it is that committee that is primary responder. It is the state that will call NEMA if we need their assistance or if the situation is beyond our control.”On whether building collapse has become a norm in the state, Ahmed disagreed and said that for every one building that collapses, several others that would have caused hazards have been demolished.“It is not a norm. For every single building that collapses, there are so many that we have been able to avert by either testing or doing a controlled demolition. Sometimes we go to the extent of evacuating the occupants.“We have prevented so many buildings from collapsing. Of course, you will not get to hear of those ones that we have saved or prevented, it is only the unfortunate ones you will know about.“This particular building is under construction. We were called that the building has collapsed and we came here. Honestly, at the moment, I cannot tell you what let to its collapse. We will get more facts on paper works and official document for you later because at the moment, we are trying to see how many more people we can save. We have been able to safe five people who are in good condition. “Also Speaking, General Manager, Lagos State Building Control Agency, LASBCA, Dr. Abimbola Animashaun-Odunayo, said the collapsed building was sealed about three weeks ago. She decried the rate at which occupants of such buildings violate the state’s regulation. She said: “We have sealed this structure about three weeks ago. It was discovered during one of our routine road shows and we sealed about four buildings around this environment. Whenever we seal buildings, we expect the owners to come with their various document but this particular building never turned up.“This construction started even before the establishment of our agency and they were not certified. We told them they have to stop work. We do monitor but unfortunately, they decided to work on a Sunday when our offices are closed. That is why this building collapsed.“For this to have happened, it means they broke our seal. The building is substandard and there was no approval.” -

Crown Prince Philippe to become Belgian monarch
Belgium’s King Albert II is about to formally abdicate in favour of his son Crown Prince Philippe, BBC reports.
In his final address as king on Saturday, the 79-year-old monarch urged Belgians to give his 53-year-old son “your support.”
He also stressed that his wish was that Belgium – split between the Flemish-speaking north and the French south – remained united.
Earlier this month, Albert said he was no longer well enough to carry on.
“Give the future King Philippe and the future Queen Mathilde your active participation and your support,” King Albert said in his address.
“They make a great couple serving our country and they enjoy my full confidence,” said the monarch, who will resign on Belgium’s national day – after nearly 20 years on the throne.
Philippe, the Oxford- and Stanford-educated prince, will then become the country’s seventh king.
He has also trained as an air force pilot.
Belgium has a constitutional monarchy in which the king plays a largely ceremonial role.
One of the duties the monarch does have is trying to resolve constitutional crises.

ITALIAN BOMBER : Joel Obi’s back and better
Even in his short professional career, Joel Obi, the gifted Nigerian Inter Milan midfielder, has known the meaning of being in the mountain and valley of life.
He made his debut for Inter in a UEFA Champions League group stage game against Werder Bremen on September 29, 2010 after coming on as a second half substitute in a 4-0 shutout. He would later make his Italian Serie A debut against Cagliari on October 17, 2010 when he replaced Philippe Coutinho in the 66th minute. Inter won the match 1-0, thanks to a goal from Samuel Eto’o.
Ever since, the 22-year-old Lagos-born chap has not looked back even during his brief spell at Parma but last season, he suffered from every footballer’s nightmare injury, which limited him to just three appearances and forced him to miss Nigeria’s Africa Nations Cup campaign.
But in an electronic conversation with The Nation Sport & Style, Obi hearkened to the saying that ‘challenges are what make life interesting and overcoming them is what makes life meaningful,’ saying the injury , though a setback, gave him the opportunity to reflect on the vicissitudes of life and that he is better for it.
“I am very happy to be back and it is nice that many people are excited with my return,” began Obi who learned his craft at NEPA FC of Lagos. “It was a tough one for me but I am happy to be back with a chance to play again.
“Having any kind of injury is tough since you are not going to play the game for that particular period of time but it is unfortunate that there is no way a footballer can do away with it.
“It’s part of the game and the only way out is just to pray for quick recovery. Injury can contribute to someone dropping form which can also make you lose confidence on your return. But it all depends on how one deals with it,” he explained, as he gave further insight on how he was able to cope.
“My mind was always on the pitch thinking when would I have the opportunity to play again? I make sure I obeyed all the dos and don’ts from the medical team while I was injured and it really helped me. “Having an injury can be very frustrating especially when you see your teammates on the pitch but it was also an opportunity for me to pay attention to what others were doing on the pitch. I’m happy and it’s a great to be back,” he added, as he responded to other sundry details. Excerpts…
How did you cope generally during the time when you were injured?
I am a footballer and the best way I could help myself was to cope with the challenges. I watched videos, especially the ones involving matches that I played. I look at them to know where I needed to adjust and also what I needed to become a better player. Many people expect a lot from me on my return and for me to get my shirt back that means I will need to convince the coach that I am ready. So I took my time to watch my games, the injury was just a learning period too but I missed the ball, the crowd and the game itself. I must confess that injury is a bad thing really.
Now that you’re back to training, how do you hope to play yourself back to reckoning for both club and country?
Once I ‘m able to find my way back into the teams, I will surely hit my best form. I don’t want to rush myself, but to get good playing time and justify why the team has missed me. My confidence is ok and I’m in good spirit. Everybody may have missed me probably because of my playing style; all I want now is to justify the confidence they have in me by playing well.
Inter Milan struggled all through last season due to injuries to series of players; it seems this affected the performance of the team
It was tough and it was really a painful one for me and the entire team. When a team lost about four to five key players due to injuries, it will definitely affect the team. Psychologically, it will affect the players as well because there will be some urgent changes which may not work as expected. I think the injury crisis we had last season affected the performance of Inter Milan. The good thing is that the fans were understandable and we are hoping to make up for what we lost last season.
Jose Mourinho gave your debut in the Champions League against Werder Bremen, was that the genesis of your breakthrough at Inter?
Mourinho is an intelligent man, a coach with great passion for the game. I think he gave me a lot of encouragement before the match. He’s a coach that knows exactly what you need to do to step up your game. Back then, he gave me some hard training. So I think my Champions League debut against Bremen was the genesis of my breakthrough at Inter. Two weeks after, I made my Italian Serie a debut against AC Milan and that was the game that really prepared me for other challenges that followed.
Will you agree that the departure of Jose Mourinho affected Inter Milan?
I think it is a wrong opinion because after Mourinho, we had Rafael Benitez who also did his best; Inter is a club that is bigger than anybody. Sometimes, people forget that football can be very funny and that is the same thing about life. Mourinho’s departure had nothing to do with the team because the club always goes for the best coaches and I believe so much that we are going to prove it right this season.
Since your move to Inter Milan’s youth team, you have played under several coaches but it seems you enjoyed more playing time under Benitez…
I have been enjoying every aspect of my career with all the coaches that I have played under. Though there have been differences under different coaches, it’s been great being here at Inter. Coaches have different approaches to games, Benitez’s tactics are different from that of Mourinho and also different from what Materrazi will use, and that is where players’ impact comes in. So I enjoyed virtually everybody in the team because in one way or the other I got my chance and I utilised it well.
The best way to convince your coach whenever you are given the chance is to give your best and let the coach still believe you are still ready to do more.
Inter Milan ranks among the best clubs in the world, how are you getting along with the senior players in the team?
I’m getting used to everybody. Of course in a team like this, you must keep your head, but playing here is a great opportunity to learn from my senior colleagues. They love me since I’m loyal to them. This is a club like a family and you have the opportunity to create your own world. I love being in the club because I see everybody here as a member of a big family. I have stayed long in the club and
I’m enjoying the relationship with everyone.
You have been linked to clubs in the English Premier League, will the English football suit your style of play?
I am flattered with the rumours linking me to England because most footballers believe playing in England is a good thing. It’s great to get attentions from England but I’m very happy as an Inter Milan player. There is no official discussion from my club. Inter has the final say, and for now I am yet to be aware of such move. To the other question, I am a versatile player and adapting to any league in the world should not be a problem.
What is your experience playing with lots of world class players in Inter Milan?
I count myself lucky playing for a club like Inter. I love Inter Milan and I count myself lucky to be playing with talented and world stars. I appreciate playing with respected players like Dejan Stankovic. The club has given me lots of chances to prove myself and I think am yet to produce my best.
How did you manage to impress all the coaches that have been coming to the club?
It’s all down to commitment. I said it before that, my attitude to each game is very high; I don’t take things for granted because I know my commitment today will give me another chance tomorrow.
That tomorrow maybe with another coach and that is why a player must be committed always.
Let’s talk about the national team, don’t you feel pained that you missed a chance of winning the AFCON with the Super Eagles?
I know if not for my injury, I could have challenged for a place in the team. It was painful missing out on such a big occasion for my country but it was great that others did their best to win the trophy for Nigeria. AFCON glory is the first major target of many national team players and I must tell you that it was a great honour for the players. Despite being on injury treatment, my mind was still with the team because I am associated with most of the players and I wanted them to be proud of national team glory. Well, I was not part of the 2013 AFCON glory but by the grace of the living God, I will be part of the squad that will retain the trophy in two years time. But now, the World Cup is the priority for the team.
What do you think about the Super Eagles World Cup qualifier against Malawi in September?
I think nothing else than victory! There is no way Malawi will come and just walk away with the three points. I know it is possible but not in this present atmosphere where players are angry over their ouster from the Confederation Cup. I know Nigeria still has big matches to play if we beat Malawi but it is one game after another. Malawi will fall first then others can follow.
Are you saying Nigeria will get the World Cup ticket cheaply?
What do you mean by cheap? Is there any cheap victory again in football? Well, it can come even cheaper if we work harder but we should not be dreaming about any easy games. I am very sure that the Malawians are coming to die here but if we work harder and ready to play like true champions of Africa, every knee must bow. Hard work goes for victory while laziness, pride, ego are means of failure. So I am not underrating any team for Eagles. I am only pleading for hard work whether I will be there or not.
Should Eagles eventually qualify to the last round of the 2014 World Cup qualifiers , are you not scared of the chances of teams like Cote d’Ivoire?
Cote d’Ivoire, for instance, are already wounded elephants since we denied them a chance to lift the AFCON in South Africa and that will make it tougher for us because it could take more years before they can lift the AFCON again. So we would be ready for any team knowing well we can beat anybody with hard work and determination.
How do you relax off the pitch?
I like watching my past video clips and also play PS video games. And sometimes I hang around with my friends at the beach or to travel around the city of Milan. But I like meeting my friends and spending time with them. But I love catching fun on the beach. I still play table tennis because it is a flexible game… I do listen to music, both Nigerian and European.
How good is your mastery of the Italian language now?
I am very fluent in speaking the Italian language now. I can write and speak Italian and it helps me in my communication with my teammates. My coming to Italy at a young age makes it sweet for me to enjoy the beautiful life of the country. Life is normal everywhere and I am coping very well.
What is your fashion style like?
I am a simple dresser. I think my hairstyle makes a lot of difference in my style but I make use of simple colours and marching order. Looking good is part of most footballers and I’m not an exemption.

Homosexuality: Police, Community declare man wanted
A 42 year-old man, Abel Igbinosa who was charged to court for openly engaging in homosexuality, has been declared wanted by the Police for allegedly jumping bail.Abel is also wanted by the elders of his native Odionwere community in Edo State to appease the deities whom they claimed, he had defiled by his unacceptable sexual behaviour.Meanwhile, Abel Igbinosa’s story is as pathetic as it is bizarre. His Lawyers claim he is a victim of foreign indoctrination which runs counter to the norms and culture of the land.Abel Igbinosa had lived in Italy before he returned to Nigeria. As an adult, he found that homosexuality was a normal way of life while resident in Italy, and he thus became a self professed gay.Back home in Nigeria, life is different. Homosexuality is considered a taboo by the natives while the offence carries a jail term of over ten years imprisonment. In November 2012, he was publicly attacked while on weekend picnic with one of his alleged partners. His partner was badly tortured while Abel Igbinosa was immediately handed over to the police.Abel has been attacked and beaten up on several occasions by members of his community and subsequently arrested and tortured by the police because of his sexual preference. He was eventually charged to court for engaging in homosexual acts which is punishable by Law. With a possible jail term hanging on his neck if finally convicted, Abel Igbinosa’s problem is compounded as the community head had also declared him persona non grata and an outcast for failure to appease the gods of the land. -
Why I visited Obasanjo- Jonathan
President Goodluck Jonathan has confirmed meeting with former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Saturday in his residence in Owu, Abeokuta, Ogun State.
He told newsmen that although he was in Abeokuta to pay condolence visit to his Special Adviser, Reuben Abati whose mother was buried on Friday, he could not have come to the Ogun State capital where the former president resides, and not pay him a visit.
Coming to Abeokuta and not visiting Obasanjo, he said, would have make some people speculate that there was a problem between them.
He said: “It is true we saw President Obasanjo in his house because we came here to Abeokuta to commiserate with Abati who buried his mother yesterday. And knowing that Abati’s house is at the backyard of Obasanjo’s house, it will not be good if we come and not visit him.”
“Even the man himself will not be happy if we don’t visit him. I am like a son to Obasanjo,” he added.
Dressed in a black flowing agbada and a Yoruba cap to match, President Jonathan arrived Obasanjo’s residence around 12 noon in the company of Senator Grace Folashade Bent.
Even as details of the closed door meeting was unknown, it is believed that the discussions centred on 2015 election, the crisis in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and the controversy surrounding the planned conduct of PDP’s mini National Convention.
The Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum (PDPGF) and Akwa Ibom State Governor, Godswill Akpabio had been reported to have made moves to reconcile them especially to facilitate the yet to be announced second term ambition of the President.
Speaking with newsmen at the Abati’s residence President Jonathan said that he would have attended the Abati’s Church Service after commissioning the Police housing estate on Friday but had to fly out to Togo to meet President of Côte d’Ivoire, Allasane Quattara, and his Togolese counterpart over some looming political crisis.
Jonathan condoled the family as he noted Abati was a member of his family and advised the family to take solace in the fact that their mother lived to a ripe old age beyond the biblical three score and ten.
Speaking during the visit, Abati said that the family was no longer expecting the President since he was represented by his Chief of Staff, Chief Mike Ogiadomhe, at the church service.
Abati said he was happy with the life his mother lived as not many mothers would die and their burial attract the presence of the nation’s president.

FG committed to tackling unemployment – Aganga
The Federal Government has expressed its determination to address the challenges of unemployment through development of a sustainable Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).
The Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Olusegun Aganga, stated this in Abeokuta during a validation workshop on the Revised Policy on MSMEs in Ogun.

The minister said the government had concluded plans to create five million jobs by 2015 through the expansion of the MSMEs.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that he promised to forward a proposal to the Federal Executive Council on the need to ensure production of school uniforms from made-in-Nigeria fabrics to encourage enterprises development.

WBA wants £2m for Odemwingie
English Premier League club, West Browmwich Albion, has slapped a £2 million (about N493 million) transfer tag on Nigerian striker, Peter Odemwingie.
The forward has endured a difficult last seven months since unsuccessfully trying to force a transfer to Queens Park Rangers in January, supersport.com reports.
He had been fined, made to use a different dressing room from the rest of the squad, left out from the club’s pre-season tour and compelled to train with the club’s youth team.
Another Premier League club, Crystal Palace, has shown strong interest in Odemwingie but the latest bid for the 32-year-old’s services came from Dubai-based club, Al Nasr.
Al Nasr tabled an £850,000 (about N210 million) bid for the attacker but West Brom is holding out for £2 million.
With the forward spending more time away from football at the highest level, he took to Twitter to reveal his new passion – Golf.
“I think I need some antiGolf tablets cos the desire to play is getting too much hahaha greetings to everyone ! Brum still hot like in Hawaii,” he tweeted via @OdemwingieP.
Odemwingie joined the Baggies in 2010 but it seems he has finally reached the end of the road at the Hawthorns.
