Nigeria maintains Class ‘A’ shareholder status in Afrexim Bank

Nigeria has maintained its class ‘A’ Shareholder status on the African Export-Import Bank (Afrexim Bank) Board of Directors, as Egypt and Uganda joined the category.

The bank, at its 19th Annual General Meeting in Addis Ababa, elected Egypt’s Central Bank Governor, Mr Gamal Abde-Aziz, and Dr Louis Kirangwa, the Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Uganda, to join Nigeria’s Minister of State for Finance, Dr Yerima Ngama, and Mr Stefan Luis-Francois of African Development Bank on its Board of Directors for Class ‘A’ shareholders.

The bank whose total assets rose by 612 per cent to 3.7 billion dollars between 2003 and 2012, also elected Mrs Caroline Abel, Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Seychelles, and Mr John Panonetsy Mangundya, as Group Chief Executive Officer of Commercial Bank of Zimbabwe.

They joined Mr Jean-Marie Benoit Mani, National Director for Cameroon of the Central Bank of Central African States as well as Mr Victor-Jerome Nembelessini-Silue, former Director-General of the National Investment Bank of Cote d’Ivoire as class `B` directors.

The bank renewed the terms of the current Class `C` Directors, including Mr Anil Dua of Standard Chartered Bank, UK, Mr Liu Liange of the China Eximbank and those of the two Independent Directors, Mr Ronald Sibongiseni Ntuli of the Thelo Group of Companies, South Africa and Mr Hugh Kennedy, Chairman of TransAfrica Holdings Limited.

Currently, four seats each have been allocated to Classes `A’ and `B’ shareholders on the Bank’s Board of Directors and two each to Class `C’ and independent shareholders as no seat was allocated to Class `D’ shareholders, pending attainment of a subscription threshold of 10 per cent by that class.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the President of the Bank code-named Afrexim Bank, Jean-Louis Ekra, told its owners at the AGM of shareholders that Net Income also soared by 251 per cent during the period to hit 65 million dollars.

Ekra said shareholders’ funds equally rose to end the year 2012 at 612 million dollars, “largely from retained earnings and accretion to reserves. “Efficiency measures were also good; return on assets and return on equity averaged the 2003-2012 period at fourper cent and 10 per cent respectively.”

According to him, cost/income ratio and net interest margins also averaged the period at levels of 22 per cent and three per cent, while non-performing loan (NPL) ratio remained quite below the industry level, averaging less than one per cent during the period.

Ekra attributed the financial performance to solid internal controls and risk management introduced as the bank grew.

“For 2012, the Bank’s total assets grew by 30 per cent, to reach 3.7 billion dollars, when compared to 2011 while net income rose by 12 per cent and shareholders’ funds grew by 20 per cent, Return on Equity was 11.5 per cent and NPL ratio remained good at two per cent.”

The president announced that the bank’s board had recommended a dividend payment of 14.6 million dollars.

The meeting subsequently approved the resolutions and accepted the bank’s annual report for 2012; the audited financial statements for the year ended Dec. 31, 2012; the dividend declaration for 2012; and the appointment of the external auditors for the 2013 financial year.

Several sources confirm to MTNFootball.com that the Port Harcourt club will only transfer the midfielder for 500,000 Euros.

“Right now I have a club who are willing to pay for the player, but Dolphins has demanded for 500,000 Euros,” a Europe-based agent informed MTNFootball.com

Another agent who claimed to have some serious offers for the player in Turkey was also told he would need to pay 500,000 Euros to get his man.

Tense South Africa awaits Mandela news

South Africans are heading to work in a sombre mood as they await news on former President Nelson Mandela, BBC reports.

The South African presidency announced on Sunday evening that Mr. Mandela had become critical, even though doctors were “doing everything possible.”

A senior official said South Africans should not hold out “false hopes.”

South Africa’s first black president, 94, was taken to hospital in Pretoria earlier this month for the third time this year, with a lung infection.

President Jacob Zuma said on Sunday that he had visited Mr. Mandela and spoken to his wife and medical teams.

Mr. Zuma said he had been told by doctors that the former president’s condition had worsened over the past 24 hours.

“The doctors are doing everything possible to get his condition to improve and are ensuring that Madiba is well-looked after and is comfortable. He is in good hands,” said President Zuma, using Mr. Mandela’s clan name by which he is widely known in South Africa.

Mac Maharaj, Mr. Zuma’s spokesman, told the BBC’s Newshour that the doctors’ use of the word “critical” was “sufficient explanation that should raise concern amongst us.”

“Therefore we want to assure the public that the doctors are working away to try and get his condition to improve,” he said.

Mr. Maharaj added that this was a stressful time for the Mandela family, and appealed for their privacy.

“I think there is need to be sombre about the news. There is a need not to hold out false hopes but at the same time let’s keep him in our thoughts and let’s will him more strength,” he said.

  • JTF arrests 8 over SPDC pipeline fire

*Loss from pipeline closure hits over N1bn

The Joint Task Force, ‘Operation Pulo Shield’ says it has arrested eight suspects in connection with last Wednesday’s fire outbreak at the Trans Niger Pipeline of Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) in Bodo West of Gokana Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The fire outbreak has led to the shutdown of about 150,000 barrels of crude oil per day, following the the closure of the 24″ and 28″ TNP.

Consequently, it was gathered that the Federal Government and Joint Venture partners have lost about $75m (N1.18bn) as at Sunday evening.

SPDC blamed the incident on activities of illegal bunkering rings, although local environmentalists in the area said the Anglo Dutch oil firm’s contractors are using the fire to incinerate crude oil spill.

However, JTF Media Coordinator, Lt. Colonel Onyema Nwachukwu said the suspects were arrested at the scene of the fire by operatives of 142 Battalion attached to the Sector 2 of the JTF.

He said, “The troop who sighted the fire at about 1.30am on Wednesday mobilised to the scene where they found the eight people in two tug boats.

“During the interrogation, they claimed to be employees of Steve Integrated Technical Service and Sege Marine hired by SPDC to fix broken pipelines in Bodo.”

The JTF spokesperson added that the suspects were facing preliminary interrogations at the Sector 2 headquarters in Port Harcourt before they would be handled over the prosecuting agencies.

  • Emergency: 1,500 refugees fled to Cameroon, says Nigerian Envoy

The Nigerian Ambassador to Cameroon, Ambassador Hadiza Mustapha has disclosed that about 1,500 refugees have fled from the three northern states of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe to the northern part of Cameroon following the State of Emergency rule declared by President Goodluck Jonathan in May.

Speaking with journalists in her office in Yaounde, She denied the media reports which claimed that the refugees were over 3000 persons.

According to her, the figure of 1,500 as confirmed by the UN Refugee Commission and the Cameroonian authorities in the region is the correct figure.

She also maintained that the cooperation between both countries securities has checked the activities of Boko Haram terrorists and that the Cameroonian government has magnanimously granted the refugees unlimited stay until the situation normalise in their states.

She said: “What I have seen in the media is over 3000 refugees in the northern part of the Cameroon. But when we asked the authorities there, we were told they are 1,500 and the UN Refugee Commission is taking care of them.”

“What is also good which is also an indication of good relationship is that, unlike in some countries that they will give the refugees just a few days or weeks or months to leave their territory once there is normalisation in those areas, because these are people who have come in as a result of the operations that is going on, but the authorities have told us that our people are here, the UN system is looking after them, and they have not given us deadline to get our people back to Nigeria.”

“We are going to visit the north after this summit and also get in touch with the Nigerian authorities handling that. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), has already been in touch with us and we have given them this information. So it is under control”.

“There is a saying that you cannot choose your neighbours but you share both the good and the bad with your neighbours. It is true that we have seen not only with the Boko Haram insurgency but with the declaration of State of Emergency, a few refugees who have come into the Cameroon.”

“This is what happens, as long as you cannot choose your neigbour but you can choose how you live with your neigbour, that is why peace is very important. And since I have been here 10 months and since we put the Bakassi issue behind us, there has been a lot of improvement in our relationship.”

“And with that improvement and with that peace, a lot of cooperation is now possible. In the area of terrorism, there is a lot of cooperation between our security agencies and that of the Cameroonian security agencies in terms of exchange of information even in joint operations.”

She went on: “They have also given us quite a lot of support, sometimes we have even had exchange of suspected persons. Like you rightly noted, this is all possible because of the peace that now exist between us.”

“A lot of things is possible because both countries security agencies are co-operating very well. In fact they have exchange quite a lot of visits and meetings, we have to firm up the cooperation some more by going beyond just Nigeria and Cameroon and making it multi-lateral because as you know there is also Chad Republic.”

“There is a border between Nigeria and Chad and between Cameroon and Chad. Secondly, we have also signed a trans-border security agreement with Cameroon. That is a very good document, is good achievement because in that document we have virtually agreed to exchange information, do joint operation, help each other to deport suspected criminals.”

“It is not for terrorism alone, it is for all other trans-national or trans-border criminal activities. This has also contributed to a lot of economic and political relations”.

According to her, four million Nigerians living in Cameroon are very well behaved, hardworking, law abiding and holding the economy of Cameroon together in critical areas.

On the reported harrassement of Nigerians by the Cameroon Jandams, Ambassador Mustapha said that while this was true in the past, there has been great improvement in the relations between the Nigerian community and their host authorities.

“You know the story of the Cameroons and the Cameronian Jandams, is a story we know right from when we were growing up. I come from a border town so I know. It is true that they are some high handedness, that the Jandams doesn’t seem to have a very good reputation but this is not only with Nigerians.”

“There were a lot of these cases in the past but like I said with the improvement in the relationship, I have spoken with all the security agencies over these concerns and I have been given assurances and I have no reason to doubt the assurances that I have been given, that no Nigerian will be targetted specifically because he is a Nigerian. All they want is for us to sensitise our population to be law abiding.”

“But they (Camernoonian authorities) admitted and this is not a secret that there has been a lot of reforms. You know like with our own police too there are some areas of problems like lack of skills, bad eggs. So they have seen and admitted that they are bad eggs and they are doing a lot to reform. Like I said there is marked improvement and you are free to confirm from Nigerians living here. We have had cases that we have taken to them and their responses were very good. You know is not always easy to change bad behaviour over night. Some Nigerians have noticed that a lot of the harassments which is always on immigration, residence permit have reduced”. She stated

  • Spain rolls out ‘big guns’ for Nigeria

Spain rolls out ‘big guns’ for Nigeria

Spain coach Vicente Del Bosque would revert to his first-choice side for Sunday’s Confederations Cup clash with Nigeria, Supersport.com reports.

“It would be basically that side, yes,” said Del Bosque when asked if he would name the same side that beat Uruguay 2-1 last Sunday in Recife.

Del Bosque fielded a nominal ‘B’ team in the 10-0 thrashing of Tahiti on Thursday though that included some of the best players in Europe in Fernando Torres and David Villa, who scored seven goals between them against the Oceania champions.

“I have no problems,” Villa said when asked about the possibility of reverting to the bench. “There are 23 strong players in the squad, and we are a team and the coach decides who he wants to play. He would choose, it is part of the game.”

Spain, who is unbeaten in 24 matches, has qualified for the semifinals and would likely meet Italy in Fortaleza next Thursday.

Even if the Spaniards lose to the African champions, Nigeria would have to win by at least four goals as Uruguay would almost certainly beat Tahiti in Recife.

  • Nine tourists die in Pakistan attack

Gunmen have killed 10 people, including nine foreign tourists after storming a hotel in far northern Pakistan, BBC reports.

Officials say five are from Ukraine, one from Russia and three from China. A Pakistani guide also died in the attack.

It happened at the base camp of Nanga Parbat, the world’s ninth highest mountain, in Gilgit-Baltistan.

It is the first such attack on tourists in the region. A Sunni militant group, Jundullah, said it was responsible.

Police had at first said 10 foreign tourists had died. The motive for the killings is not yet clear.

One person, said to be Chinese, has survived the attack.

Part of the Himalayan Range, Nanga Parbat, standing at 8,126m (26,660ft), is popular with trekkers and mountaineers, especially during June and July.

The assault is seen as a significant blow for Pakistan’s already struggling tourist industry, the BBC says.

Gilgit-Baltistan, which borders China, had so far been considered one of the more secure areas under Pakistani control.

The attackers, reportedly dressed in police uniforms, stormed the hotel at the base camp in the foothills of Nanga Parbat shortly after midnight.
