  • N4.5b house row: Senator threatens to sue NDIC

N4.5b house row: Senator threatens to sue NDIC

Erstwhile senator representing Kebbi Central, Farouk Bello Bunza, has faulted the decision of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) to revoke the N4.5 billion sale of his Banana Island property.

He threatened to challenge the decision in court, insisting that the action was not supported by the terms of the transaction.

Bunza queried whether the revocation was based on the original contract agreement he executed with the defunct Heritage Bank or on NDIC’s letter, dated September 23.

He argued that NDIC had admitted it lacked the legal powers to void the contract agreement with Heritage Bank, raising doubts about the foundation of its action.

The senator maintained that the September 23 letter was not a new agreement but a communication of NDIC’s position outlining steps he was required to take to conclude the transaction.

According to him, those steps include payment of N4.76 billion for the property, acknowledgement of his earlier N833 million deposit paid almost three years earlier, settlement of N1.7 billion in alleged outstanding rental obligations under the Heritage Bank agreement, payment of the N2.148 billion balance within six months and execution of a deed of undertaking.

The erstwhile senator said he complied fully with all the requirements and went further by paying the outstanding N2.148 billion immediately, rather than within six months as stated in the NDIC letter or the 36 months earlier mentioned by the Managing Director of the corporation at a press conference.

“To fulfil all righteousness, I also executed the deed of undertaking within the stipulated time, and all these were duly acknowledged by NDIC,” Bunza said.

Stating his side on the issue of title documents, Bunza accused the corporation of withholding critical information.

He wondered why the NDIC failed to disclose alleged issues surrounding the documents for nearly two years, only to raise concerns after full payment for the property had been made.

He also disputed claims by the NDIC Managing Director that he requested 36 months to clear the balance, noting that the sum was paid through Coronation Merchant Bank within 24 hours of NDIC’s confirmation of the outstanding amount and assurances that the title documents would be released upon payment.

The erstwhile senator also dismissed NDIC’s explanation that letters confirming payment were signed by junior officers, describing it as contradictory since the same officers also conveyed the corporation’s subsequent retraction.

He challenged NDIC’s justification for a downward revaluation of the property, allegedly based on sea reclamation, arguing that the plot had in fact been reduced in size by the construction of an access road.

According to Bunza, the alleged disappearance of title documents could only be linked to attempts to perfect what he described as illegal alterations at the lands registry.

“All these issues will be presented before the court,” he said, vowing to seek judicial redress over what he called an unjustified revocation of the transaction.

    • COAS admits environment becoming more complex

The Nigerian Army is set to overhaul its training systems and school curricula.

These are parts of efforts to build a more professional, adaptable and combat-ready force, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen Waidi Shaibu, said yesterday.

The Army chef spoke at the closing ceremony of this year’s COAS annual conference in Lagos.

He said the reforms, which will take off next year, would be mission-focused and aligned with the service’s evolving operational environment.

Shaibu announced that special attention would be given to the training and employment of Special Forces and Army Aviation.

The COAS said the Army would undertake what he called deliberate interventions to strengthen the Special Forces School.

He stressed that the Army’s intelligence briefings during the conference showed that the country’s security environment was becoming more complex, requiring enhanced capabilities in intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition, reconnaissance, and cyber operations.

Shaibu said the overhaul would be holistic and driven by the Army Headquarters through the Department of Training.

According to him, realistic and targeted training remains critical to improved operational outcomes.

“As part of this effort, we will make informed but radical changes to our training and operational activities in the coming year. Special attention will be given to the training and employment of Special Forces and Army Aviation, including deliberate interventions to strengthen the Special Forces School,” Shaibu said.

The COAS explained that regional instability and global changes in warfare demanded continuous learning, adaptation and innovation, adding that the Army would continue to promote technological integration while leveraging government support for critical military equipment.

Beyond training and operations, Shaibu reaffirmed his commitment to personnel welfare, particularly addressing accommodation shortages across barracks nationwide.

The COAS directed that all ongoing residential projects be completed and allocated promptly, while new housing projects would be initiated across Army divisions.

As an interim measure, he said extensive renovation works would be carried out in barracks to ease current housing pressures.

Shaibu also reiterated the Army’s focus on post-service housing, describing it as a key welfare priority.

The COAS said the outcomes of the annual conference would be compiled and circulated shortly to guide implementation in the coming year.

He stressed that the deliberations would shape the Army’s policies and strategies going forward.

The Green Chamber also considered the report of its Committees on Finance and National Planning and Economic Development on the 2026–2028 MTEF/FSP laid before the Committee of Supply by the House Finance Committee Chairman, James Abiodun Faleke, during plenary.

The MTEF/FSP is a projection of a three-year spending plan of the federal government. The nation’s budget is predicated on the approved framework.

Inflation rate projections for 2026, 2027, and 2028 stood at 16.5 per cent, 13 per cent, and 9 per cent, respectively, which was sustained based on the commitment of the nation’s monetary policy authority to moderate inflationary pressure.

The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth rate was projected at 4.68 per cent, 5.96 per cent, and 7.9 per cent for the years 2026, 2027, and 2028, respectively.

The House said, amidst the reform in the nation’s economy and the prospect for reforms to take effect in 2026, it recommended that the projection for real GDP be sustained.

In line with the ongoing economic reforms and the activation of the Tax Act, it was recommended that the Federal Government implement a National Scanning Policy within the National Single Window of the Nigeria Revenue Services (NRS), in collaboration with the relevant agencies.

This, the House said, would enhance revenue assurance, improve trade facilitation, reduce leakages, and strengthen transparency and national security.

The capital expenditure (exclusive of transfers) stood at N20.131 trillion, Statutory transfers of N3.152 trillion, and Sinking Fund, projected at N388.54 billion.

  • Katsina United, Kano Pillars return to home grounds  after five-game bans

Katsina United, Kano Pillars return to home grounds  after five-game bans

Kano Pillars will return to their traditional home ground, the Sani Abacha Stadium, Kano, after serving a five-match stadium ban while Katsina United will go back to their fortress in Katsina, following key decisions taken by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Disciplinary Committee at its meeting held on Wednesday.

The decision marks a major relief for the four-time Nigerian champions, who had been forced to play their home fixtures at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium, Katsina, after the Sani Abacha Stadium was closed indefinitely due to crowd trouble during their NPFL clash against Shooting Stars Sports Club of Ibadan on October 12, 2025.

After reviewing the protest lodged by Kano Pillars against the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) sanctions, the NFF Disciplinary Committee upheld most of the earlier rulings but reduced the stadium closure to a five-match ban, which will be fully served at the end of the weekend’s Matchday 18 against Plateau United. This will clear the way for Kano Pillars to welcome fans back to Sani Abacha Stadium for subsequent home fixtures starting from the game with Nasarawa United in the last game of the first stanza next weekend.

In its findings, the Committee established that Kano Pillars failed to provide adequate and effective security, which allowed unauthorized persons access to restricted areas. It was also confirmed that home supporters threw objects onto the field of play, causing a temporary stoppage of the match.

More seriously, the Committee found that supporters encroached onto the pitch and assaulted Shooting Stars players and match officials, actions deemed capable of bringing the game into disrepute.

Club officials admitted the misconduct of their supporters and appealed for leniency.

But based on these findings, the Committee upheld a series of fines against Kano Pillars. These include: ₦1,000,000 for failure to provide adequate security; ₦1,000,000 for throwing objects onto the field of play; ₦1,000,000 each under partially adopted sanctions related to misconduct and unproven compensatory claims and ₦1,500,000 as compensatory damages to match officials, in line with Article C.12 of the NPFL Framework and Rules.

In addition, the Committee upheld the deduction of three points and three goals from Kano Pillars’ accumulated tally for the assault on match officials.

At the same sitting, the Disciplinary Committee also ruled on a protest involving Katsina United FC following their November 8, 2025 NPFL match against Barau FC at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium.

The Committee found Katsina United guilty of poor security arrangements, failure to control supporters, and throwing objects and stones onto the pitch, an incident that resulted in injury to Barau FC player Abraham Nana.

As a result, Katsina United were fined a total of ₦3,000,000 across various sanctions, while an earlier order moving the club to Jos City Stadium was reduced to a five-match ban. The ban will run concurrently and will elapse in Matchday 21 against Plateau United, after which Katsina United will return to their home ground to play matches with fans in attendance from the game with Abia Warriors the following home game.

The NFF Disciplinary Committee emphasized that all decisions reached are without prejudice to the right of appeal by the affected clubs.
