Oyo deploys joint security team to comb old national park

The Oyo State Government has announced that a combined security team, including the military, is currently combing the Old Oyo National Park, a vast forest stretching into Kwara and Niger states, as part of renewed efforts to flush out criminal elements.

The government said the operation is aimed at preventing bandits and terrorists from infiltrating or occupying the area.

It added that while the state is not under any banditry threat, all identified flashpoints will be cleared to ensure criminal groups do not gain ground.

Addressing journalists after Wednesday’s Expanded Security Council Meeting presided over by Governor Seyi Makinde, the Special Adviser on Security, Fatai Owoseni, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the state.

He noted that Oyo State will continue to strengthen collaborations with non-state actors to enhance its integrated security architecture, assuring residents that no effort or resource will be spared to keep the state safe and unconducive for criminal activities.

He added that despite the challenges of crime and criminalities in the country, Oyo state government has been rising to the occasion in tackling the challenges by ensuring that patrol teams are located in strategic places.

He also stated that the government has put in place a number of measures to make the state too hot for criminals, which include joint visibility patrols, adding that the state has also activated swift deployment squads.

Expatiating on the collaboration between the state government and non-state actors to secure the state, Owoseni said, “With regards to non-state actors, we have been doing this for a while. It is really a form of partnership between the government and some sectors to secure the state. It is integrating non-state actors into the state’s security architecture.

“That is basically what Oyo State has adopted. We have an integrated security architecture, where the non-state actors are properly integrated into our architecture.

“I will cite the example of Ibadan, where we have the Mogajis Initiative, which His Imperial Majesty, the Olubadan of Ibadanland chairs and coordinates. Each of the Mogajis coordinates these non-state actors in his domain, and that is also being done in other parts of the state.

“Similarly, the local governments are championing what we call the voluntary policing sector. We started this like almost three years ago, where the local government chairman uses the neighborhood watch initiatives and put them under what we call the voluntary policing sector.

“By the way also, the fringes of Oyo State are shared boundaries. We have been engaging our neighbouring states for a while with a view to securing our borders. There is an initiative on security between Oyo and Ogun states, but Lagos and Osun states have joined that initiative. We held a meeting about two weeks ago to put up strategies on how to secure our shared boundaries. Of course, we are looking forward to a situation whereby we will bring a state like Kwara into the fold as well.”

Speaking on mining activities in the state, Owoseni disclosed that all miners licensed by the Federal Government must align with the rules and regulations of Oyo State and also involve the local communities and the traditional rulers of the environments where they want to operate before they can be allowed to operate.

He stressed that any company that fails to respect the state’s guidelines with respect to protecting the people and the environment from mining hazards would not be allowed to operate in the state.

Owoseni expressed the appreciation of Governor Seyi Makinde to all the service commanders and their agencies for the synergy, dedication and support to the state government on security, urging all residents of the state to see security as a responsibility for everyone.

He charged residents to always call the 615 Emergency Number to report suspicious acts or report emergencies.

In their separate remarks, the Attorney-General/Commissioner for Justice, Biodun Aikomo and the Chairman of Local Government Chairmen in Oyo State, Hon Sikiru Sanda, assured that the state government would continue to protect and respect the rights of the citizens within the ambits of the law.

Speaking on behalf of the traditional rulers, Oba Abiodun Kola-Daisi, the Osi Olubadan, lauded the government for the initiative and promised that the traditional institution would continue to support the government to prevent crimes in communities.

The meeting was also attended by the Deputy Governor, Bayo Lawal; the Secretary to Oyo State Government, Professor Olanike Adeyemo; the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Otunba Segun Ogunwuyi; Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Ademola Ojo; the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Rasidi Ladoja; the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye, other traditional rulers, local government chairmen, and service commanders.

Former Director-General of the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON), Major General Victor Ezugwu (retd), has hailed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for signing the DICON Act 2023, describing it as a turning point in Nigeria’s military-industrial capabilities, boosting national security and economic growth.

General Ezugwu said this at the closing ceremony of the 2025 Nigeria International Security Exhibition and Conference (NISECEXPO 2025), held at the National Defence College, Abuja.

The three-day event with the theme: “Future Wars: Operational Endurance and Force Build-up Capabilities,” was organised by the Nigeria Security Exhibition and Conference (NISEC) in collaboration with the DICON.

The event brought together stakeholders from across Africa and Europe to explore innovative solutions to contemporary security challenges in Nigeria and Africa.

Ezugwu, a former Commander of the Nigerian Army’s Infantry Corps, stated that the law empowers the defence industry and ensures that local capabilities can effectively support operational efficiency.

He called for a radical transformation of the Nigerian Armed Forces through the integration of modern technology, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and local capacity development to enhance national security, highlighting the need for Nigeria to harness its abundant natural resources and deploy modern technology in defence production.

He said, “The enemy is thinking fast and occupying more ground. Non-state actors are playing an inimical role to national development and security.

“This exhibition has allowed participants to share expertise and actionable solutions from Israel, Ukraine and beyond, so that Nigeria and Africa can leverage them to strengthen defence production.

“With the incorporation of AI and drones into Nigeria’s defence architecture, I expect that within the next one or two years, our Armed Forces will be better equipped to tackle the myriad of security challenges across the country.”

The retired general commended the present administration for signing the DICON Act into law, noting that “the move provides teeth and bites” to the industry and ensures local capacity can support operational efficiency.

He described the expo as “a well-packaged showcase for future wars” and stressed the importance of preparing African defence industries for the 21st century.

An international expert, Prof. Roberto Mugavero, also the President of the European Centre for Disaster Medicine, praised the platform for fostering collaboration.

Nugavero said the expo provided a rare opportunity to link research, academia and military-civilian operations.

He said, “Events like this create vital links between private research, public research and responders, the military and civilian personnel alike.

“It allows knowledge-sharing that enhances preparedness and cooperation for complex scenarios, whether conflict or natural disaster.”

According to him, criminals and terrorists are exploiting emerging technologies, noting that the Nigerian military and security agencies must adapt and even stay ahead of these threats.

Ohwofa said the event was part of a broader strategy to ensure Nigeria’s defence industry becomes self-reliant, responsive and capable of meeting evolving security threats, while fostering regional collaboration.

He added that exhibitions like the NISECEXPO bring together inventors, scientists and academics to equip the military with innovative solutions.

“This is not a time for talk; it is a time to see tangible results on the ground,” he said.

The expo showcased cutting-edge defence technologies, including unmanned aerial vehicles, AI-driven security solutions and disaster management systems.

“I have absolute confidence in your ability to deliver victory to our party in Osun State. You have my support and that of the National leadership of APC to win the coming election”, he told them, assuring that the National leadership of the party would back the agreed candidate.

  • More aircraft, stronger competition will cut airfares – Keyamo

More aircraft, stronger competition will cut airfares – Keyamo

…FG cannot legally fix ticket prices in a deregulated sector

More aircraft and stronger competition among domestic airlines will force airfares down in the months ahead, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, said on Wednesday.

Keyamo who gave this assurance in response to public outcry against high cost of domestic air travel, further assured that ongoing reforms are already attracting cheaper aircraft leases and expanding fleet capacity nationwide.

Responding to questions from journalists at the State House, Abuja after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, which was presided over the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the minister explained that as airlines acquire more planes on cheaper terms, market competition, not government regulation, will ultimately drive ticket prices lower in what is a fully deregulated aviation sector.

According to him, the Federal Government has no legal authority to fix airfares, noting that deregulation dates back to the Ibrahim Babangida era when private carriers were first granted freedom to operate and determine their pricing based on market dynamics.

“Government has absolutely no powers to fix prices for private enterprises. That is what deregulation means. But that does not mean we are leaving the airlines without engagement,” Keyamo said.

He confirmed he was invited by the Senate over rising airfares but could not attend due to his presentations at FEC, adding that the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority and domestic airlines were directed to appear before lawmakers in his absence.

The minister listed key cost drivers frequently raised by operators, including limited access to aircraft, unfavourable lease conditions, lack of local maintenance facilities, and the persistent need to source large volumes of foreign exchange to conduct mandatory C-checks abroad.

Keyamo disclosed that, for the first time in nearly two decades, a major international lessor has returned to Nigeria and granted a cheaper dry lease to a local operator, an outcome he attributed to reforms under the Tinubu administration, including new practice directions implementing the Cape Town Convention to protect lessors’ rights.

“With cheaper dry leases coming in, more airlines will have access to aircraft. More aircraft automatically means stronger competition. And competition is what brings prices down in any free economy,” he said, adding that Nigerians should begin to feel the impact within months to a year.

On the issue of multiple taxes and charges, recently flagged by ECOWAS, Keyamo noted that aviation taxes fall under federal revenue authorities, not his ministry.

“I cannot wake up one morning and abolish taxes. These revenues go into the Federation Account. The Finance Minister, the tax authorities, and other stakeholders must all be at the table,” he said.

He added that concerns raised by operators have already been escalated to the relevant economic authorities, stressing that while government will continue supporting the industry, it must also sustain revenues necessary to maintain national aviation infrastructure.

“The baton is passed from one generation of officers to the next. It is your responsibility to not only uphold the standards of your predecessors but to surpass them.

“Lead by example, demonstrating humility, firmness in decision-making, compassion for your subordinates, and loyalty to the Constitution and the Commander-in-Chief.”

According to him, rising to this height in the military profession requires resilience under pressure, courage in the face of adversity, moral integrity in decision-making, and an unshakable commitment to national service.

“Each of the senior officers before us today has demonstrated exceptional command capability, staff proficiency and strategic insight, making them worthy of this honour,” he said.

“Embrace this new responsibility with courage and renewed patriotism. Lead with wisdom, act with integrity, command with compassion, and remain unwavering in the defence of Nigeria’s sovereignty and unity.”

The minister commended the Chief of Army Staff, Army Council, and senior leadership for maintaining the integrity and credibility of the promotion process.

He stressed that the Army operates in an increasingly complex security environment, requiring adaptable, visionary, and courageous leaders.

Musa also acknowledged the critical role of families, describing their support as a “silent but powerful contribution to national security.
