    Arsenal renew race for Osimhen

Arsenal has become the latest team to be linked with a summer move for Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen.

Reports out of Italy claimed  talks are underway  with the Napoli striker after top target Benjamin Sesko opted to stay put at RB Leipzig and sign a new contract.

The 25-year-oldNigerian ace  has made it clear that he wishes to leave Napoli with the Premier League a possible destination.

The player has a release clause of €160M, which Napoli patron Aurelio De Laurentiis will use to give his new coach, Antonio Conte, a sizeable summer war chest.

After a superb debut season in Serie A, injuries and a lack of form derailed Osimhen’s progress as Napoli failed miserably in their defence of the Serie A title.

Chelsea were reported to be keen on signing the Nigerian superstar, but recent interest from Saudi Arabia, where Osimhen is understood to have received an offer in excess of €40M a season, seems to have cooled the Stamford Bridge club’s interest.

Now Il Roma (via calcionapoli24.it) claimed  that last season’s Premier League runners-up have made contact with Osimhen’s agent, Roberto Calenda, to explore the possibility of a summer switch to the Emirates Stadium.

Tight for Eagles to pick World Cup ticket , says Obodo

Former  Nigeria International  midfielder Christian Obodo has admitted that  the chances of the Super Eagles picking a ticket to the 2026 FIFA World Cup to be co-hosted by USA, Mexico and Canada  is very slim.

After an underwhelming performance on  Match day 3 and 4  that saw the coach Finidi George –led side  securing just a point  following a 1-1 home draw against South Africa before that shock 2-1 loss to Republic of  Benin on Monday,  three-point Super Eagles are now fourth  on the log  in Group C  where Rwanda,   South Africa and  Benin are jointly in pole position with seven points.

Though the super Eagles  are still in with a chance  should  they  win their  remaining six matches, the former  Fiorentina player  said  the situation is precarious.

“It’s a tight situation for us  and it would be incredible if Nigeria fail  to pick the ticket to the  2026 World Cup,” the 40-year-old Obodo  said on Brila fm. “It is going to be shame on us  but  it is a difficult situation because everybody wants to go to the World Cup.”

He said it was unthinkable  that the Super Eagles  would be  struggling in a   group hitherto considered  a fair one.
“I didn’t know we were going  to find  ourselves in such a messy situation with the kind of players we have,” he  continued. “And all of them did well with their various clubs . I don’t think the players  are happy over the situation and I don’t think the coach is happy too because it is a dent on his own reputation. “

The  next round of qualifying matches will be played in March 2025 when the Super Eagles first play away to  group leaders Rwanda  before hosting  bottom team Zimbabwe.

Messi mulls retirement  after Inter Miami

Argentine football superstar Lionel Messi says he expects Inter Miami to be the club where he closes his legendary playing career, but he is not intending to depart right away.

Messi, who has a contract with the MLS squad until the end of the 2025 campaign, made his comments to ESPN in an interview.

“Yes, as of today, I think it’s going to be my last club,” Messi told ESPN.

But Messi, who turns 37 on June 24, also added, “I’m not ready to leave football either.”

The record eight-time Ballon d’Or winner became a legend with Barcelona, helping capture four Champions League crowns and 10 La Liga titles. Messi sparked Argentina victories in the 2021 Copa America and 2022 World Cup and is set to play for Argentina in this month’s Copa America, to be staged in the United States.

After playing for Barca from 2004-2021, Messi joined Paris Saint-Germain from 2021-2023 and then moved to Inter Miami last year, helping the club win the Leagues Cup crown in his early days with the squad.

“It was a difficult step to leave Europe to come here,” Messi said. “The fact of having been world champion helped a lot to see things differently also.”

Messi’s star turn raised the profile for MLS in the United States, matches selling out wherever he plays and his shirt by far the most popular among MLS jersey purchasers.

Messi now ponders playing for his homeland in the 2026 World Cup, to be co-hosted by the USA with Mexico and Canada, and is contemplating the end of his incredible career.

“My whole life I did this. I love playing ball. I enjoy the training, the day every day, of the matches. A little afraid that everything will end,” Messi said. “I try to enjoy. That’s why I enjoy everything much more, because I’m aware that there’s less and less to go and I have a good time at the club.

“How lucky I am to have colleagues and friends by my side. I had a good time in the selection, where I have teammates and friends too, and many of them, and I enjoy the little details that I know I’m going to miss when I don’t play anymore.”

Mani Foundation to hold basketball clinic in Lagos

Organisers  of the Mani Giving Back Foundation basketball programme has yet disclosed that this year’s event  would hold between  July 24 and 28  in Ilupeju, a major hub for basketball in Lagos.

Under  the auspices of Germany-based Michael Ani, Nigeria’s two-time Special Olympics World Games Head Coach, NationSports gathered that the events will  include basketball games and  skill clinics under the tutelage  of  experienced coaches  as well as motivational sessions by top athletes and coaches.

Ani who has earned plaudits over the years  for promoting the cause of physically- challenge kids hinted that kids living with disabilities would be a major priority of the clinic, stating that it was part of his efforts in fostering an inclusive Nigerian society.

The clinic , he said was an opportunity  to give  back to the society through teaching, scholarships and donating of kits among other sundry items.

“This year’s  event promises to be a major milestone in our journey,” the 34-year-old Ani said. “ It goes beyond promoting sports; it aims to inspire young people by demonstrating that dreams can be achieved regardless of challenges.”

Ani said the project he embarked almost two decades ago has grown over the years , adding the partnership  with the Special Olympics Nigeria has offered greater opportunities  for children and adults with disabilities.

“Partnering with the Special Olympics Nigeria, we established the first basketball team for people with disabilities,” he continued. “I scouted and trained over 50 players with diverse abilities, preparing them for the World Games.

  • NPFL to decide Beyond Limits promotion

NPFL to decide Beyond Limits promotion

After the conclusion of the Nigeria National League (NNL) Super 8 in Enugu, four teams, Nasarawa United, El-Kanemi Warriors, Beyond Limits and Ikorodu United booked places in the elite Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).

However, the promotion of Beyond Limits could hang in the balance as the rule does not permits two team from the same owner to play in the same league, thus putting in doubt the participation of Beyond Limits in the NPFL next season.

According to the NPFL rule on ownership of club, Clause 5.10 of the regulations, a person is not allowed to hold/acquire “significant interest” in an NPFL while holding a significant interest in another NPFL club.

It simply means that no individual is allowed to have a significant interest in two or more NPFL clubs.

And with Chief Kunle Soname already credited  as owners of Remo Stars, a leading team in the NPFL as well as the confirmed owner of the newly promoted Beyond Limits, the possibility of the two teams playing in the NPFL next season dicey.

Soname is also the first Nigerian to acquire a European club, C.D. Feirense of Portugal, which he bought in 2015.

Asked to clarify the desirability of both Remo Stars and Beyond Limits participating the NPFL next season, the Chief Executive Officer of the NPFL, Davidson Owumi said the league body would make its position known  in the coming days.

“We are aware of the situation; it’s not only in Europe that an individual is not allowed to have two teams in the same league, it’s also in our rule book. But please wait for the official statement from the NPFL,” Owumi pleaded.

  • Basketball legend Jerry West dead at 86

Basketball legend Jerry West dead at 86

Jerry West, an iconic 1960s star guard for the Los Angeles Lakers who inspired the NBA logo, died  yesterday at age 86, the Los Angeles Clippers announced.

West played for the Lakers from 1960 through 1974, winning his only NBA title in 1972, and was co-captain on the 1960 Rome Olympic US basketball gold medal squad.

In later years, West served as an executive on several NBA clubs, most recently the Clippers, his knowledge and guidance contributing to eight championship runs, six by the Lakers.

“Jerry West, the personification of basketball excellence and a friend to all who knew him, passed away peacefully this morning at the age of 86,” the Clippers announced. “His wife, Karen, was by his side.”

The league plans to have a pre-game tribute to West before Wednesday’s third game of this year’s NBA Finals.

“I’m so deeply saddened at the news of Jerry’s passing,” fellow NBA icon Michael Jordan said in a statement. “He was truly a friend and a mentor. Like an older brother to me. I valued his friendship and knowledge.

“I always wished I could’ve played against him as a competitor, but the more I came to know him, I wish I had been his teammate. I admired his basketball insights and he and I shared many similarities to how we approached the game. He will be forever missed. Rest in peace, Logo.”

With impressive speed and quickness and a deft shooting touch, West was nicknamed “Mr. Clutch” for his skilled shot-making under pressure.

“Jerry West was a basketball genius and a defining figure in our league for more than 60 years,” NBA commissioner Adam Silver said. “He distinguished himself not only as an NBA champion and an All-Star in all 14 of his playing seasons, but also as a consummate competitor who embraced the biggest moments.”

In the 1969 NBA Finals against the arch-rival Boston Celtics, he received the Most Valuable Player award even though the Celtics beat the Lakers for the title.

West was an NBA All-Star in all 14 of his league seasons and the NBA scoring champion in 1970. His jersey number, 44, was retired by the Lakers.

Current Lakers star LeBron James, a four-time NBA champion and four-time MVP, said he will miss chats with the legend.

“Will truly miss our convos my dear friend! My thoughts and prayers goes out to your wonderful family! Forever love Jerry! Rest in Paradise my guy!” James posted on X, formerly Twitter.

West was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1980 and was enshrined again in 2010 when the entire 1960 Olympic basketball team was inducted.

In October, West will be enshrined for a third time as a contributor for his work as an executive, becoming the first person ever inducted as both a player and a contributor.

In 1969, the NBA created its current logo, which was the silhouette of West dribbling a basketball, an image inspired by a photograph of West during a game.

“He was the league’s first Finals MVP and made rising to the occasion his signature quality,” Silver said.

“Jerry’s four decades with the Lakers also included a successful stint as a head coach and a remarkable run in the front office that cemented his reputation as one of the greatest executives in sports history.”

For his career, West averaged 27.0 points, 5.8 rebounds and 6.7 assists a game.

West, who coached the Lakers from 1976-1979, would capture eight titles as an NBA executive, five with the 1980s “Showtime” Lakers, another with LA in 2000 and two with Golden State in 2015 and 2017, before joining the Clippers.

“This is a hard day,” Clippers owner Steve Ballmer said in a statement. “I’m honored to call Jerry a confidant, an advisor and a friend. Connie, my wife, called him my ‘Basketball Dad.’

“He was absolutely my basketball sage: wise, loyal and so much fun. If you were in his presence, you felt his competitiveness and his drive.

“He cared about everything and everyone. From the first day I met Jerry seven years ago, he inspired me with his intellect, honesty and enthusiasm. He never stopped.

“He always lent an ear and he always had a quip. He always left me laughing. I will miss him.”

  • Society seeks council’s involvement in agriculture

Society seeks council’s involvement in agriculture

The President of Epe Club, Adebola Shabi, has urged local government chairmen to take action by providing land for farming, supporting local farmers with fertilisers, and promoting mechanised farming techniques.

Shabi canvassed a collective effort on agriculture to address food shortage in the country.

He criticied the “mismanagement” of land resources that were initially meant for agricultural purposes but have now been allocated for estates.

He spoke at the Annual General meeting (AGM) and induction of new members into the club.

He called for a return to the agricultural practices of the past, highlighting the need for increased focus on cultivating crops like cocoa and rubber.

He said: “We need to improve on our agriculture. Let our people return to farm, that would bring down prices in the food items. Lagos State got a lot of land from families for agriculture purpose. Later on, they started selling to people to build estates, we don’t need estates in this area, what we need is agriculture. Our people are hungry, Nigerians are hungry, let us go back to the way Obafemi Awolowo and others did.”

Shabi emphasised that by investing in agriculture, they could achieve food self-sufficiency and combat the rising food prices in the country.

“We should start from the locals, the local government chairmen should wake up; it’s not about building markets, and what are you going to sell in the market? Why can’t you have land for your people to start farming and take it to the markets? You’ll see that food price will come down. We’re bringing in food from the north, if the northerners decide not to bring in food again, we will be hungry, what are we going to eat? Will we be eating estates?, he asked.

One of the inductees, Commissioner for Energy in Lagos State, Biodun Ogunleye, spoke on his fulfillment in being able to contribute to the development of Epe land and also on the strategies of the state to having renewable resources around its region.

According to him, the Lagos state government is coming up with an agro processing centre to deal with food spoilage in the land to aid agricultural development.

Epe Club General Secretary, Hakeem Oluwo, spoke on the development in the area.

“If you had been to this town few years ago and what we have on ground now, you will discover that a lot of changes have taken place. Any community that is able to galvanise its indigenes, it will bring progress because some of them can be in a position of authority where they can influence things for the town and part of Epe club mission is develop Epe,” he said.

Oluwo said efforts are on to improve the situation in Epe land and to also create a relaxation place for them after retirement.

“All of us will still retire and come back home and if there’s no place like this, most of us are used to recreation in Lagos. If we don’t have a place like this, we would just be sleeping without being able to socialise,” he said.

Ajala said his administration was aware of the outcry on the astronomical increase in the prices of foodstuffs.

“As a government that loves our people, we believe that we should come up with this initiative with the primary objective of ensuring that we bring food to the table of people regardless of their economic status.

“What we are doing here is to sell foodstuffs at subsidised rate – five De Rica goes for N3,500 as against N7,000 in the local market, bread that is being sold for N1,200 and above outside in the market goes for N500 here.
